Re: Ornaments/Swimming

Hi Iggy,
That is a good question regarding swimming??? I have been locked 6
months & have a pool but I have not gotten in it yet. I think I am
kind of afraid to get chlorine in my SL's, I don't know??? It is very
hot here in Miami so it will either be the pool or the ocean . We go
to the beach alot matter of fact I have been twice since having my
locks, I get into the water but I don't get my hair wet.
I wash my hair every two weeks.

Hey Sandy I can relate to that heat & humidity girl!!! I live in Miami
we have that all the time. Matter of fact today was one of those days
& I had curled my hair with the curling iron, I went to get my car
windows tinted & had to sit outside for an hour, all of my curls fell
out & my hair drawed up, I knew it would though. It was alright
because I played hooky from work today so I really did not mind all
that much.
I hear ya though about the bangs, girl I had to move that hair off of
my forehead, TOO HOT!!!!

Ya see? That's what happens when you do your homework ahead of time. You
knew that it wasn't going to be gorgeous on the first day; and even though
you didn't love that look, you knew to hang in there. You and your husband
have noticed a difference in just a few short days. Think what it's gonna
be like in a month... 3 months... 6 months!!

Ornaments/Swimming

2008-02-29 00:19:50

Ok, so I'll admit I'm a little hurt that my first
e-mail only got one reply (sniff, sniff). But maybe
y'all can help me with a few other questions.
First, in lots of the pics I see these little
ornaments/beads on locks. I love them and once I get
mine done (June 16th, June 16th!) I can see myself
wearing them. Where can I buy these and (I know this
may sound dumb, but I can hardly pull my hair into a
ponytail) how are they put on?
As far a swimming in chlorinated water, what is the
sisterlock expirience. I know chlorine is not good
for hair in general, so I guess you would just wash
after a swim?
Which leads to another question, how often do most
wash their lock?
Thanks,
Iggy

Re: [LockItUp] Comments from the Big Easy

2008-02-28 21:50:18

I didn't really have any experiences regarding hair at all.
There were *lots* of locks in New Orleans everywhere I went and in all
types of jobs and positions. Locks seemed to be as prevalent in the work
force there as perms. Keep in mind I wasn't hanging out in any of
conservative places, so I couldn't really speak on that.
No one asked about my hair, but I noticed a few folks looking real hard.
:-) I saw two SL's while I was there.
As far as my personal hair experience, it was hotter than hell in that
town. Temperatures in the high 80's with humidity in the high 80's
too. So it was hot & sweaty all the time I was there. My hair had
absolutely NO trouble with the humidity. I'd wear it up, I'd wear it down,
I never rolled or curled it. I used a headband one day and a couple of
hairpins another day.
The heat was such that I just couldn't stand my bangs in my face, and in
the middle of the day I'd reach into my purse, find a couple of hairpins or
a headband, and pull those locks out of my face. I think my hair liked the
humidity, though. Lots of moisture. It stayed nice and fluffy all the time.
The only problem I had (and it wasn't even really a problem) was that I had
to wash it as soon as I got home because my scalp was itching... an issue
that I don't usually have. I figure it was because of all the salty sweaty
buildup on my scalp. So I washed it a few days before I normally would
have. No problemo!
Have I mentioned how much I love New Orleans?

want to touch your hair? Did they have lots of questions? Did they
already know about Sisterlocks? Were there a lot of nappy headed ladies
around? Just curious.

finally locked

2008-02-27 22:32:03

just to update everyone, I got my locks completed on May 31st. We started
Monday evening and my locktician worked for five hours and then Wednesday we
started at 8AM and got done at 4PM. Everyone keeps asking me if I like them and
today I actually looked in the mirror and thought, yeah, I like them. My
originally reply was, "this is what I expected them to look like." I can see
the potential and think this will be a good journey for me.
When I first got them done my hubby asked if I liked my hair and I was in a bad
place (the day did not go well, long story) and so he and I were at odds because
he was upset that I spent all that money and wasn't pleased. We got over it and
now we are both enjoying the new look. I can't wait to get my girls hair done
and they are also excited but it will be a few months.

Chell,
Monica Geary has beautiful micro Sisterlocks. You can view her photo at
the Sisterlocks website:
http://www.sisterlocks.com
Click on the photos link from their 2000 calendar. Her locks are
mature. Also you can check out my folder in the files section. There a
two ladies in there with micros. Here's the thing, not all micros will
look the same, either. They're called micros because of the parting
size we use. When parting, I can make each square 1/4" on two different
people and their micro SL will be different sizes. It depends on the
density of a person's hair. Hope this helps.

