South Carolina-Family Reunion

From: Martha ReedSubject: [LockItUp] Re: South Carolina-Family Reunion
problem with locks. Our people have been negatively indoctrinated
about our natural selves for so long that it's difficult to deprogram
many of us.
For sure. And I was well prepared for any comment they would throw my way.
fortunately i didn't really receive any! :-)
You certanly are lucky. My mother and I have other "issues" so I am sure my
hair is more a symtom of something that goes much deeper.
Homecoming,
Thanks
Actually, I've kept them in the loop the whole step of the way. I think they
like the format but they are a bit shakey on the content :-) My mother is a
defender of the perm. I've tried to put her mind at rest. I'm not suggesting
that she stop perming or coloring, merely be aware of what you are putting into
your body and know there are alternatives, but I think it's a bit like being a
vegetarian (I am no longer one but when I was....). Sometimes when I would say I
was one around a non vegetarian they will automatically think that they needed
to defend their choice. Human nature! The thing with my mother is that she has
Vitiligo (it doesn't seem to be genetic, so it's most likely environmental).
There have been studies showing a link to dying/coloring the hair (She has
colored her hair for many years and continues to color now as she has no pigment
in her hair). Who knows, but perming might have been a contributor also.
Yes,SC was very pretty, as my boyfriend commented-"it looks like 1 big golf
course!" and I loved seeing where my mother grew up (unfortunately for the
town-it's right down the road from the place where Susan Smith drowned her kids)
Sorry to be so long winded. thanks for listening.

Re: South Carolina-Family Reunion

Martha-
My parents live in Hawaii. My father saw my hair about a month ago
when he was here for a visit but my mother had not seen it. I didn't
expect for my father to be supportive (it's not in personality). My
mother didn't really comment on it. She looked at the photos from
Homecoming, and commented on Joanne's hair. We had another person
(male) with us on the trip who has traditional locks. My father said
he "hated" his hair and that mine looked alot better because you
couldn't really tell they were locs. I guess that's sort of a
compliment coming from him. I think they consider me rather odd
anyway. The only other person who commented was an uncle, he sort of
grumbled something about...what's that in your hair??? I hadn't seen
him in 20 yrs. It was my first reunion so I didn't know the majority
of the other relatives. No telling what they were thinking. I didn't
get the feeling that anyone was looking at me funny. Of course I
didn't really care! I got several compliments from some of
the "younger" family members (under 70 :-) All in all it was "quite
an experience!!!" Shall I say I'm glad to be home??? :-)

Hi Arlanda,
What Sandy said is correct. The new book that a few of us have
was a special signature edition which was sold at the Homecoming this
year. It will be available in a couple of months. However, it
wouldn't hurt to call the Home Office and ask.

Habari Gani Lex,
Congratulations on your decision to take the consultants
training. Your love for Sisterlocks will make you a dedicated
consultant who will maintain the integrity of the process and endear
you to your clients. I just KNOW that you will be a wonderful
consultant!! I wish you the best of luck!
I can't help you, as I live in California, but I'm sure Sandy
can give you some info. Again, good luck and keep us posted on your
progress.

My understanding is that it will be, but it's not available yet. They had
some printed up early for the Homecoming, and it will be available in
bookstores and through the home office within the next 2 or 3 months.
I *think* that's what was stated in an earlier message. You might want to
check back through the archives and see for sure.

Hi Wanda,
I have looked at my calendar since I posted last night I am going to call and
schedule for the third weekend in August if my consultant is available. I live
in Missouri City, TX which is a suburb of Houston. My consultant live in a
small town near Houston called Baytown. Her place is about 55 mi from my house
but that is no sweat. I drive that far to shop sometimes!

Lexx, I'll look into it for you. I'm sure there's no shuttle service,
though. And there are no big hotels in the area, but probably some
motels. I have to stop by Everette's on business today, so I'll do some
checking for you.

Hi
Does anyone know if the new sisterlocks book is available thru the
home office ordering line. I would really like to get it since I
couldn't afford to go to the homecoming this year. I've read that it
was very informative. I also want to see some recent professional
pictures.

