Locked, stocking and smoking...

2007-11-30 01:56:34

Ladies,
I've done it! I am now an officially sisterlocked woman!
I got them done in Miami when I went home recently and I just love
them. I loved them straight off. Perhaps it was because i had about
five inches of natural hair to start with, but I didn't feel or look
like a plucked chicken or any of that. My hair looks fab, feels fab
and is fab! Can't tell you how many women have asked me about my
hair!!!
As you may remember I was doing a story about African American women
and their hair for the BBC in the UK. Well, I finished the story and
turned it in. Now it's a matter of waiting to hear if they like it or
not. teh least it will run locally on the radio. But the best part of
all is that I attended this fantastic event called "A Happy Nappy
Hair Day" in Dallas. If you ever get a chance to go to one GO! It was
a fantastic mix of gossip, stories, music, and hair care. Absolutely
empowering!
I know, you want pictures. Well, got me a little cheapie digital and
as soon as I figure out how to work that baby, I'll put some on line.
Couple newbie questions:
1. I've been spritzing my hair with tea-tree oil and water
combination to keep my scalp from itching too much. I haven't noticed
much slippage. is this alright?
2. How soon should I do my retightening? I'm thinking in a few weeks,
which will be about a month after first havnig them done?
3. When you wash your hair the first time, do you have to braid AND
band or can you just tuck the ends and band?
thanks for you helpful advice.
Kaylois

In addition to what Kim said, you have the memories
inside of you and when you speak them i feel like I
was right there...thanks for that.

Re: [LockItUp] Digest Number 335

In a message dated 4/30/01 3:49:57 AM Central Daylight Time,

Unhappy with Consultant

2007-11-29 13:20:39

Call the home office and let them know of your experience. If she's a new
consultant, she may simply need a little reminding from the home office as
to how the Sisterlocks package is supposed to be sold and serviced. Also,
she may be having trouble getting the starter kit from her trainer... maybe
they're out of it or something. As to the sizes... I'm not sure about that
cuz I don't know what you wanted vs. what you got. But keep in mind that
the size of the locks will change as they mature. They will thicken
up. So if you think they're too small, just give it time. You may find
that she put the in right size after all.
In any case, I'm a true believer in people letting the home office know
when they're happy *and* when they're not happy.
Plus, the main thing is that you need that starter shampoo
*immediately*. So give them a call right now and get that shampoo.

Sandy,
Please don't let this disappointment set you back emotionally.
You just had a fabulous time at the convention -- remember that
and keep that good feeling.
All things work together for good. Pat has some pictures to
share with us.
Keep smiling and remembering how wonderful it was to be in a
place with a bunch of sisters who looked and felt beautiful!
Let that good feeling take you to the cruise in October.

AAARRRGGGHHHH!!!

I don't know what the f**k happened, but there are NO pictures in this
digital camera!! I know I took a few, and so did Pat. I have no idea what
happened to them.
I am so disappointed. I want to cry. I don't know what I did wrong. This
is horrible!

