Hello Ladies,
Sorry I missed the chat tonight, I was getting my SL's retightened.
It only took 2-1/2 hours this time she charges 20.00 an hour. My
consultant says I am taking very good care of my SL's she says they
are not dry or dull, no slippage, no locks growing together she says
I am seperating them very well, she says the color has not damaged my
hair at all.
I asked her was my hair growing or slipping she said I only have new
growth no slippage in my locs!!!!
She said it is true that some people like herself have slippage from
the SL's reconstructor but that my hair is not effected by it. She
says keep on taking good care of my hair & also that putting heat to
them is not bad as long as you don't over do it or scorch them.
I'm in love with my SL's !!!!!!

Kim-
That's great to hear. Your business is doing well. I'm still contemplating
taking the training soon.
BTW-I finally posted those Homecoming glamour shots (and a few more hard to see
pics) in the files. You can take a look when you have time.
Devon
What a great thing to do in your spare time. Good idea. I'll be sure to
have a man with locks on my desktop at work. Can't wait.
-Kim
I buy the starter shampoo by the gallon and offer a free refill service
for as long as they're using the starter shampoo, usually up to six
months. After that, I sell them the individual 4 oz. bottles for $3.50.
Once they've graduated from the starter shampoo, and want to continue
using sisterlock products I charge the following:
Moisture Treatment - $8
Reconstructor/Conditioner - $13
Herbal Spray Moisturizer - $12
Herbal Shampoo - $12
Tea Water Shampoo - $7
Tea Water concentrate - $11
Salon Shampoo - $6
Salon Concentrate - $10
I'll be getting my 'R' Certification soon. This means, I'll be able to
teach my clients how to retighten their hair, instead of them waiting
for the Home Office to offer a retightening class. I will keep my price
aligned with the Home Office. Starting in the Fall, a retightening
class will be $85, which will include a set of tools (clip tool and
hook tool). My price will be $85 as well.

Sandy that sounds great, I would like to try it. What does it smell
like?? I have been using the rosemary rinse in a spray bottle from CD
it is very nice. I have been wearing my hair curled all week , I set
it on Sunday so it was tighly curled, every morning I spritz it with
the rinse, I love the smell, my hair is still curly but it has
loosened up some now, it really looks nice. I have a retightening
tonight,I am going to ask my consultant if my locks are growing are
slipping. I thought it was alot of new growth at the roots, we'll
see.
Pam 8 months
I bought the spray moisturizer a few months ago, tried it once, and didn't
like it. It seemed to leave some kind of filmy residue feeling on my
hair. It wasn't something that could be seen, but I could feel it when I
touched my hair. So I never used it again. I didn't say much about it
because I didn't want to be bad-mouthing one of the SL products.
Since I didn't get around to washing my hair the other day, the itchies
were starting in that spot on the top of my head. So I pulled out the
moisturizer again yesterday, sprayed my hair, and loved it. It's a *very*
good moisturizer. It stopped the itching immediately, and I didn't feel
that funny filmy feeling at all. I'm guessing the filmy feeling was due to
the relaxer in my hair, and now that I no longer have any permed hair
(YAY!), the moisturizer was able to penetrate my locks and do what it was
supposed to do.
I *highly* recommend this stuff!

Hi Ladies! I have a couple of questions. One: Did anyone go to last
year's Sisterlock Homecoming? Two: If anyone did, what color(s) were
the Homecoming T-shirts last year? I ask this because my fellow St.
Louis Sisterlock sisters and I are supposed to be wearing the T-
shirts from last year at the Black Expo next week, and I need to know
how to coordinate what I'm wearing. Any response that is given would
be greatly appreciated.

Hey folks,
Something I do in my spare time is make desktop images (or wallpaper). I
made a couple of new images that you can download from my wallpapers website

The two new papers are called Naturally Free and Natural Beauties. You'll

I'm in the process of looking for high-resolution, good quality images of
men with dreads, so those of you who might feel strange about having a
picture of a woman on your desktop, don't feel left out! *lol*

Any of you who don't know how to size and compress the photos should

I'm not Sandy, but 75 DPI is sufficient for viewing on the web. You only

sized down.

