You know Wanda, its stuff like this that REALLY ticks me off. I hope
that justice is served and that those employees get everything they
are intitled to. I have cousin that works for FedX, and they treat
him like crap, trying to make him work anyway, when he was injured on
the job.

Hi
I also bought some hair products from my consultant last night at my
retightening, I bought the Carols's Daughter herbal rosemary rinse
and an herbal jamaican mango lime oil with alot of good stuff in it.
You can use it for hot oil treatments or just to touch your hair up
if it gets dull. It really smells good.
My consultant says my hair looks very good & it is growing soooo
much, she says I am really taking good care of it.

Clipping Stray Hairs...Another Question

in.
I have the same type of hair and as part of the process of separating
my locks, I pull the stray hairs to release them from the lock they
have grabbed. This results in stray unlocked hair.

Is what I am doing ok? Or, should I wait until a retightening to have
them clipped? Which is better to achieve locking?

Fed Ex Fires Employees for Wearing Dreadlocks

2008-04-28 19:42:37

Hi All,
Thought you might be interested in this article. I hadn't seen out
on the list yet.
~Wanda
Fed Ex charged with discrimination
NEW YORK (AP) - Delivery giant FedEx violated federal
anti-discrimination laws when they fired seven employees who wore
dreadlocks for religious reasons, New York State Attorney General
Eliot Spitzer said.
The Memphis, Tenn.-based international delivery company has a
policy prohibiting male employees from wearing beards, ponytails or
braids. But Spitzer said in a lawsuit filed Thursday in U.S.
District Court in Brooklyn that there should be exceptions for
those whose religions include specific types of hair or beards.
He said seven FedEx couriers, most of them Rastafarians who wear
dreadlocks as part of their religion, were fired by the company in
1999. Spitzer said Rastafarians believe dreadlocks are ``a symbol
of a covenant between the wearer and his Creator.''
Spitzer said the couriers offered to wear their hair under a hat
or in a neat, businesslike fashion but the company refused and told
them to cut off their dreadlocks or lose their jobs.
Under the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Spitzer said, an individual
is ensured reasonable accommodations for sincerely held religious
beliefs.
``We live in a diverse and pluralistic society,'' Spitzer said.
``Across the nation, employers must understand that federal law
requires that religious practices be accommodated whenever
possible.''
``FedEx has always been sensitive to our employees' religious
convictions,'' FedEx spokeswoman Mary Hartmann said in response to
the charges.
By filing the lawsuit in federal court, Spitzer hopes to join a
similar lawsuit already filed by the United States Equal Employment
Opportunity Commission and strengthen state civil rights laws.

about bleaching in Africa

2008-04-28 10:52:45

Hello everyone, thank you all for your prayers for my family. I am sad to
say that my grandfather also passed away on Friday morning, but he is no
longer in pain which is a blessing.
I wanted to comment on the bleaching in Africa as well. I am African, born
and mostly raised in Zimbabwe and I know how damaging the colonial mentality
has been to African women. I grew up in a young post-colonial country
(Zimbabwe only gained its independence in 1980) and I spent much of my
childhood trying to alter myself to fit a standard of beauty that was not of
my people. The older I get the more I start to recognize the damage done to
my self-concept. I am trying to learn how to accept myself for who and what
I am. Its hard to let go of a self-image that has been burned into your
mind, but at least I recognize the problem. Unfortunately there are many
young girls and women who still try to change themselves and do not
recognize their own natural beauty. Sisterlocks has been a huge part of
this "self-discovery" for me. The funny thing is that attitudes towards
locks are very negative in my country (possibly in other african countries).
People with dreadlocks are considered to be societal outcasts, crazy people,
which doctors etc. No self-respecting young woman should wear locks. This
attitude is starting to change as people become aware of the natural hair
movement in America. I have not been back home since I got my locks and
will be going for the first time in December. I can't wait to see what
reactions I get.

Hello everyone,
I have FINALLY made up my mind to go SISTERLOCKS! Does anyone know
where I can locate a consultant in Washington, DC or Maryland? I
would be most grateful for this information. Now that I have made up
my mind to do it, I want to get it done like YESTERDAY! LOL!

I'M LOCKED!!!!!

2008-04-27 17:46:54

Finally, I'm locked. It took two days and almost 24
hours to do it but it's done. My curl pattern is very
tight and I have lots of hair, so I put my very
patient consultant through quite a workout. We didn't
finish until 3 am this morning, so I had to skip work
today.
I'm pleased, can't see much scalp at all. Just wish I
had more length, but that will happen in time. Right
now I have this little sisterlock fro going on. I
didn't have any perm and because of my curl pattern
the ends are already tightening in little balls. I
never in my life would have imagined that someone
would say my extra nappy hair was the best!
It feels good and I can't wait for the months ahead to
see it's development. Pictures are forthcoming.

