Thanks for the info Sandy. I've been using the tea water and having a lot
of trouble with this stubborn hair in the front of my head. Gonna either go
back to the starter or try the salon formula.

Re: [LockItUp] Starter Shampoo

2008-07-31 07:27:44

I know Sandy mentioned that the Starter shampoo should be used w/ out
diluting it, but I noticed that when I got the shampoo from the consultant
that I started going to last month, it seemed stronger, so I have been adding
water to it. I mean, it smells like it has a lot of alcohol in it. Has any
one else noticed this or am I the only one who thinks it's better diluted?

Hey all,
I don't know if you all remember, but about a month ago I ordered the
Indigo Hair Rinse from CD, but instead they sent the General Hair rinse.
Then, when I sent it back, they claimed they hadn't received it. Well, this
past week, I was home & I got a Fed Ex package & I am thinking, "I didn't
order anything, what's this?" Well, it was the correct package. I tried the
rinse on Fri., after washing my hair & it turned out great! I wanted to try
something different from using the ACV & this is supposed to be good for dry
scalp, so I will see how it works. I am just glad that this mixup was
resolved:)

Separating Locks

2008-07-31 00:52:00

I noticed something new the last 2 times I shampooed my hair.
When I separate my locks while still wet, I didn't find any that needed
separating. But after it dries, as I'm playing in my hair as usual, I find
locks that need separating.
Is this just because it's hard to feel it when it's wet?
Btw, I'm liking this salon formula shampoo even more now that my hair has
dried.

Starter Shampoo

2008-07-30 13:12:02

The starter shampoo is not in a spray bottle. It's in a little bottle that
you squeeze. Use it straight... don't dilute it. But you don't need a lot
of it. Be prepared not to see a lot of suds.
The salon and tea water formulas come in a spray bottle. Then when you use
them up, you can buy the concentrates and make your own dilution. You can
fill the spray bottle 4 times with one bottle of concentrate.

Tell me about it! Rose eo is EXPENSIVE, too! Nice consultant you've got
there! I plan to use an eo spritz on my customers -- if and when I go that
route. I think it's a very nice touch.
A little spritz of water and a finger-combing would have done the trick.
That's what I do when mine comes out too curly.
It sounds like you'll probably lock quickly.

2008-07-29 17:20:34

Hey ladies!
Yesterday was a fabulous day for me. I was so calm when I woke up on
Saturday morning, because I knew I was starting a new journey and I
was excited, but rather mellow. I tend to not get excited until
things are happening.
I arrived at my appointment on time and my consultant began. It was
a relaxing time for me and I read a book, knitted on my scarf, and we
watched television and munched on snacks. In between starting a new
section, my consultant, Donna Mejia, rolled my hair on perm rods with
a spritz of water and rose eo, very nice scent, btw. When she
finished, my hair was a bit too curly for my liking, so I went to
Sally's and bought some perm rods a little bigger in size and rolled
my hair last night and it looks great.
My consultant was a bit shocked at the thickness of my head. She
sectioned the front into two sections. After she completed the front
of my head, she moved to the back. She told me that Dr. Cornwell
recommends that you section the back into 3 sections. She had to
divide mine into 4, becasue as my consultant delicately put it, I
have a large cranium with a lot of hair to go with it. So I said,
you mean, I have a big ol' head with a lotta hair? She said, well,
yeah!!! That was so funny to me. She was really surprised that my
hair was so thick, but I tried to tell her in the beginning. The
back on my hair took longer than the front section for sure and she
used a pattern 4 on my hair. My hair is pretty much the same texture
all around, the super kinky kind. My consultant did say that my hair
was taking well to the pattern, which is a good thing!
I'm very pleased with my hair. I didn't have the plucked chicken
look that I was a bit apprehensive about. My hair looks very full
and thick and I like my sisterlocks. I like the curly look, so I may
do that for awhile. It was really simple to set them on the perm
rods, didn't take too much time to roll, and easy to finger comb in
the morning. But I'll probably attempt to freestyle after my first
washing some time to come this week.
I did take lots of pictures and will get them developed soon. I
didn't count the number of sisterlocks, but I will sometime soon,
because I do have a lot of them. My husband (sson to be ex) said, it
took all day to do that? but then he looked at the size of them and
understood why it took so long. My ex hubby even likes them and he
didn't initially when he saw the pictures.
Today is a rather emotional day for me as I'm moving out of our
apartment and into my cousin's place for awhile.
Thanks to everyone for all their support. Now I'm off to a party to
show off my hair!
Talk to you later,
Wanda (SL'd one day and lovin' every minute of it!!)

