Missy, ya' look good with your Ghetto-Fab thing going on!
I hope this is easily readable because I haven't quite gotten this
reply-thing down yet. Anyway, I just had an idea for the Chicago-
land group. I don't know how feasible it is regarding logistics, but
the idea is to have a girl's afternoon or evening out at a
restaurant, museum or coffee house (or jazz joint) for the sake of
getting together again in a few months or so--just to smack everybody
in the face with our beautiful Sisterlocks. Imagine how awed we were
when we all got together. Can you imagine the effect it would have
on others??? I'm giddy about it already!

Trell,
U have made my day sis.
I love the excitment in your voice referencing my
hair.
ONce every 2-3 weeks, I mist my hair with water or my
herbal rinse from Ebenenaturals.com, braid it almost
to the ends and then using strips of foil paper I roll
my hair midway up. I don't roll it to the root, b/c it
is then to tight. If I want Bantu Knots I roll it to
the root.
If you looked at all my pics you will see one labelled
foilset or something like that u can actually see the
foil strips as well as a pic of how they look in my
hair.

What a wonderful opportunity to be able to share with young soon to
be women!
This past summer my youngest niece spent a week with us. Her hair has
never been relaxed but I know her mom presses it for "special"
occassions. Before we left I told her that Auntie Deb was going to
lock her hair so that she'd look like the rest of us. My daughter
and I put about 150 two strand twist in her hair. She looke so
adorable.
She was so excited! One day we sprinkled her hair with beads, then we
placed it in two ponytails, we let it hang free and so on. When my
brother came to get her he told her repeatedly how cute she looked.
He even commented positively on some of the locked styles in my books.
To make a long story short she loved her "locks" and my brother is
also a convert.

Re: Deb's Jewelry

2008-11-29 11:24:07

Hi!
My address is http://www.NappynHappy.com
Thanks for the compliments. I do put lots of energy in these pieces
to make sure the color combinations are right for our skin tones and
hair. I also try to keep things affordable so that you can match them
with your outfits, seasons or as your mood changes.
Even though our locks are beautiful when you add a little bit of
sparkle it brightens your face, eyes, and smile. One trick I've
learned is the mauves and whites worn at eye level enhance your eyes
and the white or silver tones worn at earlobe levels widen your
smiles as well as make your teeth sparkle.
If you have the length try the gold spial on locks at about chin
length. The tones in this piece really compliments our skin. The
spirals are small adding hints of sparkle or color, very understated
but nice.
When I feel bold , I wear the Ghanaian coins. I love the ones with
cowerie shells on them, but the drums and cocoa plants look nice too.
These coins are special due to our heritage with Ghana and also it is
ILLEAGAL to take their money out of the country!
For those of you that like the coins I have a some South African
penny pieces and a few coins from Swaziland. These Swaziland coins
are exceptional as their edges are scalloped and the face has a bust
of a man with traditional head dress. Contact me if you'd like
something extrodinary with these coins.
Thank you for allowing me to self promote,

Retreat

2008-11-29 04:22:17

Ladies,
I attended a Mother/Daughter Retreat this past weekend, with my daughter,
Page. The daughters were all at the precious age of eleven.
I spoke on Nutrition, Skin, and HAIR! One of the little girls asked what I
thought about gasp...relaxer! I don't think only one of the girls had a
relaxer and she had box braid extensions in her hair. The rest were all
natural. Some have had relaxer experience, but it wasn't a positive one.
When I said to those girls, I'm glad you asked, I have some books to share,
you should have seen those girls jump up and pounce on those books. They
consisted of: THAT HAIR THING and A TAPESTRY OF DREAMS, THE SISTERLOCKS BOOK
by JoAnne Cornwell; HAIRLOCKING EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW by Nekhena
Evans; LET'S TALK HAIR by Pamela Ferrell; NO LYE! by Tulani Kinard; GOOD
HAIR AND PLAITED GLORY by Lonnice Brittenum Bonner.
I shared with the girls different hair styles and my concerns for relaxers
and the importance of them not damaging their precious heads with chemicals.
The little girl said, but I want my hair to hang! I said there are plenty
of styles that will allow your hair to hang and still accentuate your
natural curl. The girls were very receptive and I just added that I'm so
proud to see girls at this age and older who are natural. They tend to have
a very strong sense of self! I stressed to the parents the importance of
uplifting these girls (most attend predominantly white schools and are among
few or are the only students of color at their schools) and affirming their
natural beauty! Page unveiled her Sisterlocks and the girls were just
amazed and loved touching and seeing her hair. I spoke with another mother
there who has had her Sisterlocks for about a month and she said it really
starts with the mothers. Once the mothers move beyond their hair struggles
the struggle will be easier for the girls. We can't ask and expect them to
not have these same struggles when they see us struggling and grappling with
these very issues!
I just wanted to share!