Sisterlock Consultant training

2008-06-28 10:34:30

Hi All - I'm out of lurking mode (again)
I am making a change!!! I am going to Everette's for Sisterlocks
Consultants training.
I moved to Atlanta from Dallas in January and have been unable to
find employment. I've been in Human Resource for 5 years and still
get that over or under qualified drama. My last position was a HR
Manager over 1000 employees with my Sisterlocks. I'll stop there
because I could go on (smile). During all of this free time I began
to think about back in the day when people would gather in my
Grandmother's kitchen waiting on me to press and curl, cut and color
and oh yes apply the that creamy stuff. In fact a girlfriend come
down and did her hair and added some OPH. If I can do that, then I
can do this.
I am so scared about this change, my hands are shaking as I write
this email. I've got to do something and maybe this is where the
Lord wants me to go. So, with my last unemployment check in hand and
a credit card with some available cash I am registering for this
class.
This has been a wonderful journey with my Sisterlocks and what better
way to share than to give other women the freedom that I have found.
Can anyone tell me what hotel is close to Everette's and are there
any shuttle services available? I am trying to keep cost down and
not rent a car.

Luvissia,
Congratulations on the consultation. I was so excited yet apprehensive when
I had my consultation, but my consultant put me right at ease. I am getting
my SLs in on August 4th and I can't wait. Don't wait on your appointment,
go ahead and schedule it. Then you will be eagerly anticipating. Where do
you live? Your consultant sounds similar to mine, but not sure if we're in
the same part of the world or not. I'm in Colorado.
Take care,
Wanda
Hi Martha,
I had the exact same reaction to my consultant as you did. I took
one look at her 5 year Sisterlocks and just couldn't wait. Her locks
are absolutely gorgeous. She had her's done by JoAnne. The
consultation went well. I like her as a person, she answered all my
questions and told me a little about how to care for them etc. I
have two different textures of hair so she put in four locks, two
different locking patterns in each texture. I like way these test
locks look already. I didn't set an appointment yet but I will
probably get locked the 3rd weekend in August. I have 6 to 8" of all
natural hair that is pretty dense. She estimated that it will take
about 20 hours to complete my locking session. So, I will definitely
try to get my rest in the days just prior. I am one EXCITED sister
who is soon be to SISTERLOCKED!!! woo hoo for me!!

Hi Luvi,
I'm excited for you!! You will definitely have one terrific head
of locks. I'm sure the third weekend in August won't get here fast
enough for you. My locking session took almost as long as yours will,
but my consultant locked me over two days. Ask yours if that can be
an option for you. Congratulations! You're on your way! Keep us
posted.

Hey all,
For the past 2 days I haven't been getting any messages, what's up
w/ that? So I have been reading the posts online. Luckily, there
wasn't a lot to read, so I am up to date. You know I have w/drawals
when I can't get to you all, LOL...I agree wholeheartedly that SL are
really the best thing since sliced bread. Thurs. night, I decided to
wash my hair, so I braided & banded it while I watched my soap tapes
& just hopped in the shower. The Braiding & Banding doesn't take too
long now & I must admit that whereas before I never shampooed in the
shower, I do it all the time w/ my SL now! I really love it. Then I
blow-dried it somewhat & then just let the rest air dry, still banded
up, till morning. I got a very full, wavy look, that will keep me
from having to set it on rods, whoo hoo! Anyway, so glad that I was
able to view the pictues from Homecoming, although I am sure it was
nothing like being there, & I can't wait till the SL book comes out
so I can get a copy. BTW, congrats on your 1 yr. annieversary Sandy,
must be nice:)

Happy anniversary to you and your gorgeous locks!!! My two year
anniversary will be August 9 (and 10 because I was locked over two

Sisterlocks are wonderful!!!

