Well, I finally have some pics for you, but they're not that great.
The day I got Sisterlocks, my consultant roller set my hair too tight
for my liking, so that's why my hair looks so short. I did buy new
rollers, but those pictures are on a different roll.
So nothing great, but look under pictures, then naturelle's pictures

Hi Pam,
That book is soooo inspiring!!! And like you, I to am looking forward
to having long locks. There was a time in my life I never invisioned
having hair past my neck.....let alone my shoulders. But, I now know
that it IS possible for we; as black women to have long flowing
locks!!! (That is really our OWN hair). Once I felt only a few
blessed women (AA), with that special "something" could attain long
hair. It may take some a little longer, but length is now only a
matter of time.
Thank God for sister locks!!

Sisterlocks Styling Milestone

2008-09-28 08:41:21

Ladies, I have a major announcement to make. For the first time in my
almost 6mths long SL journey, I put rollers in my hair!!!!!!! I have always
been the "no style" type. Any thing involving rollers, curlers, styling
tools just always seemed so difficult to me. Last night, after washing my
hair with Dr. Bronners Almond soap, I decide to try using sponge rollers on
my hair. It took me FOREVER and I didnt even go all the way to the back of
my head because it was just too hard. I woke up this morning, took out the
rollers and lo and behold, my head is covered with tight little curls. WOW!
I was blown away. I can't believe I have never done this before. It looks
so nice and so different. I love the freestyle look but this definitley a
change. I will try and take pictures tonight on my friend's digital camera
and post them. You all have inspired me to even attempt to roll my hair.
I'm sure I'll only do this for special occasions, but it's nice to know that
this option is open to me.
I was looking at the pictures folder last night and thats what inspired me
to curl my hair. Each and every one of you looks FABULOUS. Each person's
hair is different, but lovely. The best thing about it is that you can tell
from the looks on people's faces that they feel good about themselves. You
can see the inner beauty that is exposed by letting your outside be the way
that God intended. The creamy crack has been hiding our beauty, but I feel
so proud and happy when I see it shining through all of you. I feel so
blessed to be part of the Sisterlocks family.
Peace and love to all

Re: Hairsetters

2008-09-25 00:09:49

I went to www.conair.com. The steam curling irons range in size from
3/4 to 1 1/2 inches. They charge much more for the curling irons on
the website. Walmart was charging $19.99 for the 1 inch.

Question???

2008-09-24 22:36:15

The noticeable growth is amazing. My hair has been cut 3 times in the past
year, and it's now the same length it was when I started -- even with the
shrinkage. I have no idea how long it would be if it was straight. Longer
than it ever was before I'm sure.

Hairsetters

2008-09-24 17:44:02

I know that some of you use the Caruso hairsetter. I saw on a
commercial that Conair has the same type of thing. Yesterday I was
in Walmart and I saw a Conair steam curling iron. Has anyone tried
this? The package says it promotes healthy hair. I would think that
it would be just as safe as the steam rollers. I remember somone
else in the group asked the same question before but I don't recall
an answer.
I had a steam curling iron many years ago and the water from the
steam used to drip and burn my shoulders. I did not see anything on
the package about that. I really liked that curling iron until I
started to get burns. I am thinking that approx. 20 years later this
curling iron is new and improved. I have not used a curling iron on
my locks since the first day but maybe this one would be OK. The
barrel is 1 inch thick so the curls would be loose.

2008-09-23 05:45:52

Wanda I also have perm'd ends that look str8. I agree
with Sandy u have to make you hair do what u want.
Take my misbehavin locs. They have a mind of their
own, when I roll them my ends stick out of the roller
and when I braid them they jump away from the braid.
I have found that the only thing tat work is to braid
my hair until I get to the perm'd part, and then mist
my hair again and roll it as if I was rolling my hair
when I had the perm.
Can u understand what I am trying to say, b/c I am not
sure that last part was clear if not we can talk in
one of the Saturday chats or email.
My str8 ends can look and behave wonderful on some
days, we have had a bit of rain lately here in
Chicago. That is not good for my hair, b/c then I look
like a scarey chicken head...with points all over my
head...I never let me hair get wet outside.