353 of them!

2008-07-28 21:32:02

Greetings to all!
Please allow me to formally introduce myself. My name is Teri Munger, a
former lurker, now brand new member to the SISTERLOCK family. Although not
sure when to start the first day of my locking life, the first Sisterlock was
laid onto my scalp, on a beautiful sunny morning Friday 3 August 0930 AM.
The last Sisterlock (number 353) was laid on Saturday evening, 4 August 2020
PM. Yes, there were breaks in the process (but Siva, if my calculations are
correct not counting the breaks), the process took 24 hours--14 on Friday, 10
on Saturday!
QUESTION: When do I start my day one?
Locktician Siva Martin stepped-up to the challenge of locking my 1.5 - 2.0
inch hair and proved (as I knew she would) VERY successful. Doubtful at
first, she surprised herself that she did it. She meticulously transformed
every strand she could gather into beautiful "Pattern 4" Sisterlocks. (Hope I
described it right) Much love goes to her, her daughters Calista & Nahima,
and sister client Yolanda Lee, for their love, encouragement, &
maintenance/styling tips during this excitingly fragile, vulnerable time.
Sandy Fields:
I even came up with a SISTERLOCKS DANCE!!!!!! I am an ecstatic, Sisterlock
wearing woman, REBORN!!!!!
Thank you all for your sharing & love, all over the world. Keep it coming.
Pictures coming soon, to a desktop/laptop near you!
Much love & HIS blessings,
Teri, finally Sisterlocked in Spokane, less than 24 hours old!

I use the salon formula also & I love it. I have not tried the tea

formula works excellent on my hair. I still switch over to Dr. Bonners
shampoo from time to time but the SL's salon formula is the best to
me.

I found a new hair oil recipe that I really like. It comes from the book

very similar to Carol's Daughter's Khoret Ahmen Oil and has most of the
same ingredients. I've used it a couple of times now, and I really like it.

Salon Formula Shampoo

2008-07-27 23:53:13

Today I tried the Sisterlocks Salon Formula shampoo for the first time. I
really like this one. It cleans very well and has good lather. I always
wondered about the difference between the tea water formula and the salon
formula. JoAnne explained the difference to me in April, and then I forgot
it. Thankfully it's written up in the new book.
FYI, the tea water shampoo is formulated for good hair... that tight, kinky
stuff. The salon formula is for hair that has a looser curl pattern, or
wavy. Since the hair on top of my head is on the wavy side, I've decided
to use this one. Maybe it'll help speed the locking process in that
area. The kinky hair in the back of my head seems to do just fine no
matter what I use on it. 5 days after a retightening it already starts to
fluff up.
So anyway... just thought you'd like to know that I've used both formulas
now, and they both get a thumbs up from me.
I gotta say that Dr. Bronners is still my overall favorite for a shampoo,
but I'm going to use this salon formula for awhile and see if it makes a
difference in my straight-hair area.

What I love about my Sisterlocks

2008-07-27 01:01:10

Ladies,
I want to tell you what I love the MOST about my Sisterlocks. Of
course, there is a loooonnng list of things to love, but one thing
stands out in my mind and it pertains to going out on the town.
Back in the day when I was permed (only one short year ago), if my
hubby wanted to take me out to eat or somewhere, the first thing I
thought about was my hair. "Ohhh Lord, what am I going to do with my
head?" If it needed washing, was I going to have time to dry it. It
took me FOREVER to hot curl it and then I still wasn't usually
satisfied with the way it looked. THEN, once we left the house, was
the wind going to blow my style away, was it going to be too humid
and my curls would fall, and please don't let it rain!!!
Nowadays, as long as I've got something cute to wear, I'm good to go!
And I'm ALWAYS happy about the way my hair looks. Last night I took
my girls to swim lessons at from 6:00 to 6:45, splashed around in the
pool with them, got home at 7:00, jumped in the shower, jumped out,
and was ready to leave the house at 7:30 (and this was only because I
had to iron a blouse.)
What a difference! This is after only ONE MONTH with my
Sisterlocks! No more hair drama. It can't get any better than this!
I guess you can tell I LOVE my Sisterlocks!