2008-06-25 21:38:33

Hello fellow Sisterlocks fans!
After viewing Sandy's latest pictures several times last week, I
decided to try to wet set my hair. I have many, many, many unhappy
memories of attempting to do this in my pre-SL days but I thought,
hey, what could it hurt?
So last night I put my damp locks (just water, no styling gel) on 20
Scruncii soft cloth rollers and this morning, voila! Curls, curls,
curls -- shiny, bouncy corkscrew curls that are still going strong
at the end of the day.
I still prefer the free-style look but it's very exciting to know
that I really do have a variety of styling options with Sisterlocks!

They appear to have shown up in Denver, but not taking off very well

2008-06-25 03:04:06

Yes Devon, I have been lurking around again, this site is a habit,
got to have it!(LOL) I've also been very busy trying to get back
into a normal routine again,(DANG) To be perfectly honest I'm still
trying to come down, after being up so high this past weekend. I
can't express how much the Homecoming meant to me! I came home with
a whole new attitude. I thought I loved my locks before, but now I'm
insane about them. I know now that at 6 months, they are only babes
in the woods. Gurls, all of you, WE ARE FIERCE!!! I had no clue, I
am 1 of 4 in this neck of the woods, and the other 3 are in the same
family. We are so fierce, I scared of us myself! I got witnesses,
Devon, Marsha, and Kim, but see these ladies already knew what I'm so
glad I got to see. I'm so proud to be a member of this sorority!!!
I know I've babbled on, but for those of you who know, I know you
understand, and for those of you who don't, well all I can say is
it's going to be the biggest treat, when you see us everywhere you
look. Bye for now Yolanda 6months

Re: Sisterlocks Question

2008-06-22 16:36:30

Cecily,
Consultants cannot become certified until they've completed 3 heads.
I'm very grateful to my first three clients. I was very nervous and did
NOT want to jack up somebody's hair. I was more than extra careful
because of that. If she's looking to become certified, then she'll be
careful on your hair. Go visit her and see what kind of vibe you get.
You could wind up with a fabulous job of Sisterlocks for a fraction of
the cost. Most consultant trainees charge less than a certified
consultant because they know their clients are taking a risk by
choosing them. As for the cost, it depends. Find out how much she
charges for retightenings. If she offers sisterlocks as a package deal,
then the first retightening is already included in the initial cost.
You can determine from the number of hours spent at that retightening
how much your future retightenings will be. Actually, in the beginning,
retightenings may take longer if you have lots of slippage. Once they
settle in and you visit her on a regular basis (every 4-8 weeks,
depending on how fast your hair grows), then the retightening time will
be shorter. Some women choose to learn how to retighten their own hair,
then only visit their consultant a few times a year. If you choose to
do this, then the cost won't be as much, as well. Please note that you
can only take the retightening class after your locks have settled in
and there's no more major slippage. Hope this information helps. Good
luck.

Hi folks,
I'm new to the list. My name is Cecily and I live in Vancouver, BC Canada.
I cut off 5 + inches of relaxed hair back on June 27, leaving about 1.5" of
new growth.
I just found out that there is a Sisterlocks consultant in Seattle, WA.
However, the home office informed me that the sister who does them only just
got her certification a couple of weeks ago and she isn't that experienced.
Would you trust a newbie consultant to start your Sisterlocks? Also, how
much can I expect to spend until the locks have actually rooted?
Thanks for answering my questions!