The clarity comes more from the camera than from whatever you do to the

digital camera will give you that kind of clarity, even after the pictures

A Strong Woman -vs- A Woman of Strength
A strong woman works out every day to keep her
body in shape...
but a woman of strength kneels in prayer to keep

A strong woman isn't afraid of anything ...
but a woman of strength shows courage in the
midst of her fear...
A strong woman won't let anyone get the best of her ...
but a woman of strength gives the best of her to everyone...
A strong woman makes mistakes and avoids the same in the future...
a woman of strength realizes life's mistakes can also be
God's blessings and capitalizes on them...
A strong woman walks sure footedly...
but a woman of strength knows God will catch her when she falls...
A strong woman wears the look of confidence on her face...
but a woman of strength wears grace...
A strong woman has faith that she is strong enough for the journey...
but a woman of strength has faith that it is in the
journey that she will become strong...
Pass this on to a good woman...I just did!

New Member/Curl Pattern Question

2008-02-23 04:41:05

Hello sisterlock sisters!
I'm so excited to be a part of this wonderful group.
I just got my consultation yesterday and my
appointment is on June 16th (I can hardly wait).
First, to Sandy your website was super-informative.
The transistion pictures were fabulous! (I'm from
Detroit too btw). I really helped me get a sense of
what I will be going through AND led me to this group!
Thanks, I love ya girl.
I have a question. Sisterlocks tend to be varied
(according to curl pattern, etc.), I'm trying to get a
feel for how my hair MIGHT turn out. My consultant
said that I have a really tight curl pattern with kind
of thick hair as well (which I'd never knew since I'd
NEVER, EVER, washed my hair and let it AIR dry) Which
of you ladies (or gents) who have posted pictures have
similar hair? I do know that since my hair is unique
my Sisterlocks do will be also!
This is exciting (and slightly scary)!!!!!!

SisterLock Size

2008-02-23 00:28:23

Hello you beautiful SL'd sistas! This is Amber. Still wanting sisterlocks,
but waiting till I move closer to a consultant. The closest is three hours
away! :-( I heard about the micros that took over 30 hours because the lady
had over 6 inches of natural hair. I wonder if I'll ever find someone
willing to spend the week to do mine! My hair is fifteen inches long!! :-(
I don't want to spend the extra money travelling, because I know I'll most
likely have to spend about $1000 for the SLs because of my hairs length. I
even am thinking about cutting it. (my photos are still in the files)
But I wouldn't want the micros. In fact, with my hair texture, I would
think that the larger locks would look best.
To all the SL consultants (and folks with lots of knowledge on the subject):
I know that the LESS kinky your hair is, the longer it takes to lock, but
what are the varying rates based on SL size? Am I correct in thinking that
the larger the lock, the faster the hair will lock?
Also, I finially got my copy of That Hair Thing and the Sisterlocks
Approach. In the photo section, do all the ladies there have SLs? or do
some have regular traditional locks? I'm especially interested in knowing
about the first photo (pg 54) Eleane. Does anyone know if she have large
SLs, or traditionals?
Thanks for helping me out. I can't wait to lock my world. But I will use
this time, to save money, and learn all I can about the proccess. Thanks
y'all. Amber :-)

Pictures Pictures Pictures!

2008-02-22 19:24:25

I'm looking through all the pictures that were posted while I was hangin'
out on in the French Quarter. <g
Belvery your SL look great! 3 weeks and I can't determine any parts. Your
hair seems to be quite thick. Maybe that's why you didn't have to deal
with the "plucked chicken" look. I still get the parts in the top where my
natural hair is thinner (thanks to the creamy crack) and straighter, so I
don't retighten all the way to the scalp and that alleviates the
problem. So... when we will get updated pictures?
Jennifer - Love the pictures from the Hair Day!! I could feel the love
through my computer screen!
Kim - OH MY GOD!!! These micros are stunning! I shudder to think of the
work you put into this. I know your customer was thrilled! As her locks
mature, she'll have a smile plastered on her face so big that it could
supply energy to the state of California! LOL! Please shoot us a recent
picture occasionally so we can follow her SL journey.
Pam - Love those colored locks, gurl! Your pictures are lovely! And you
look SO happy!
I think I'm missing one. Did Shantrell upload any pictures yet?