Young Folks at the Airport

2008-07-26 14:17:26

It was one of those "get out of the bed, shower, and shake"
mornings. Before boarding the plane from STL to DIA I stopped
by the TCBY for a small cup and 2 of the teens working inquired
about my locs. Both had a short perm style which didn't look
bad because there were no see-through ends.
They asked me if I had someone do it for me and I told them
yes -- a couple of years ago. They were then very
complimentary. They really liked them over some of the other
locs they'd seen and thought they were just done because they
were so "tidy".
The compliment felt good and I was glad for them to see
another loc alternative. It bothered me that they held other
locs so negatively. That and my need to get on the plane kept
me from telling them more about Sisterlocks.
I must look on Sandy's unofficial list before travelling so
that I can get some real names of people who do Sisterlocks.
Kids like this will want to have a local name and number to
call. I plan to give the standard disclaimer and the home
office number before offering up a name.

Re: Swimming Caps

2008-07-24 20:07:32

No we didn't wear swim caps. I've never liked them. They're too tight.
Besides, I have too much hair. I have heard others say that they wear
swim caps over their sisterlocks, but I don't and I didn't bother with
my daughter. Her hair locked from day one. She's never had slippage and
I've never had to braid/band her hair before washing. I wasn't worried
about her hair at all. I was concerned about my hair because I had lots
of slippage in the early days. After swimming and rinsing, I'd check
for slippage. There wasn't any, so I stopped worrying about it. Next
time, though, I think I'll put them in a ponytail first, but that's
ist.

Re: first retightening

2008-07-24 01:46:18

Toni,
Slippage is normal. 4 weeks is appropriate and the consultant
should complete the retightening and fix other issues.
To answer your question: I got my first retightening after 2
weeks. She spent about 15 minutes on my hair and I had
a lot of slippage and unravelling. She scheduled my
appointment at the same time that she had a a dinner
engagement -- her dinner guests showed up while she was working
on my hair. I don't know why she not cancel the appointment if
she had a conflict. She was new and not certified at that time.
After all of that I'm still happy I have SL -- the technique
is very good. I also found some good consultants (in CA and
my sister) and learned to take care of my own hair.

Re: [LockItUp] first retightening

I think (not certain about this, though) you're supposed to go for your
follow-up visit in about 3 weeks, or after a couple of shampoos. During
this visit, the consultant would check your hair to see how it's coming
along, make sure you're shampooing correctly, and do any necessary
retightening. After that, it's every 6 to 8 weeks.
Go NOW!

did not have time for curling so I am freestyling.
I also posted a couple of picture of my mother's hair. She is
sisterlocked at 70 years old! Her hair is white very fine and
thin. Those are actually the large locks but her hair is so fine
that they appear to be very tiny. She has female pattern baldness so
out of respect I did not post the crown area. That runs in my family
on both sides so I am really trying to avoid that problem. She will
wear hats and let the sides hang during the summer. When it gets
cold she will probably have me put a weave over it which is how she
usually wears it. I am hoping that the locks will thicken in time
and we could finger comb over the alopecia and it won't be so
noticeable. Her hair is all natural. I don't know what caused the
hair loss besides heredity.

Hi Sandy and all of you in the Lock It Up Group. It's good to be back.
I've been trying to catch up on all the posts. Happy B-lated
Sisterlocks Birthday, Sandy. I was about to ask for pictures, but I'll
wait. Once I finish reading all these posts, I'll probably see that
you'be already announced that you've posted them. Phoenix was HOT! The
high was 111 degrees. We had a good time, though. The Grand Canyon is
awesome. Wow! And Sedona is beautiful. We played night tennis and golf,
and went swimming everyday. There were 11 of us in the group. My
daughter and I were the only two with locks. We just got out of the
pool, showered and rinsed our hair and let it air dry. We were good to
go. Everyone else had to do other things to their hair each time they
left the pool. By the end of the week, three of my nieces told me they
wanted Sisterlocks.