Debs Hair Jewelry

=========
Tamra,
You are absolutely correct, I just left her house
today, b/c I needed some more stuff. After the hair
day there was items I wanted and could not afford that
day. So I purchased what I could and asked her to let
me know when she was finished with a order I left. She
completed that order for me last week and I went to
pick it up today.
As Tamra mentioned Deb's spirals are the bomb. I have
many of them now and YES I am putting them all in my
hair at the same time.
I say this b/c Julie and one other person said I
looked Ghetto Fabu with some many hair ornaments...lol
but I like it...lol
I have some pics I took of my jewelry I brought today.
I am going to try to get them small, if not I will ask
Sandy again, to try compress them.
You can see the care in Deb's workmanship compared to
some ornaments I have purchased. She has the knowledge
you need, so u know exactly where the pieces come from
and their meaning. This is our crown and u don;t want
to just buy from anyone or at least I don't. The vibe
has to be in tune with me.
Umm let's see my gf brought 2 loc cuffs with gems
around them I am not good with the names of the gems,
but its a brown one it sorta reminds you of tigers
eye, I brought me a 3 piece spiral and bronze
streamer to wear when my hair grows longer. At the end
of it is a cowry shell, I love it.

They are finally taking on a more kinky look,m they
even feel like little balls in some places.
Some of the perm'd ends have curled up into my loc and
has started hugging the loc and it has a rounded shape
to it. I spoke w/my loctician and she said it is fine
as long as its not giving off a puffy fat appearance.
If it is she will have to take it down.

Corrections to Chicagoland Hair Day Pics

2008-11-25 02:39:46

There is a picture in the Chicagoland set that is mislabeled. The
one that is entitled "Coco" should actually be labeled "Tamra." I
don't mind my picture being used, but if it is used, I would like to
be properly named.
Also, I don't mean to be a killjoy, but it would be appropriate to
ask people whether or not they mind if their pictures are posted
before actually doing so. As I mentioned above, I don't mind
although I wasn't asked, but other people might.
After having brought that to everyone's attention, I would like to
add that Deb was a most gracious host, and that it was a really well-
planned event. I think we should do this every year at a different
venue.
P. S. I don't think you could really tell in the pictures, but Deb
has some absolutely beautiful locks--and she curled them the night
before.
Toodles!

My One Year Anniversary!

2008-11-24 11:56:32

Today I have had my Sisterlocks for one year!
It seemed to go by pretty fast.
I started with perm on the ends. Then I was braiding, banding and
styling more often. Now I mostly let my hair do its own thing.
This journey has taught me a lot of patience. I don't even think
about my hair growing and being long one day,I just figure it is
getting longer and as long as I stay healthy( God willing) it will be
there one day.
I think that the best thing I did besides getting Sisterlocks was
learning to retighten my own hair. I like being in charge of my own
hair. I took it a step further and took the consultant course but
even it I had not I would have taken the retightening course anyway.
Being a consultant is also teaching me patience.
I am ready to try more things with my hair. Nothing outrageous but I
have been so careful with my locks that I have barely put anything on
them beside water. I am willing to try more of the natural products.
I took a chance and colored my hair with a semi permanent rinse but I
wish that I had been a little more daring and went lighter, maybe
next summer.
Anyway, I have met some wonderful people here this past year and I
look forward to the future.

Re: Chicago Hair Day

2008-11-23 21:39:09

-HI
I love this style for me. It's so easy. After I wash my hair I use a
mousse and braid my hair into about 16 braids and put small perm rods
on the tips only. The perm rods mold my hair towards my face so I
won't have any stray locks pointing towards the sky. This style last
until I wash it out. It has a very strong hold.
I style my daughters locks in the same manner. To give it a little
girls look though, I pull the front up. She loves it. She is in the
kids photograph in the Chicago hair day. She is the small one with
glasses.