Understandable. That's why I only put the heat on the relaxed hair. I had

Rest assured, it will grow back! After having my first child, I lost all

I didn't even notice any balding like that.

Vetta,
I don't think it matter that you are pregnant at all with getting
Sisterlocks. The only thing I will tell you about being pregnant and
this is my consultant's experience, not mine, is that she suffered
from post-partum alopecia and after pregnancy began shedding hair
around her hairline. Her doctor told her after about 6 months, her
hair would grow back, but she was a bit upset about losing her
hairline after working so hard to grow it. It may not happen to you,
but it's a possibility.

Re: Questions???

2008-09-18 17:48:49

I have that kind of hair that was thin when permed and appeared thick
when in its natural state. Dr. Cornwell wants us to use different,
less negative terminology when describing our hair. I think my hair
is fine as opposed to being dense.
I had the plucked chicken look for a good month. I was really
distressed when it returned after my first retightening. I just went
with it. I didn't cover it or anything. It seemed styling it helped
a lot. Now 11 months later it is thicker and I don't style often. I
still see the parts in the top when I retighten but no plucked
chicken. I noticed that even the traditional lock wearer have parts
showing in the top when they retwist. I am so over all of that now.

Re: [LockItUp] Question???

2008-09-18 10:52:08

You can call the home office to order it now, but it should be available in
bookstores soon.
I don't think so. Since there are no chemicals involved, I don't see where
it would have any effect.
The plucked chicken look *always* disappears in a few weeks. Not everyone
has that look; but if you do end up with lots of scalp showing for a few
weeks, it'll thicken up and fill in quickly; and believe me it's worth
it! My hair is thick, and I had the plucked chicken look, but I didn't
care. I wore my Sisterlocks proudly and enjoyed the freedom. After a
couple of shampoos, the scalp was no longer showing.

[LockItUp] Question???

2008-09-18 09:21:48

All,
This might be a silly question. But how do I order the new Sisterlock
book??? I was looking on the website and did not see anything about a new
book. Maybe I was looking wrong. Please help. I think I am ready to make
the step to sisterlocks. I currently wear two-strand twist extension and
have about 3-4 inches of natural hair (no perm). I am also 8 weeks
pregnant. Does it make a difference if you are pregnant and get sisterlocks???
I also had thin hair (when it was in a relaxer form) I had plenty of hair
to cover my head but I felt it was thin not as thick as I wanted it. Now
that I have it all natural it is very soft and fine. It looks thick in an
afro but I am scared of the plucked chicken look since I know it is not as
thick as I like. Has anyone had thin hair to begin sisterlocks with and
found out over time that the plucked chicken look disappeared and their
hair seemed to thicken up???
Thanks for the help!!!!

Re: Fickle Client

2008-09-18 00:05:21

Well I would like to put my 3 cents in (smile) I was one of those
fickle clients 6 years ago!!!!! I got SL's put in as most of you
already know this story by Yvonne Mobley here in Miami in 1995 she
took about 10 hours putting them in & I paid her $300.00 back then
(her prices are much higher now) but anyway I took mine down the next
day, I think it was a combination of me not being ready & not doing
my homework & also her not giving me enough information on SL's, back
then there was not a forum like this & she was new to SL's also. If I
had known that my hair would look better as time went on I probably
would have felt better about the plucked chicken look. When I told
her I had taken them down she was very gracious & professional she
told me she understood & that when I was ready she would do them
again for me at a discount.
I went back to her about 3 or 4 years later for another consult & she
told me she would do them again for me if I promised not to take them
down again, but I decided to wait until Dec. 2000 & she referred me
to another consultant as she was not taking any new clients at that
time. My consultant Sherrie is great I like her very much & she did a
great job. I paid her $350.00 she took about 10 hours also with a
break in between & I love my SL's very much, I will never take them
down, they are mine forever!!!!!
Pam
Happily SL'd 8 months