Re: Washing Our Hair - Question for Consultants (Teri)

2008-07-17 22:48:16

Hi Teri,
Of course, your consultant will be the best person to ask about
the care of your baby locks because she will be the one who has
analyzed your hair, determined its curl pattern(s), cuticle texture,
and the locking pattern(s) she will use.
In my consultants training class, JoAnne Cornwell, herself,
recommended that people with new Sisterlocks that are too short to
braid and band could wear a stocking cap when washing their hair.
This will cut down on manipulating them too much. Also, BE SURE to
only use the Sisterlocks Starter Shampoo until your consultant
advises you otherwise. This is important. The Starter Shampoo
roughens the cuticle and enhances locking. This shampoo doesn't suds
up much, so there is a tendency to use too much unnecessarily. Buy a
spray bottle to use to apply the shampoo. It goes on evenly and helps
to avoid that manipulation. Avoid scrubbing your scalp even though it
feels good. Use moderate water pressure to rinse. Your consultant
will give you detailed info on how to do this.
As far as cutting your locks--especially baby locks---is
concerned, DON'T DO IT no matter how tempted you are. Your hair locks
at the tip first and then works its way to the base. If you
accidently cut into that tip while trying to clip the last of that
texturizer, your hair will unravel. Like a fool, I did this and
that's exactly what happened to me. The best thing to do would be to
cut it off before you lock, but you may not want to lose that length.
Again, ask your consultant.
I hope this helps you, Teri. Keep us posted. :-)
Cheers,
Martha ~ @-}--

I really like your website. I before I finally got my hair done I
used to vist it daily. All those pictures were really a big help in
finalizing my decision to lock my hair. Your free style is sooo
nice. I can't wait until I get rid of my scraggly ends. They are so
bothersome. I hate rolling my hair up everytime I rinse it out. Oh
well, eventually I'll be just like you <smile

2008-07-17 08:22:22

Sandy, thanks for the advice and all the tips. I went to Everette's in
Detroit and the owner's son is the one who took care of me. I asked most of
the questions you suggested. I think my main thing is that I've gotten used
to the length of my extended braids (I've been braided since January - no
chemicals since Thanksgiving). I've taken down a few braids and I have 2 to
2 1/2 inches of chemical-free growth. Following your journey through your
pictures is a great inspiration.
My only other issue was work (I work in a lawfirm) but after seeing various
pictures of curled locs, I'm sure I'll be fine. I believe it's all the
confidence in which you carry yourself anyway. Hopefully, I'll be making the
transition in the next two weeks or so.
Peace,
Yvette

Yvette's Consultation

2008-07-16 12:30:47

Yvette,
Did you ask all your questions while at the consultation? If not, ask them
when you go in for the test locks. Don't worry about being a pain by
asking all those questions... it's *your* hair and your money!
Find out if she's certified. If not, find out if she's working toward
getting certified.
Find out if she offers the 3-visit package that is recommended by the home
office. You can check our files area or the Sisterlocks website for details.
Find out *exactly* what you're getting for your initial expenditure.
Then find out how much she charges for retightening. Does she charge by
the hour? Does she charge a flat fee?
Ask if she provides the starter kit with the initial locking session.
(She's supposed to). And ask how/where you can get the starter shampoo
when you need more. Does she sell it? Is there someone in your area who
sells it? Or will you need to order it from the home office?
If you live in a dry area and can't go without putting some kind of
moisturizer on your scalp, find out if she sells the SL moisture treatment
or if there's someone in your area who sells it, or if you'll need to order
it from the home office.
These are just some of the questions you should ask... you may think of
others. Write down your questions and take them with you so you won't
forget anythiing.
Then come back here and tell us all about it! :-)

Re: Washing Our Hair - Question for Consultants

2008-07-15 20:43:40

Hotep Sandy,
Although I've taken the consultants training, I really don't have
the experience to answer this question as a consultant, so I'm just
telling you what I do. I wash my hair every week. I'm active because
I work out and take African dance classes, and there have been times
when I've been too busy to work out or take class, but I STILL wash
my locks weekly. I experienced a lot of slippage on top of my head
before my hair locked (plus I stupidly cut through some locks before
they had matured when I was trying to cut perm off and they
unraveled), so at that time my consultant advised me to wash every
two weeks. Now, I always get into the shower and let water run on my
scalp and through my locks after retightening even though I wash them
before the retightening. It doesn't make sense, but it's soothing.
As long as you're fully locked, your lifestyle, how dirty your
hair is, and your personal preferences should determine how often you
wash. That's what I learned in the class. Just remember to separate
your locks at the scalp each time and use Sisterlocks moisture
treatment.
Cheers,
Martha ~ @-}--

Washing Our Hair - Question for Consultants

2008-07-15 08:25:37

So... how often should I be washing my hair.
I've been on a two-week schedule for years, and I've kept it up since I got
Sisterlocks.
However, I want to help my newly-retightened portions along by washing more
often. Plus, I've finally realized that the perm-damaged spot in the top
of my head always starts to itch a little about 5 or 6 days after
shampooing. I've been putting CD's khoret ahmen oil on it when it starts
to itch, but I thought maybe washing it would be more productive.
So... would a weekly shampoo hurt anything?