Lauryn Hill and Chicago Tribune

2008-11-20 11:24:55

This was taken from an article in Women News page 7 of
Chicago Tribune.
Lauryn Hill's dreadlocks, which she sported on the
cover of her 1999 Grammy - winning album, helped boost
the popularity of the hairstyle beyond reggea circles.
Some quotes from the article:
A Long Island Social Worker - It was a statement of
culture, that I want to present my hair in a natural
state.
Talib Mutawakkil - Basically it is an acceptance of
who I am.
People who wear locs say they have become what the
afro was in the 1970's - a celebration of their
African roots, and a desire to grow their hair in a
more natural form.
Bad news - Federal Express has fired at least 6
employees in the New York City area because they
insisted on wearing dreadlocks to work in accordance
to their rastafarian beliefs.

New SL Sista needs Help

My scalp is itching like crazy! I read the archives, so I know about
the ACV rinse. My question is does anyone know of any other remedy I
can use on my 3 day old locks. I really don't like the smell of the

Thank you for your prayers Kaylois.
Thankfully, me and my family are fine, and not everybody is.
My husband was supposed to fly home yesterday from OH.
Instead he had to rent a car and drive; not an easy task between the military
check points and the road closures into the city.
He made it home late list night in a little over 10 hours.
At our exit off the highway the police and military were checking ID's.
If you didn't live in the area, you were turned away.
Part of the problem is we live so close to both major airports, Kennedy and

My SL and natural hair experience

2008-11-13 22:48:17

First I want to thank CC and Susan for introducing me to this group.
Initially, I was very concerned about the exposed scalp look because my hair
is thin and soft. Strands of my hair can slip out of a braid that how soft
it is. When I had my first consultation and received three SL two of the SL
slipped out completely after three weeks.
However this group has truly empowered me. Thank you for the knowledge and
support.
I am so happy with my SL's. Yes, I have scalp showing but I know that will
go away soon. My SL's took 12 hours. My hair is longer than I expected. No
more shower caps. No more retwisting. No more hair combed out in the sink.
My consultant says it is freedom. I can agree with her. I have braided my
hair and perm rod the ends to get some fullness and less of my scalp is
showing. Thanks CC for the braid out. My first shampoo is scheduled for
this weekend and my consultant will perm rod it then.
This natural hair journey started for me in June of 2000. I had difficulty
with styling options and finding the "right" hair stylist to take care of my
hair during the transition period. Finding the hair stylist took 11 months.
In March of 2001 I cut off all the remaining perm. I did not know that it
was going to make such a dramatic change on my life. It has truly been
spiritual for me. My spirituality has increased. My self confidence has also
increased. The journey was not easy but I have learned to be more patience
and seek out information and that knowledge has empowered me.
I looking forwarding to my hair locking and maturing. I feel deep down that
this is the best thing for my hair. My edges in the front without the creamy
crack has began to grow. I look forward to seeing how long my hair can grow.
Lastly, I am still in a state of shock regarding the terrorist attack on our
country. It is a call for salvation. My prayer is that God call the unsaved
and they hear His call and respond. My prayers are also with the vast
numbers of victims and their families. Please pray for my son Jason and all
military personnel. He is in the navy on the USS Stennis an aircraft carrier
in San Diego.
Again thanks for the information. My pictures are coming.

Converting SLs to Traditional Locs

2008-11-13 18:10:04

To make a long story short, due to harrassment, I was forced to quit
my job that allowed me to do a little *bling* *bling*ing (on a small
scale of course, lol) and now I am waaaaay underemployed & money has
become an issue for me. I have had to reschedule 2 retightening
appointments due to lack of funds. I love my Sisterlocks, but if I
can't keep up the cost of maintaining them, I may have to convert the
to traditional locs. Anyone know anything about this process? Do I
just start twisting or what?
Again, I'm not going this route just yet. If I do, it will be a last
resort.