Off Topic: Recipe for a Black Man

2008-06-19 23:05:23

I thought this was interesting and decided to pas it along.
The recipe is for a black man but I think a good man of any race
would fit the bill. IMO.
Disclaimer: For Entertainment purposes only. Take it for what it's
worth.
I'm making a black man cake cause I'm hungry as hell.
And the sweet tooth I have, only a brother can break the spell.
Let me reach into my spice rack to see what I can get.
To make a mix that will stick to my stomach you can bet.
2 cups of intelligence,
1 cup of sugar brown.
Cause he's got to be sweet,
mental, deep and sound.
Cinnamon is always good
to accent the taste.
A few cups of culture
so he's down for his race.
You see I won't bite into anything
That's not conscious of its own.
That's why I stick to chocolate
And leave angel food alone.
I am adding butter
cause he must be smooth.
2 raisins for the dimples
will also be cool.
I must add nuts
so he can reproduce.
Can't leave him hanging
cause I like kids too!
I think I'll add a little salt
to balance him out.
And a dominant profile
to show he has clout.
For a responsible man
I'll throw in some yeast
So he can rise to the occasion
when I'm ready to feast.
I'll add 8 cups of strength
and into the oven to bake.
Turn it to 360 degrees
to balance out his mental state.
Now that its done I'm sorry sistas
I won't share the wealth
That's why I'm sharing the recipe
because I'm eating this black man all by myself.
Pass this along to some of the "Good Black Men" you know and A few
women
that need to read it... Good Black men are indeed all around us. We
pass
them on the streets, in the malls and the halls at work. Most we
can't
see
because we don't know what a good man really looks like.
He usually isn't flashy enough or rich enough to turn our heads. He
might
not wear a suit or push a Lex. He might not have a "body like Arnold
with a
Denzel face."
But, as you mature, you realize it's better to find someone who's got
Your back than someone who turns your head.
A good man doesn't agree wholeheartedly with everything you say. He
doesn't
just tell you what you want to hear and do the opposite. He doesn't
declare
how sensitive, sweet, caring, sincere, yada, yada he is (he won't
have
to
because it shows).
He has his own opinions and you may clash, but he doesn't have to
degrade
you to prove he's right. He even admits at times to being wrong,
especially
if you are willing to do the same.
A good man is not going to meet every item on your checklist. He is
human
with frailties and faults mixed in with all of his wonderful, strong
attributes. He needs your love and respect. He needs to feel that
you
don't
live to "catch" him doing something wrong so you can declare, "Aha! I
knew
you were a dog!!"
A good man doesn't necessarily give you a huge birthday or
Valentine's
gift.
He shows his love in the ways that are comfortable to him.
Don't judge him by TV standards. No one is living that Fairy tale for
real.
You'll miss out on your own fairy tale by buying into the myth that
our
men
are no good. It's just not true.
Black Men, we salute you, and thank you for who you are and all
you've
done

Hi Rae,
Welcome to the group! I'm glad you decided to check it out. Sandy's right,
you need about 1 1/2 inches of new growth. I would check out
http://www.sisterlocks.com for the number to the home office. If you get
voicemail, leave a message requesting names and numbers of consultants. If
you can, get a hold of That hair Thing by Dr. Joanne Cornwell to read more
about the process and meet with a consultant to get an idea of what will
happen when they lock your hair. The consultant will usually put a few test
locks in your hair too for you to get used to.
If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

Re: Retightening Cost

I'm back from Chicago. We had a great time. About the cost of the
retightening, GG just went up on her prices. She is charging $45 an
hour, up from $35. This is okay, if she does it because she is
pretty quick. But when she gets new people and they take 5 hours to
tighten, it can get expensive. I'm glad I took that class when I did.
I can't afford that cost. She says her prices will go up every 6
months. Did GG do your first retightening?

Hotep Everyone,
Yep, here I am. That consultants training has my head swimming.
I didn't get home until late last night because the class ran late,
and I also had to take my daughter to dance rehearsal. I now have
added respect for all of the consultants out there and especially for
JoAnne for perfecting the Sisterlocks techniques. She's got it down
to a science. I had to miss almost three hours of the last day of
training because of a family emergency (everything is fine now). I
was able to return and get the last two hours, though. Celeste said
that I could sit in on the last day of the next training in November,
but I think that I'll just pay the $50.00 and review the entire
course. I'll be able to absorb all of the written information, lock
my mannequin head completely, and practice on myself and any other
guinea pigs I can find. Then I'll feel more confident. My daughter's
got the technique down. I'm proud of her.
Where did you guys get the notion that I posted pictures? My
photos are still in the shop. They'll be ready tomorrow. I may have
to give them to Kim for scanning because my printer/scanner is acting
funny. Also, I guess I'm still in the 20th century because I used a
cheap disposable camera, so I hope they came out OK. I don't have a
digital yet. I'm hoping to get one this summer.
I have more comments to make on some of the threads I've read,
but I've got to go out again to a board meeting for the dance
company. I'll post when I return. I also plan to be at the next chat.
Excuse any typos because I'm on the run.
Blessings,