new SL convert

2008-07-14 15:19:28

Hey everybody,
SL success story.
My sister has beautiful thick long all-natural hair
(my mother never did anything but put herbs in it and
braid it when we were growing up.) Once my sister
decided to start doing her own hair, she ran into the
usual block. It was too much for her to braid every
day and she didn't like the 'fro look. Plus, we're
Muslim, so she needed styling options that fit under
her headscarf.
So, she decided to straighten her hair. Mom and I of
course had conniptions all over the place at the idea.
I've been talking about getting SLs since early this
year. So, I showed her all the group pictures, and
the sisterlocks home site pictures. And, I said to
her "have you ever seen anyone with straightened hair
that looked like this?" Then, one morning she got up
and said "I want Sisterlocks." I was like, yes,
finally.
So, we went to the consultant who's doing mine and my
sister's getting hers the weekend after mine,
Insha'Allah. That will be so cool. I can't wait to
see us.
So thanks to all y'all beautiful natural heads that
helped to convince her. We have saved another head
from the evils of the mainstream black hair care
industry. :)
Had to share, plus this ends a couple of months of
lurking,
Judy

Re: Brand new sisterlocks (Sandy)

2008-07-12 23:51:48

Sandy,
You are absolutely right. Extension hair would add unnecessary
bulk. However, I have a friend who has small (mature) sisterlocks
and she never wears them down. She ALWAYS wears a ponytail and when
I asked her to wear her hair down one day she refused, explaining
that she looks like a lioness because her hair is so thick. Go
figure. So I assumed (perhaps incorrectly) that small sisterlocks
(like small baids) would be too much for my hair. As for the number
400 - my consultant told me that I would have over 400 locks if she
did them small. She had small locks herself that were BEAUTIFUL and
it was tempting..... but I definitely wanted more of a traditional
loc look. I counted my locs and I have 262. That's still a lot of
locs - lol.
By the way, my sisterlocks are looking better each day. I am finding
it impossible to keep my hands out of my hair.....

Brand new sisterlocks (Wanda)

2008-07-12 04:49:31

Val, your locks are beautiful as they are, but I just wanted to tell you
(moreso to tell others that are thinking about it) that not everyone ends
up with 400 locks. The number of locks depends on the size of your head
and the texture of your hair. So even if you did get the medium-sized
locks, as opposed to the large, your hair wouldn't end up any thicker than
they are gonna be now. Hmmm... how do I explain this? You would have more
locks if you got the smaller ones, but your overall hair wouldn't be
any thicker/heaver/bulkier than it will be with the larger locks. You
wouldn't end up with a lion's mane of hair. :-) Your hair is gonna be as
thick as it's gonna be, no matter which size locks you get.
So... do you know how many you have? I counted mine just out of
curiousity. :-)
Aha.. now I see where you're coming from. Micro braids are hair that was
added to your hair. Maybe the braider used too much or made them too
thick. But Sisterlocks is working with your own hair... there's no way you
could end up with more hair than your face and body can support, because
it's *your* hair and it isn't going to be any thicker or thinner than it's
supposed to be -- no matter which size locks you get.
OK. I'm with you here. And that's just how they will look... like
traditional locks, but prettier because of the lacy/feminine look of
Sisterlocks. :-) They will be beautiful. And I'm looking forward to
following your progress. Please please please keep us updated with pictures.
Yep! After looking at your pictures, I'm excited all over again. I'm
really happy for you and am looking forward to following your journey.
I'm glad I didn't go with traditional locks, because like you I don't want
to twist my hair either. I'm afraid I'll over-twist and cause
breakage. There's no worry of that with the Sisterlocks method.

Re: [LockItUp] Waiting to be Sisterlocked, a bit scared of reactions

2008-07-12 01:24:16

Wanda, I did the same thing. I told everyone at home and at work that I
was getting Sisterlocks. I even took JoAnne's book with me and let folks
look through it and see what I was talking about. That way they'd be
prepared for my "plucked chicken" look. And I *really* had a lot of scalp
showing. My co-workers and friends followed my journey from the beginning
and they all like the outcome.
Be sure and let them know that what you get the first day is *not* what
your hair will look like when it matures. They shouldn't make their
decision based on your brand new Sisterlocks.
You will be! Just wait til you all get caught out in the rain one day and
they're running for cover while you're enjoying nature's blessing. :-)
You will be just fine. Not everyone looks like that at first; and even if
you do... like you said, it's only for a short time.
Good for you! Breakups are always hard, and it's nice that you have
something new to focus on and look forward to.