Sisterlocks Regional Conference - My Take

2007-11-28 10:15:19

I just got home about an hour ago. Still winding down. What a wonderful
weekend!!
I was working -- helping out with registrations, selling products, etc.,
and didn't get a chance to see everything, but I saw most of it. The
various panels and discussions were awesome. Audience members came up to
the mike and asked questions about everything from learning the technique
and becoming certified to particular hair issues they were having. Sheila
and JoAnne took the time to answer every one of them -- even stopping to
talk to people individually in the hallways or wherever.
Dr. Khephera, a holistic medicine practitioner gave an awesome talk about
natural healing, the foods we eat, our lifestyles, stress, etc., and how
all of that effects our hair.
I'm sorry I can't remember this woman's name, but she gave a head-wrapping
demonstration that was out of this world!! Didn't Sandy go and buy a scarf
and wrap her head up?!?! And then people started asking me why I covered
my gorgeous locks! Woo hoo! The gurl was feelin'l good then!!
Then came the styling, grooming, and cutting segment. They did a lot of
styling and grooming (sorry I wasn't taking notes, but I think Pat did) and
let me tell you they were STYLIN' some hair! Little girls, 13 year olds,
and grown women. BEEEUUUUTIFUL!! Then Sheila said that's all for this
segment and asked if anyone had any questions. Thankfully someone raised
her hand and asked what happened to the cutting. Sheila played dumb and
asked if she was supposed to cut anybody's hair. I didn't bother raising
my hand. I stood up!!! She laughed and told me to come on
up. Hallelujah!! I thought she was gonna skip the cutting part because
they were running late!
Then I'm sitting up there on the stage and they couldn't find the damned
scissors! NOOOOOO!!! After a few minutes, scissors were located and
Sheila started cutting. She explained to the audience that I wanted to get
rid of the permed ends because my hair is now completely locked and the
straight permed hair on the ends "has no purpose". I like that term. It's
perfect.
As she cut my hair and saw how the back curls up so nicely she said she'd
leave it alone because that will allow me to keep the length and the look
that I like in the back, and still get rid of the perm on
top. PERFECT!! That's exactly what I wanted. When she was done, I shook
my head to get the loose hairs out, and it just fell down into place like
it was supposed to. I LOVE IT!!
I don't remember what happened next. I'm really tired, and I'm sure that
later messages will remind me of other stuff. But in the evening there was
a fashion show, and I was a model. Oh lordy help me. Talk about
nervous!! Sheila had a professional makeup artist for us, a professional
photographer to add our pictures to her portfolio, and we got to model some
gorgeous hand-made, hand-painted afrocentric outfits. I felt like a
queen! I was nervous as hell, but everybody said we did a great job and
didn't look nervous at all. We all remembered our cues, remembered our
little choreography, and the designer hugged us and thanked us for making
her clothes look so good. We gave our thanks to HER for the clothes that
made us feel so gorgeous and sexy! We were looking good gurls!!
Today there was a pamper party. The manicure/pedicure lady didn't show up.
:-( But the massage thereapist and the parrafin wax lady were there. I
got a full body massage that was wonderful! We all sat around in the
presidential suite eating fresh strawberries, talking trash, getting our
feet and hand waxed, getting massages, hot tub therapy, etc. I was SO
relaxed I didn't think I'd be able to drive home without falling asleep at
the wheel.
Enough of this... I'm just going on and on and on, and I really want to see
if my pictures came out decent so I can upload them to the files area.
The pictures from my haircut will be put up on my website within the next
couple of days... maybe tomorrow.

Not Happy with Sisterlocks

2007-11-27 05:35:18

Barbara is located in Los Angeles.
You can order the starter shampoo from the home office. Hurry! You need
it immediately. Using other shampoos can cause slippage in your locks.
Btw, I'd like to remind everyone who gets this group in digest form, please
type in a subject when you reply to email. It makes it much easier for
everyone to read, find, and/or respond to messages when they can see what
the subject of the messages are.
Another reminder to anyone here who is contemplating getting
Sisterlocks. Do your homework. Use your consultation to not only find out
about the Sisterlocks process, but also to "interview" the
consultants. Talk to more than one consultant before you choose
one. There are certain things that are a part of the Sisterlocks
package. You should get all of these included, and you should discuss this
up front before you decide on a consultant. Even the new consultants
should be offering the complete package as stated by the home office.
The Sisterlocks package can be found on the Sisterlocks website, or I have
placed a copy of it here in our own files area.

Dr. Cornwell's Locks

2007-11-26 09:38:49

Gorgeous and perfect. She would rival any Lady Godiva immage because
tightly curled these baby'a were down to her butt!
She touched my locks and arrested my concerns - such a wonderful and
warm person.
That's how I would describe the Everrette's and the regional
conference- a positive and uplifting family reunion packed with loads
of info. Seeing all the FABULOUS sisterlocks reaffirmed my
commitement with so many ladies looking like me! The locks were
braided, curled, crimped, knotted, sculpted, colored and sun kissed
and all very beautiful!
I did not get a chance to stay for the dance, hubby was very tired,
but I can imagine you ladies all dolled up.
Sisterlocks are soooo unique, and dramatic. They make you stop just
to get a better look at what's going on in that head! I'm just happy
to be a part of this phenomenom. Keep rocking your locks...your
Sisterlocks!