Sisterlocks and Teens

2008-04-26 07:02:26

Actually I think this is a good idea... especially for a youngster. If
she's serious about growing her hair out til it's all natural, it'll be a
trying time for you both, but it'll be a wonderful bonding, sharing,
learning time for both of you too. Carol, if you don't yet have what I
call the 'bibles' of natural hair care (No Lye and Let's Talk Hair), by all
means get them. They will help you and she care for her hair as it grows
out, and it'll help her to appreciate her natural hair even before she gets
Sisterlocks.
Exactly! The braid are nice (if done well), but they can be a
chore. Sitting for hours getting it done, dealing with the awful
itch. And then the questions: Do I wash it? If so, how? And then hours
to take it down. Then combing out clumps of hair afterwards because the
hair has started to lock in the braid. Yep... ladies are getting tired of
the braids, and I don't blame them. I did the braid thing twice in 5
years. Like I've said before, I don't like fooling around with hair, and
taking out those braids was a real chore.
Actually, that's the reason I chose to lock as soon as I decided not to
perm anymore. The twisting and coiling and stuff is just too much work for
me. :-)

Re: Homecoming 2001

2008-04-26 04:37:54

My daughter is 13. She lasted until age 11 without getting a perm.
She started asking about 8 and I told her she could get one at age
10. Her permed aunties were adding a little pressure also. I could
not say too much because I was permed then also. So she made it an
extra year but 2 cousins got permed around that time so she felt she
had to have one also. Now her hair is broken off.
She told me that she wanted Sisterlocks and could not wait to get
them. So I registered to take the consultant class then she changed
her mind. Remember she is 13(in a couple of weeks). She wants to
have all natural hair before she gets them. Now she is into braids but
she and my 5 year old both love my hair. The little one wants
Sisterlocks but I want to wait a while for her. Sheila, our
Sisterlock instructor told us about how she locked a little girl's
hair and her bones in her head grew as she got older and now she says
they look terrible. I think that child was 2. My daughter is older
but I really enjoy cornrolling and twisting her hair in different
styles.
Anyway, we discussed this in class. Women were getting tired of the
perm so they went to braids. Now they are tiring of braids.
This is a great time for Sisterlocks and natural hair.
I asked about my daughter taking the class one day and Sheila said
that she thought that 14 would be a good age.

Grooming

2008-04-25 13:52:42

Hotep,
I have a question about grooming for the consultants out there,
and forgive me if this has already been discussed in my absence. Will
the stray hairs on the individual locks eventually mat into the lock
to form a thicker, stronger lock? If so, it would seem that this
would make a more more stable lock. I realize that with Sisterlocks,
the locking pattern gives stability to the locks, but does grooming
somehow interfere with this? It seems that it shouldn't. What is the
purpose of grooming other than to get a smoother looking lock? I have
friends with traditonal, smooth locks. I'm going to ask them if they
groom their hair. I would like to get my hair groomed, but I'd rather
wait if these strays will gradually mat into my locks. School me,
please. This is the reason I want to take the consultants training. I
want to learn as much as I can about my hair.

see that there are chats now. How exciting! I will definitely try to
make the next one. Sandy, you've done a wonderful job with this
message board. I'm going to head on over to ANHA and post there, too.

PS---BTW, I took my family to Puerto Rico back in April, and family I
want to tell you, my Sisterlocks were a hit there. Everyone was
asking questions. I was actually somewhat embarrassed because I
normally don't like much attention drawn to myself, but it was nice.
Unfortunately, I couldn't answer many of them because my Spanish is
not as fluent as I'd like it to be, and the women were talking so
fast that the Spanish I do know didn't do much good.(There is no
excuse for this because I live 15 minutes from Mexico. I've started a
refresher course). But rest assured, SEESterlocks is a new word in
San Juan. Also, my locks behaved beautifully in the humidity, the
pool, the ocean, and the spa in the hotel. I had no hair issues at
all except to decide whether to pull it up, or let it hang. I love my
Sisterlocks!!

Hi Amber,
I can't speak from experience, but my SL consultant recently had a baby and
she has been experiencing post-partum alopecia. She was really concerned
with some of her hair falling out and thinning locs around the hairline.
Her doctor told her that in 2 more months she should be back to normal, her
baby is 4 months old now. She was really surprised to lose her hair around
the hairline, because she said no one in her family had ever experienced
that, but still it happened to her.
Hope that helps,

Re: about bleaching in Africa

2008-04-23 04:15:45

Having lived in The Gambia, West Africa for the last 5
years, I had to respond to this one. Bleaching is
very, very common in The Gambia and Senegal. Really
terrible wigs, and bad extensions are also popular -
and in a country where everyone has sisters, cousins,
aunts... who would put their hair in amazing braids.
The shame is that the girls bleaching have flawlessly
beautiful black skin, but they're willing to trade
that for burnt orange.