Waiting Waiting Waiting

2008-11-12 09:37:07

Gurl I feel ya! Some of the ladies here can tell you how excited I
was. When I decided to get SL I had *just* gotten my relaxer touched up
(March 2000). So you know I had some waiting to do before I could get that
1.5" of nappy hair to work with. Talk about excitedly waiting!! I pretty
much kept this email group going all by myself with my chatter, questions,
etc. It was the only thing on my mind, and I wanted to talk about it!
I asked more questions (sometimes the same questions over and over again),
did more web searching, reading, etc. than ever! I was devouring everything
I could about natural hair in general and Sisterlocks in particular. I
knew exactly what to expect from my hair and scalp as I went through this
transiton. And keep in mind I was doing 2 transitions at once. I was going
from permed to natural... and I was also transitioning to locks at the same
time. I was ready for it, though.
I was SO happy when I finally got my SLs in July. Even though most of my
hair was permed, my consultant locked it all... so I had hundreds of teeny
tiny braid-looking sprigs in my head, and my scalp was proudly showing
itself. Honey you couldn't tell me nuthin!
I'd curl that stuff, finger-comb it, and go on about my business. After
about 3 weeks I washed it for the first time, and that's when it started to
change. My nappy hair started to draw up and I could feel it trying to
settle into the locking pattern. I washed it regularly after that; and
each time I washed it, it would change. I loved it!!
I still love it. It's been 13 months now and I'm all natural. I cut off
all the permed hair in July... just before my SL birthday. <g
impatiently watching it grow. And lord is it ever growing!! I'm
retightening more often because it's growing so fast. I would never have
thought my hair would grow like this. It's amazing... and wonderful!
My goal at the moment is to get it back to the length it was before I cut
it so I can wear a roll in the back. I should be there soon.
My next goal will be to get my short hair on top to come down past my
nose... just because. :-)

As for me, I'm still loving these bad girls. Had a retightening this
past weekend and had Dawn do a slamming style for me. Cornrowed,
front and back up toward the crown. The ends were then braided
together for from a sort of basket on top. It's a very sistah-girl
twist on a traditional swept up style. very nice. Have gotten loads
of compliments from the folks in the office (the BBC is very
traditional, but they've come to expect some flavah from me!).
Have I said it yet? I LOVE MY SLS!!!

It does look nice. I am going to try that tonight. I usually do the

the cornrolls will give a different look.
That is what I like about Sisterlocks. The parting is so uniform

I'm glad to see you've enjoy all the web sites including my site. When I

information. I also enjoy reading the different journeys. Hang in there... it

I had the plessure this weekend to network with newly Certified consultant Dana
Hagan, of Columbus, Ohio. I also seen her back in April during the SL regional
session held in Detroit. The almost 2 hour drive was well worth it. We worked
on each other's locks and shared experiences.
She was able to SL fine "kitchen" hairs at the base of my neck that took 2
years almost to grow. I always had a problem with breakage in that area.
During my Perm days I always wore my neckline shaved close and cropped because
the hair would not gain any length there. I'm really excited to know someday I
will be able to pull my hair up in the back. You got to start somewhere.
I met Dana on this list .. so friendships made here are friendship kept for a

London calling again..........

2008-11-08 08:50:06

Hi Sandy, Kim and everyone at lockitup,
Just thought I'd let you know that over the past 8 months or so I've
really enjoyed the group from afar here in London. I log on as often
as I can because there's so little time at work and even less when I
get home! I don't write often but thought I'd say hello tonight.
Sometimes I feel like an alien as SL seems to be so much of a US
phenomenon! (although I know there's really no need to think like
that). My own locks are locking up nicely now and are now really
growing. After I did my training in San Diego in March things here
were very slow because I'd changed jobs and had work doing on our
house so there wasn't much time to do much. Interest here is growing
and one day, I know it'll spread like a bush fire, just as it is
there. I had my 1st client recently and that was something. There
are also quite a few potential clients in the pipeline so things are
definitely looking up.
Kim, I know it's been said so many times b4, but you are an ace
consultant. Your posts are so interesting to read. And Sandy, when
you do your training you might as well relocate to London! We need
some back up here - there's only two of us that I know of.
Anyway, must go to bed it's almost 11:56pm here and I'm exhausted.
(Went to a wedding yesterday and got back today).
Keep up the good work. Would love to hear from you.

Re: DISAPPOINTED W/RETIGHTENING CLASS FEE

2008-11-07 08:53:06

Pam,
One thing I've learned about Sisterlocks, the prices vary greatly,
depending on what the market will bear in a certain region. Take San
Diego, for instance. Here, the retightening fee will increase to $85
this Fall. The starting price for SL is $375. Those are the Home Office
prices. Most of us in San Diego who do Sisterlocks use these prices,
however, I know that people in Los Angeles pay a whole lot more. Some
of the LA women have driven the two hours down to San Diego to save
$150 on the cost of their Sisterlocks. That's why I say we need more
consultants. If a consultant is the only one for miles around, h/she
can pretty much charge whatever they want. Ever consider being a
consultant? :)