Hi Nikican,
By no means am I a Sister Lock's consultant, but I loced my daughter's
(8-years-old) hair a year ago and they look like "Heaven's Girl's"
hair...EVERYBODY thinks they're Sister Locks! I mean everybody...I didn't
realize it until I started seeing photos of Sister Locks...I split the job up
into two day, and it took a total of 20 hours! Girl, we were both cranky and mad
at the end! I slept the entire next day! LOL! No lie! They are so small that she
can wear any style she wants...you can't even tell they're locs until you get up
closer...I get so many mothers asking me to do their daughter's and theirs, but
I just can deal with the length of time over and over again...Anyway, I'll send
you a pic of her if you'd like...She loves them and they are a life saver! No
more tears!

My 12 year old really wants Sisterlocks badly. I wish that I could
have gotten them put in before all of the perm damage. She had
beautiful thick hair also but begged me for a perm for years before I
relented. I am hoping to learn the technique this year and I can put
her locks in myself. Besides, the wait will be good for her. She is
growing out of her perm now and I can be sure that she really wants
the Sisterlocks. She wanted that perm badly also.

My hair is so thick, that I didn't think anyone would
want to "deal" with it, but after seeing "Heaven's

hope for me. My hair is type 4a, EXTREMELY THICK,

Also, I just wanted to note that I did not go out in public with my

Sisterlocks in Old Braids and Beauty

2007-11-18 04:56:00

I was in my basement looking through some old publications when I
found an old Braids and Beauty. The cover is gone but the inside
says Summer #65. Anyway there are about 4 pages of models wearing
Sisterlocks. I thought that I had seen Sisterlocks in this magazine
before but I did not know that it was that long ago and that I had
kept the magazine.
Most of the models are wearing the very thin locks and most still
have perm.
On one page there is a pictures of Barbera Bramwell. I bet her locks
are much longer now. It says that she is skilled in the technique
and it has her phone number.
The last page has a book review of No Lye by Tulani Kinard.
Now I know what started me to buying this magazine.
If I get my scanner working I would like to post the PICs for you all
if that is an OK thing to do.
Carol

Re: Cutting Off the Perm!!

2007-11-18 01:22:56

I have been gradually snipping mine off. It is no big deal with mine
because there is only an inch maybe 2 left of permed hair. I have
these wispy ends on some locks that stick out. I usually cut them
when they get real stringy. I think they may be breaking off anyway
because they are so thin and stringy. It gets difficult to get them
to lay down over a roller. I never cut all of the way to the natural
hair.
At my next retightening maybe my consultant can finish them off
because there isn't really much left of them.

Re: [LockItUp] Cutting Off the Perm!!

2007-11-18 00:33:17

Actually it's supposed to be done little by little. Once the locks are
mature enough you can start trimming the ends... maybe a little at each
retightening... until one day it's all gone.
I'm just impatient and tired of this stuff sticking out looking like dead
horsehair, so I want it all off now.

Fannie Mae Commercial

2007-11-16 22:04:42

Did anyone else here see this commercial? A sister and
her husband received a new credit card in the mail. He
asked what she wanted (dinner, clothes) and she told him
that she wanted a house.
She appeared to be sporting mature 6-10 inch Sisterlocks!
They were full (not recently tightened) but medium to medium
large size. They looked too uniform to be anything but
Sisterlocks. She wore them hanging (not curled), had
slightly lighter colored ends. Her locs are gorgeous!

Re: HeavnsGirl's Pics

2007-11-16 13:33:54

YES, YES, YES! I've read your posts on a few of the boards
and I'm glad you came home to Sisterlocks!
I have questions too:
-- What size Sisterlocks did you get?
-- How long did it take to put them in?
-- How did you style your hair previously?
-- What has been the reactions from family, friends, job?
-- What motivated you to take this step?

Finally - Cutting Off the Perm!!

