Hi Sandy,
How much did you pay for the re-tightening class???? I thought that
was $50.00 is that what you paid??? I know you are talking about
training classes for the consultants but I would like to get just the
re-tightening class so I can do my own hair.

Help for Taurus

2008-01-30 23:11:48

My hair is very thin and very short and I really thought
I looked like a plucked chicken. <<
Ahh ... we remember it well. Only Pat Hunley was able to
make a fashion statement of the "plucked-chicken" look!

locs when they first got them.?<<
Me, me! When I left my consultant at 4 AM, I had no
wash/style or a even a promise of a future wash/style.
I had nuthin' but a bunch of stringy braid-looking things
sticking out of my head and "See you in 2 weeks for your
follow-up!"
I quickly replaced my wig and went home and cried. Later
that morning, my sister and I spritzed and rolled up our locs
and we went to a restaurant and encouraged each other.
(Thank GOD for my sister!) During the next few weeks, we
would try ways to care/wear our baby Sisterlocks. We bought
perm rods and rose water for spritzing and curling. We
bought headbands and scarves also.
Vacation was scheduled the next week so I didn't run into
anyone at work. That gave me time to get my head together.
Pun intended.

As you've noticed, every day is an improvement. When your
locs settle and you are able to wash them without banding,
they will be much more appealing. Have you looked at Sandy's
and Pat's sites? If so, that should show you the progress of
2 ladies here. The time it takes depends on your hair
characteristics and your lifestyle.
Believe me, sister. You will really appreciate your locs
within 6 months and you will LOVE your locks in a year. It
just keeps getting better. Why do you think there are so many
of us talking about it on these lists? We get no compensation
but the acknowledgment from other sisters like us. No one
without these locs can understand how great we feel.

Locking Patterns???

2008-01-30 21:47:01

Can any one explain what is meant having your hair put into a locking
pattern?
I was reading Nekhena (forgive me if I misspelled her name) Evans' book and
she was talking about the different methods of locking hair. She said that
palming is the the most authentic, because although putting your hair in
tiny braids or twists and leaving them will get the result in the long run,
it skips the natural coil stage. I just was curious of how Sisterlocks
starts the locking process? (I know I go for my consultation tomorrow, but
I am dying to know).
-Amina
P.S. Pray my husband likes the sample locks, because he wants me to grow my
hair out and style it not get locks. ( I am trying to tell him my hair will
grow and can be styled in sisterlocks).

Re: Help

2008-01-30 18:46:14

That's because you haven't seen the end result.
It takes locks a long time to form and mature. Your hair has been placed
in a locking pattern, but it isn't locked. Be patient. You'll notice as
it changes week by week. The hair will begin to lock and thicken, and
you'll love each change you see.
I *know* I looked like a plucked chicken when I first got mine! Check out
my website. You'll see how my locks matured as time went by. I too
started with about 2 inches of natural hair and about 5 inches of permed hair.
My website it http://home.earthlink.net/~diamonique/lockitup/journey.html
And check my book nook. You can purchase JoAnne's book and learn about the
whole Sisterlocks process and the time and patience it takes for your hair
to mature into them.
Believe me it's worth it!
It'll fill in more with each washing. But be SURE you band and braid your
hair before you wash it, and don't scrub, just squeeze and press the
shampoo through your hair. You don't want to disturb or manipulate your
locks in this young stage.
I was happy with them because I knew how they'd look later. Truthfully it
wasn't a pretty sight when I first got them. But it didn't bother me
because I was prepared.
You came to the right place for encouragement. We've all been there, and
believe me Sisterlocks are worth it!

Re: [LockItUp] Digest Number 366

2008-01-30 05:44:04

Topic: Help
I just got my sisterlocks this past Saturday. I'd waited almost three months
while my relaxer grew out and thought anything would look better than what was
on the top of my head at that point. I was excited because my daughter got
sisterlocks about three months ago and I loved them.
She encouraged me to do the same and since I was really tired of the relaxer
treadmill, I decided to take the plunge.
I was not a happy camper when I saw the end result. My hair is very thin and
very short and I really thought I looked like a plucked chicken. Seriously
considered getting a wig but drove to the wig store on Sunday and it was closed.
In addition, temperatures were 90+ so I thought, I'd just better deal with it.
The first day at work was traumatic. I tried to stay in my office away from
folks. Lots of folks noticed but no one said it looked good. I bumped into one
of my friends at lunch. Said to him "I was trying not to bump into you" He
looked at my head and said "I can see why". I guess I should just consider the
source.
So, why am I writing? For encouragement. Any idea how long before my hair
starts filling in? I do admit that today it looked better than it did on
Sunday. On Sunday, I had trouble looking in the mirror but today (3 days
later), it was better. I can actually see what it will look like when it's
grown in. My husband likes it--Says I have the face for it. And, of course my
sisterlocked daughter loves it.
I'm going to take pictures at weekly intervals so that I can measure the change.
I guess it will get better over time, huh? Is there anyone out there who wasn't
happy with their locs when they first got them.?