My First Retightening

2008-06-17 17:14:22

Hi all! Today I had my first retightening, and it only took 2 1/2
hours. My consultant told me that my locks are doing great. She
also told me that my hair has grown a lot, and that by the time I
come back for my second retightening(the end of August), I can
probably stop banding my hair when I shampoo! That was so good to
hear. Since I was so worried and conveyed that to the group, I just
wanted to share my progress with you all.

Wanda,
I'm sitting here thinking about you. You're handling a loss of life,
and an end marriage. You're also facing the birth of wearing your
natural hair. August 4 will be here before you know it. I know you'll
be fine and that you're going through some things now. Feel free to e-
mail privately if you want to vent or "talk".

hair in transition revisited

2008-06-17 15:16:13

Hi Everyone,
It's been awhile since I last wrote For those who sent condolences for my
grandmother's passing, I truly appreciated it. I just felt so at ease among
everyone, that it was easy to tell you all.
I'm anxiously awaiting my sisterlocks. The date has been set for August
4th. Originally I didn't want to fool with my hair, so I had it braided up
and planned on wearing it this way until getting my sisterlocks. I tried to
do twists once, but it didn't turn out well. I think I need to make them
smaller and with that in mind, I'm going to try doing twists again.
My hair is currently braided, but I keep playing in my head to touch the
natural texture and today I think I need to just take the braids out. I
still have 3 weeks to my appointment time, but I feel like I want to play
with my hair. Am I crazy? Plus I'm going through some emotional stress as
my husband and I decided to divorce yesterday! (WHEW!) But I am calmer
today and have been playing with the natural hair that is springing from the
braids and have had the desire for the past week to take it out. Over the
weekend, I actually cut out one of the braids just to touch more of my
natural hair. So I think this is what I will today. My SL consultant
showed me how to twist it, so I think I will try it again.
Thanks for listening and if there are suggestions, please let me know.
Thanks,
Wanda

flaky scalp

2008-06-13 12:20:01

Sandy,
Thanks for the tip on adding lavender oil to the tea tree oil
spritz. I really don't know whether the flakes are from dry or oily
scalp. I think I heard once if the flakes were tiny that it was dry
and if they were bigger then it was oily. If this is the case, mine
is definitely from an oily scalp.
I know that the main reason I have these flakes is my scalp is trying
to heal from years and years of being burned by chemicals (even
though I had my last perm a year ago). The flaky patches are where I
would usually burn the most. Each time the beautician would
say, "Have you been scratching?" Well, heck yeah I've been
scratching! I was burned there and as it tried to heal it would
itch! And then I would let them slap some more chemical on it. Is
that crazy or what!

I have two rolls of film that needs to be developed. However, I do have
some taken with my digital camera that I can share. I uploaded them
into the Homecoming 2001 folder. I had to ask someone to use my digital
camera at the last minute since I was in the fashion show. We didn't
get a chance to set the camera for motion, so all of the fashion show
shots are dark and blurry. Hopefully, Devon and Martha have better
shots. Once my film is developed, I'll share more photos and delete the
bad shots.

There are so many people wanting locs right now so you'll
get lots of business, I think. After you get a sufficient
client base, you'll have retightenings to do.
Are you planning to work from your home or in a shop? There
are clients who prefer both environments. As a client, I
prefer a home atmosphere (depending on the home of course).
If they will come to my home, even better. I don't mind
paying a little more for my comfort.
wisely, I can do it.<<
I think so too, Sandy. It is important to not overload
yourself. You don't want to promise something you can't
fulfill. Fortunately for you and your clients there are
enough consultants in the area to help out.