Welcome back! I wanted to let you know that I bought the Sisterlocks book and
read it in a day! I called the home office, got the "Come Home To

but I'm not definate yet; still doing my research. I'm not one to make hasty
decisions about anything, particularly my hair. I'm meeting with a consultant
on Monday to look at her book and to see what Sisterlocks look like in
person. I'll let you know how it goes. Thank you so much for your help and
guidance.

Re: Micro Question for Consultants

2008-02-21 14:01:14

--- In LockItUp@y..., "Sandy" <diamonique@e...
In a way, it does sound like I'm trying to talk people out of it. I
explain about the extra cost for the initial locking session, and the
extra cost, due to a longer session, for the retightenings. I find
myself having to say, "I'm not trying to talk you out of it, but you
should know ahead of time about the increased time and expense." That
usually helps them understand. Then I wonder if they think that I think
that they can't afford it, and who am I to tell them how to spend
their money. No ones ever said that, so I guess it's OK. With the last
client, the first consultant she visited would not do micros, so she
probably got the impression that I didn't want to do them, either. I
don't mind. I like to give the clients what they want as long as they
have an understanding of what's in store for them.

Re: Digest Number 376

2008-02-21 02:03:31

Did you ask her about this stuff during your consultation? Deciding on
size, finding out about the starter kit, pricing, etc., should all be
discussed and decided upon during your initial consultation.
I'm just saying this for the benefit of the new people that have
joined. The consultation is not just for you to view the video and
get your test locks. It's also for you to ask all questions and know
ahead of time exactly what you'll be getting.
There's a file in our files area about the Sisterlocks 3-visit
package. This information was copied directly from the Home Office
website, and it's a must-read for everyone who is contemplating
getting Sisterlocks.

Micro Question for Consultants

This brings up a question for Kim and all the consultants here. When a
client tells you that she wants micros, do you tell advise her of the

that you would try to talk people out of it, but do you let them know
just what's in store for them with the micros?

Jennifer,
My initial locking session started early, around 9 a.m. on Nov 10, 2000 we
stopped at about 11:00 p.m and started early again the next morning. It wasn't
completed until late Nov 11, 2000 p.m.
I started with mostly 3-4 inches. Some areas were shorter due to breakage from
the various damaging things I had done and was doing to it; perms, coloring,
combing, and texturizers. I started with semi-natural hair.
I would put a texturizer in my hair for a couple of minutes and comb through it
with a wide tooth comb, usually 4 swipes and rinse it out right away - just so I
could comb through it without breaking off any more. I also had a permanent
color in it and colored it right before I got locked. Wish I hadn't done any of
that now : (
My hair is now 4-7 inches long and the damaged areas are coming along nicely. I
realize I have a hairstyle that is in transition and I know it requires my
patience but, sometimes ...
I am the kind of person who has the strength and confidence in who I am to know
that this is a transitory phase and it will get to the point where I will be
TOTALLY in love with my hair. Having the patience to get to that point is rough
sometimes though.
Shon, Jr. is 4 years old. He is my grand nephew. You're right. He is a real
cutie pie that loves to sit on my lap and talk to me while he plays with my
locks : )
Here's something really interesting to note: all the kids in my family under the
age of 7 LOVE my hair. I literally have to keep their hands out of it!! You know
at that age hand washing is not a priority until mom makes you : )
I'm still recovering from eye surgery but I'll have my niece come over and help
me take some current pictures this weekend. I usually take my film to Wal-Mart
and get them put on a high resolution CD. This seems to work better for me than
when I get the lower resolution 3.5" floppy or scan them myself (that's part of
the problem with the ones I just downloaded.) They also offer the option of
putting them on the internet for a small fee and they can be downloaded from
there.
I'll have to take some more after my next retightening on Jun 9th. I'm still
wishing for a digital camera : )

The pics from Dec 2, 2000 were taken 3.5 weeks after my initial locking

also. I'll have to take some current pics because my hair has grown quite a
bit since then.

what I wanted but didn't get. Mine are a bit larger on the front, sides and
larger still in the back. Wish I had them done like the pics I saw. They
look so beautifully uniform in size all over! They are truly Beautiful.
Kinda' makes me want to start over.
My initial locking session took 24.5 hours. I have 400+ locs. My
retightenings take from 3 - 5 hours depending on how many weeks between
retightenings.