Training Prices

2008-01-30 01:04:45

Can someone tell me who sets the fee for consultant training? Ever
since I had my locks put in I have been interested in taking the
consultant training course. At first I was told that the course was
$600. Now I have been informed that it has gone up to $800. Is this
standard? If not would some of the consultant trainers email me and
let me know what they would charge me for the training. I would be
willing to travel if it would cut down on the cost.
Thank you

Re: [LockItUp] Training Prices

2008-01-29 23:04:22

Here at Everettes in Detroit it recently went up from $650 to $700. I was
told that the Home Office incurred an increase in what they have to pay for
the training supplies/books/whatever, and they passed that increase along
to the trainers. That's normal. But Everette's increased it's fee for
consultant training by $50, not $200.
I guess each trainer sets their own prices.

Sandy, I don't use an EO, but I still want to share. I scoop out some

really good, and spritz that on my hair each morning. I like this
better than just applying the moisture treatment to my hands because
then I have to rub forever to rub it all in.

Thank you Tracy-
I hope everyone had a good time.
For those of you who were not in attendance-
We had a great turnout yesterday (at least 30 people) for our Simply
Natural-Hair Day-by the Bay!
We 4 hair specialists on hand to answer questions. A Loctician, a natural hair
cosmetologist and 2 Certified Sisterlock Consultants (including the Bay Area
trainer).
The sisters looked so beautiful, I almost had tears in my eyes. I don't
think....no.....I know I have never been in a room with that many nappy heads in
my life!!! The energy was powerful.
Everyone mingled, asked questions, did a little hair, looked at the hair books
and listened attentively as each of the hair specialists gave us a little
schooling about "our hair"!
One sister stood up and read us 2 beautiful poems she had written, that I think
we all related to. We enjoyed food, wine and bubbly and bought T-shirts,
jewelry, candles, custom dolls and clothes.
The energy was awesome. It was truly an enjoyable day!

Thanks for sharing, Sigrid!
I forwarded this inspirational message to my mom. She's has finally
embraced her natural hair and has been so for a year now. She's looking for
something different. She lives in the south and can't deal with a press n
curl, because of the heat, humidity, and she sweats too much in her head. I
mentioned Sisterlocks! I told her I'd do them for her, but she's hesitant.
When she's ready, I'm here. Maybe your mom's story will help her to decide!

Freedom for Mom!

2008-01-26 07:54:57

After over 20 years of wearing every kind of wig you can
imagine, my mother has shed her wig and is sporting her
salt and pepper (mostly salt) 4-7 inch Sisterlocks!
In November, my niece and I put Sisterlocks in her 100%
natural hair. She wore them under her wig until this week
when she broke loose. In the last 6 months, her locs have
matured, thickened, and stopped breaking from
comb/brush/wig trauma. She took off the wig and wore them
to church! Since she is the only black in a little church
in a little town of Greeley,Colorado, she got nothing but
kudos. She is so happy and so am I.
Mom was a Registered Nurse for 40 years and did wear an
afro briefly in the 60s. She told both my sister and I that
she thinks these locks are wonderful and wishes that they
were available to her before her hair started thinning with
age. The only thing sad thing about this is that Dad, who
died 4.5 months ago, never got to see her this way. He
really liked my sister's and my locs so I think he would
have responded well to hers.
Mom is 75 so this is major, IMO. I am very, very proud of
her and will post a picture if I can. Is she setting the
record here or does anyone else know of another senior
citizen who has broken the chains of assimilation and
embraced her natural hair texture like this?