Good morning . . .a newbie

2008-04-22 16:38:37

Hello,
I joined this list about a month ago and have been lurking. I just wanted
to take a moment to introduce myself. I'm Wanda Adams and a few of you may
have seen me on the anha list, as well. I reside in Denver, Colorado and
would love to meet any nappy heads, SLs, etc.
I will be Sisterlocked on 8/4/01. My date got pushed back again, but I am
patient and hope that the time will go quickly until it is time for my
sisterlocks session. I absolutely cannot wait! I decided to get my hair
Sisterlocked after I decided to stop getting relaxers. At first, I thought
I might just wear my hair pressed to have the straight look, or come up with
other options. I liked the idea of having my hair locked, but in all
honesty, I didn't want to cut off all the relaxed length and wear my hair
really short. Not knocking other people, I just knew that I was too vain to
do that. I really don't like short hair on myself, so just one of my little
things. Once I heard about the Sisterlocks method, I was really sold,
especially because I could still keep the relaxed ends until my hair grows
out more and then I can cut if off.
Anyhow, I'm really excited about it and just wanted to introduce myself
here. I've enjoyed the hints and tips that have already been shared and
once I have mine done, I will post pics.
Thanks for listening,
Wanda

Re: Pat's SL's

CC
I've never had a foraml grooming. I meant to do that before I left
Colorado ... but I did not get the time to have Grace (my consultant)
do it. I've done some minor grooming as I was instructed during
training. I don't want to cut something I shouldn't/ It's harder on
your own head.
As Sigrid would say ... my hair was locking while I was in the
chair. But I think within 6 months my hair was for the most part
locked. I still have hair around the edges and in my kitchen that is
not as mature as the rest of my head. I fight with them. They want
to come undone when washing. Some of these hairs are real short
compared to the other locks around them. That's why I usually wear
my hair toward my face. Also I don't pull my hair up much in the
back. I noticed on devon's 6 months pictures how full her back is
compared to mine ... even with her hair being shorter. That goes to
show you how much each head will differ.
I just love your pictures also. You're going to have some beautiful
SL's I can tell.
Take Care

Great question ... I was wondering the same thing. As you can see
from my picture .. my hair is almost to the point that it falls in my

around the hairline where my hair is real short. I usually put a
headband on the keep it back.
I will be interesting to see what suggestions you get.

Handling the Growth

2008-04-21 21:26:16

I'm at a stage now where I think I'm over the big hurdles, and now I'm just
looking forward to the freedom and joy of my locks and the growth that I'm
sure will come.
As you know, I've clipped all the perm from the top and sides of my hair,
so it's shorter there than in the back where I still have a couple of
inches of relaxer on the ends. So here's my question.
Currently the length in the top makes a nice bang. It's really too short to
wear pulled back unless I use a head band or something to hold it down. I
don't intend to cut anymore in the top. Now I'm just going to let it grow
and do its thing. But how do I handle it as it grows out? Eventually the
bangs will be too long for bangs and too short for much else. In my perm
days this is where I always ended up getting my hair cut. But I definitely
don't want to do that.
So... I'm not at that stage yet, but does anyone have any suggestions for
styling when I get there?

Re: [LockItUp] Rudeness in the Workplace

2008-04-21 02:00:35

This is just amazing. I'm beginning to believe that
persons who take such a negative stance against
natural hair feel that those who decline to perm any
longer are making some sort of political/radical
statement with the style we (I get locked tomorrow)
choose. I'm looking to this type of confrontation
very soon. My mother (who has been pressing her hair
all of her life, and amazingly it's still thick and to
me beautiful) did not like the idea of me getting
locks (Can't you just get braids like before?). But
once I made my decision clear, she has gotten used to
it - even asking people with locked styles on her job
if they are SL's and doing research on the net.
Anyway, I've told a few co-workers and friends of mine
- who although would not consider SL's themselves
support me.
I guess my advice (the little that I have) would be
two fold. If you feel that it's worth it: Just
educate this person. Let her know that your decision
to get locked does not reflect on her decision to stay
permed. Hair is a personal decision, everyone has to
make their own. You're not out to make new recruits,
but for those who are interested you have a wealth of
information. And as mentioned, you do not find it
necessary to comment on each new permed style that
comes out or to point out to others the damage that is
done with chemicals each time they get a touch up.
You've made this decision for YOU and you would
appreciate the respect that she would give any other
person who has made a decision about their OWN hair
(natural, permed, bald, or otherwise).
OR you could state (as mentioned before) that this is
a topic not up for debate -- period.
I really believe there is a underlying jealousy. Perm
people think that just by our hairstyle we are saying
to them "we are better because we are natural" which
is true, but not a decision we want to make for
others, just for ourselves. People can continue to
perm until they have one strand of hair, I've made MY
decision and it's my head.
Ok, I've gone off the deep end. Did I mention I get
locked tomorrow?

My locks are thicker and different lengths. I did not have my hair cut

they have a shag look when curled. I just wet them and rolled on medium to

Hi ladies,
Haven't written in a while, but have been reading the compilation
post regularly. Been SL'ed for two months now and I think things are
going well. But I need a bit of advice. I am getting major slippage
in the back of my head. particularly near the nape of my neck. When I
wash, I braid and band and I dont seem to slip with that. I'm not
sure what is happening. I wonder if it has anything to do with my
working out. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. My consultant
says I may be too hard on my hair, but I really just leave it alone.
Spritz it in the morning, occasionaly two-strand twist them and make
bantu knots to give them a bit of body. But nothing more really. I'm
a bit flummoxed.
Thanks.

I know of a lady who encountered something like that the first day
that she wore twists to work. She told the coworker that her hair
could never, ever, be the topic of discussion again. That seemed to
work.