Re: Pam's colored SL's

Okaaaayyyyy, you are the exact person I need to talk to! :-)
What type color (product) did you use on your SL's and have you had
any breakage? Did you use the permanent-type coloring or is it semi-
permanent? We had a discussion on coloring SL's a little while back,
and there was some good ideas for rinses and such. But, if you want
to "lighten" your SL's, there really wasn't any info on that. When
my consultant says my SL's are settled in, I plan to have them
colored... probably a lighter shade of red/auburn. So, supply some
more info, please.

30- Hours session

2008-02-15 13:05:56

This past holiday weekend, I put in Sisterlocks for a lady who has 7-
8 inches of all natural hair. We worked all three days. We did stop
to pray for our loved ones who are deceased and to eat our bar-b-
cue :) The reason it took 30 hours is because she has long hair, and
she wanted micro Sisterlocks. I put three pics in my folder in the
files section (Kim's Folder). There's so many pics in there, so just
look for the ones that say:
All done side view, All done back and side, and Carol.
Better yet, just look for the ones that were created today, May 29.
Have a nice day!

I saw the show, but it only looked like their mom had SL, not them.
I thought they both still had braids. I know my former natural hair
stylist was doing their hair last I knew. Yvonne is the one who
pretty much started SL in South Florida, but as far as I know, she's
not taking on any new clients (although she may have made an

Hey everybody!
Greetings and salutations,
I just joined the list and I love what I've seen of
your page and pics and all. I'm supposed to be
getting Sisterlocks in August. I got test locks and
all - I've even still got one of them. The others
fell out when I washed my hair and detangled it with
my fingers. :{
My greatest fear is that I will get my locks, make
this great hours/dough investment, and then run a comb
through my head and destroy them. :{ Has anyone ever
done this? That's asked hoping the answer is no; but,
if it's not, were they salvageable?
I have loads of questions. Like, how fast do they
grow? Did you all like them when they first got
started? How long did it take them to mature? I'm
doing this in an attempt to get my hair to grow, grow,
grow. I'm starting with a 'fro that touches my
shoulders and that's been natural all my life. But, I
want more. :} I'd love hair like Monica Geary's in
the Sisterlocks Calendar photo. Or, even better, like
Monica Geary's in the Homecoming pictures.
One more question: Does anybody else have Sisterlocks
and a very active lifestyle? I do Taekwondo several
times a week and have to wash my hair often. Does
this affect sisterlocks?
Thanks to everybody who reads this,
and have a good whatever-time-of-day-it-is.

Hi, Leighann,
My name is Dawn. I have been sisterlocked for one year, and
was natural for many years prior to that. I live in Manhattan. There
are several consultants in the 5 boroughs, but the two that I have
had the most experience with are Marcia Moore, my current
consultant, who is here in Manhattan and Khumura
Khumurasett(sp), who is my past consultant, who lives in
Brooklyn. Both are excellent. I switched to Marcia because she
lives about 1 block from me. E-mail me to get their telephone
numbers or you can call the home office.
If you want to see real , live sisterlocks, you can have a meeting
with me or any of the consultants. We all have sisterlocks, and
the consultants can also show you their porfolios and give you
more information about the technique. I also recommend that
you look at the various webvsites, (Sandy Field's and Pat
Hunley's come to mind) which giive a pretty good portrayal of the
sisterlocks journey.
Good Luck,

Your hair story sounds like mine. Our SLs are about the same age. I too
"thought" I had a gray halo but half of my head is gray in front. I too have 3
different colors but I think it's kind of unique. I'm going to wait until it
grows longer to see what it looks like then, although I have vowed to never
color again. I am really afraid that the lightening (I go lighter) will ruin the
texture of my locs. I am planning to update my website shortly (I'm beginning
to work on it this weekend) so you'll probably be able to see my gray. Are
there pics of you in the files???