Fickle Client

2008-09-17 10:05:18

Why would you not do someone who doesn't plan to keep them forever.
What
I'd like to add my two cents. I know to never sell Sisterlocks to
people who aren't ready for the transformation. So if a client took
down her sisterlocks, then I would feel as if I was not thorough in my
consultation. I would be more upset with myself than with the client.
Many people think that consultants do the sample/test locks so that
they can use different locking patterns and determine which is best for
the client's hair. That's only partially true. The test locks are also
used as a reality check experience for the client.
However, if the client decided at a later time that they would like
Sisterlocks again, I would not hesitate to do a consultation with them,
this time, making sure that EVERYTHING was covered. I would also do
their sisterlocks and they would have to pay me my charge for the
initial Sisterlocks package all over again.
P.S. - Don't apologize for the post. I enjoy reading others' views on
things.

Thanks for the tip on maintaining curls. I have had my SLs for a
little over two weeks now and have been rolling my hair pretty much
every day. That gets pretty tiring, so pin curling them is a great
idea and I will have to start doing that and seeing how long my curls
last. I do get tired of rolling them every day.
Thanks again,
Wanda

Re: [LockItUp] Relaxed Hair and Sisterlocks

2008-09-15 13:07:02

My relaxed ends were put into the lock pattern, but I now know that usually
it is not. There's no point in taking all that time and effort to put
relaxed hair into the locking pattern since it isn't going to lock. It
will just have to be cut off eventually.
In Dr. Cornwell's book "That Hair Thing and the Sisterlocks Approach", she
has pictures of SLs with relaxed ends left loose. The pictures that CC
recently uploaded show the relaxed hair left loose also.
I think this is the best way to do it. It sure would have kept me from
looking like a plucked chicken. :-)

A Question for the Consultants

2008-09-14 09:51:13

When you say that a person must have at least 1-1/2 inches of natural hair

measurement?

A Sisterlocks Story

2008-09-14 07:53:11

Hi Everyone,
I just wanted to share with you that two days in a row, I was out at two
different stores and two sisters came up to me and asked me about my hair.
They both absolutely loved my hair, were both natural (one with twists and
one with braids). Of course I preached the Sisterlocks gospel to them, and
referred them to the website for more information. One lady asked me if she
could touch my hair and when she did she couldn't believe how soft it was.
I was thinking about these two incidents and it occured to me, that back in
the days of my creamy crack addiction I don't ever remember someone stopping
me in the store to comment about my hair. With all the millions of
hairstyles that I've had this NEVER happened. Sisterlocks are truly
amazing. I just feel so happy and FREE!!! I wish all Sistas could feel
that freedom!. Happy Monday everyone!
Peace and Love
Sue

Gerri,
Thanks, you're looking good too!
I have pretty much all natural hair. I used Naturalaxer in December
2000 (which is basically a texturizer), so some of the tips are
straight. I have no idea how many locks I have. When I'm banding to
wash I put about 10 locks in each group and I have at least 30
sections, so I'm guessing about 300+. I went for a retightening at 4
weeks. When did you do yours?

Re: [LockItUp] CC's Pics

2008-09-12 19:46:17

I've done three clients, although my first client no longer has her
Sisterlocks. I uploaded pictures of my second client, Brenda, and there's a
folder of her pics in our files section, as well. Brenda had alot of
breakage and loss of hairline growth due to years of extensions and weaves.
She's been natural for about 5-6 years. She was ready to cut all her hair
off, after letting it grow, when she saw me and my Sisterlocks! I locked
her in June and she's been locked for two months, now. She's so excited and
loves the freedom of her locks. She's received plenty of inquiries, as
well! If you take a look at her initial picture and her first retightening,
you will notice the little lock in the front and how it has grown! I was
unable to lock all of her back because it was too short, so we're letting it
grow out and locking as it grows.
Aquilla was my third client. She had about 1 1/2-2 inches of new growth,
though I suspect more in some areas. She's thirteen and has been wanting to
go natural but didn't see a viable option to transitioning from her relaxer.
She really liked the idea that she didn't have to have all her hair cut
off to get Sisterlocks. It took me a total of about 19 1/2 hours with
breaks. I worked 14 hours straight to complete the front half of her head
(there were small breaks!). Again, she absolutely loves her hair and her
mom is very pleased and appreciative.