Re: Brand new sisterlocks (Wanda)

2008-07-11 12:04:21

Hi Wanda,
I chose "large" sisterlocks for 2 reasons. One, my hair is way too
thick (imo) for 400 locks. I would look like a lioness and (although
flattered by the thought)I don't want that look. The first few times
I wore micro braids, I looked crazy! It was way too much hair for my
face and I always wore my braids in a ponytail. When I started
getting larger sized braids, the look suited my face so much more and
I could actually wear them hanging. Secondly, I love the look of
traditional locs and wanted my sisterlocks to resemble "small"
traditionals. I would have been a great candidate for salon or
cultivated locs but I chose the sisterlocks technique because 1) I
didn't want to twist to maintain them 2) I didn't want to go through
the really rough "unkempt looking" stage 3) I like the uniformity,
softness and smallness of sisterlocks. Even with "large"
sisterlocks, they will be very small by "traditional locs" standards.

Waiting to be Sisterlocked, a bit scared of reactions

2008-07-11 07:34:45

Hi everyone,
Next Saturday I will be sisterlocked!!! I'm so excited, I'm beside
myself. I told a few ladies at work and they are all waiting for me
to come back with sisterlocks. Two ladies are waiting to see what my
hair looks like to determine if they will get them too, I was so
surprised to hear this from two perm heads, but it was good to hear.
I hope I am a good representative to them of the beauty and ease of
care with Sisterlocks.
I was starting to get anxious and also concerned about the plucked
chicken look, but had another incident happen to me this week that
convinced me to get over it. A friend was in town from New York and
she two-strand twisted my hair. Because I have about 2 inches of new
growth and 7-8 inches of relaxed ends, the new growth of twists
looked very puffy and nice and the relaxed ends straggly. If I could
wear my hair out like that for a week and not care about my hair, I
can go 3 or 4 weeks with the plucked chicken look, if I even have
it. So I think I will be okay
Next weekend, I will also be moving out of the residence my husband
and I shared. As you may recall, I stated my hubby and I are going
through a divorce. I think next weekend will be a healing and a
rebirth for me in many ways and I am looking forward to the next
phase in my life.
I've also decided that Denver, Colorado is not where I want to spend
the rest of my life. I have a 3 month plan to move to Atlanta, GA,
where my sister lives and is close to my hometown of Monroe,
Louisiana. So hopefully there will be some SL consultants in
Atlanta. If anyone knows someone, please let me know.
talk to you all later,
Wanda

Re: [LockItUp] Essence debunks 8 hair myths!

2008-07-10 00:34:46

Yes. I read this article when the magazine first came out. Now... this is
only my opinion, but I don't think you can have healthy hair if it is
relaxed. It can *look* healthy, but it can't *be* healthy.
After reading what relaxers actually do to the hair ("Let's Talk Hair"), I
just don't see how it can then be called healthy. Relaxers damage the
hair. They have to damage the hair in order to straighten it. And the
last time I checked, hair can't be damaged and healthy both at the same time.
Again... just my opinion. I realize that many people feel that relaxed
hair *can* be healthy if it's well cared for. I just don't happen to
agree. IMO it can be healthy-looking but not truly healthy.
More thoughts?

Essence debunks 8 hair myths!

2008-07-09 19:20:38

(Just as I started to write this, an AT&T commercial came on TV: As a
young black woman races to get out of the rain, D.L. Hughley makes a
comment along the lines of...when a woman gets her hair done, water
is like kryptonite.)
I bought the August issue of Essence primarily to read the article on
8 hair myths. Anyone read this yet?
1. Oiling your scalp is an absolute necessity.
2. Your hair will grow if your stylist has 'growing hands.'
3. If you want your hair to grow long, don't cut it.
4. With locks or braids, you don't have to wash your hair every week.
5. You can never overcondition your hair.
6. You should choose your relaxer strength based on the style you
want.
7. Chemical agents damage hair.
8. Natural hair doesn't need any maintenance.
I thought the writer did a good job refuting most of these myths,
although the 2 items regarding natural hair were pretty much the same
issue. But #7....she says that it is possible to have healthy
relaxed hair if you use the products correctly and have a good hair
care program. That's a big if!!
Any thoughts on this?