Coming out of lurk mode: Home Girls

2008-02-07 22:52:32

Hi,
I too am from the St. Louis area. I grew up on Kennerly Ave off Sarah Street
near St. Matthew's Catholic Church. We moved from St. Louis in 1976. I went
to Beaumont High School. I try to get back there at least once a year
because I still have relatives in the city, Berkeley, Florissant, and Black
Jack areas. I live in Wisconsin now about an hour from Chicago, IL.
Although I have been Sisterlocked for 6 months, I didn't like the initial
look and sometimes now when I look in the mirror because of the unevenness
of the locking process. I LOVE the versatility they offer though. My hair
has several textures and some areas are almost mature while some areas look
like they did when I first got it done. I am at the stage where I don't have
to braid and band anymore but I do it anyway because I like the crinkly look
I get when it dries. Sometimes I roll it up on perm rods but when I spritz
it, it doesn't last as long. I like the fragrance of essentials oils but
they tend to irritate my scalp so I usually just spritz with distilled water
and put a fragranced oil on my fingertips and run it through my hair while
it's still wet. That seems to work best for me until I shampoo again.
I have been wearing scarves to cover my "halo" of gray hair. I have had gray
hair since I was 16 years old and have been coloring my hair since then. I
stopped perming my hair about 3 years ago but, I still colored it to cover
the gray. My consultant told me my hair texture is the kind that straightens
when it gets wet, colored or when oil is applied. When I got Sisterlocks, I
stopped coloring. I was amazed at how much gray hair I had and how it does
what it wants to do. It shouldn't have been a big surprise though because my
dad was fully gray at age 30. I guess because I always colored it I never
saw the "full" effect : ) I am waiting to get to the point where I can color
again - not out of vanity but because I don't like the 3 different colors I
have now : ( I also can't wait until I can cut the locks that still have
those curly q's on the ends. Some of my locs have "buds" on the end, some
are locking all the way with straight ends, and some have those curly q's.
I guess I'll stop rambling now. Just had to send a "shout out" to the home
girls from St. Louis and all the other list members who have given me
support and encouragement anonymously by sharing their journey. Returning to
lurk mode now : )

Re: Problem w/ Messages & Hair Update

2008-02-07 04:24:32

I don't think that it's just an AOL problem. I don't use AOL and I had
the same problem, so I did the same as you, switched to web only mode.
You shouldn't have a problem knowing which are the most recent. They're
posted in date/time order. Once you've read a post, the color of the
link changes so that you know you've read the message already. This is
only true if you read the e-mail messages from the same computer and/or
browser each time. If I read messages at work, then go home to log on,
I noticed that the links to the messages I read at work aren't a
different color. Also, I have Netscape navigator and Internet Explorer
on the same computer. If I log on with one, then the other, I notice
the same thing: the links aren't different colors. So as long as you're
reading the posts from the same computer/browser, you should be able to
distinguish between your read and unread messages. Hope this helps.

Re: [LockItUp] HARD TO GET STARTED TWISTING MY HAIR

2008-02-07 02:34:05

Lorraine,
I use Dark and Lovely Tea Tree Oil Loc and Twist
Butter for my twists. I find that it is not as drying
as gel. I guess it depends on where you live at it, it
is kind of difficult to find. The only place I found
it at was at an Ethnic Sallys Beauty Supply Store (I
thought all Sallys sold the same products, but they
don't).
Also I have trouble with the very front of my hair
staying twisted and I am all natural. My front is a
different texture than the rest of my hair. When I get
to the end of the twist I braid the end of my hair.
Does anyone have this problem?. When I twist my hair
and take it out in the morning it is not as krinkly as
I like. It may have something to do with my hair
texture or I'm making my twists too big. My hair is
thick and tightly curled
Can't wait to get sisterlocks!!. Twists are at lot of
work :-)

Re: [LockItUp] Problem w/ Messages & Hair Update

2008-02-06 19:45:00

Hey all,
Are any of you all having problems getting messages that use AOL? I noticed
that the messages are usually delivered to me out of sync, or I miss certain
topics, so I switched so that I could just read them on the email. The only
problem is that it's hard to know which are the most recent messages. I would
prefer to read all of the messages for a particular day. Last night, I
switched to digest format & today I noticed that it sent me quite a few old
messages, can someone Help me please!
On a more positive note, yesterday, I took the plunge & washed my hair. It
was kind of weird & I was trying so hard not to disturb the locks that I
don't think that I really shampooed it as well as I should have b/w the
bunches, so I will probably do it again in about a week, It will be just
before me retightening anyway, so that should work out well. All in all, it
came out nice though & I have been using the ACV as my final rinse, which
gives it a nice sheen. Afterwards I set it on rods as usu., but I think that
like Sandy, I prefer the look right after washing it. Next time I will
probably just let it hang & use the curling iron. I found a medium sized
curling iron yesterday & tried it on my bangs this morning, but it didn't
really do much, I guess b/c that part was already kind of curly from the
rods. Anyway, I know as time goes on, I will get the hang of it. Thanks to
all of you for your help, styling suggestions, etc., I would name names, but
I don't want to leave anyone out, so I will just say that I really appreciate
this group & all that it has done to help me further my natural hair path. I
just love ya'll & don't know how I could have made it on this journey w/out
ya:)