I went to see Sheila today about the locks that were unravelling. It turns
out only one of them was coming loose. It was locked in two places and
totally looose in between those two areas. She manipulated it with a *very*
fine tooth comb to get the locked portions together and then retightened
what was left.
I asked her if I should go back to the starter shampoo and she just laughed
and told me no. She said that with my wavy hair she expected to see more
of that kind of thing a long time ago; but since this is the first time it
has happened... and it was only one lock... I'm in good shape.
Now here's my question. I didn't get to wash my hair last weekend because
I was out of town. Can I wash it today without worrying about that lock
loosening again? Should I band that one little lock when I wash my hair?

The other day we were talking about the Sisterlocks shampoos. Here's what
JoAnne says about them in the new book:
Tea Water Formula
This shampoo has a lightly alkaline pH and works best in the very
tightly-coiled, but fragile hair type that locks best in Sisterlocks. It
is also very effective in softening this hair type.
Salon Formula Shampoo
This shampoo has a slightly acid pH factor and works best in hair that has
a wave pattern to it. Deep cleans and also has some moisturizing properties.
The above shampoos come in spray bottles and concentrate refills.
Herbal Menthol Shampoo
Not in spray bottle. This shampoo delivers a mild, invigorating tingle to
the scalp. Recommended for mature locks only.

Since we have two chats each week, I'm going to change the time for one of
them.
As before, I'll do it by poll. First I will ask whether we should keep
both chats on weekdays, or if we should put one of them on the weekend.
After we've decided that question, I'll do a poll asking for times.
On both polls, the answer that gets the most votes will win... so be sure
to vote!!

I think the reconstructor has caused some problems for me, too. After a
whole year, it was only after using the reconstructor that I'm noticing
some slippage in a few of my locks (in the nearly straight hair on the
top). I'm going to Everette's today and have Pam take a look and fix
them. Then I'll leave the reconstructor alone. Maybe I'll try it again
next year.

Ami,
Your locks are only a little over a week old. It is suggested that
women who want to learn how to retighten their own hair wait six
months, or until their locks are not slipping. Usually, the first
retightening is scheduled 2-4 weeks after the initial locking session.
I highly recommend that you wait until you're feeling better, then go
to your consultant for your first follow-up retightening. As far as a
crochet hook is concern, steer clear of it. Once you're ready for the
retightening class, you'll get a SL hook tool and clip tool.

worked up the nerve because I still have a handful of locks on the top
that haven't locked yet.

Can anyone give me any advice on how to retighten my sisterlocks my self?
I don't have access to an official tool, can someone suggest something else

I have heard of using crochet hooks, are there other options?
Can anyone describe how I can copy the "reverse 4" on myself?

I'm sure you can do it in Adobe. It was created to work with pictures.
Whenever you save a file in jpeg or jpg format, you should get an option to
compress it.
A good size (in inches) is 4w x 3h. Make sure you scan no higher than 150
dpi (72 is even better). To compress, I usually go between 25 and 35%.
I use Paint Shop Pro, which is similar to Adobe. In the resizing area I
can resize by pixels or by inches. I can also change the resolution. If
you have both of these options, always change the resolution first (if it
is at 350 or 400, change it to 150 or 72). After you make that change,
then change the size in inches or pixels.
I was thinking about changing the time for one of our weekly chats. Monday
and Thursday are now set at the same time. I'm thinking of making one of
them later. I'll let you know.
The book is available to anyone. They don't have to be a consultant and
they don't have to have Sisterlocks. It'll be in bookstores soon.
They don't have any products or books or anything on the website yet. You
have to call the home office to order the book.

