Black-Owned HairCare Companies

Last year we were discussing hair care companies on another group, and one
of our members posted the following. I thought it was worth posting again.

Re: [LockItUp] My webpage...

VERY NICE!!!
I really enjoy the way you write. Personality comes through. :-)
I do have one teeny bit of advice. On your page you use the word
"loctician" quite a bit. Keeping in mind that not all Sisterlocks
Consultants are locticians, I would suggest you change it to "Sisterlocks
consultant" in some places and just "consultant" in others. I think this
is more accurate and would eliminate any confusion. We don't want folks
thinking they can go to a "loctician" and get Sisterlocks.
Other than that I think it's great. I bookmarked it and I'll add it to my
links page tonight.

Now that I think about it probably shoulda just e-mail you the

Let me know. Maybe someone else can come up with something better

Thanks Aminah! Tell me again what you did, for future reference. I will be

Yes, by all means, put Miss Page on your site. She would just looooove

absolutely loves her hair and her locks!
Sandy, can you send me an email detailing how to compress my photos

did for my photos. You reduced my pictures and uploaded the smaller

Hello All!
I've been so busy, but I wanted to let you all know that I am now a
trained Sisterlocks Consultant. I took the training course last week
on Tuesday, March 20 and Wednesday, March 21. My Certified Training
Consultant, Marcia Moore, stated that I was her star pupil! I took
the course to be able to re-tighten my daughter's hair, but now I'm
looking to possibly venture into some sort of business for myself.
POSSIBLY, I say. I will also do a little work on my own locks.

Re: [LockItUp] Toxic Products

Petroleum and all of its derivatives, such as petrolatum and other names

nothing for it. It clogs the pores and stops the scalp from doing what
it's supposed to do.

Dark & Lovely's Natural Hair Care Products

2007-08-27 11:18:01

Actually I think this is a better choice. Dark & Lovely is, naturally,
trying to cash in on the natural hair care movement. However, if you look
at the ingredients of these products, you'll see that they're made up of
the same chemicals, preservatives, and stuff that their other products are
made from... with a teeny weeny bit of an herb or essential oil listed at
the end of the ingredients.
These new Dark & Lovely products may work just fine.. I don't know.. but if
you're looking for truly natural products, these aren't the ones to get.
Just my personal opinion.

The Journey Continues...

2007-08-25 08:25:55

One Step Closer....
I just wanted to tell you all that I just finished putting the comb
twist in my hair! I was so excited from talking to you all and
looking at the pictures in the photo album that I just had to try
them. I thought that they were beautiful and looked simple enough
for me to try. Even though I have been au naturale since January
2000 I had only wore my hair in two styles (well three if you count
the one day I wore the twist out) I wash and wear it in a curly TWA
or I put it in two braids. Well today I am liberated from natural
hair monotany... I was scared at first because I have never been
particularly adept at styling my hair... Although I did know how to
work a pony tail in junior high... lol.
I went to Sally's and bought some Dark and Lovely hair gel (i chose
it because it didn't have any alcohol in it)with the pink top on it.
I bought a rat tail comb and some hot 6 oil. Got home washed and
conditioned my hair. I'm currently using Pantene's line for curly
hair.. it seems to work well for me. The conditioner is great! I
sectioned my hair into 8 pieces and bound them with rubber bands (i
know they are bad but my hair is too thick to just let it be while I
style it) and began to twirl my hair up. It was so uncomfortable to
use that rat tail comb that I began to get discouraged. Then i had a
thought... I am always twirling my hair around my fingers... what if
i did that with the gel in my hair....
IT WORKED!!!
I worked my way completly around my head and it came out
beautifully....
And guess what.....
I TOOK PICTURES!..... BEFORE DURING AND AFTER!
I'm going to Rite Aid in the morning to develop them and if all goes
well I'll have them online tomorrow afternoon....
Thanks for the continual support and encouragement. I never thought
that "coming back" to natural would feel this great!