Re: HARD TO GET STARTED TWISTING MY HAIR

2008-02-06 10:14:42

I just use a little gel. The twists never come down. If your hair
is not all natural or if cut bluntly it may be difficult or if it is
not very kinky.
I put gel on my fingers, twist the hair and wind the ends around my
finger or braid the end. Yesterday I sat my daughter under the hair
dryer afterwards for the first time because we were going out and it
was cold. That helps also to set it.

Re: Taking Down Sample SisterLocks

2008-02-05 15:54:18

Both sample locks and mature SLs can be taken out. You simply unravel
them as though tbey were braids. With a mature lock, you'll probably
need a small needle or pin to pick them out. It's a long and tedious
process.

Taking Down Sample SisterLocks

2008-02-05 09:29:43

The SisterLocks that your consultant put in to show you how your hair
will look, how are they taken down, if you don't like it? If the
sample locks can be taken down, can the locks that have matured be
taken down as well?

Hey!!!!! Who are you??? I am from Omaha!!!!!!! I am soooo glad to see
Sisterlocks coming to the Big O. I am soooo tired of folks asking me are
there Black people in Nebraska?? Or do you grow corn in your back yard???
LOL!!! Where do you live? What church do you attend?? Maybe we should
talk about this off line!!! I am not sisterlocked yet but I plan to do
something soon. I have been natural since February 2001.

Sandy, have a wonderful time. Tell us all about all the folks who
approach you about your hair.
Gee, you make it sound too easy. All I have to do is volunteer to do
nothing??

Re: Finally had a Consultation : )

whole head done, but I have to wait nine weeks until I get back from
summer school.
I knew you would like your test SL's when you got them! Good for
you. You will no doubt be as fascinated as I was to see your whole
head done in what appears to be "teeny weeny locks." :-)
talked about when I was coming back from summer school and when we
would be free to do my whole head- and she said we can work out some
kind of payment plan - YEAH.
That is wonderful, Amina! See, things always work out when you keep
a positive attitude about yourself. And, don't feel self-conscious
about having to work out a payment schedule or not tipping your
consultant. She understands you are a student... sometimes people
offer to work out alternative payment arrangements because that is
their way of giving back... like when I do pro bono cases or
otherwise provide a free service. I don't want the recipient to feel
self-conscious about the "gift" or "help" because I'm giving it in
the spirit of sharing. So accept your consultant's "help" of working
out alternative arrangements. Then, at some time in the future when
you are doing financially better, pass that "gift" along to someone
else. :-)

Re: [LockItUp] Digest Number 367

2008-02-04 06:47:23

Sandy, Sigrid, Devon, Pam, Jennifer, and Kim (hope I didn't forget anyone).
Thank you all so much for your encouragement and support. You'll never know
how much better it made me feel. Today I'm standing a bit taller and feel a
lot less afraid to face people. I should be back to my old self in no
time--or maybe like my daughter says, I'll never be the same again. In any
event, I'm feeling better and you all helped immensely. Thanks again
I'm going to start a journal and my daughter's going to help me put together
a website so that I can chronicle my journey. Actually, we are all
journeying together, it's just that some of us are further along than others.
I'm glad for the ones that have gone before. It would be really lonely by
myself.
I will visit and contribute often - I'm so glad for this forum - It's
wonderful
Peace

Re: Why Daily Spritz

2008-02-04 01:56:49

only asking b/c I haven't been putting anything on it, but do you all
do it for moisture, shine, etc?
I spritz my SL's daily to get them wet. As Sandy pointed out, your
SL's love the water. I have always used water/tea tree oil spritz to
keep my scalp itch-free, and didn't stop when I got my SL's. Now,
though, I use a spritz of water/sandalwood EO because the smell is
something I really like. I spritz my SL every day or every two days
because I love the way they look when I do it (my nappy ends curl up
and look really nice).