Painful visits

2008-04-18 14:58:06

I'd like to hear about anyone's experience with consultants who pull
too hard. I may be tenderheaded, but I tend to avoid consultants that
hurt me. Too much pulling results in itchy scalp (I assume as the
scalp is trying to recover from the pulling) and those pesky bumps
that also itch.
In my journey, which maybe I'll post my website to the web if I ever
get done, I've seen consultants in GA, Charlotte, and Philly - 6 in
all. Of the 6, there are only 2 from which my scalp recovered quite
nicely from. With these 2, visits were painless & afterwards my scalp
is a little sore at first, but is fine the next day. With some of the
others, the visit itself could be painful. I think the worst case
left me with bumps and itch for about a week.
I've noticed with some that saying I'm tenderheaded hasn't helped.
Maybe some consultants are trying to make a supertight lock??

Re: Shevette's Sisterlocks

2008-04-18 11:36:58

I had mostly Sisterlocks, some twists, some were Sisterlocked at teh
new growth and twisted on the ends, and lots of relaxed hair was
SLed. I also had various sizes and many were too big. I had one big
twist at the very center of my forehead! I think the twists were
partly due to laziness and assuming that these "traditional" locks
could later be maintained with the Sisterlock method. Mind you, this
was 3 years ago & that person, who shall remain nameless, is no
longer recommended by the home office.

Re: Shevette's Locks

2008-04-18 04:47:44

I got them put in 3 years ago. At the time I had only 2 or 3 months
of new growth. People thought I had braids put in. I don't know if
you can consider my hair truly locked. I took down the front with the
help of my mother & best friend (started this past Nov and finished
in Jan) and had it redone "properly".
"Shevette" doesn't mean anything. My mom says she made it up - I AM
older than the car (Chevy Chevette)!

My Child's Hair

2008-04-17 16:35:24

Even though this does not pertain to sisterlocks, I need some advice
about my son's hair. He is 16 months old and has a head full of thick
partly curly/partly wiry hair. I have tried children's detangling
spray on his hair, only to have it return to it's natural dry state
15 minutes later. What do you recommend that I use on his hair that
will not cause a lot of build-up, moisturize it, and hold his natural
curl pattern throughout the day?

Re: STILL THINKING ABOUT IT..... THANK YOU AGAIN

2008-04-17 02:34:51

I just LOVE this group, you all are so nice!! Thank you Sandy and
all the rest for your responses. Im going to try to answer some of
the questions that I got. First of all, right now Im just wearing my
hair in a ponytail, that Im SICK of, but other than individuals and
twists... My hair has also been slightly texturized, and I just wash,
condition, oil (olive oil), and back into the ponytail it goes. When
it dries, its bushy, but I tame it down with a few sprits of water. I
want to be able to do different things with my hair without it
becoming a major issue everyday. And its just like you said, I want
to be free from worrying about the weather, and all of the hair
products that dont work, and then being *&^&%%* about the money that
was spent for it. Im not rich by no means, but Im willing to save
and spend for anything that is worthwhile. The money that I spend
for individuals when I can afford it, could certainly be put towards
the Sisterlocks. I have already ordered the book called "That Hair
Thing", and am waiting for it to arrive. If anyone has a names of
consultant in Washington DC, let me know. I know I keep saying THANK
YOU, but THANK YOU AGAIN. Another question, what is done to the new
growth, when you go back to the consultant for a "retightening?

STILL THINKING ABOUT IT..... THANK YOU AGAIN

2008-04-16 22:39:25

At a retightening sesstion, they do the same thing to the new growth that
was done to the whole head in your initial locking session. They use the
Sisterlock tool to put the hair into a locking pattern.

Sisterlocks 4 mths update

2008-04-16 07:06:17

Hello everyone,
I have been absent from the group for a while but have been reading as many
of the posts as I could. I have been going through a very difficult time in
my life with the loss of my fiances father and my grandfather being
terminally ill. At any rate, I am back and I am still incredibly happy
with my SLs which at four months are filling in nicely. I just can't wait
for a little more length. I no longer have to band and braid my hair when I
shampoo (YEAH). I plan on posting some pics tonite. I went to a wedding in
the Dominican Republic last week and was so thankful for my sisterlocks. I
swam every day without a care in the world. My friend who was with me and
who is wearing twists that she is locking, couldn't get her hair wet and she
was so envious of the freedom that my hair gives me.
I have a question for the group. My consultant is going away on vacation
but I really need a retightening. She may not be able to fit me into her
schedule until she returns. Does anyone know of consultants in the NYC
Metropolitan area (NJ & Manhattan preferably) other than Keichelle. I know
someone mentioned a consultant in Manhattan which is short train ride away
from me. I would appreciate any help. Also, is that something that
consultants have a problem with? Would another consultant not want to do my
retightening if I don't plan on sticking with them permanently? I love my
consultant, but my crazy life has made it very difficult to schedule an
appointment and I desparately want my hair retightened. I don't want to do
anything that is considered inappropriate. What do you guys think? Please
advice me! Thanks All.
Peace

Sandy it was great meeting you, Pat and Cherie also.
I really enjoyed the class. Sheila and her family are so nice and
really talented. There was a lot of info and I was trying to soak it
all up. They know a lot about natural hair.
We had only 5 in the class so it was very cozy. The other women were
so warm and friendly. It is something about women in the natural
splendor. No jealously or competition but a lot of networking and
sharing. The time went by very quickly and now I am trying to sort
it all out.
I want to get certification so my first 3 clients will benefit from a

Re: STILL THINKING ABOUT IT.....