Re: Can someone explain slippage

2008-06-10 13:07:37

Sandy did a good job discussing slippage. In many cases,
you may have some unraveling without noticing it because
the loc slips down near the tip.
Even after 2 years, I have long hairs that have pulled
out of loc and may or may not ever lock up. Most of
those are hairs with a long curl pattern -- gray hairs
are coming in like that. That isn't slippage.
could either band (no mention of braiding), or wash my hair
with a hair net. <<
I recommend braiding and/or banding. This is the first
I've heard a hairnet recommendation. The point of a hair
net to is to keep the hair within the net. It reminds me a
little of washing with a stocking cap but dirt particles
can be rinsed out better. I'd like to hear from
consultants who are making that recommendation. Maybe
a net with really BIG windows....
Disclaimer: I took the consultant class and worked on a
few heads including my own but I'm not in "the business".

Books on the way

2008-06-10 00:15:46

Sandy and Pat,
I bought your Sisterlocks book. Pat, I'll mail yours tomorrow. Send me
your address through private e-mail. These signature editions have an
additional scrapbook session that won't be in the regular book. The
first page of the scrapbook has JoAnne's signature. Many of us wanted
JoAnne to write a little something extra in our book, however. Sandy,
as JoAnne was writing in mine, I thought about asking her to write to
you, since you said the two of you talked about working on a project
together. Then I got to talking to Jeanette, a teacher at Everette's
Academy, and I forgot to ask JoAnne. Then I saw Sheila and asked her to
give you your book so that we wouldn't have to pay for shipping. Sheila
said yes, so she has your book. Sheila said JoAnne knows Sandy and
asked her to write in your book, so yours has a personal message. Good
looking out from Sheila. I don't know what it says. JoAnne asked if
Sandy ended in ie or y. I said y, Sheila wasn't sure so she told her to
use Sandra. I know you won't have the money until the end of the week.
That's just fine. Feel free to use Paypal if you like. I've got a
client coming over for a retightening, so I'll upload pictures and
include more about the homecoming in a separate post.

Re: [LockItUp] Can someone explain slippage

2008-06-09 17:22:25

The consultants on the list are the best to answer this one... but from
what I've read about it, slippage occurs at the base of the lock... in the
area where the new growth is. Say for instance your hair has grown 1/4
inch since your last retightening, but there's also been 1/4 inch of
slippage. The consultant will then see 1/2 inch of 'new growth' that will
need tightening. They can usually tell that it's slippage and not all new
growth because of the amount of time involved. If you come in after 6
weeks with in inch and a half of new growth, it's a good bet that you've
got some slippage going on, because hair just doesn't grow that fast.
OK ladies... Pat, Sigrid, Martha, Kim, Deb, Carol, et al... give us the
details on the slippage. Am I way off base in my description?
No. That's not slippage. You're just separating the locks when that
happens (unless you've got some really gnarly fingers that catch on
everything <g
Whatever works best for you. Braiding *and* banding is the safest method, IMO.

Can someone explain slippage

2008-06-09 06:32:32

I keep reading about slippage and I'm not sure what that is. Can
someone explain it? At first I thought it meant that your locks were
coming unraveled. I can't see that happening. I left my test locks
in for three days and I had a heck of a time getting them undone!
I can feel stray hairs in some places, like when I'm running my
fingers through my hair I may have caught some strands and pulled
them out of the lock this way. Is this what is meant?
Also, while I'm on the subject, my consultant told me I could either
band (no mention of braiding), or wash my hair with a hair net. I've
braided and banded once and done the hair net thing twice. Any
thoughts on this?

My New Do

2008-06-07 00:18:54

Well the bantu knots didn't work for me. The knots wouldn't stay without
pins, and I don't have enough pins. Either I'll have to wait until my hair
gets longer, or maybe I should use fewer locks in each knot. I'll give it
a couple of months or so and try again.
So I went back to my tried and true sponge rollers. Yeah I know I
shouldn't be using those. But they work for me. I got a nice style this
morning. A little more curl than I normally like, but I know it will
loosen up. I spritzed the bang just a little cuz I didn't like the tight
curl in my bang. The spritz loosened it just enough to where I like it.
I haven't taken any pictures of this do yet. I'll take some later
today. I didn't roll the lower back, so because of the way it lays, this
style looks like it's been professionally cut in a style. I love it!