Help me scream.....YAY!
As for the new head I was working on, I started at 10 am and with several
breaks, doing chores, I was able to complete the front two sections by 1 am.
We were leaving at 5 am to head to NY, so we finished packing showered and
I started on the nape area at 3 am. I finished at 4:20am and we got
everyone else up and left for the airport. She's the first client that I've
done straight like that. I made sure to be quite meticulous about her front
two sections. She is also my first client transitioning from a relaxer.
Her hair is very dry and brittle and broken off, but has been maintained by
a beautician, so she has had regular trims.
Her mother told me that she's wanted to go natural since she knew I was
natural about three years ago, but living in Georgia she had no one to care
for natural hair, so she was stuck with the relaxer. Aquilla told me that
she wanted a healthy way to grow out her relaxer and she really liked
Sisterlocks. Plus, I mentioned to her how healthy it is for her hair and
how much it will grow. Just like she wore all the extensions, only this
time it will be her hair, down her back and healthy!! I showed her all the

You're welcome, Anya!
Of course, the most negative reaction has been from family members. Her
aunt saying what are you going to do when you want to "wear your hair"
again? Cut it off? AS IF, she's not already "wearing her hair"!!
At this point, most of her peers like it. Some know that they're not ready
for locks and her half-sister has decided she wants locks. She has had
absolutely NO REGRETS! For the record, she doesn't plan to ever stop
"wearing her hair~Sisterlocked"!!
CC
Hi everybody,
This weekend I went to a big Barbeque. One family arrived with their
daughters, ages 11 and 14. I know the parents, but this was my first
time meeting their girls. The 11 year old had on a big floppy hat,
but I could see some shoulder length locks peeking out from under
it. "I love your hair," I said to her. "Thanks, I like yours, too,"
she said. "Are yours Sisterlocks?" I told her they were. "Mine are
too," she said.
She had had her SLs for about two years and when she took off her hat
they were full, thick and glorious! This was great because several
of my friends were there and I could show them, up close and
personal, what my matured locks were likely to end up looking like.
This child was able to go in and out of the swimming pool with no
problem (and she looked so cute!)
Another thing that I was so pleased to see is that this child's mom
had a short afro and the 14 year old had completely "naptural" hair,
too. The 14 year old was going to be a cheerleader at a mostly
(99.9%) white high school and she had the cutest afro puff hairstyle.
The whole family was wearing their natural hair! I had hoped some of
the moms who had already started perming their young daughters hair
would take notice and at least ask some questions, but I don't think
that happened.
Anyway, as y'all can tell, this made my weekend!
Toni
SL 5 weeks
Surprisingly, my hair wasn't an issue at the family reunion. I didn't get
any funny looks or anything like that.
I got compliments from 3 people -- one of them is a cosmetologist who deals
the creamy crack. She loved my hair and said she can't wait to see it at
the next reunion in 2003 because she said it'll be down to my shoulders by
then.
Another woman was standing behind me in line at the barbecue, and she said
"That's not a wig, is it? I've been looking at your hair and thought it
was a wig. That is very pretty!" Then she went on to ask me what it is, and
I explained. She said she might have to look into it, so I gave her the

The third compliment came on Saturday night when everyone, including me,
was all boozed up. A woman told me she loves my hair and asked what it
is. I told her it was locks. She said she's never seen locks look like
that. So I explained Sisterlocks. After that, whenever she saw me, she'd
say "Wear dem Sistercurls, Sandra!" LOL!
I must say I was looking rather clever Saturday night. I wrapped a scarf
around it and tied the bow on the side of my head. I got lots of
compliments on that style... especially when I started doing a lot of
sweating, took off the scarf, and shook my hair out a bit. No mirror
required. :-) It just fell into a cute style and I kept on dancing. My
aunts really loved that!
Unfortunately I didn't take any pictures, but my cousin said she'd send me
some.

I'm interested in knowing more about that foil set, too. I hope you'll

you resize that one? I'd like to see it. Your Sisterlocks have really
grown and filled out nicely. They're beautiful.

Hello, everyone... sorry I've been gone from the group for awhile.
To make a looooonnnnggg story short... had some hairy cases to deal
with, along with the National Bar Assn convention here in Dallas.
But, that's all over now and I'm not trying to catch up on all the
messages to this group and all my eMail.
I'd like to say welcome to all the new members to the group! I
haven't read all the messages yet, but I know there are many of you
new to Sisterlocks! I know you are loving your hair, too. I have
viewed some of the new pics in the folders, and you are all looking
good.
And, to Terri... your short SL's really look great!
I'll have more to say later after I get up to speed with all the
messages. I may not post as much as I used to for awhile... only
until I get up to speed, though. :-)

Kim,
Thank you very much for clarifying what Sheila said. Your explanation helped
me to understand that the loc gets larger (more scalp?) rather than smaller
with the growth of a child's head. Therefore the loc sizing should be on the
smaller side. Think I've got it now.
I appreciate the tip on considering the time factor for getting the SL for
children.
How long has your daughter been wearing her SL's now? Are you pleased with
how they are coming along? How often do you find yourself retightening for
her?
When does the head stop growing? Do you know? Anyone?
Again, thank you. You are always so helpful.