2008-04-14 08:11:17

I wonder how permanent is permanent. If you've got a couple of weeks,
some good friends who won't tear your hair up, a lifetime of
patience, and some straight pins... But you didn't hear it from me...
I suggest you buy the book and the video to help you make a decision.
That's what I did and I think the money was well worth it as far as
helping me decide to go through with it.
What do you mean by free? Free from chemicals? Free from salon visits
where you spend most of the time waiting? Free from the spending lots
of mooney on hair styling products? Or something else? Nothing is
truly free, unless you maintain your locks yourself. But then you're
giving up your time...
They use a tool to lock the hair. They loop the hair though itself so
you wind up with what looks like a backwards braid. They are not
twisted at all.
If you're lazy like me, it's low daily maintenance. :)

Re: [LockItUp] STILL THINKING ABOUT IT.....

2008-04-14 06:22:26

Of course. You're right to ask the questions and do the research. Learn
all you can about the process. Check out the other lock styles, too. Then
decide what you want to do with your hair *after* you have all the
information. The book and the video will go along way towards helping you
with this.
May I ask what you're doing with your hair now? Is it natural? Is it
relaxed? Relaxers 'permanently' damage the hair and must be grown out or
cut off. Sisterlocks does nothing to damage the hair. It simply lets your
hair do it's own thang... but in a structured way that allows for easier
styling. No toxic chemicals to permanently strip the life out of your
hair. If you should decide that you no longer want Sisterlocks (I have no
idea why anyone would feel this way), you will have to either grow them out
or cut them off... just like a relaxer. So... I just said that to explain
that locking our hair is no more permanent than putting chemicals on
it. But it's a whole lot healthier!
Yes you will be able to style it. Many people don't realize it, but all
locks can be styled. With Sisterlocks you have the added ability to style
your hair in many of the same styles you have become used to with relaxed
hair.
Sisterlocks gives you *true* freedom. No more running from rain and
wind. Freedom to let your man or your kids play in your hair without
worrying about them messing it up or coming out with a handful of
grease. Freedom to get up and go without even looking in the mirror and
*knowing* your hair still looks great. Freedom from spending all day
Saturday in the beauty shop. Freedom from buying all sorts of hair products
that promise you that 'bouncy shiny' hair. Your hair has a natural bounce
if you don't strip the life out of it with chemicals. And it has an inner
sheen that doesn't need grease.
Sisterlocks aren't twisted. The consultant uses a special tool to set the
hair in a locking pattern... sort of like crocheting. The new growth is
locked in this same manner.
There are two ways to answer this. If you're talking about work that you
will have to do to maintain your Sisterlocks, the answer is no. It's very
low maintenance.
If you're talking about the money you'll spend to have Sisterlocks, some
people feel that in the beginning... before the locks are 'set'..
Sisterlocks are pretty high maintenance money-wise (even though you're
getting a LOT of bang for your buck). But once your locks are set, it's
very low maintenance. And even during the early times, the daily
maintenance at home is almost nil... but you do have to go for the
retightenings every 6 - 8 weeks. Once the locks are set you can take the
class to learn to retighten your hair yourself. From then on, you can
handle your own maintenance.
I love it because from the very first day I threw away all my hair
stuff. I use very little stuff on my hair. No grease or gels... just a
touch of oil on my scalp after shampooing. Other than that... I don't do
much of anything except spritz it with water and run my fingers through it
in the morning.
When you go and visit a couple of consultants (check with the home office
to make sure they've been properly trained), be sure and ask them all of
these questions. Check out the 'Sisterlocks 3-visit package' file in our
files area. This file came directly from the Sisterlocks web site and
includes information that you should definitely have on hand when you go
and check out the consultants in your area.

Re: QUESTIONS??????????

2008-04-14 01:15:28

The person that put my Sisterlocks in locked the relaxed hair. When
the hair is straight, the hair can slip up the lock ("slippage"). You
wind up with what look like loops where the hair has slid up. It's
really ugly. :) To fix it, you can slide your fingers down the lock
while gently pulling. After a year or so, the slippage was happening
more and more often and I got so frustrated I had the permed hair cut
off. If your hair is texturized, you probably won't have as much
slippage as someone with more relaxed hair.