Good Morning SL Sistas,
I forgot to tell ya'll that when I went to get my last retightening

hair. It is a strengthener it is from Taliah Waajid, Black Earth
Products out of Atlanta. It is called S.T.E.P.S Strengthener herbal
hair & scalp recipe. It is very light & it smells great it is like a
light grease but not grease & not oil, it is really absorbent. I
bought some it costs 5.99 & I really like it. It has alot of herbs in
it like
natural herbs, indian hemp,yarrow root,rosemary,chickweed,
nettle, african ground herbal complex, burdock, coltsfoot, sage,
chamomile, vitamin e, bio-flavnoids & fruit fragrance, bay laurel
This company has a whole line of products, maybe I will try some of

Sue/OOP's on curling iron

2008-09-09 02:55:56

I went into the site you listed for conair, and didn't see the
styling tool that I have. Mine is like a flat iron, with a water
reservoir at the tip. Easy to handle, and I really like it. The one
on the site probably gives you a tighter curl. I found mine at
walmart for about $17- Yolanda*

Sue/Steam Iron

2008-09-08 20:34:39

Sue I have that curling iron, and I love it. While at the Homecoming,
I ask the Dr. about using this curling iron, and she said steam was
good for the hair. When you use this styling tool it will straighten
your hair remarkably. You bump the curl or slight curl into the
locks. You will for the most part have a straighten do with a slight
smooth curl, your hair will feel very light on your head. However
since my trip, I've decided not to use it until my hair actually
locks. I was told by a sister out of New York(Nijiya), that I may be
disturbing the locking process by steaming over the cuticle, which
keeps the hair to flat for locking. So I put it away until I,m
further along in my process. Do you think you may have entered what
they refer to as the teenage stage, referring to the hair problems you
were worried about? I'm not bunching, and my hair is all natural,
but I could relate to the fuzzys, and stray hairs. You said you were
at 5mo, and I'm at 6, and I felt like I just entered a stage to be
concerned about also, but my consultant wasn't worried about it.Check
with your consultant, she should be able to help. Hope this helps

Hi everyone

2008-09-07 13:06:59

I am just back from Orlando. It was so hot and humid down there. I
freestyled most of the time.
After swimming in the pool daily I decided to wash my hair. I had to use the
hotel's shampoo conditioner because I forgot my own. I figured after 11
months my locks would do fine and they did. I washed, put the top in Bantu
knots and braided the back. I used the hotel's blow dryer to get the excess
water out and went to bed. The next day my hair looked really good. I went
in the pool but did not dunk my head the last couple of days because I did
not want to use that shampoo again.
The week before I was in Mississippi and Tennessee for a family reunion. I am
glad to be at home now.
I am trying to think of something to do to celebrate my year of Sisterlocks.
I am thinking of coloring my hair. The gray is really sprouting but I am
torn between vanity and wanting to be totally natural. I think that vanity
will win.
I think I am going to use the Sisterlock conditioner for the first time. We
got pretty dark as in tan on those trips so I figure my hair probably got
pretty fried also. The Sisterlock moisturizer has really worked well but
maybe I need a special treatment now with the conditioner.
I did not take a whole lot of pictures but when I develop them if there is a
good one of my hair I will post it.

Hi Ladies! First of all, I want to thank each and everyone of you who
posted responses to the pictures I uploaded. Now that I have gotten
some good feedback from those of you who have been sisterlocked
longer than I have, it makes me feel even more confident about my
locks.
Some of you wanted to know if I have natural hair, or relaxed hair.
Actually, I have both. If you notice in the photos, some of my hair
is matte, and some is shiny. The shiny part is where I still have
the relaxer. Basically, I think my sisterlocks journey will probably
be very similar to Sandy's, as she also started with a lot of relaxed
hair.
Some of you also wanted to know how I style my hair. I just set it
with water and those fat, orange perm rods once a week. I use end
papers, too, because the rods have tiny teeth on them, and tend to
snag my many stray hairs. Then, every night after that, I just make
several pin curls with my locks and pin them in place with metal
single prong clips. I take those out in the morning, fluff, and go!
Day after day, I comb through everyone's beautiful sisterlock
pictures, and I think we all look beautiful, ladies! Kudos to us :-).
Thank you all for your support. I really love this group, and I love
my sisterlocks!!!!