Signatures and Husband

2007-08-24 08:30:04

I really enjoy reading everyone's posts. I just wanted to jump in
and say the I have had my locks for 4 months, and tell you about my
husband's response.
My husband has been with me through my many phases of hair care for
the past 19 years; from perms to naturals to braids and back again.
Every once in awhile he would have something to say about my hair,
(of course I wouldn't listen, after all it's my hair.) But
eventually he came to accept anything I did with my hair. When I
showed him pictures of sisterlocks on the internet he thought they
were nice and encouraged me to get them. Of course when you get them
initially they don't look like the pictures, so when I came home with
my finished locks his comment was "When are they going to look like
they cost as much as they do." :)
Of course they are settling in and looking alot better now, and he
loves them and is always running his fingers through them.

Re: [LockItUp] Hair Ornaments

2007-08-24 05:54:56

I've purchased quite a few of their ornaments. Definitely you should get
the clip-on size because Sisterlocks are so skinny. I purchased their
small pendulum and I just love it in my hair. Some of their ornaments are
kinda big and I think they look better in longer hair, but that's just my
personal opinion.
Also I would suggest those small little circle things. I don't know what
you call them, but they're like teeny cigar bands -- only made out of metal
or something. They look sort of like a ring for a baby. You can put 2 or
3 locks together and slide them up on your hair. I bought a few of those
from New Bein at the lock conference last weekend. You can get the small
ones (maybe 1/4 inch) or the longer ones that I really like (maybe 1
inch). I hear you can also purchase these little things at hair stores,
but I haven't tried that yet.
I hope I'm describing this stuff correctly, as I don't really have the
proper names for them.
Try the hair stores. If you go through New Bein you won't have them in
time for your trip.

Question: SL's & wearing glasses

2007-08-23 15:37:14

I wear glasses and need some help from all of you who also wear
glasses...
I have two bald spots at each temple area [had then since I was about
10 years old, so not due to perms or anything... my Grandma said it
was because my mother pressed my hair and then pulled it back too
tight... they feuded sometimes :-) ] Anyway, the hair at the
hairline just above my ears grows fine, so when I wore pulled-back
styles I just pulled that hair over the bald spots and went on (like
you see old men do when they don't want to admit they're bald on
top!). When my Sisterlocks were put in, Karen also fashioned this
hairline hair in teeny SL's. Whenever I put my glasses on, it rubs
then and they stick straight out, perpendicular to my face. Now, my
question is this: what can I do to keep them from sticking straight
out whenever I put on my glasses? Is there anything I can do to
avoid the daily rubbing by my glasses against those few SL's?
Thanks,
Jennifer

You are indeed lucky, Kaylois. You and your husband are so fortunate
to already know that a person's skin coloring has nothing whatsoever
to do with them loving and supporting you. I have also dated all
races of men because I truly believe that maybe that one person God
put on this earth for me might be housed in other than black skin. I
have found that the white men I count as friends (lovers or

Another Shampoo Experience

2007-08-21 13:00:41

I bought Sisterlocks Tea Tree Shampoo last week and used it for the first
time tonight. I like it. It doesn't suds up as much as Dr. Bronner's, but
I did get suds. Plus I keep reminding myself that it doesn't take suds to
get hair clean. This shampoo cleaned my hair very well *and* it left it
moisturized. I like this stuff. :-)
On another note, if you'll recall I had mentioned previously that every
time I washed my hair it came out differently and I liked it more and
more. Well it happened again. It's all fluffed up, thicker -- looking
like lots-o-locks!! I love it! I wish I had someone here to take my picture.

I'm having a difficult

the Homecoming event?
**I found last year's program. The individual activities/events ranged
from $25-$75. They do offer packages. The price range is $130-$290.
Does it include hotel?
**No. Hotel cost not included.
Can we bring significant others or is it strictly a
girl thang?
**Some women brought their men, but it was mostly a girl thang.
What are some of the events?
**Last year's event/activities were: Retightening Class,
Styling/Maintenance class, glamour shots, Health and Safety class (for
natural hair stylists), a Mini Spa experience, business dinner,
luncheon, dinner/dance party.
And how far in advance do they start selling the

Re: coloring....