3rd Nappy Anniversary - Dallas

2008-01-24 11:29:44

I went to the ANHA "Nappy Anniversary" yesterday and it was just too
much! I have not felt such love, respect, and acceptance from a
group of Black folks in a very long time! Everyone was so positive
and welcoming and free... and not just their hair! ANHA founder
Linda Jones (a/k/a Mosetta) was wonderful... what a loving, goddess
mother she is. There was plenty of good food and fellowship for
all. Both women and men attended, and the young people there was too
cute. There were several Black vendors there selling their wares,
and local radio personality from one of the Oldies stations (forgot
his name but he was a really good-looking brother), and two wonderful
singers who provided soulful entertainment. I could not believe all
the activity going on at the same time, and Mosetta was right in the
middle of all the happenings, poised and graceful.
I saw many people there with traditional locks, twists, cornrows and
other braided styles, and afros. I got the see the difference
between groomed locks and free-form locks, and also a style
called "Lady Locs" which appeared to me like traditional locks only
smaller (but not as small as Sisterlocks). Many people came prepared
to "get their hair did" and were matched up with those willing to do
the doing. It was great fun to watch all those nappies getting their
hair done. I took lots of pictures of all those wonderful folks and
will post them (or send them to Sandy if I can't figure out how to
post them) as soon as they are developed. And, I didn't manage to
get someone to take a pic of me so you could see my SL's. Everyone
asked what type locks I had, and when I told them they were all very
interested to know the scoop, i.e. what were they, how they are done,
where I got them, how much they cost, etc. Everyone said "Oh, those
are crocheted, right?" I was surprised by this... but I think I
explained what I know enough that they got the idea. Anyway,
everyone wanted to "feel" my SL's and look all through my head... it
was great! I got so many compliments on my SL's and how everyone
liked the way they curl up at the ends. I felt great!
Well, sorry for such a long message, but I'm still "high" from all
the Sistah and Brother love I felt from everyone yesterday. Oh, one
more thing, though...I wrote down the website for this group, ANHA,
Sisterlocks Home Office, and Sandy's website so much that I'm
thinking maybe I will print up those websites on business cards and
just pass them out to people to get more information. Would anyone
have any objections to that? If so, let me know... if not, I'm going
to print them up next week. I'll post pics as soon as I can...

Re: excited and scared

2008-01-24 09:38:29

Hi, Jill and congrats on your decision to get Sisterlocks! I had
many noticeable parts (and still do when I get my retightenings...I
like my SL's tight down to the scalp) I think mainly because my hair
is not really thick and it's soft/fuzzy/nappy. But, I'm getting used
to the look (of the partings) and even when I get it retightened the
partings are not as noticeable as when they were first done.
As far as dying hair goes, my SL consultant told me that putting
color on my hair before I got SL's would not be a problem as long as
my hair was healthy. I had some blondie-red coloring on my natural,
chemical-free hair that I did not want to have when I got my hair
locked. About two days prior to my session, I colored it dark auburn
and my SL's look fine. You cannot color your hair after SL's until
it is mature, and even then there are some products you should not
use (according to my consultant). When my SL's are mature enough, my
consultant is going to color them for me because I do like a red hue
on my hair. Good luck! :-)

Re: [LockItUp] excited and scared

I think it has to do with the texture. My hair is thick, but the texture
is kinda straight... more wavy than kinky. I had lots of noticeable
parts. There's a link on my site that takes you to Susan's site where she
has pictures from when she first got her Sisterlocks. Her hair is thick and
very kinky/nappy, and there aren't any parts showing at all. Check her out

Hello Ladies,
I have enjoyed your posts over the past few months. I
have learned a lot of useful information. I have been
natural for over a year. During my transition I have
worn braids off and on,mostly on. I also got tired of
frying my hair and the breakage. When I discovered
sisterlocks,I knew that this was what I have been
looking for. Over the past month I have been wearing
my hair in the two strand twists. I am not pleased
with the results. My hair is thick and course. It looks
like a straight up afro.(No dis to the sistas with
afros). I finally found a consultant in Charlotte.
Many of you may be familiar with Moyosafi. Her prices
are up there, but from talking to her and her
knowledgeable background I feel she is worth it. So
now I am saving my $ and have scheduled an appointment
for the end of July!!
Two questions. The parts thing- Will the parts be less
noticeable since my hair is natural or does it have to
do with the thickness of the hair? I really want to
dye my hair before getting sisterlocks do you think
this is wise?

Sigrid, what a wonderful thing to share. I had a client who told me
three different times that she did not have a relaxer. I kept assuming
that she did because of her hair texture. I'm sure that if she had to
tell me three times, she's probably had to say it many, many times to
others. Thanks for sharing. It reminds us that our hair comes in all
textures, just as our skin color comes in all hues.