Sisterlocks. Sounds like everybody had a blast, and the Hair Days are
growing! These hair days sound like so much fun and so much love! I wish
I could just travel around the country and attend all of them!
And hey! If you're not yet a member of ANHA, what's wrong with you?! You

stick your money order in there and send it in!! And get a kitchen level
membership while you're at it so you can get a charter membership for the

ANH is a great organization, and we need to support it, as it has supported

Yeah. It would take too many pins and would look kinda tacky, as opposed
to the stylish and sophisticated look that I want (it's my ex-hubby's
sister's wedding... I gotta look FIERCE!). :-)
I'm going to set it. Maybe if the bantu knot thing works out for me, I'll
do that. The wedding is in September, so I've got plenty of time to work
on it.

Thanks Missy. I started out with 6 inches of all natural hair. I've
never been a fan of long hair either...in the past it looked best and
was easiest to handle very short. If I hadn't gotten SLs, I probably
would have cut it all off again...for what seems like the 90th time!
I would say give longer hair a chance...I find SLs so versatile and
easy to handle, I can play around with finding a good look. Somedays
at work I go through 2 or 3 styles - mostly when I get to work and
realize I didn't do anything with before leaving home :-)

Toni, you and your SL's are just TOO cute! So pretty and stylish.

Sandy, your hair is VERY cute at the length it is now. I see what
you mean as far as pinning it up. It still "could" work, but a set
of some sort (or even just as is) would be equally cute!

I think I just saw that commercial earlier this week...for a

It'll be interesting to see my consultant's reaction when she sees me next
weekend. She didn't want me to cut it just yet. But I couldn't stand it
any longer. I certainly like it a lot more now that I've cut it all off.
Yeah! I'm gonna try it!
Tomorrow I'm gonna try the bantu knots... or maybe tonight!

I like your hair, it really has the look of softness.
13 months huh? How long was it b4 you started? I have
a fear my hair will grow too long..Im not interested
in length, I don't look good with long hair, I already
know my style will be over my ears at al times or a
pony tail. Im at 7 months now and 5"

Sisterlocks in a Commercial

2008-06-03 17:27:46

Ok here is another Sisterlock siting. I think.
There is a commercial and I forgot the name of the product. It is
some kind of female product but the woman's hair looks like
Sisterlocks. On first glance she looks like she has a curly perm but
as I looked closer it has the appearance of thin curly Sisterlocks.
It looks a lot like mine. They look settled but not locked yet.

Toni,
You are truly rockin' those locks! They look great;) Also, the picture w/
your short style was very becoming; everyone can't wear styles like that, but
it was very becoming to you!
With all of these new pictures ya'll have posted, I will definitely have to
get some better pictures up:)

Depending on what kind of graphics program you have, you can sometimes
sharpen the picture and get more detail. I have a 'sharpen' tool on my
graphics program, but maybe not all programs have it.
It sure is a good feeling!

Sandy,
Thanks for the tip on scanning. That's exactly what I did on that
one picture trying to get a better resolution. I'll leave the
resolution alone next time. But I do wish the scanned pictures
showed the detail the actual ones had.
Those pictures were brand, brand, brand new (less than one hour
old). They don't look so "coiffed" today, but so far the people that
count love my Sisterlocks. (My husband, my daughter, my friends, and
even my "Why do you want to lock your hair," mother!)
I know the lady with new sisterlocks was admiring your more "mature"
locks. It makes me feel good to know that one day I'll be the one
with the mature locks that newbies admire!