Re: [LockItUp] Hello Everybody

2008-04-13 14:43:34

Brie, you hair is beautiful! You've been doing a wonderful job with the
maintenance.
I'm not at that point yet, but I think you're doing it right. It's my
understanding from talking to other locks wearers that this is a part of
grooming your locks. Those loose hairs are gonna be there. Some people
just let them stay and don't worry about them. Others have them groomed
because they like a neater-looking lock. I plan to have mine groomed.
I don't know if these hairs will eventually be drawn into the lock. But I
don know that some people snip their off because they like a neater looking
lock. I think it's just
a more like I said before, I have heard of
I'm not familiar with this problem. But maybe the lint pic that Nappy Hair
Affair sells would help with this. http://www.nappyhairaffair.com
I don't myself, but many people do... and I probably will eventually for
the lock grooming. I don't have a dandruff problem, so I wouldn't need
that type of service. I just hope I haven't jinxed myself and wake up
tomorrow with a head full of dandruff and dry scalp. LOL!
Do you know whether the flakes are dandruff or dry scalp? The two aren't
the same, and there are different treatments/recipes we can recommend
depending on which of those problems you actually have.
I'll be interested in what the consultants here have to say about your
grooming questions.
And welcome to the group. I love your pictures!

Hello everyone,
I am new to this club, and I have looked at all the pictures. I
started reading from the first post, and you all are really
inspiring, beautiful sisters. I have went to the Sisterlock webpage
and looked at all of that stuff too. Im still trying to decide if I
want Sisterlocks. Everyone I have seen with the locks look so
beautiful.
I am afraid because I know that its a permanent thing to do to my
hair, and I want to make sure that Im making the RIGHT decision. But
I also want to be free.
Will I be able to do different sytles with my hair? Right now its
shoulder length, and it has been slightly texterized. Most of the
time I wear individuals for the summer. I still dont understand how
the retwisting thing goes, so hopefully someone can explain it to
me. Is it a high maintanence style? Thank you all for your posts,
and sorry for rambling, but I am so excited about this Sisterlocks
stuff!!!

Hello Everybody

2008-04-12 03:09:05

I've had Sisterlocks for 16 months and have had to basically care for
them myself except for the advice that I have gleamed from this group
as well as Moyosafi's list when it existed. To make a very long
story short, I have lived in Germany for the past 7 years and the
lady that put my locks in decided shortly thereafter to severe our
relationship. I flew to Charlotte for a retightening and to take the
class about a year ago. Lord only knows what an experienced
consultant will say when he/she sees my hair but I think that I have
been doing a pretty good job. I am concerned however about grooming
my locks and was hoping I could get some advice from some of you.
I have quite of bit of loose/stray hairs in each lock and have tried
to control them by snipping them off with scissors. I know I'm
probably not explaining this very well but what I basically do is
take an individual lock and working from tip to scalp trim the stray
hairs off. Is this something that I should do or will the hairs
eventually become part of the lock? Also, how do you remove dandruff
and/or dry scalp particles that have attached to the hair follicle?
I've tried using clarifying shampoo and other techniques but it
doesn't work all of the time. Do any of you use the services
of "natural hair beauticians" for this type of maintenance?
Thanks in advance for any information that you provide.

Solar Rollers

2008-04-08 01:08:56

Kim:
The braid solar rolllers can also be used for small straw sets and
larger spiral sets. I find I can put more hair on the rollers and
consequently, it takes less time to roll my hair and remove the
rollers. Using them for braid sets would probably be more work than
just braiding my hair.
I also used a hair spritz when I set my hair of water, Queen Helene
Setting Gel, aloe vera gel and a few drops of essential oil (
ylang-ylang) that worked pretty well. I lightly sprayed my Sisterlocks
before I rolled them up.
Cheers,

their Sisterlocks initially done wrong and would like to talk about
how they've had to deal with that?

Re: [LockItUp] Locking coming soon/Retightening question

2008-04-07 15:34:10

Not difficult at all. The class lasts about two hours, but it doesn't
really take that long to learn the technique for your locking pattern.
Don't feel bad. I never learned how to do that either. :-) Yes you can
eventually be totally free of having anyone else do your hair. Some of us
choose to continue going to their consultant for various reasons...
depending on the person. I want to be the major person taking care of my
hair, but I also want to go back to the consultant occasionally and have
her do my retightening so she can check it out and make sure I'm doing
everything correctly. Some folks just like the pampering every once in
awhile. Some folks just don't want to do their own hair at all. We have a
choice, depending on our wants and needs.
Indeed it is! You can take the retightening class... when it's time for
you to do so... and never go back to a consultant at all, if that's what
you want to do.
For me, learning was about 30 minutes. Believe me it's *very*
easy. Naturally you don't learn enough in the class to hang out your own
shingle and start doing other peoples' heads.. but you learn enough to
maintain your own... it's one simple pattern and very easy to master. You
won't be fast, like a person who has been doing it for years, but that
doesn't really matter.