Thanks Sigrid. I must confess that I thought CC's hair was permed on the

if I saw her hair in person I could see it more clearly and see that it's
natural.
Lynda asked the question, but I was also thinking the same and would have
asked eventually... and no offense is meant by it. I really don't think CC
took offense to the question, but just in case.
Sigrid I know where you're coming from when you say folks look for reasons
to slam Sisterlocks. You and I have been through at least a couple of those
'discussions' together on other email groups, and I'm sure you've seen more
of them than me because you've been involved in these groups longer than I
have.
And... considering that my memory is only about 2 inches long nowadays...
the next time CC posts a picture I might be the one asking if her ends are

My daughter, Miss Page, is 11 years old. There are a couple of pics of her

some recent photos of her in there.
I know! I guess I never thought I'd be coming up on my five year
Nappyversary and still have people ask if I still have perm on my ends. My
hair has been cut so much since then, that there is absolutely no way there
is any perm left! But when people ask all the time, it makes me wonder why
my hair is not as "nappy" as I was told it was growing up (well before I
became a permed head). Then I ask myself, "is there any perm left?" There
is no way, I've cut at least two full heads of hair!
Absolutely! I have had my entire head done before. This time, I opted for
just the front, so I would be able to sleep comfortably.

Better braiding/banding

2008-01-21 11:26:56

I'm getting better with my braiding and banding ritual... I actually
shampooed my hair this morning and it only took me 35 minutes to
braid and band this time (I'm getting more nimble-fingered every
day!). Since my hair is growing quickly, the shorter SL's in the top-
back were much easier to gather in.
Now, I'm off the the ANHA Nappy Anniversary downtown. I purchased

so I can take pics myself to share. Have a good day, everyone... :-)

daughter was Sisterlocked February 18, 2001, and she LOVES her locks
too! I'm using the color to help me gage the growth of my locks.
Thanks for the history, CC... I'm always curious about why people
went to SL's. Now that I know your color history... Wow, your hair
has really grown! I put some dark auburn on my hair (to tone down
some blondie-red stuff I used monthly earlier) right before I got my
SL's put in and I can't believe how much of my "natural-colored" hair
is showing in each lock. I love Sisterlocks!

Consultation Questions to Ask

2008-01-20 16:41:26

Does anyone have a list of questions they used during their
consultation? I can think of some questions myself but I want to get
as much information as possible. Thanks!

Re: [LockItUp] CC's pics...-LONG

2008-01-20 15:24:10

My ends are still colored. I'm not sure if the camera flashed to show the
color, but my ends are colored all over.
A little history, I decided to go natural in August 1996. In February 1997,
I cut all the relaxer and color off my hair to about an inch of hair. I
will search for pictures and scan them to show my hair journey to
Sisterlocks! I just wanted to see how long and healthy my hair could be.
It grew and grew and grew! At the time I was living in California. I wore
the little two strand twists until it became too long and ends were too
straight to wear like that. Because of the texture of my hair, the longer
my hair got the straighter my ends! That's why every time someone sees my
Sisterlocks they ask if my ends are permed. So not permed! I began wearing
cornrow/frenchbraids in the front with individual braids in the back. As it
got longer I just wore it in about four-six frenchbraids/cornrows to the
back. The problem, mostly, I moved to Milwaukee where there were virtually
no beauty salons for natural hair. If a beautician did natural hair, it was
a short natural. I had a head full of hair! So, last year, it was either
cut it or color, because I wanted something different. I chose the color.
Because my hair was natural and so thick the color had to stay on alot
longer. I never really achieved the color I wanted, which was a Chestnut or
Honey blonde. Just before I moved to NY, I found a stylist that could press
my hair as straight as I wanted it. She also did the color block for my
which is the blonde you see in the front. All she did was bleach a front
block of my hair and left it. I had a long bob and when it was parted down
the middle the blonde color framed my face.
Fast forward, I'm here in NY, found a stylist I really vibed with. This
sister has the blonde color hair I want and she wears it in a Natural, which
is how I really want to wear my hair. My hair didn't work like that. I
would only frizz up and look dry, I couldn't get the little ringlet curls
that she had. During the course of this past year, my hair started breaking
off badly from the color. I was trimming at least an inch off everytime I
got it braided or pressed. In January 2001, I was sitting in Marilyn's hair
trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my hair for my cruise in
April. I knew it would be hot, so a press was out. I didn't really want to
have to fuss with my hair, so I couldn't come up with any viable styling
options. I had about two inches of the color chopped off, with about an
inch of color left (give or take) to cut on my head. It was at that moment
that I became aware that I wanted to lock my hair. I did research and
decided I wanted Sisterlocks. Since I was locking there was no need to cut
the rest of the color off my head. Maryln didn't do Sisterlocks, so I
called the home office and they gave me a referral. I was Sisterlocked on
February 12, 2001. And, I LOVE IT! My daughter was Sisterlocked February
18, 2001, and she LOVES her locks too!
Now, I'm just watching it grow and mature. I'm using the color to help me
gage the growth of my locks. Since February, Marilyn has also decided to be
trained in the Sisterlocks tradition. She's taking a course offered by the
home office in Atlanta in June. By the time I'm do for my next
retightening, my stylist will do it for me. I'm so excited for her and a
whole lot of sisters here in the White Plains, NY area that will become
Sisterlocked!!