Re: getting locked on the 31st

2008-02-03 12:13:27

Hi, Javelyn... congrats on your decision to get Sisterlocks! You
will be so glad you chose to get SL's once you have them. I know
it's always a downer when family members don't approve of what we do,
but people project negativity onto other because of their own
insecurities and not really because of anything you do (and this
includes family members). Perhaps they are feeling a little insecure
about their own choices and see your striving to be your own natural
self as something they secretely wish they could do. When I first
got braids, my perm-head-queen older sister talked about me like a
dog...(haa,haa,haa). Then, she got used to seeing me in them and got
to like them on me. When I first told her I was going to get my hair
Sisterlocked (I had been natural for 3 yrs and had 4-6 inches of
nappy hair), she though that would be awful. But, when she saw my
SL's, she really likes them and has even stopped using the creamy
crack on her own head... she now sports a TWA!
So, hang in there and come here to us whenever you need some positive
encouragement... we got lots of nappy-headed Sistah-love to share!

Finally had a Consultation : )

2008-02-03 09:28:54

[ I cannot believe that you guys are talking about tipping, because I just
got home and realized I did not tip my consultant today and soon as I
checked my email that is what you all were posting so I feel extra guilty
now. ]
Anyway, I met my consultant at about 2:30 and watched the two videos by Dr.
JC. Then we talked a little and she checked out my hair and put in eight
sample locks. We talked the whole time about hair and other stuff. I
checked my locks out in the mirror and I am so sure I want my whole head
done, but I have to wait nine weeks until I get back from summer school. My
consultant (her name is Toni George if anyone is in the DC/MD area and wants
to get Sisterlocks) was so understanding of my poor-black-college-student's
budget that she did not charge me. I insisted that I pay something, but she
told me not to worry and we talked about when I was coming back from summer
school and when we would be free to do my whole head- and she said we can
work out some kind of payment plan - YEAH. Anyway I feel so funny, because
I told her about LockItUp so she might be reading this.
Thanks for the info. guys, I might not have gone for a consultation if I did
not see your pictures and read your advice, options, and stories.

I'm going to New Orleans in the morning. Woo ho!
Would anyone like to volunteer to moderate the group until I get

anyone needs help with their subscription or something.

girls and they were driving me nuts about getting their hair straightened
and my mom even said something to me about getting off this natural sh..
and do something because their hair isn't growing. Her reasoning is that
it breaks off during combing because it is super curly, which may be true
but I know that a relaxer isn't the answer...I just relasped for a minute.<<
Try this herbal rinse after you wash their hair. It's HerbalMomma's
recipe, and it makes it easier to comb... almost like a detangler:
Combine equal amounts of horsetail, yarrow, nettle, and rosemary. Mix well
and store in an airtight container. To make the rinse, boil 2 cups of
water and add 2 tbsp of the herbal misture. Cover with a top and reduce
the heat. Simmer 5 to 10 minutes. You can use it right away or let it sit
overnight. Strain and use as your final rinse. Do not wash out.
I use it a different way. I heat 2 cups of water, and then put 2 tbsp of
the herbal mixture in a little muslin bag. I tied it into a handkerchief
before I got the muslin bag.. works the same way. Put the bag into the hot
water and let it steep while you wash your hair. When you're done washing,
the tea has steeped and cooled enough to use. Pour over the head, catching
the runoff in a bowl then pour it back over your head. Keep doing this
until all the rinse is gone. Do not wash out.
Feel free to vent any time. We understand the pressures from loved
ones. They're still in the dark, so to speak. Don't let the sway you from
the path you've chosen -- the right path for *you*.