Sandy she ran into the right person...did you invite her to
lockitup??? It is such a pleasure to run into "real life" SL's.
Right before I got mine I meet a woman in Minden, LA, she had the
most beautiful SL. They were 3 yrs old and reaching at bra length.
I asked her if they were SL's and of course we started talking. She
really encouraged me that I was making the right decision. Also, a
gentlemen in the area remarked how beautiful her hair was (of another
race); so I know 1st hand that SL's get a lot of attention.

Re: [LockItUp] More pictures and an update

Yep. My hair got better with each shampoo. And shampooing does help the
parts disappear quicker.
Yeah. This is where I was too. Because of all the relaxed ends, I pretty
much had no choice but to use rollers pretty regularly. But once Sheila
cut the permed ends off the top, I don't think I used rollers at all after
that -- maybe just to curl my bangs when they wanted to stick straight out.
I'll resize them for you this evening. Do you want me to upload the
resized pics for you? Or I can send them to you so you can upload them
yourself. Let me know which way you want to do it.
A note to everyone about scanning: Here's what you can do to keep them
from being so big the next time. When you scan, set your scanning software
to not more than 150 resolution. 72 is preferrable. Many people think
that if they use a high resolution (300 - 400), they'll get a clearer
picture. This is true only if you'll using the picture for print
publishing. If you're using the picture on the web, the high resolutions
only make the picture huge.

Met a Newbie

2008-06-02 01:23:30

I was sitting outside taking a break from work today when a woman walked
past who has what looked like brand new Sisterlocks. I stopped her and
asked, and she confirmed.. yes she just got her Sisterlocks 2 days ago. I
forgot to ask who did them, but they were really pretty.
All natural hair, just below the earlobes. You could see the parts, but
only in the top where she parted her hair on the side. You could see the
little squares branching off of her side part. Other than that, her hair
was pretty dense and you couldn't see the parts all through her head.
I told her that I have Sisterlocks too, and that they'll be a year old next
week. Her eyes got big and she looked SO envious. She started talking
about how pretty my hair is and she asked if she could look at them up
close. Of course I let her.
She went through my head for a minute or so and then she told me how glad
she was that I stopped her. It was good for her to see someone who has
actually been through what she is just starting. She's naturally feeling a
little bit apprehensive about it right now, but seeing my hair gave her
just what she needed.
I feel good today. :-)

More pictures and an update

2008-06-01 09:24:18

Okay, Ladies...
I've been Sisterlocked for one week. I keep thinking of a line I
read in Dr. Cornwell's book "That Hair Thing," that says, "I tell my
customers who are feeling a little insecure at this stage that if
they like their hair even a little bit at this stage, they will
absolutely LOVE it as their locks thicken and mature." I believe
this is true.
My hair has already gone through some changes in just one week. I've
washed it twice and this may have something to do with it. Most of
the parts are gone. The front is sparse, though. I love the back,
which has curly-q ends and is already looking "lockish." The front
and sides are something else. I'm sure this is because this is the
hair I had when I last used the texturizer + color in December. I
hate I ever did that. I might as well have had a perm.
At best, the ends (front, top, and sides) are frizzley and poufy, at
worst they are stick straight and don't do anything but lay there
unless I use rollers on them.
I tried the curling iron and it looks fine, but I don't like the idea
of using heat on them. I bought some perm rollers and this works
pretty good if I take the time to roll them right. Needless to say I
don't like taking the time to do this, but I have no choice until my
natural hair grows out some.
Lesson: Leave your natural hair ALONE! Sisterlocks love your
natural hair.
The pictures that I've posted were taken less than one hour after my
Sisterlocking session. I scanned them so they aren't the best
resolution. Sorry. Also, one of the pictures came out really big!
I tried to reduce it some. (I don't have much experience with pixels
and such) I've also uploaded a picture of me with relaxed hair and
with it all cut off so y'all can see from whence I came. <g

Hi. My name is Rae and I have been wearing a short
natural for about two years. My sisterfriend Wanda
told me about this group after I told her I wanted to
start sisterlocks. Does anyone know of a certified
consultant in Maryland or D.C.? I'm a little nervous
about this change, but I'm going full speed ahead.
Thanks