Your bantu knots look great! I didn't realize a person could still
style their hair in knots when they had SL's, but I see you can. I'm
thinking the copper-colored ends are tucked in there, but your before
pic showed the copper-colored ends even in the back. But your back
view doesn't show any of the colored ends. Did you cut them off or
were they only in the front? Just curious... :-)

Did you check the archives for the "unofficial" listing of SL's
consultants?
I echo Sandy's comments in that you should write your questions out
beforehand (I did) and take that with you. Also, the Day Spa I went
to provided the official 3-package visit pricing and all the products
(starter kit, instructions, etc.), but there are some consultants who
don't provide all the shampoo and little rubber bands and
instructions that you might need. So, ask lot and lots of questions
about what they provide.
Good luck!

Missy, I have the same things happening with my SL's. I don't wear a
part, but my SL's part when I spritz them and fall into my right
eye. My consultant retightens my hair in a "straight back" pattern,
with the sides pointing down and the top pointing to the back.
Nonetheless, my SL's part on the left and fall to the right! They
must be trying to tell me something... :-)

Re: Advice for a broke sister trying to get Sisterlocks?

NO!
I say "Lay Away".
I paid some money on my Sisterlocks at the consultation because I was
sure that I wanted them. I paid the rest when I got locked up. So I
had over a months time to pay for them.
I am using my income tax return to pay for the training.

Re: [LockItUp] Advice for a broke sister trying to get Sisterlocks?

2008-01-18 17:26:35

It's definitely worth it.
See if your consultant will let you 'lay away' your Sisterlocks. Pay on it
every month until you've paid the full fee, then get your SL done. Or just
save it up and pay the whole thing. It'll take a few months, but it's
worth the wait.
Because I had recently relaxed my hair, I had to wait a few months before I
could get my SL. During that time I saved up for them.
As for retightenings, you didn't mention how much they charge for
that. Some people charge for retightenings by the hour and some charge a
flat rate.
Remember that once your hair is sufficiently locked you'll be able to take
the retightening class ($75.00) and handle your retightenings
yourself. That'll be a big load off the budget.
But until that time you will need to see your consultant every 6 - 8 weeks
and pay whatever her retightening fee is.
My advice: Save up and do it. However, if you can't see you way clear to
paying for the retightenings for 6 - 8 months or so.. don't do it. Make
sure you can handle all of it (locking session & retightenings), or you'll
just be wasting your money.

Re: [LockItUp] Finally, I am getting lock'd up

2008-01-18 14:47:24

Woo hoo!
Be sure and ask questions. All the questions you have on your mind. Write
them down beforehand if you have to. Watch the video and pay
attention. Check out the Sisterlocks 3-visit package in our files area and
make sure you're getting what you're supposed to be getting. Find out if
you'll be getting the start kit and if you'll be able to purchase the
starter shampoo from her... questions like that.
The vast majority of SL consultants follow Joanne's "Sisterlocks approach"
to the letter (it makes for good business and happy customers), but there
have been some that tend to deviate just a bit. So just make sure you know
up front everything that you're getting and everything that's expected of
you so there'll be no surprises down the road.
And keep us posted!

Advice for a broke sister trying to get Sisterlocks?