getting locked on the 31st

2008-02-02 07:14:48

Hey ladies; I'm ususally pretty quiet, I think the last time I actually had
something to say I was still in Oceanside, CA. Now we are in Columbus, OH and
I'm feeling a little mixed about my upcoming transformation. Belive me though
it is something I really need just because I've been down on myself a bit of
late. So now I'm going to do this for me and not feel bad about taking 12 hours
away from the family or the bit o' money I'm spending...I'm sure in the long run
it''ll be worth it. (At least that's my mantra for the next week or so).
But boy did I slip I called my SL consultant and told her not only was I
thinking about relaxing my kids hair but actually went out and bought two just
for me relaxer kits. She managed to talk me down. What got me to that point?
I went home for Mother's Day and my Mom (God bless her) brainwashed my girls and
they were driving me nuts about getting their hair straightened and my mom even
said something to me about getting off this natural sh.. and do something
because their hair isn't growing. Her reasoning is that it breaks off during
combing because it is super curly, which may be true but I know that a relaxer
isn't the answer...I just relasped for a minute.
I think what bugs me is that my own family is so negative about my desision not
to put chemicals in my hair anymore (I've been natural for 3 years and have 4-5
inches of hair). My father even said that it is ignorant to wear what I call
freedom hair i.e. a large afro pulled back with a head band. My mom thinks I
should cut my hair and wear an ultra short afro (been there done that) if I
don't want chemicals in my hair. And granted I look good like that, I don't see
why I shouldn't be able to be comfortable or good looking with a big bow out
afro?
Anyway I'm rambling and I've got a killer headache...just needed to vent a bit
and give y'all an update on my SL journey.

Re: Tipping

2008-02-01 16:59:14

That is a good question. I did not tip anything when I first got my
locks because I did not have any money left.
I did not think about it with my retightenings either. Usually I
don't ask for my change back when I pay.
When I was going to the salon I followed a rule that I read that said
you don't tip the owner of the salon but you tip everyone else. So I
used to tip the shampoo girl and whoever else that did my hair if
they did not own the salon.
This is kind of different. So I would be interested in knowing what
other do also.

Re: [LockItUp] Tipping

2008-02-01 16:45:04

Since I get my Sisterlocks at Everette's which is a salon/school, I tip my
consultant. I give her $5 when I get a retightening. I never really
thought to calculate 15% or anything like that. After my first
retightening, they gave me change when I paid. There was a $5 bill in
there, so I just took it and gave it to my consultant. I've continued
giving her $5 since then.
Tipping didn't occur to me at all when I first got my Sisterlocks. First I
was flat broke and couldn't have tipped if I had wanted to. Second, we
were all so tired and busy celebrating and taking pictures and stuff that
it just never crossed my mind.

Tipping

2008-02-01 15:27:40

Hi, Everyone.
I was wondering what the people tip their consultants once they get
Sisterlocks. Considering the cost, and the standard of tipping 15 to 25%
this could get very expensive. Does this standard apply? What is the norm,
considering you are already spending humdreds of dollars on your hairstyle.

Help

2008-02-01 07:34:31

I forgot to mention something that may help Taurus.
We've been telling you that washing your hair helps it to thicken and
lock. This is true, but it's not the washing that helps it.... it's just
the water. I understand that many people are leery of washing their hair
when they first get Sisterlocks, and it's understandable because they don't
want to manipulate their locks or do anything to cause slippage.
But you can get it wet. Just stick your head under the shower, take your
time going in out of the rain, etc. This wouldn't take any manipulating of
the locks, your hair gets its dose of water (nappy hair loves water), and
you'll see your locks begin to thicken and form.
I've always washed my hair every two weeks from the very beginning. I
followed the directions to the letter and never had a problem. But not
everyone's hair is the same, so maybe frequent washing isn't for you.
But water won't hurt it. Get it wet!

I know exactly how you feel, just tell everyone what I said, I told
them this hairstyle is not an instant gratification hair style it is
a process that looks better as time goes on. I felt very self
conscious also the 1st day at work, I wanted to wear a wig also but I
refused to, this is who I am & I love me for me. I will have had my
SL for 6 months on june 3rd & everyone loves my hair, they have been
able to see the progress day by day. So don't worry everything will
work out fine.
Pam

excited because my daughter got sisterlocks about three months ago
and I loved them.
very thin and very short and I really thought I looked like a plucked
chicken. Seriously considered getting a wig but drove to the wig
store on Sunday and it was closed. In addition, temperatures were
90+ so I thought, I'd just better deal with it.
away from folks. Lots of folks noticed but no one said it looked
good. I bumped into one of my friends at lunch. Said to him "I was
trying not to bump into you" He looked at my head and said "I can
see why". I guess I should just consider the source.
my hair starts filling in? I do admit that today it looked better
than it did on Sunday. On Sunday, I had trouble looking in the
mirror but today (3 days later), it was better. I can actually see
what it will look like when it's grown in. My husband likes it--Says
I have the face for it. And, of course my sisterlocked daughter
loves it.
measure the change. I guess it will get better over time, huh? Is
there anyone out there who wasn't happy with their locs when they
first got them.?