2007-08-20 09:50:27

Missy,
Ityped in "henna" and did a search of the archives. I found a message I
sent back in August. It's message number 370. Nevermind, I'll go ahead
and copy and paste the message here:
I learned a lot from the Styling and Maintenance class. Here's a rough
rundown:
Hair Color: Permanent hair color (ammonia, peroxide) should be avoided.
Henna coats the outside of the cuticle. Too much coating makes hair
brittle. Don't use white henna. Pure or colorless is OK for shine. Must
use conditioner. Semi permanent color does not make a chemical change.
Jazzing or Beautiful Collection by Clairol are OK. Only lasts 4-6
shampoos. Will not lift/lighten hair. Cellophane has polymers that
stain the scalp. MRX will remove color from the skin.
Hair Care: Use curling irons sparingly. Avoid rollers with fiber. Perm
rods or flexible rollers should be used. Be careful with the clamp on
the magnetic rollers. Best to simply use water to set hair, or use a
setting lotion/mousse that reads "non-alcohol, non-flaky." Lotta Body
leaves too much residue. Use water-soluable products, not extremely
oily. Don't use end papers. Don't use reconstructor/conditioner until
locks have matured. Use moisture treatment on ends to stop bunching.
Use accessories that don't cut into the hair.

Semi-permanent color gets the thumbs up if you have mature locks. The
conditioner causes new SLs to slip.

How long did it take? How much was it? Did it teach
you everything you needed to know? How has it been
locking your own hair?
As of right now, that's the one thing I wish I could
do. I want to learn, but I'm a bit apprehensive.

Sue,
Your comments are very on the mark, and I have lined up African
American women with this other perspective just to give the piece
some colour (no pun intended!). I am also trying to see if I can
freelance a written version of the story locally to a paper in
Dallas, but I have to find an angle with a bit of an edge. Your
experience with you friend is the sort of thing I would like to find
more of. It's not that I am trying to stir up trouble, but there IS a
feeling that if you go natural you are some how letting the side
down. I could explore more of that in a print article than I could on
the airwaves. That will be a whole story about empowerment and how a
reclaimed sense of identity is being manifest through hair.
Personally, I think that you wear your hair the way it makes you
happy. For me, going natural was the way for me and my hair to be
happy. I grew up in a family where I was the darkest (y'all knwo what
that means!) and felt I had to over compensate. Not bloody any more!

They're afraid of it. Rather than seeing it as another avenue of hair care
they can pursue, they see it as a loss of business.
I don't think they've been effected yet. But as the natural hair movement

Natural Hair on the Airwaves -- In Jolly Old England!

2007-08-16 20:26:08

Hey ladies,
Have to say thank you all so much for your wealth of information and
candor. As a result of deciding to get SLs myself, and finding this
group, I've been able to convince Woman's Hour, a show on BBC
national radio here in the UK, to allow me to do a story on an aspect
of the natural hair embrace by African American women. I'll be
talking to a few folks in Texas, Florida and New York about the idea
how African American women are developing a new sense of empowerment
and this manifest through the embrace of natural hair in a BIG way!
I'm very excited about this story, and shall let you know when it
runs. You can't listen to it live as it were on NPR, but you can
listen to it on line, once it's run.
But a question. I need the other side. While this group and others
like it are positve and all embracing of natural hair, how does the
traditional black hair industry view this? Has there been a
significant drop in the sales of relaxer? Have traditional salons
been affected as less women seek these sorts of treatments? has
anyone notice a backlash? do please let me know as these woudl all
be relevant.
Anyway, thanks again for all your help and giving me the confidence
to pitch my first story to the nationals. not bad for an American
journalist who's never done radio before!!

PS: Two weeks and counting to getting my SLs put in!

Ladies, my locks are 2 years old and are very fuzzy. I am going have them
groomed next month. I did all the right things-braided while I washed for
most of the 1st year, always wear a satin cap, use no oils, etc...and I am
still fuzzy. I think it really all depends on your hair texture. I think
that the tighter the kink/nap, the less likely you are to be fuzzy. So, if
you are fuzzy now, you may be fuzzy later.