2008-01-18 14:38:18

Bismillah
I have 7 - 8 inches of hair (I think). I just found out from one consultant
that her Sisterlocks' package is $495, but after 5 inches of hair it's $100
an inch, so I could spend $800 dollars! Another consulatant is at the
trainee stage, so she charges something like $375 for 12hrs (average time
for 4-5 inches) and then $30 each additional hour. I am still going to the
trainee for the consulation, but I don't know I am a full time college
student, so I barely make $495 a month. My hair is a mess, I stopped
pressing it 2 years ago and chopped all off, I finally grew to its present
length and I just let it stay curly, kinky, and tangled under my head wrap.
It is either a perm or Sisterlocks and I personally feel if God wanted me to
have straight hair he would have given it to me, so I decided against
chemically burning my hair straight so Sisterlocks it is. Am I the only
broke one in this group? How did you all get over the prices? I need to
hear that I am not out of my mind - that Sisterlocks are worth every penny.

top 3 things

2008-01-18 09:31:22

I have a change in my top 3 things:
First off my hair is not long nor short its at a stage
it doesn't curl the way it usta. Tight and in almost
Bantu knots.
Its not long enough to put in a french roll or a bun,
but its too long to look curly....ARGH!
The front continues to separate in the middle like I
have a part, its driving me crazy this week. Last
night I rolled it adding a little 100% pure Aloe vera
gel to the ends. Today it look good it hasn't
separated yet...lol
I don't like this part, and the funny thing is Sharon
doesn't retighten my hair using that pattern.
I guess my hair once again is on its own...lol
or here's is my payback for all the burning, frying
and drying I did to it.

My hair is at that length where I cannot do a lot to it. It is
neither long or short.
It is very hot here and the locks on my neck kind of bother me. It is
too short to put it up.(Thank you God,I am not complaining) :)
Still, having said that I really like my hair today. It has that kind
of wavy bob look that I used to sit hours to get when I had the wave
newvou.(spelling?) I have a picture of myself with that wave
whatever. I have to post it one day.
The best thing is that I have that same look now but my hair is all
natural. It is still wavy from my shampoo, braid, air dry and unbraid
weekly routine. I will be doing it all over tomorrow as it is my
swim class day. Hopefully with practice I can do it so it won't take
a whole week to look this good.

Pregnancy and hair loss afterwards

Sorry I haven't written in a while. I've taken some time out to read the
archives. So many messages, but such wonderful information. I feel like I
know you all a little better. It's been a treat to follow your journeys.
The only consultant close is three hours away. Still struggling on if it
would be best for me to wait. (It'll be four years before we move from
Clarksville, TN) :-( So I'm even considering going with trads. But I
REALLY would perfer SLs.
I'm curious about anyone's experience with their hair in locs and pregnancy.
I'm currently egg-nant with my second (I have a one and a half year old
daughter). Last pregnancy, I seemed to loose so much hair. I know it is
because your body produces a hormone that halts the daily shedding of hair,
and when you are done with child bearing, the hair that would have come out,
comes out. How will that effect my locs/SL if I get them done while
pregnant??
Oh by the way, someone aksed me how long I've been growing my hair. I've
been natural since '93 but I had one perm relapse in 98. So this length is
since then after cutting out the permed sections. And it takes about 45 to
twist myself. :( Thanks guys. You're beautiful!!

french roll and your hair length(s) sounds a bit like mine, I may have a
suggestion. After I got the perm cut off the top, I can no longer pull
mine back either.
Hi Sandy. I can't do a french roll to save my life. Couldn't do it before
I had locks. Damn sure can't do it now. My hair ranges from 4.5 to 7.5
inches.
Um... since you said puffs, I'm assuming your hair isn't locked. Can you
do a french roll in the back and a twist-out in the top? Maybe you can wet
the top, twist it into bantu knots, dry it, and take the knots down and
have a twist-out/curly look in the top.I may be *totally* off base here,
though.

Ha! Yes, you are totally off base, but I know you mean well. :-) I am
well locked-it was 2 years this past march. I said puffs because my locks

hair up. I know my styling options will increase as my hair grows longer. I
am trying to be patient...

Re: By The Way...

2008-01-12 08:09:26

I, in no way meant to imply that my hair would be locked at six
months. My consultant told me for my hair texture it would take
anywhere from six to nine months for my hair to lock. So, I'm
eagerly looking forward to August, however, I know that my entire
head won't be locked at that time, because the locks in the front of
my head still appear as little braids, thin and not mature at all. I
can definitely see a difference and fell a difference in my locks in
the back. Of course, the texture of my hair in the back is a tighter
curl pattern, so I expect that to lock first.
I just didn't want to confuse anyone by saying my hair would/should
be locked at six months.