Hi,
I asked the same question of my locktician; because my hair is so
short to begin with, she advised me NOT to trim. I noticed it will be
straight on those texturized ends, but using the "Starter Shampoo" my
hair is napping-up more. Perhaps it depends on the length of your
hair. Have you asked your locktician?
Teri
S/L 6 days
Should I have my hair or my ends trimmed before I get my Sisterlocks
put in? A good portion of my hair is the texture that will leave
curly q's on the end.
hi,
Thanks for all the support. I looked in the files, as I was advised to do and
I made an appointment with Carol in Chicago. She was great.
She looked at my locks and put a "reverse 4" which she said would prevent the
locks from coming undone again.
She reviewed the correct washing technique, which I had NOT used.
She went over some styling techniques and thankfully showed me the right
curlers to use: smooth perm rods. I had purchased these "fuzzy" curlers that
grip on the to hair. Luckily, Carol explained that they were NOT a good idea
for me to use, they might make myhair really fuzzy. So, back they go to
Sally's.
And she graciously sold me a startup kit, so now I have all the stuff that
you guys are talking about to use when I wash my hair again, which will be
Tuesday, August 14th, right before my surgery.
Hopefully, by the time I can shower again in a couple of weeks, my hair will
be further along.

You know, that "rumor" is true. Amazon did a workshop in New York at JFK
Airport and I know a braider that attended. She showed me how to do a
"lock" on relaxed hair or just as a temporary styling option. When she did
the example, on a head she was braiding, she back combed and started the
sisterlock technique. However, she didn't have a tool and I don't know
what's done once you're close to the scalp, and it was never referred to as
"sisterlock".
She showed this to me months before I decided to lock, did my research and
chose to be Sisterlocked, and took the OFFICIAL Sisterlocks Training!

Hi Anya!
Yeah, it is good. I get some good tips that I can apply to my own
hair although I don't have SLs.
My eldest daughter (8 1/2) has had her locks for about 2 months now.
She asked for them. She likes mine and she HATES to get her hair
combed. She used to cry when she was younger (which is why I put the
stupid relaxer in her hair at age 5...but that's another story) But
as she got older, she didn't cry, but she dreaded it. I always tried
to be as gentle as I could; using the W I D E S T of wide-toothed
combs, spritz with water and conditioner in it; but she still
sometimes flintched when I would do her hair.
So, when she discovered that her locks can still be put into
ponytails and such, she was GAME! :-)
My youngest (the 2 1/2 year old) has had hers for almost a month.
Locking her hair was MY decision and I fought with it. But I just
said to myself, "as long as they're small enough for her to have
lot's of versatility as she get's older" I told myself that if
anyone questioned me and said I should let her make the decision, I
would just look at the holes in their daughter's ears or the relaxer
in their hair and just say..."Did you get HER permission to do
THAT?" But, part of me still thinks that I should wait until she's a
little older, but we'll see what happens.
My son just got his 2 weeks ago. (He's 10, BTW) At first, he wanted
nothing to do with locks, but then he came to me and said he was
ready. Deep down inside, I think he just feels left out (*LOL*) but
it will be nothing for him to cut his hair back down, ya know what I
mean?
Cherie
Sorry group...I forgot to note the subject
Hello Cherie,
So glad we will both benefit from the responses from the group.
It was so easy for me to make my own decision to SL, but I hesitate with my
daughter because of her age. I know she will love them because she loves her
twist, my SL's and all other natural styles. We just may begin her journey
in September.
How long have your daughters been wearing their loc's? At what age did you
start them? How are they (loc's) progressing? Did they make their own
decision or did you make the choice for them?
Thanks
Anya