Lawanza, I too hope it goes away with time. If it doesn't then I will also
take the grooming approach. I've seen lots of pictures of people that have

so maybe there is hope that they will go away. If not, I am quite happy to

Loving Our Hair

2007-08-14 10:45:30

Sue, you are touching on something I was thinking about just the other
day. In the past I may have liked my hair 'style' or my hair 'cut' or
something like that. And even those things are only temporary. But I can
never think of a time in my life when I actually loved my "hair". This is
a whole new feeling and it's wonderful. I love MY HAIR! I love the way it
feels in my fingers. I love the way it looks when it's wet. Ain't that
something new!!! LOL! I love the way it smells when a breeze hits it --
these natural products are the bomb!! I love the way it grows without
breakage and I can finally see added length to my hair instead of hair on
my pillow or down my drains.
I love the crinkly/nappy/wavy thing that's goin on in my head. The locks
themselves are very feminine -- as if the kinks are filly or
something. Gawd I know this sounds stupid, but I don't know how else to
describe what I mean. :-) Even when I don't roll it up or curl it in any
way, the hair itself looks frilly, lacy sort of... and it has a totally
feminine look. Even if my style ain't so "pretty" cuz I didn't curl it, it
doesn't matter because the hair itself is pretty and gives my face all the
oomph it needs. :-)
I haven't had a bad hair day since July 22, 2000 cuz these locks can't look
bad! I'll tell you one thing -- my sense of touch is getting one helluva
workout cuz I can NOT keep my hands out of my hair. I even look forward to
washing it because I love the feeling of the soapy locks in my hands. It's
a very tactile, sensual thing... this love affair I'm having with my hair. :-)
Ain't that the truth. And if they would only open themselves up to their
own natural beauty and leave those chemicals alone, they would learn to
love themselves and feel a sense of pride and beauty in every krinkle and
kink in their heads. Whether we're talking afro, twist, locks, SL, or
whatever, it's all absolutely gorgeous!

Hi Sue,
My locs are fuzzy as well. I worried so much about them being fuzzy
when I first had my locs put in but, now I don't worry too much about
it. Just like yours my locs do not look fuzzy when wet but, when
they're dry they start to "fuzz up" again. I do hope the fuzziness
goes away with time but if it doesn't I had planned to have them
groomed as Sandy described in her reply to you. Take Care.

Re: [LockItUp] Fuzzy Locks

2007-08-13 14:56:08

Yep. Mine have been that way for a long time. I've decided that it has to
do with the hair texture. Of course I could be all the way wrong about
that. :-) My natural hair texture is nowhere near really kinky, so I think
this is why I get these stray hairs that aren't kinking up into the
locks. It seems to go away after washing my hair, but comes back after a
few days. I don't even worry about it anymore.
I think eventually I'll have my consultant go through my head with some
scissors and groom the locks, though. That will get rid of those stray
fuzzies. I may have to do this once or twice a year maybe.
Sigrid? Kim? What do you think? Is this something they address you in

Fuzzy Locks

2007-08-13 03:10:54

2 weeks and 2 days into my SL's I have a question for all the SL wearers
that have already been through this stage. I notice that my locks are now
looking "fuzzy". Does that make sense to anyone? It just seems like there
are lots of little hairs sticking out all over the length of the lock. I
sleep with satin scarf at night. I'm not sure if this fuzzy appearance is
part of the locking process or if it means something is wrong. I'm going
to see my consultant on Saturday, but until then maybe someone could help me
not to worry that something is going wrong. Other than the fuzziness, the
locks seem fine. They are already thickening up, and I don't appear to have
much slippage (based on the descriptions that I've read). Can some please
advise me!
Thanks

Many times you'll read my site and see stuff there that you've already seen

Missy, you simply say the same things you've been saying here. Record your
experiences, your feelings. When you look in the mirror and feel like your
hair is looking exceptionally fine, make a note of it and put it on the
website. If you're having trouble with your hair matting or locks growing
together, put that on there too -- along with the solution, of
course. Wherever your journey takes you is what needs to go on your website.
If you're thinking about coloring, but can't decide, put that up there
along with various suggestions you've gotten about the types of
color. Think of it as if you are talking to a group of friends. You're
not writing a book... just chatting with friends about your hair. :-)