2007-11-16 13:18:12

Woo hoo!! I'm gonna get this dead, straight, relaxed stuff ALL cut off
next weekend!! Woo hoo!!
I was at Everette's the other day on some business, and I mentioned to
Sheila that I'm getting that urge again. She's always talked me out of
taking scissors to my head before, and she's said that we will trim the
permed hair little by little. So far that's been working fine. I liked
the cut that I got before. But I experienced some (IMO) bad hair days this
week because of the permed ends.
I like wearing my locks free. No rollers, no curling iron, etc. But when
I do this, the permed ends at the top and sides don't cooperate. I wish the
permed hair in those areas would curl up naturally like the permed hair in
the back... but it just won't. So I have to roll the ends or use a curling
iron on them in order for my "no fuss" hairdo to look right.
So I've had it. I want to finally and forever get rid of the perm. As I
mentioned this to Sheila and explained the problem, she said "I'll cut it
for you... on stage... in front of an audience... at the Sisterlocks
Conference." I jumped at the chance!! I told her I'm game, ready, and
willing!
I hope she wasn't kidding, cuz I sure as heck wasn't. I'm gonna ask her
about it again Tuesday when I have to go back to rehearse for the hair
show. Yeah... I'm in the hair show. She talked me into it. <g

2007-11-14 15:53:25

Hey Sandy,
Sorry that I haven't talked to you in a while, I have been going through
some things on this end. Anyway, I was supposed to be getting my SL tomorrow,
but I think that I am going to postpone. I called my loctician yesterday to
confirm for tomorrow (I had an appt. for 7:30 tomorrow) & she called me back
today. She sounded like she had a cold & I was like, maybe we should postpone
b/c I am thinking, I know that she'll be in my scalp & I don't want to catch
a cold, but she said that she feels fine b/c she went to work today & that it
may be allergies. Then she suggested that her daughter-in-law (who recently
took out her SL b/c she didn't want to wait the 2 years it was going to take
for her hair to loc) help w/ doing my hair, so it won't take soo long. I was
like, OK, but she's not certified either. Then as we were talking, she said
that she had not been able to reach the website nor had she been able to
speak w/ the person who has decided to pay for my locs. I don't feel
comfortable w/ her doing my hair, w/ me not paying her, I mean I know that
she has said that it's not about the money, but I just wouldn't feel
comfortable with that. Anyway, I had thought that by this point, my "donor"
would have revealed their self to me, but that hasn't happened. I am just
wondering, should I still get my locs done from this person? Has the donor
changed her mind? Oh, what to do?

Re: [LockItUp] Wrap, Snap and Roll

2007-11-13 23:12:28

I've seen these on tv. I don't understand why it would be necessary to use
a blowdryer... except that it would make the curling process faster. I can
see this if you're looking for a quickie do.
But if you're not pressed for time, or if you're going to sleep on the
rollers, I don't think a blow-dryer would be necessary.
Just my thoughts.

Re: Sisterlocks Web Site

2007-11-11 00:35:35

Here, here, I agree. A wealth of information. This excerpt would
have been most helpful to me [in advance] as I do not like small,
tiny, locs:
"Locks were made too large. Sometimes this happens when the client
insists that they want Sisterlocks, only "not so small". The problem
here is that Sisterlocks were designed to be "so small"! Clients
wanting larger locks would usually do better to go with another
locking system . . ."
"One of the reasons the Consultant is required to put sample locks in
the client's hair during the consultation is so that both can agree
that the lock sizes are appropriate. You and your Consultant should
never skip this step! You should have a clear idea of what your locks
are going to look like BEFORE your Consultant locks your entire head."
"Amen" to the above. The "consulting" step is oh so important. Due
to long distance, I did not have the separate "consulting" phase. It
was kinda like done when I arrived for THE appointment (my request,
I'm not blaming anybody).
To add I would say if you don't have a consultant nearby, or you are
not able to afford the back-and-forth of visiting a consultant not in
close proximity = don't go there, don't get the Sisterlocks.

Aside from my digital camera, I have a Ricoh with a 130mm zoom which I
love. I think it was somewhere around $200.00. I had to have a decent
zoom. It takes very nice pictures and is quite easy to use.
I don't know how much you want to pay or what kind of features you want,
but my advice (from the home shopping queen) is to check out QVC's web
site. They have all types, all price ranges. You'll probably find what
you're looking for. Or at least you'll be able to read about and
understand the different features -- without a salesman breathing down your
neck -- so you can then make a better decision as to features and price.
I hope this helped.