My Locktician d/n think they will hold up but I wish to prove her

next weekend!!!! I'm besides myself!
I had braids w/extentions put in last May into a BOB(chin length) but
cut them down to my natural hair length (about 1.5-2.0 inches)it's a
cool look, I fel comfortable & folks think it looks cute! The Test
Locks blend right in! No "scratched chicken" look here. I know when
the braids come out and S/Ls go in it will look different. But it's
only TEMPORARY. At least folks & myself will be used to the shorter
look. Crafty, huh?

Hi Deb,
Yeah, I'm wondering why he said, "NO WAY". I mean, he couldn't just
shampoo and set you on rollers/rods? Hmmm... OH...I see what your
daughter was saying now. He's doing your hair, then clients see your
hair and begin to question "what is that you have there?"; then, he
starts losing business 'cause the clients decide they want DEB to
give THEM some Sisterlocks! I gotcha now! ;-)
But when you say he turned around in the same breath and asked you to
do HIS hair (and I hope this isn't a stupid question) but do you mean
he wants BROTHERLOCKS?!? If so, this IS awesome!
So, was he serious? Are you gonna hook him up?
Cherie

A funny thing happened...

2008-07-07 07:19:39

Last week I wanted some else to style my hair so I went to a local
beauty salon and had a consultation for a wash and set. My
Sisterlocks are a 29 mnths old. The stylist took one look at my head
and said NO WAY!
In the next breath he asked me to do his hair!
My daughter suggested in no way did he want a natural hair sister
sitting amongst his permie haired clients. Bad for business.
Has anyone had a similar experience.
Deb

Re: [LockItUp] A funny thing happened...

Why? Was he afraid he'd do something wrong? Or was it what your daughter
suggested?
Not me. I haven't been to a salon in years.

I cut my locks! Yeah! Yeah!

2008-07-06 16:51:14

One of my friend's cut my locks last night. The last cut I had was
when I cut the relaxed ends off. And I've been looking very mop-like
ever since. I've always disliked the "growing out" stage after you've
cut your hair short. It has a layered look that I despise. Remember,
my fave hairstyle is the bob! I went month after agonizing month of
hating the way my hair looked and wearing headbands when I ventured
out in public. (If you're asking why I didn't style it differently,
it's b/c I had the entire front redone and the ends that were left
loose are curly and add volume to the front - so it won't lay down
well!) I decided I had enough length that I could cut it enough to
keep a minimum of 2 inches (as my consultant suggested) in the back.
It's not quite a bob, but it looks a whole lot better! I am extremely
pleased!

I doubt it. It's just sweat. Just wash your hair (following the proper
instructions to the letter) afterwards so the sweat and salt don't build up
in it.
I would guess that a couple of hours in a hat once a week shouldn't hurt
anything.

Cecily,
I started with about 1 1/2 inches of new growth and the plucked chicken
look was really bad, but I just chalk it up to being part of the process.

Well, I had a chance to speak with Lynn (sorry if I'm misspelling your
name), the lone SL Consultant in Seattle, WA. She was a joy to speak with,
and exuded all manner of positive energy!
She mentioned that since my hair is only 1.5 inches long, that I might want
to wait to start my SLs because of the "plucked chicken" look. Did anyone
here start their SLs with 2-3" of hair or shorter? Do you have photos?
Thanks for the information,
Cecily

Yeah! I finally got locked up on Monday and finished
Tuesday afternoon. I don't think I ever want to see
that chair again. It didn't take as long as some of
you (only 15 hours). Its really cute all curled up
and with a couple of bobby pins off my face. I'll try
to get a few pictures up soon.

Hi Vannette,
I highly recommend my Sisterlocks consultant, Greg Day. He can be
reached at 512-280-3731. He's in Austin. It will be a bit of a
drive for your sister since he's on the south side, possibly an hour
and a half, but it will be worth it.

Sisterlocks and a really bad hat

2008-07-03 20:47:14

Hey Everyone!
My names Cha, Ive been lurking for a while and I really wanted to
wait until I had my sisterlocks (august) to join the conversation,
but I couldnt wait any longer. I have a few questions that I was
really hoping someone could help me out with.
I have 3 1/2 inches of natural and 3-4 inches of relaxed hair left
(about half/half) and I was interested in the med/larger sized
sisterlocks. Im still a h.s student and Fridays im in a marchingband
that requires a hat and uniform (for about 1-2 hours total time). It
gets really hot and I sweat a bit during the august/september months
do you guys think this will cause the locks to unravel? Has anyone
else encountered something like this? Any suggestions?