I'm sorry I missed you when I was in San Diego last week. I had heard

on my last day and hoped you would get it and not be too mad with me.
I was so exhausted because of the time difference and the long flying
time. It took me about 18 hours door to door in the end just
getting from my house to the hotel there! In London we're 8 hours
ahead of you and I had a hard time keeping awake in the evenings,
although I'd sleep for a couple of hours and then wake up again around

Oh well, maybe next time - perhaps 2002 homecoming???? Hope you're

If you really think about it, isn't it interesting how much alike all of our

hair journeys are so similar can serve to inspire others. My suggestion is to
do the website more for yourself. As you write you will connect with how your
beliefs about your hair have affected you as a person. And remember that many
people are more interested in the pictures...and we know they are all very

I understand that conditioners (detanglers) aren't good when your locks are
young because they retard the locking process. However, if your SL are two

Let's see what the consultants here have to say about it.

I don't know. You must be doing it differently than I am. I run my
fingers following the parts. If locks have caught each other and you're
following the part, you're sure to run into resistance where two locks are
caught together. When you get this resistance, just pull the locks apart.
U ever noticed how white folks will run their hands thru their hair....this is
my technique.
Just going thru it, but I am goingto start feeling the parts. Sometimes I do get
a pull in my head and I could scream...at the tangle. I believe my hair was
matted b/c of the many wraps I was wearing the last 2 weeks.
We've gotten so techy with this running of our finger thru....lol

Congrats, Aminah... you can "hear" the excitement in your post! :)
It is an exciting time when the day finally arrives to get the SL's
put in. I would definitely wash all the moisturizer and other
products from your hair the night before. I used "Aveda hair
detoxifier" that I purchased at Sally's Beauty Supply because my
consultant said this would take all the stuff out of my hair and not
damage the hair. I then braided my hair up as always to let it air
dry. When I went for my SL's, it only took her a few seconds to
undue the braids and finger comb them... then she proceeded to put in
my SL's.
Have a safe trip and good luck with your SL's...

I don't know. You must be doing it differently than I am. I run my
fingers following the parts. If locks have caught each other and you're
following the part, you're sure to run into resistance where two locks are
caught together. When you get this resistance, just pull the locks apart.

Call them again Devon and leave your name and address and tell them what
you want. They'll mail all the Homecoming info to you. (They *really*
should have all this info on the web site... but there goes my pet peeve
showing again <g
Most of the stuff we call the home office for doesn't need a "live" person
on the phone or a call back. If we leave good detailed messages in their
machine, they'll mail whatever we need.

this is where I am puzzled Sandy. I am always running my hands through my head.
How I had so much bonding of locs amazes me.
I just run my fingers through it should I be doing more?
Sandy Fields <diamonique@...
Missy, if you separate your locks regularly she shouldn't have to cut them
loose. I separate them after every shampoo, and sometimes during the
week. I keep my hand in my hair so much (I just love the way it feels)
that I find those that are grabbing each other before they get a chance to hug.

SL Homecoming in July

2007-08-07 07:28:08

All-
I have a few questions. Can someone please help me? I'm having a difficult time
getting the Home Office on the phone (I left 2 messages and I know they are
shorthanded). Can anyone give me the price of the Homecoming event? Does it
include hotel? Can we bring significant others or is it strictly a girl thang?
What are some of the events? I know you'll be quoting last year's prices but I
have no idea. I'm planning to attend and I'm considering the training (I have
info on that). And how far in advance do they start selling the tickets?
Thanks Much
Devon