I honestly didn't. It really is better than I expected. And I'm still
transitioning! It's only been 8 months. I've got a ways to go before I
can say my locks are "fully" mature. I can't even imagine how much I'll
love it then.
That's the truth!
That last picture I showed was taken today at work. After I washed my hair
last night I didn't do anything to it. I hit it a bit with the blowdryer
so I wouldn't be sleeping on wet hair. I got up this morning, combed it
back with my fingers, and didn't bother doing anything else. While that
might not be the prettiest style for me (I think I look younger with the
bangs... plus they hide the gray in the front), it's nice, neat, and
well-groomed. I could NEVER have done that with a perm.

will spend, they still perm-break-perm-break.....
It is so unnecessary.

Re: Hello All

Hi Dana
Akwabaa(means welcome) to Lockitup. I'm pleased to hear that you
went to sisterlocks class. I took the consultant course in February
and I'm hoping to be certified by the June cutoff also. I currently
reside in Bellevue Nebraska .I'm moving to Chicago in July and I'm
planning to travel back and forth to continue to lock sisters in
Nebraska. I'm moving but, I feel committed to my sisters in the
heart of the midwest. When I leave there won't a consultant in the
state at all. Nebraska really needs to be educated about natural
hair.
I have a question for all the consultants. Have you ever considered
traveling to do sisterlocks and if so have you had any problems? I
would be returning home every other month and I can do hair in my
mothers family room. Consultants please tell me your experiences.

Re: [LockItUp] Shampoo Scare

2007-11-06 10:52:22

ROFLMAO!! That pure castille soap is some powerful stuff. It *must* be
diluted to use as a shampoo.
If it makes you feel any better, I don't think that buildup you felt came
from the soap. Pure soap doesn't have anything in it to buildup and become
waxy. I think (and this is only a guess) it's the reaction of the soap
combined with whatever products you've been putting on your hair. You may
need to purchase a clarifying shampoo to use just once to get rid of the
buildup.

Re: Shampoo Scare

2007-11-06 10:06:55

I have not used any products in my hair yet. I only use water to set
it. My consultant asked me the same thing though. She showed me the
oil on her fingers when she retightened my hair. That is strange to
me because my hair and scalp feels dry to me most of the time.
I had the same idea about the clarifying shampoo. I may do that.
Thanks.
The Bronners soap is nice. I was really enjoying that shampoo. Like
someone else said, it feels like an Herbal Essence commercial. It's
is also nice when you put a little dab of it on one of those puffy
sponges and use like a body wash.

Re: [LockItUp] Starting over

Don't cut it off and start all over. Let your new consultant combine your
locks. It will will just fine. You've come too far in the locking process
to start all over.
Just my opinion.
May I also suggest that you let your former consultant know that you asked
for medium locks and she gave you micros and you are not pleased. You
might also let the home office know of this too. It may well be that the
consultant is kinda new and didn't realize she was creating micros... in
which case, she needs a little refresher training course.
Just a suggestion.

Shampoo Scare

2007-11-05 10:51:48

I had a little fright yesterday only because I am so hard headed.
I read advise from people and think my way will work also.
Instead of diluting the Dr. Bronners soap I would just squeeze out a
little to shampoo my hair as usual. Yesterday I must have squeezed
out too much. I was washing my head and I am thinking finally I am
getting some good lather. I rinsed my head and I am thinking all of
this tingling feels really nice and smells so nice. Then I reached
up and felt my head. If felt like wax was in my hair. It had a oily
and waxy feel. Then I thought "Oh Boy you have done it now!" I did
not know what the fall out would be. Maybe slippage if that is
possible at this stage or heavy locks full of lint, I don't know but
it scared me a bit.
I rinsed again and it felt better but the scalp felt really oily. So
I rinsed and shampooed with a different shampoo and rinsed again.
That was probably not a good thing either but it felt better. I know
we don't want squeeky clean hair but all of that oil scared me.
My hair looks fine so I hope it is OK.
My unsolicited advice is to dilute the soap.

Re: Starting over

2007-11-05 08:26:57

I think braiding over your Sisterlocks may be a good idea but maybe
not micros. You are talking a long session and a lot of money again.
I was thinking if you braid over them that would give your hair time
to grow, and save you that money and time that you spend on your
retigtenings. You will also have time to think if you still want
Sisterlocks. If so, then your hair will be longer, you could cut off
the permed ends and maybe then start combining locks but, remember
that first retightening will probably be a long one.
My consultant said that she doesn't do the micros because it is just
to much to maintain. If you don't stay on top of them they can get
ratty and/ or break off.
I am sorry that you are having such a bad experience. Hang in there.
At least you did not mention going back to relaxers.