My only problem is time. I have a full-time job, I work on websites in the

It is very tedious but I am enjoying it also. It reminds me of when

I am considering getting a regular massage therapist. I really need
it after holding my arms up so long.

Sandy, you should go for it if you think you would enjoy it. I really like
working with my hands and messing around with hair (not mine tho). I
haven't made any money to speak of yet but that's OK. Although it is time
consuming and tedious, I just like to do it!

I have made a batch of that insect repellent to use Saturday (family reunion

about how long will it keep? Thanks

Sisterlocks in TX

2008-07-02 05:51:47

Greeting all,
First of all let me introduce myself. My name is Vannette and I have
been loced for almost two years in September. At the same time I
loced my hair I loced my sisters. While cultivated traditional locs
toatally work for me, they did not work for my sister and after a
year she has cut them off. So I was wondering if anyone here knows
how I may contact sisterlock consultant in TX? She lived in Killeen,
TX which is an hour from Austin. Any help be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Re: [LockItUp] HELP, I cut out my relaxer and now I don't know what to do

2008-07-02 01:43:14

Hey Ebonie & welcome to the group! I think that your decision to cut the
relaxer out of your hair is definitely a step in the right direction. I have
been natural for about 5-6 years now & once I decided to get rid of the perm,
I never looked back. There are soo many options for natural hair, but alot of
times, people aren't aware of them b/c they don't dialogue w/ others. Girl,
we're here for you, so you won't have that problem:
As for hair suggestions, I will tell you what I did. When I decided to get
rid of the perm, AKA "creamy crack", I cut it out gradually & wore braids for
about a year. This made the transition really smooth b/c I didn't have to
worry about trying to style short hair & it gave my roots a chance to get
healthy again...Eventually, I progressed to get natural hair styles,e.g.,
two-strand twists. I don't know where you live, but you should try to find a
natural hairstylist, who's knowledgeable & can offer suggestions on how to
style your hair. Anyway, whether you decided to go w/ Sisterlocks or
traditionals, just keep your hair healthy & perm-free!

lost. I have not the faintest idea what to do with this. I want to
know if youg uys have any suggestions whatsoever, and also, are there
any products that you guys would recommend for hairgrowth. Right now
I am seriously considering dreds or sisterlocks, but I am still
indecisive. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Hi Ebonie,
My best advice would be to run to the nearest library, bookstore or
Sandy's website's link to Amazon.com and get a copy of Tulani
Kinard's book No Lye. She has so much information about caring for
natural hair and lots of information about and pictures of styles for
natural hair of all length. I would obviously encourage you to go
the Sisterlocks route (and they are included in this book) but until
you're ready, this book will be your hair's best friend.

Hotep,
At the chat last night, we discussed, among other things, how
beautiful Dr. Cornwell's Sisterlocks are. For those who are
interested, I uploaded a photo of JoAnne, Devon, and me which was
taken at the Homecoming ten days ago. As you'll see, her locks are
gorgeous. Devon is looking quite phine, too. You can find the photo
in the picture file. It's labeled "Sisterlocks Homecoming." I'm going
to upload it again (thanks to Sandy's help) and put it into a folder
that I will start for my pix as soon as my tempermental printer will
allow it.

HELP, I cut out my relaxer and now I don't know what to do

2008-07-01 03:44:16

Hello everyone. It has been a while since I've posted anything, but I
need the support of you guys right now. Yesterday, I took my
extensions out and to me my hair looked a hot mess, but it had length
to it. My hair was half relaxed and half natural, and the relaxed part
seemed ot be hanging on by a thread, but it had the length to it. A
friend of mine volunteered to do something with my hair and I said
okay. When she saw all of it, she told me that I needed to cut the
relaxed part out, but I was very sceptical. Everyone has been telling
me for some time now thta I need to cut the relaxed part, but I didn't
want to let go of it. Finally yesterday, I let my friend cut it, and
now I am naturally. She put cornrows in the top of my hair so I don't
think she cut that part, but whe will have to. Right now my hair is
about an inch long, and I fell completely lost. I have not the
faintest idea what to do with this. I want to know if youg uys have
any suggestions whatsoever, and also, are there any products that you
guys would recommend for hairgrowth. Right now I am seriously
considering dreds or sisterlocks, but I am still indecisive. Any
suggestions would be appreciated.
Sincerely,
Ebonie