go because I have permed ends, but I am so excited. I can not wait to
watch the transformation.
Congrats, Chantrell! You're going to really thank yourself for
getting Sisterlocks. How much permed ends do you have? Eventually
your permed ends will be snipped off, I think, after your locks
mature enough. By then you'll be very adept at caring for your SL's.
I saw a sister on the street with one and I wondered did it really
get the job done. And now I know it will.
I just ordered the turbie twist towels from the home shopping network
website yesterday and am anxious to try them out.
want to make any mistakes that is why I love this group so much. I
don't feel afraid about this journey...just really excited.
Yes, isn't this group awesome! I really gained a lot of information
here before I got my Sisterlocks done (in February 2001) and have
gained even more information since then, too. For example: I was
already accustomed to using a spritz of water/tea tree oil on my
scalp to keep it from getting dry and itchy. Someone suggested she
used aloe vera juice/tea tree oil spritz on her scalp instead. I
tried it the other day and it feel very good and lasts a lot longer
than the water mixture. So, trust me, you'll find out good ways to
care for your locks. I've gained such good information from this
group that when I went for my first retightening, I didn't have any
slippage or problems (except two little locks at the nape where my
hair is almost straight). Good luck to you...

Re: Confidence to wear natural hair...

symbolizes the new growth I was (am) experiencing internally as
well. It takes confidence to be a bald-headed sister...People would
look at me funny, my man was walking around with his lips poked out,
my mother kept sending me wigs in the mail...
LOL, I love this...I'm laughing because my man at the time also had
something to say when I cut all my permed, dyed & fried hair off
about three years ago. I didn't have the courage to wear my bald
head, though. But he kept asking me "why?" When my hair grew long
enough to get braided extensions put in, he finally quit questioning
me. When I first decided to research Sisterlocks (about a year and a
half before I actually had them put in), he questioned me again. I
told myself the year 2001 would be the "Year of the Jennifer." I got
a new man in January (got tired of the old one questioning everything
I wanted to do) and got my Sisterlocks in February! Right about now,
I'm feeling mighty good about me! :)

Re: [LockItUp] Hair education

2007-08-06 06:04:05

Matting *is* locking. Depending on your hair texture and how it is going
through the locking process, the locks *will* grab each other. How much or
how little depends on your hair.
But if you separate your locks after every shampoo, you shouldn't have a
problem.
We're instructed to separate them after washing. I separate mine more
often because 1) my hands are in my head all the time, and 2) as I get
closer to time for retightening, they tend to grab each other a *lot*. So
the more new growth I have, the more often I separate the locks -- just
just after shampooing.
If you feel a strand of hair grabbing it's next door neighbor, just pull
them apart.

2007-08-06 01:05:21

Sandy-
Okay I get that part, but will they mat if you're not locking yet? I'm just
curious because my SL's separate by themselves after I wash my hair (I still go
thru to make sure). Also don't we need to separate them regularly (like daily),
not just after washing? I thought I read somewhere or saw in one of Joanne's
videos that separating is like combing your hair. And... I can see how I might
have that problem more now that I'm not rolling my hair. My curled hair behaves
differently.

Hi everyone,
I have enjoyed reading the daily emails and learning more about SLs. I
just had my SL put in this Sunday and Monday. I had a long way to go
because I have permed ends, but I am so excited. I can not wait to
watch the transformation.
I am glad someone out there has bought and tried the turbie twist. I
saw a sister on the street with one and I wondered did it really get
the job done. And now I know it will. I am so nervous about making
sure I take care of my SLs that I don't want to make any mistakes that
is why I love this group so much. I don't feel afraid about this
journey...just really excited.
Peace & Blessing

Jennifer I like old styles also, the french roll is just plain ole wicked to
me. i cannot wait to wear it. Kim wears a pony on the top of her head I like
that also.
I can't wait until I can wear a french roll again... when I had my
hair braided that is how I wore it, or sometimes I'd wear my nappy
hair gelled back into a french roll when I didn't feel like having it
braided up. I like wearing my hair in an old-fashioned bun, too...
guess I'm kinda conservative. :)

this is exactly what I am goin to do, no more towels in my head. The matting was

that were hugging each other, gosh darn they bond so well up in my head.....lol

Someone shared with me a great tip for avoiding lint from towels. Try using
dark colored (black/blue) T-shirts. They work well and don't cost much of
anything. I just took all of my husbands old ones and use them with every
shampoo and have not had a problem since.
Hope this helps.