Devon, I started with 5-6 inches of chemical-free hair, and once I

Lint will get trapped in your SL if you are not consistent in

Do wash your locks and follow your consultants advice.
With traditional locks the locking aid and twisting help to trap lint

groomed regularly this seems to minumize the dirt and lint.

Re: spritzing hair and thickening locks

Hi Sandy,
I was spritzing with plain water. I might have been using too much of
it. Another thing that I would do at times instead of spritzing was
taking a shower without a shower cap, thinking that this would be
like spritzing. I was much better off when I jettisoned the 2
practices. But again, the problem was just with my type of hair, not
the spritzing.

I told her I wanted to get locks and she said that they were dirty, I told
her they are only dirty if you do not take care of them and clean them. She
said no matter how much you clean them if you were to ever come them out or
cut on in half you would see the dirt that is trapped inside. Now I have
read a lot on locks but I am not sure of this- if anyone has more knowledge
about locks can you tell me how true this is?

Re: Revisiting the Lint problem

2008-01-09 03:58:53

CC,
Most of my clients have some level of lint in the back. I'm sure it's
from sweat. With most people, that's the part of our heads that naps up
the quickest and it's where the sweat gathers. The lint gets stuck.
Just be sure to spend more time in that section when washing your hair.
Rub and squeeze each lock in the linty section.

spritzing hair and thickening locks

2008-01-09 02:14:56

Hi everybody:
This is Dawn, decloaking for a moment or so. There have been a couple
of posts about spritzing your locks. I just want to give a fair
warning-whether your hair responds to spritzing by continuing to lock
or just slipping is a matter of hair type. I am one of those folks
with 2-3 different curl patterns on my head. The back and sides-very
short curl pattern (nappy, nappy about 85 to 90% shrinkage when wet)
or 4c or 4d if there is a 4d. I did everything wrong-not banding, not
using the starter shampoo, deep conditioning my hair, etc and the
hair in the back and sides locked in about 3-4 months with very
minimal slippage. My consultant at the time was amazed. The top and
nape is a medium to long curl pattern -I'd say 2b to 4a depending on
the area. I had to be very careful. I corrected my mistakes, did
everything right, spritzed with water and my hair still slipped like
crazy. My retightening sessions were running about 6+ hours with the
repair work and all. I stopped spritzing, and the slippage stopped. I
think Sigrid posted a similar story concerning slippage and spritzing.
Now I am SL'ed 11 and 1/2 months. I just stopped braiding and banding
1 month ago. My hair looks great, I am having lots of fun with it.
Sorry this post is so long-I guess I'll re-cloak again!

How did it lather? How did it smell? Did it leave the hair moist, or did
it feel stripped of all its moisture?
And if you figure out which one it was, put a note about it in the 'product
review' section of the ANHA email group website. Those reviews are very
helpful.

Re: [LockItUp] By The Way...

Congratulations, CC!
Just a reminder to everyone... at six months my consultant told me that my
hair had locked sufficiently (not completely locked... but enough) so that
I didn't need to braid & band my hair anymore when I wash it.
That doesn't mean that everyone's hair will reach that point at six
months. Some may be sooner... some may take longer. It depends on your
specific hair type, how your SL have been maintained, etc.
I just didn't want everyone to think that six months is the magic time
period... cuz it's not.
And ya know what? I still have a few locks here and there in the top that
feel exactly the same way they felt when they were first put in. They
don't feel as if they've locked at all.

Take special notice of your clothing/coats/sweaters/jackets, etc. If you
have anything that has lint-making material at the collar area, either stop
wearing it, or wear it with a satin scarf at the neck so the linty material
doesn't get to your nape area. Also look at your bed linens... blankets,
cotton sheets & pillowcases. What about the material your furniture is
made of? Your couches, chairs, etc. These can have lint too.

Revisiting the Lint problem

2008-01-07 04:03:45

Hey Ladies,
I'm having problems with lint in my back locks. I have ordered the lint
picks, but I haven't received them, yet, and I'm really not quite sure how
to proceed, with it being in the back of my head and all. I have a
retightening session scheduled for Wednesday...I'm sure my consultant will
be able to help.
For future reference, what can I do to cut down in this ever happening
again? I use the lint-free turbie twist thing, after washing my hair and
it's been awhile since wearing any sweaters. I really don't know how the
lint got there. I wash my hair weekly, so I'm stumped. Can anyone offer
any help and/or suggestions?