Starting over

2007-11-05 06:53:46

Hello ladies,
Im back again. Ive been very discouraged with my sisterlock
experience but God knows Im trying to hold on. For those of u who
dont remember me, I had painful retightenings that took 13 hours,
changed consultants now it takes 8 hours and 200 dolars every 6
weeks. My locks are micro although i requested medium to large. My
new consultanted suggested combining locks over a few sessions but is
not sure of how it will look. Im really considering just taking
them down and letting her start all over and getting rid of the
permed ends in the process, which will make my locks pretty short.
So Im cnsidering micro braids until my hair grows out. Bottom line
is Ive been going thru this since October and Im not happy with it.
Please ladies more words of support and suggestions like uve done in
the past
Thank you so much...

anyone know of any EO or other hair product that will repel bugs, bees, etc.
Just the names of the good stuff we use will probably attract them. Stuff like
"milk, honey, tea tree oil, Nature's Blessing."

Pamper Yourself!

2007-11-03 13:37:50

What more could anyone want after a day of Sisterlocks hairstyling tips and
classes? A day of pampering of course!
We've added a Pamper Party to the schedule for the Sisterlocks Regional
Conference. Sunday, April 29, 2001 will be devoted to pampering
ourselves... something we do as often as we should.
There'll be massages, manicures & pedicures, paraffin wax therapy, facials,
and a complimentary head wrapping class for all Pamper Party participants.
Check out the web page for full details and call Everettes at 313-527-2884
to reserve your pampering time!

And don't forget to reserve your spot on our chartered bus for the World
Natural Hair, Health & Beauty Show in Atlanta the weekend of June 1st.

Um... that was supposed to say "something we don't do as often as we
should". Oh well... I guess I'll never make it in the advertising
industry. :-)

Re: Rates Everettes??

Thanks Sandy You are super fast!!!! I'll find out when I go for my
consultation and test locks. I just hope it is not over a thousand
dollars. I have really, really thick hair and Shelia made a joke that
it would be that much for all the hair I have on my head. It took her
a little bit over 12 hours to complete by braids that where in a bob
that stopped right at the end of my neck just barely touching my
shoulders. They were medium width braids, not tiny at all.. Wish me
luck. I hope i can sit for the several days she was talking about. I
hope this was also a part of the joke :) I have been preparing for
this Investment for several months.

Rates Everettes??

2007-11-02 20:53:18

First of all I just want to say hi to everyone and apologize for not
being very active in this group. Everyone in here is so beautiful
rockin their sisterlocks that I can't wait until I get mine.
I was reading one of the previous posts (I have been way behind
because of school) and a member stated (sorry i can't remember who it
was)that she could not afford the professional rates at Everettes. Is
there a price difference based on if shelia does the sisterlocks or
the students? If so how much of a difference are we talking about?
Shelia has always been the person to do my braids so I need to know
what to expect when I get sisterlocks in May.
Excuse any typos I may or maynot have, finals time so I'm stressin!!!

Re: [LockItUp] Rates Everettes??

Hmmm... I don't quite know how to answer this. I *think* (don't know for
sure cuz I've never asked) there may be a difference between having your
Sisterlocks done by one of the other certified consultants there (Sheila or
Pam for instance) or by a student who is in training but not yet finished
the course and/or not yet certified.
Exactly how much that difference would be.. I couldn't tell you. You would
best call up and talk to them. The pricing of Sisterlocks is so variable,
that it's really impossible to give a definite answer to a question like that.

Re: [LockItUp] Kizzy????

It's a pomade for laying hair down and controlling the frizzies. It's all
natural and you can get it from Carol's Daughter. http://www.carolsdaughter.com

I just put some on my hands, add a little water, and slick those ends down
after styling. I don't use it when I'm rolling.
Oh yes! I love the scent!

Kizzy

2007-11-01 07:29:53

I recently got my backorder of Kizzy. I use it to keep the fly aways
down on my girls hairline.
Sandy, you mentioned that it keeps the permed ends down. Do you put
it on the ends when you roll them or just apply it to the ends to
keep them down?
It has a very nice scent.