DISAPPOINTED W/RETIGHTENING CLASS FEE

2008-11-05 10:22:09

Hi Everyone,
I have been wondering when Yvonne Mobley would offer the retightening
class here in Miami, I am into my 9 month of SL's & I have called her
a few times concerning this. I recv'd a packet from her yesterday in
the mail with the dates & times she was offering it & a brief
questionaire about the care of my SL's.
I was really excited until I saw the price $125.00 is what she is
charging!!!! Now I need to take the class & I have no other choice
but to take it from her because there is no one else here in Miami
that can offer but Yvonne.
I was under the impression that the retightening class was $75.00 &
that included the tools. I remember someone had said here on this
group that they had to pay $75.00 plus pay for the tools.
I called my consultant she thought the class was $75.00 also, she is
going to a consultant meeting at Yvonne's & she is going to ask her
why the price is $125.00, maybe she is offering something extra in
the class that the other CTA are not offering????
Well anyway the class is October & December. I was really looking
forward to paying $75.00 like everyone else. Go figure?????

Sandy I think that style looks good on you!!!
I just got my hair washed and set on tiny perm rods today. It came
out looking like a tiny texturized afro. (really cute) The parts have
gone away some just like you said. I will be posting the pictures
tomorrow.

My Braidout

2008-11-04 19:38:18

I just uploaded two pictures of the finished product. It's nowhere near as
pretty as CC's, but I like it. The right side wouldn't do *anything*, so I
pulled it back with a little rubber band and stuck a gold cuff on one of
the locks. Then I put two more gold cuffs in my hair... just for good measure.
The reception starts in 2 minutes. I'm sure they'll be late getting
started. I missed the wedding because I had a class today, but I'm ready
to partay!!

Re: Can I Get Locked Up Now?

2008-11-04 08:07:40

This post is longer than I thought it would be -- I got
carried away....

more<<
1. This is a good option. Get some neat braids that will
last 2-3 months at a time. Each time you take the braids
down, put them back in to avoid perm temptation. If you
need tips on braid care for healthy hair, just ask. I wore
braids off and on for 5 years prior to locking up and
3 different braiders told me that I had the cleanest braids
and healthiest hair they've ever seen. I posted a picture
my braid style that I chose prior to locking -- a braid
weave. I made sure the length was the same as my natural
hair so that when I got SLs, there would not be as much of
a change. Some people (mostly non-black) thought I just got
a little trim in the beginning. It was a year later that
some realized that I had locs!
2. See a consultant to determine how much natural hair you
need for new SLs. I'm not using the SL technical jargon to
describe hair right now but the less kink to your hair, the
more hair you should allow to grow out first. If you have
wonderfully kinky/nappy/tight hair, only 1.5 inches may be
enough. If your coil is a little looser AND/OR your hair
is what some folks may call "soft" -- kinky or not -- you
will need more length to avoid frequent trips to your
consultant during the transition.
Final Comment:
I know how excited you are but Missy's and other's comments
were dead on. You and your hair should be ready to embark on
the wonderful locking journey. If you are concerned that
you might yield to the relaxer temptation, that is all the
more reason for you to hang out with these virtual support
groups. You need a firm resolve for natural hair because
locs (even SL) should be considered a permanent life style
hair decision.
Hope this helps.

CW your story is so similiar to mine in everything you
have said down to the cut, and perm'd hair.
I have been SL'd for 9 months now. I stopped perming
my hair 4/2000 and got my SL's 12/2000. This is my
experience and mine alone. I cannot tell you whether
to get your hair done now or to wait. I sat on this
list for a while b4 I finally took the plunge, and
here is why.
I needed to educated myself on SL's. I needed to know
what look I was going for, I wanted to meet others who
had looks that I could see and get options from as you
are doing now. I knew what the perm'd ends would look
like and I had to be ready. I also had to be ready for
the transition. When I got my hair lock'd I had all
new growth in the back b/c for 5 months I did nothing
with it. I was giving my sides and crown a rest while
the back grew and grew.
The best advice I can offer is this don't rush. If you
have patience in the end your hair will reward you for
it...
Good luck on your journey!

How long did it take to cornrow the braids? Was it easy or a
challenge? Have fun at the wedding.

Can I Get Locked Up Now?