Short in Top/Longer in Back

2008-01-07 02:26:06

I'm not one for hair-styling suggestions, but since I just did my first
french roll and your hair length(s) sounds a bit like mine, I may have a
suggestion. After I got the perm cut off the top, I can no longer pull
mine back either.
Um... since you said puffs, I'm assuming your hair isn't locked. Can you
do a french roll in the back and a twist-out in the top? Maybe you can wet
the top, twist it into bantu knots, dry it, and take the knots down and
have a twist-out/curly look in the top.
I may be *totally* off base here, though.

2008-01-04 05:08:09

I did feel like I was getting some strange looks but it may have just
been my imagination because I actually started to feel odd like I
should have a cap also. I started wondering if it was one of those
pools where you have to wear a cap if your hair is past your ears
since everyone else had a cap. The instructors did not say anything
so I decided to just relax and enjoy myself.
I have been meaning to ask you all about that. When you separate the
locks are you able to do it without breaking the hair. I try to
separate gently so that the hair doesn't break but every once in a
while I hear it snap. Sometimes it is difficult to get them apart.
I really need a retightening. I think it has been 7 weeks since the
last one. I usually go 8 but seems to have more growth this time.
My consultant is busy but nice enough to fit me in very early on
Sunday so that we still have our Mothers day. Otherwise I would have
to wait a really long time or have to go elsewhere.

Re: [LockItUp] What about New Growth?

2008-01-01 14:47:33

Your consultant locks it. That's what the retightening sessions are for --
to take care of the new growth. You will go to have your new growth locked
(retightened) every six to 8 weeks. Your first retightening will probably
be about 3 or 4 weeks after you first get it done.
After a few months (the actual length of time depends on how quickly your
hair locks) you will be able to take the retightening class and learn to
take care of the new growth yourself if you want.
This is another question that will be covered during your consultation, and
make sure you ask how much she charges for retightening.
Not unless you want to. :-) I took the retightening class in March and
I've been doing it myself since then. But I plan to go to my consultant
later this month just to look it over and make sure I'm not messing
anything up. I figure I'll do most of the retightening myself from now on,
but I'll go to my consultant at least a couple of times a year and have her
do it.
Ask lots of questions and pay close attention to the answers. Make sure
you know exactly what to expect during your journey and how to care for
your hair. The two of you -- the consultant and you -- are a team. It
takes both of you to be on the same wavelength. Develop a rapport with
her, let her know any fears or apprehensions you have so she can address them.
Ask questions. Oh... did I say that already?
-- Sandy

Re: [LockItUp] I think I am Ready to get SL'd

2008-01-01 14:06:09

Have no fear. They won't be too small. Remember they can be quiet skinny
at first (depending on hair type), but they will thicken up as part of the
locking process. If the consultant makes them thick now... they'll be too
big and bulky when they thicken up. So if they teeny weeny when they're
first done, don't panic, OK? :-)
The way you care for them will determine this. Follow your instructions to
the letter, and stick with this email group. We can answer questions about
moisture/dryness/etc. and give you suggestions on combatting dryiness
during the early stages when you aren't supposed to use any oils on your hair.
Print the 3-Visit Package info that's in our files area and take it with
you. Write down your questions ahead of time so you make sure you get all
of your issues and answers taken care of and out of the way. Your
consultation should be thorough enough that when you go on the day to get
your SLs done, you will have absolutely no apprehension or worries...
you'll just be looking forward to your new freedom!
Well.. it depends on the thickness of the hair. One person's 8 inches
might take longer than another person's 8 inches because one of thicker
than the other. Plus, you're working with a new consultant, and she'll
probably take longer. This isn't a bad thing, mind you. She's new and
she'll be very very careful to do every little thing exactly right.
:-) Figure she'll be in your head for two day... give or take a few hours
each day.
Keep us posted, Aminah!! And take a camera with you!
-- Sandy

What about New Growth?

2008-01-01 06:09:13

When you have Sisterlocks does the new growth naturally lock up over time or
do you have to have your consultant (or yourself if you know how) to
actually lock it. Twenty years from now will I still have to go to my
consultant every 4-6 weeks or spend hours myself locking the new growth?
And does any one have any words of advice for me before I have my
consultation and I start my journey?
-Amina