Re: [LockItUp] Sisterlock veterans

2008-09-05 17:01:38

Hi Angela!!
I've only had my Sisterlocks for a year, so I don't think I'd fit into the
'veteran' category, but I might have a suggestion or 2.
First, what kind of hot rollers are you using? Do they use steam with the
heat or just heat alone? I think some kind of moisture with the rollers
might help them to hold a curl. If your rollers don't have steam, try
lightly spritzing with water before you roll it... just enough to put some
moisture in the hair.
I haven't encountered this problem so far. My curls hold whether I use
moisture or dry. I usually don't use any heat when I roll them. I just
use my sponge rollers, and I usually roll it after washing. I let it get
almost dry and then roll it and leave the rollers in overnight. Whenever I
roll it and I haven't just washed it, I spritz it or apply the SL moisture
treatment just before rolling.
If I roll them with no moisture at all, the curls will hold for maybe a
day, but no longer; whereas if I use some type of moisture when I roll,
they'll last 3 or 4 days.
I don't know how long your hair is; but I'm assuming that if you've had
your SL for three years, it's probably a lot longer than mine.... so maybe
my suggestions won't help you at all.
Do you use the Caruso hair setting system? It's fast, and it uses heat and
steam. It works well with Sisterlocks. Unfortunately I can't use it at
the moment because my hair is too short for the rollers, and I haven't yet
checked into ordering more of the smaller ones.
Well... this message got a lot longer than I intended. :-)

Re: 2 Questions

2008-09-03 14:27:46

of my locks...
Sue, my hair did a similar thing - I had a lot of permed hair on my
ends and much of my new growth is kind of straight in the top. I
think my hair did the same thing that you described. It was very
fuzzy and my consultant told me that I was experiencing bunching (my
straight, permed hair was trying to crawl back into the lock). I
know that sounds weird but I can't describe it any other way. My
consultant advised me to continue to separate them very carefully and
be patient because the fuzziness will eventually disappear. She was
right - it has. The locks are still forming and learning to do what
they need to do - but they are much less fuzzy. They are a year old
today - actually!!!
I hope this helps - take care!

2 Questions

2008-09-03 03:58:05

Hi everyone,
I have two questions for the group. First, yesterday I was in the drugstore
and saw a steam curling iron by Conair. Has anyone seen these or used them?
It seems like this type of curling iron would be better for our hair than a
traditional one because of the steam. I didn't buy it yet, I figured I
would ask the group. What do you all think? If you go to this page
http://www.conair.com/curling2.html you can see the steam'n'shine curling
iron that I'm talking about.
My second question is about a weird thing that's happened to a few of my
locks. It seems as if some of them have been pulled at the ends, and
instead of my little curlie qs, I have long wispy ends. Does that make
sense? Has anyone experienced this problem. Should I do something to fix
this? Help ladies. I'm worried that I may have compromised the integrity
of those locks. My hair is in a super fuzzy state right now. When I try
to separate after washing there are so many stray pieces of hair that my
fingers get caught in. I think I may have inadvertently pulled these locks
when I was trying to separate. Any advice would be much appreciated.
Peace and love

2008-09-01 21:30:12

I finally got my film developed from the Homecoming convention. I
posted 25 pictures in the "photos" section. If you're at the LockItUp
group website, look to your left. It's a new link. Hope you like the
photos. If you recognize someone you believe would prefer not to be on
the internet, let me know and I'll remove the picture. I put the 25
pics in a photo album named Homecoming 2001.

Last year's shirts were white with purple ink.

I took the consultant training class in August of 1999. It was $625 if
you paid 2 weeks ahead of time. Otherwise, it was $675. I hear it's
gone up quite a bit since then.

Thanks Pam-
I have a few more where you can actually see my hair. I'll probably post them
soon.