2008-11-03 07:22:39

Hello everyone!
I'm new to the group, and am thinking (VERY SERIOUSLY) about locking
my hair. I'm in that ugly, just letting my perm grown out, letting my
natural grow in stage, and am really anxious to go ahead and get
started. My last relaxer was about 2 months ago and I'm so proud of
myself for having made it this far! Minor victory in the big scheme
of things, but I'm proud nonetheless! Anyway, my hair was most
recently cut in a layered, Halle Berry-type style, with short,
tapered backs and sides and gradually longer, layered top and bangs.
The nape of my neck is the shortest of all. I have about 1/4 inch of
new growth and the remaining hair (longest part in the front) is
about 2 and 1/2 inches of straggly permed hair. I'll be so glad when
its gone! I never thought I'd feel this way, but I love the way my
natural roots (what little there are of them) feel.
My question...can I get sisterlocks now? What are my options? I've
contemplated braids to allow my hair to grow out more, but after
looking at the Initial Locking photos of Michele and Teri, I want
them now!! I just can't envision going through the next 6-8 months
doing my morning ritual of trying to curl my hair and make it look
presentable. I'm tired of seeing hair on my bathroom floor and sink
each day! I'm sick of the smell of burning hair as I try to do
something with this stuff.
I live in Jonesboro, GA, and saw that StarrLexx is in Conyers, GA.
Can I come to you for an consultation? What advice can you or others
on the board give me at this point? Kim, can you tell me more about
Michelle's hair at the time of her initial session? I saw in one of
the other posts that her hair was about 2 inches long. Was it all
natural? I absolutely love her hair!! I don't want to wait too long
and give in to the urges of looking presentable and just go and get a
perm. That would be a temporary solution to the problem.
Thanks to all in advance for your thoughts.

Hmmm... thinking out loud here. I don't know what you're using on your
scalp; but sometimes the product you're using is what causes the itching
and flaking.
Here's something that a few of us have used with good results. Ebene
Naturals Scalp Therapy. http://www.ebenenaturals.com.
Also the apple cider vinegar rinse is helpful for this. The following
recipe was originally posted by Sigrid. The recipe is from Pam Ferrell's
book "Let's Talk Hair":

Gerri your hair looks wonderful. Your hair looks so rich and healthy.
Do you have any perm in your hair?
CC - wow is basically what I wanna say about your braid-out, what a
brilliant idea of simplicity.
Sandy - I cannot wait to see your outcome for the wedding.

there is a style in the new Sisterlocks book this
sister had her SL's plaited together for a casual day

I just uploaded a picture of my cornrows. I washed my hair tonight and
braided it into 7 cornrows from front to back.
I have a class tomorrow afternoon. I'll wear a headwrap. When I get out
of school, I take down the cornrows and hopefully my hair will look great
for my sister-in-law's wedding tomorrow.
Of course I'll take a picture and uploaded it before I go!

Back in town. Hope you all are well.
CC your braid out look is really becoming on you. You have so much
hair...how in the world did you get so much curl with only seven braids. Do
you have pictures of the braids in?

Re: [LockItUp] Hello All!!!

2008-11-01 05:30:03

Congrats Gina, This is a great group of people. They are very supportive. I
like you also decided to take the plunge and go natural. I also knew
Sisterlocks would be the best thing for me. I ended up cutting my relaxer off
about 3 weeks ago and will probably get Sisterlocks in January for my 25th
birthday. However, the awesome thing about Sisterlocks is that you don't have
to cut your hair to get them. I have also decided to take the class and become
a consultant in November. I am recording my journey to Sisterlocks on the
internet if you would like to check it out you can find a link to it on the
Bookmark page at the LockItUp site. It's called A Hair Catharsis. Welcome and
keep us posted on your journey.

Re: Hello All!!!

2008-11-01 00:13:11

Congrats, Gina! You are embarking on a journey that
you'll only thank yourself for later.
You are fortunate. One of the consultants frequents this
group. I've seen her work and she did a good job.
They come in several sizes but all SL are small
as compared to other locs. When you talk to your
consultant, you'll need to be clear about what size
you want. You can't go wrong with getting larger
SLs, IMO.
I'm not sure if you mean before or after SL. I'll
address while you are growing out your natural hair
(before). What is nice about SL, there is nothing
special you have to do prior to getting them but come to
the session with a clean head. Unlike when getting a
perm where you get warnings not to scratch your scalp!
Try not to use too much heat (curling/flat irons) on
your new growth. Heat can change the texture of your
hair, permanently. You want/need your naturally kinky
hair for locking. Don't cut off all of that permed
hair thinking you are doing the consultant a favor.
See your consultant if you must color your hair within
the next 9 months. She may have advice on when it would
be best.
Have you ever worn braids? You won't have that much scalp
showing. Look at the pictures on the site and relax!
The exposed scalp is temporary and there are many things
people do to minimize that. Hang out and chat here and
you'll be fine.