Locking coming soon/Retightening question

2008-04-07 05:40:11

Hi y'all,
I've really been enjoying your posts, mainly lurking
these days (only access is my PC at work right now -
long story). But just so you know, all of your
words/thoughts are encouraging.
I FINALLY get my locks done this Saturday! I was
originally scheduled to get them done on June 16th,
but my friend from Washington got her flight cancelled
due to bad weather conditions. This as well as other
recent EXTREMELY stressful events have dampened my
enthusiasm somewhat, but I'm ready (with about 4 -5
inches of completely natural hair that I cannot
manage!)
My final question before I get it lock, exactly how
difficult is is to learn how to retighten your own
locks? I've read of several members who have taken
the class, but still want a consultant to do their
retightenings. My plan is to be completely free of
anyone doing my hair but me (I never mastered even
learning how to press my own naps). I was full,
complete and utter freedom. I'm just wondering if
this is possible. I know that learning does not
happen overnight and my consultant has offered to help
guide me/check out my hair once I take the class
(after my locks are fully mature of course). But for
all who have taken the class, I need your input.
Thanks,
Vicky

In Response To My Sisterlock Experience

2008-04-05 23:40:54

Hi group! Just wanted to share a little more with you all. I have
seen all of the responses to my last major post, and it seems to me
that what I posted struck a nerve with many of you....probably due to
the fact that you all have had your share of ignorant comments and
encounters with people.
Yes, I do currently work in a beauty salon, but I am only a
receptionist and shampoo assistant. I do have a license, but I am
currently not doing hair myself. Having said that, I think these
ladies are freaking out because as the receptionist I am the first
thing people see when they walk through the door. Therefore, I am
always getting comments on my hair. I have become friendly with many
of the customers so far, and they are always complimenting me on my
locks. Some even testify that they are considering going natural,
too.
You should be a fly on the wall to see the look on their operators'
faces when they make those comments. I'm not trying to influence
others to go natural, it is just what's best for me. I think that
since the other stylists don't see me "stressin'"
over my decision to go natural, they DO feel threatened.
One lady even made a comment, " She's not with us anymore."
What's up with that comment?! Am I deceased, or what? Oh well, that
just goes to show you the mentality of creamy crack addicts and their
pushers(stylists).

Re: [LockItUp] Oprah and Natural hair

2008-04-05 21:59:10

This is such great news. So many people look up to Oprah as a class act...
and rightfully so. For her to go natural would be a major step in our
'cause'. I will certainly be keeping my eyes and ears open for this.
You sure did have a good day! Good for you Devon!
Hmm... now that I'm thinking about this, of course Oprah would look good
with Sisterlocks, but I hope she goes with twists or (more likely)
traditional locks. I'm not one to try to make a statement with my hair,
but anything Oprah does with hers would automatically be a statement -- and
I'm sure she's taking that into consideration. So... if she's gonna make a
statement, I'd like for you to make it loudly. Not going for any corporate
look or 'more acceptable' look, as in Sisterlocks... but go all the way
with traditional locks.
Of course, *any* natural style for Oprah would be making a pretty big
statement IMO. I just can't wait to see this!

Oprah said she isn't free yet but she plans on being free when she's 50
(she's 47 now). I thought that was pretty good, considering I wondered
what she was thinking these days. So, I guess there's hope still. At
lunch several women came up to me and said "you're one of the free
women huh?" I also got interviewed by the local TV station and was on
the news last nite.
Devon, that's great! Did the TV interviewer also ask if you were one of
the free women? I'm thinking that Oprah's decision to wait until she's
50 may have something to do with her TV contract.

Pam,
I couldn't bring myself to buy them because I was thinking, "If it
gives the just braided look, why not just braid my locks?" Anyhow, I am
curious about them. I have a lot of locks, so braiding all of them is
burdensome. I can't just put 10 braids in and be done. I have to put in
over 20 braids, otherwise, the braid is too fat and unravels. So now
I'm curious about the solar rollers because I'm thinking that maybe I
can put them in and take them out a lot faster than rolling.

Oprah and Natural hair

2008-04-04 22:44:43

Just wanted to share-
I don't remember if it was this list or another one where we had the writing
campaign going to get on Oprah's show. Anyway I wanted to report that I
attended Oprah's "Live Your Best Life" seminar yesterday in San Francisco. She
was not 5 minutes into her opening when she made reference to "hair". She said
that the only thing that separated white women and black women is our hair.
Everyone laughed, and then she went on to talk a little about the what we as
black women go thru with our hair. Then she said that there are African American
women out there who have broken the cycle and freed themselves. When you see
women with locs (she said dreadlocks) and the other styles, natural, etc. that
those women have "set themselves free". She said she isn't free yet but she
plans on being free when she's 50 (she's 47 now). I thought that was pretty
good, considering I wondered what she was thinking these days. So, I guess
there's hope still. At lunch several women came up to me and said "you're one of
the free women huh?" I also got interviewed by the local TV station and was on
the news last nite. All in all I had a pretty good day. Oh, and Oprah was

Takeisha,
Welcome, as well. I wanted to respond to your above comment. There's a
big difference betweem an hour and a half and five hours. Did you wait
a longer amount of time between your retightenings than normal? Or is
the new consultant NEW as in you're the first person she's retightened?

Re: Makes My Heart Glad

Amen, girl. Being natural exemplifies our ability to make decisions and
be comfortable with them regardless about what other people think
about it. Including family, employers and friends and certainly not
those that don't fit into any of those categories. We can love them
and respect them and still respect ourselves. Damn, that feels good.