Hello everyone,
I am ready to loc my daughters hair (age 7), but want to make sure I have
covered all the angles for her first.
At the homecoming event Sheila Everett briefly mentioned in the morning
Styling & Maintenance class that she loc'd her nieces hair initially, but did
not consider that the circumference of the head changes when the child grows.
She then told us to consider this when loc'ing the hair of children. I
think she said that the loc's can get too small as the child's head
grows...anyway, I intended to talk with her further, but got to talkin with
folks and forgot.
Can any of the consultants (and others w/info) shed light on this for me?
What specifically does a consultant need to do to when babyloc'ing kids to
ensure they grow into their loc's without any problems?
For those who have children with locs, are there any other areas of
consideration that maybe I need to give attention? Anything you wish that
you had known or considered before loc'ing your children's hair? What would
you have done differently and why?
Thank you for all insights.

I don't know if she wears Sisterlocks but I doubt it. I have seen

about Sisterlocks so I don't remember. I do remember the color of
her hair though. It is pretty. I have been to Amazon in the past to
get my hair braided but I don't recall her being present.
It is probably true that a lot of braiders started at Amazon. I know
of a few. I have also heard that they offer something similiar to
Sisterlocks and they learned by watching someone put in Sisterlocks.
That is the rumor, I don't know if it is true. I am thinking that
those Stitch locs are their version of Sisterlocks.

Thanks for the Welcome everyone.
Excuse me if this message posts twice, but I seem to have lost my
first draft.
Leighann, I am originally from NY but live in Boston now. My mom
doesn't live too far from Marcia. I considered Khumura, but she (I
read) specializes in microlocks (too small for me). I'm so glad you
are loving your locks--and I'm dancing the Sisterlocks dance with ya!
So far, Marcia has only trimmed about 1/8 to 1/4 inch of loose ends.
In about 4 months she thinks I should be able to cut off the permed
hair. Now I know why many are impatient about cutting off the permed
stuff...my permed hair doesn't have the same texture, thickness or
life!
We don't have any consultants here in Boston yet (although the home
office said that a long-time consultant/trainer would be moving out
here the end of the year). I'm even considering training to become
one next year some time.
Sisterlocks are so liberating and really allow women with african-
textured hair to highlight our natural hair and authentic beauty. I
think Joanne Cornwell is the Madam CJ Walker of the new milleneum,
and I can't thank her enough for Sisterlocks and liberating me from
the "creamy crack" (i love that term!).
Here's to a Sisterlocks revolution.

Sisterlocked 3 days
Missy,
I'm sorry you broke your arm. I hope it heals soon. As for grooming.
Typically, grooming isn't necessary the first year of Sisterlocks.
You should give the locks a chance to settle and mat. In the beginning,
sisterlocks are skinny like braids, then they expand, then they go
through the fuzzy stage, then the curly-q's turn into small buds,
then the locks become skinny again, but not as skinny as in the
beginning. Then the stray hairs begin to wind themselves around the
locks. Finally, after about 10-12 months, they're ready to be groomed.
This is when the consultant trims the stray hairs along each lock. This
is a long and tedious process. It takes longer than a retightening
because the consultant has to be careful not to cut the lock. In a
retightening, the process can be monotonus but in a grooming, one has
to be extra careful. A grooming is usually not done at the same time
as a retightening because of the time. Many consultants charge more for
a grooming than a retightening. After the first year, it's good to have
them groomed twice a year.
So, Missy. Don't worry. You still have some time to go. The time will
fly.

Hi Ebonie,
Thaks for the compliments
Because of the length of my hair (1.5-2.0 inches), my locktician
wants to see me in about 2 weeks to make any neccessary tightenings
or adjustments. They are fragile & need a little extra care. I also
had about 1/4" texturizer on the ends so that part d/n lock: I must
be vigilant in monitoring any slippage or unraveling. 3 days old,
I'm proud to say no problems at all.
I also plan to have my locktician observe the way I wash my hair so I
can make sure I am properly caring for them.
I look at these steps as temporary but vital to the success of my
S/L. I paid 400 bucks for this hairstyle and I plan to make the BEST
of it. I hope I answered your questions but if you have any other
questions, please let me know.