SolarRollers

2008-04-04 01:08:17

Hello Everyone,
I guess alot of folks are having a great time at the Detroit Natural
Hair Day. It is today, I wish I was there. I have never been to one.
Anyway I purchased the Nandi solar rollers and I tried them out last
night. I got the gold ones for the just braided look or the mini
spiral look. My hair came out spiraled it was cute. I think I am
going to enjoy using them. I bought 2 packs 10 in each, 5 medium & 5
long. I think I am going to buy one more pack though.
Well this is the longest I have gone without a retightening it has
been 9 weeks, I am scheduled to get one on july 2. I usually get a
retightening every 6 or 7 weeks. I kind of like the way my hair looks
though. You can't see any scalp & it has alot of body. Hope everyone
enjoys their Sunday!!!!

Makes My Heart Glad

2008-04-03 12:04:16

I'm so happy to see so many of my sisters coming over to the nappy
side. Whether Sisterlocks, other types of locks, afros, or whatever....
nappy is better! It's better for our health, it's better for our
pocketbooks, it's better for our inner being.
I can't tell you how my feelings about myself have changed since I made the
decision to stop relaxing my hair. I felt a great weight lift off my
shoulders as soon as I made the decision, even though I hadn't actually
done anything yet cuz I had to wait and let the perm grow out a bit. Just
knowing that I would never again subject my hair and scalp to those toxic
chemicals released me from a burden.
Now that I think about it, I think it's partly a control issue. I feel
like I'm in control now where I wasn't before. I made the decision as
opposed to going along with the unnatural norm. I control what is done to
and for my hair. I'm no longer addicted to the creamy crack. I'm in control!

Re: Almost there, too

Hey Toni, we're in the same boat! My date is July 1, and I too am very
excited.
A bit nervous too, but the closer I get to the date, the better and more at
peace I feel.
I've got about six test locks and I've been experimenting like crazy.
I spritzed them with water and rolled them with a curler and I couldn't
believe the cute little springy curl I got and how it long it lasted. Even
when I just wet and twist them they get all wavy! It really is kinda cool.
Good Luck on Your Journey!

Girl you are soooo right, it use to bother me alot, now it just
bothers me a little, because I know that they don't know what they
are missing. I would never go back to perm & I let them know that.
They are brainwashed just the way I use to be, so I understand where

Re: Is All About Rollers?

2008-04-02 14:14:13

Dear L,
Check out www.geocities.com/happynnappy/index.html.
There you will find models wearing their SL like traditional locks
all with different textures, density and etc. All of these models
started out with natural hair and simply spritzed it encouraging
their hair to swell and settle.
I will sometime soon include a model with very short locks also not
curled. One of the main benifits of wearing my hair natural was to
get away from rollers and enjoy natural hair freedom.
I now curl my hair once every 3 months , but I ususally prefer to
braid it wet giving it a crinkly look or opt for the sculpted lock
looks. The style of choice for me now is a waterfall accented by
brightly colored scarfs/headbands or freestyle highlighted with hair
jewels.
Honey just have some fun!

Get up and Go!

2008-04-02 09:00:40

She loves her Sisterlocks. She wanted traditional locks last Fall, but
because I wasn't ready I asked her why did she want to be locked into a
hairstyle. When I became enlightened and after researching Sisterlocks, I
decided to lock in February of this year. I asked her if she wanted to
embark upon this journey with me. She was more than ready! She doesn't
like to get her hair combed so in her eyes, this was the perfect style for
her. Right now, because of all the additional upkeep until the hair
actually locks, she often says she would have preferred traditional locks,
but I remind her that there is upkeep with traditional locks as well.

Re: [LockItUp] Is All About Rollers?

2008-04-02 05:57:44

It depends on your hair type. Some folks hair is nice and thick and
glorious when they first get them... some are not. Particularly those of
us who start out with mostly permed hair. When I first got my Sisterlocks,
they looked like teeny weeny braids, and naturally the permed hair was
super-straight. It needed some help.
It'll probably look just fine... especially since it's all natural. Keep
in mind that lots of folks just feel that they need to roll their
hair. Because of years of dealing with relaxers and having to roll or curl
our hair to make it look good, it's hard to change the mindset and the
feeling that our hair has to be 'curled' to look nice. Depending on your
hair type and how it takes to the new Sisterlocks, you may or may not need
to use rollers. If it sticks straight out like mine, you'll probably need
a little something.
But many people with all-natural hair get new Sisterlocks and the natural
curl in their hair is all that's necessary.
But be warned... whether your hair is all natural or partly relaxed, new
Sisterlocks *do not* look like the gorgeous Sisterlocks pictures you see in
most places. Those pictures -- most of them anyway -- are of people who
have been locked for awhile and whose hair has matured into the
locks. Don't expect your hair to look like that when you first get it done.

Is All About Rollers?

2008-04-01 16:07:15

Hello Everyone
As always, I am loving the posts! (Welcome Vivian).
I have a question: it seems like no one is happy when they first get their
locks until the roll them some kind of way (Caruso / Perm rods etc.). Do the
locks not look nice enough to wear them uncurled? I am curious, because I
have one week to go before I get my locks. I too have 5 - 7 inches of natural
hair (no chemical).
Thanks,
Leighann
