I recall the mention of Shea Butter and the smell in an earlier post. I don't
use it on my hair cuz my SL's are too new to use anything but that boring ole SL
starter shampoo :-) I use it on my body and I tried to get my boyfriend to use
it but he didn't like the smell. I love to experiment with oils and scents. So
I mixed it with some of CD's Amaretto Truffle Coconut body milk. The body milk
was one of those solid products from CD that you have to heat up before using (a
pain to me). I ran it under the warm water to liquefy it then poured it in the
jar with the Shea Butter and Voila! Now I have the best of both worlds. It
smells wonderful!
And.....now
I have a question. I just opened a new container of Shea Butter from CD. It is
kind of white and bubbly looking. My first container was a jar and the shea
butter was sort of yellow. I've had it about 2 months. It came in a tin or
metal container. I think it must have gotten rotten or something. Was I
supposed to put it in the refrigerator (it didn't give any instrx)? I don't
want to complain if I did something wrong. Can someone help?

certain degree.

I was told that the sage is to cover the odor of the vinegar. I did
not like the smell of the sage and would have rather smelled like
vinegar. Next time I will probably use less sage or skip it.
The rinse was nice though. It did not sting my scalp but I got a
little in my eye and that stung for a second.
Hey! My locks are 7 months old. I am hoping to get the OK to stop
the braiding and banding and to try some other products.

I just rinsed my scalp with plain ol' Apple Cider Vinegar after I washed it
last night. Initially it stung a bit, but then my scalp felt soothed. I
have also done this when wearing braids (extensions).
What does the sage do?

It would be a great idea for you to see some clients with Sisterlocks that
are not new. I had my consultation on a day when my consultant was doing a
retightening. The client's Sisterlocks were a year old. So I had an idea of
what mine would look like. Everyone's hair is different though. The client
was one of those women with a whole lot of hair. She told me she liked our
consultant because she was very fast. So I was kind of happy to know that my
retightening would not take that long because my hair isn't nearly as thick
and happy to know that I had a consultant that was experienced and fast.
The photo book that the consultant had did not help much except to show what
new Sisterlocks look like. She had a lot of pictures but they were of
clients with new Sisterlocks.

Kim-
I must have beaucoup elasticity cuz I am the boing queen! I roll my hair on
sponge rollers (I have now moved to the large size to cut down on some of the
curl) but the curl lasts for 2 weeks. I wonder when my hair locks if it will
still be springy? I have thick all natural hair of about 5 inches (not locked
yet). I guess when it gets longer gravity will force it to lay down. :-)
D-
Can't wait to see. How does she start locks? Twists? Coils? I'd also be
interested to know what -- if any -- type of gel she uses to start the
locks. Many people use butters or gels for this, but I've also heard that
it's not really necessary. I'd be interested in hearing what your
loctitian says.
Hmm... come to think of it, I have to call Sheila today. I think I'll ask
her about this too.

Okay, I paid $1200 for my eleven year old daughter. Three times the price I
paid for my own hair. Yes, I did call the home office to get some clarity
and complain about the non-uniformity in the cost. I feel taken advantage
of. I do want to stress that I'm not disappointed in the work, love the
locks, just in the price. I was prepared to pay double or more, but not
over a grand. Get this, she gave me a discount! I would have cost $1350 or
$1375 some amount she spewed.
Now, I'm in the process of looking for someone to re-tighten me, at least.
I go in for training on the 20th and 21st, so I will re-tighten my
daughter's hair myself!

anyway? Are you planning to do your own re tightenings from then on? I wonder
how easy it is to work on yourself?
The class is approximately two hours long. For me, it's easier to sit
in the chair and let someone else retighten my hair. If I'm not
careful, I accidentally pull one lock into the other. It's not
impossible, but complicated to do without being able to see what I'm
doing. It's easy in the front because I can use a mirror, but I can't
use the tool in the back of my head. If I can't get to my consultant,
then I wait until my hair gets long enough in the back so that I can
retighten with my fingers, only, and not use the tool. This means that
the locks won't be tightend all the way to the scalp. I'm impressed
that Pat and Sigrid can sit and watch tv while retighten their hair. I
can't get into the tv show because I keep having to jump up to look in
the mirror to see what I'm doing. Another down side about working on my
own head is that my arms get tired from having them above my head.
Now for the good side... Retightening your own hair makes you
completely independent. No more waiting for someone else to get your
hair done. You could retighten at 2 in the morining if you so desire.
You can handle the slippage and not fear that the lock will completely
unravel. And the best part of all...you save money. Many women who
always retighten their own hair only see their consulants once or twoce
a year for grooming.
the front, medium in the mid-section, and large in the back. The
reason we put smaller-sized locks in the front is because most of us
only style the front of our hair. The smaller the locks, the more
style-ability you have...if someone has thin or thinning hair all
over, then we use smaller-sized locks to add volume to the hair.
Thanks for explaining the sizing, Kim. Now I understand why my
consultant put small locks all over my head. And each day I spritz
them with my water/tea tree oil mixture, they do look more voluminous
[yes, that's a real word :-)].

Typically, people with a short curl pattern have lots of elasticity in
their hair. If you pull on you hair to its full length, then BOING, it
draws back in to its shorter length, then you know you've got lots of
elasticity. When a consultant puts in your locks she/he pulls on the
lock to its full length to get the right amount of tension. If I
measure your hair with a ruler w/o stretching it out first, then I'm
cheating myself because once I start locking it, I will be stretching
it. Thus that 5 inches of hair might really be seven inches.
Hopefully the consultants here will post regarding size to give you
and the
The Sisterlocks standard for lock size is as follows: small in the
front, medium in the mid-section, and large in the back. The reason we
put smaller-sized locks in the front is because most of us only style
the front of our hair. The smaller the locks, the more style-ability
you have. We ususally just let the back hang or pin it up, so there's
no need to make the locks smaller there. However...if someone has thin
or thinning hair all over, then we use smaller-sized locks to add
volume to the hair. If someone has very dense hair, then larger locks
are better because it subdues the volume. If a person with dense hair
get small locks all over, then they have that "big hair" look. Now,
having stated all that, it's still the customer's choice. Some people
prefer the big hair look, while others don't mind if their hair doesn't
look voluminous (is that a word?). Anyhow, as long as you don't request
the size to be too big, we can do them. Once you go over a certain
size, the tool is useless because the lock will be too big for the
tool.
I can understand and fully agree that you get what you pay for and I am
$1,000.00 ??!! If you were asked to pay $1000, then I hope you have
thick, dense, coarse hair, and that the length is 17 inches long.
Otherwise, why is she asking for so much? Is she slowly trying to get
out of the business and this is her way of not attracting customers?
I'm wondering the same thing. I don't know if I'm going to take over my
maintenance completely, but my plan is to at least keep up with the back
because it grows twice as fast.

I was a little anxious, but not nervous at all. I was mostly impatient. I
knew for sure that this was what I wanted, and I just couldn't wait til my
appointment. I had to wait a few months to let my hair grow out enough to
get it done. I cruised the web every day. I read everything I could get
my hands on. With knowledge comes calm nerves. :-)
I had 4 test locks, and they were in the back where my hair is thickest and
nappiest. They were hard to find until after a few weeks when they started
forming a knot where the natural part meets the permed part. Keep in mind
I got my test locks in March and didn't have my locking session until
July... so I had lots of time to see and feel just what these test locks
were doing.
Wow! This statement really gets to the heart of the matter. You need to

Sandy,
Don't laugh, but you know I had failed to scroll all the way down, so
that's why I didn't know what ya'll were talking about. Now, if the locs at

Trell-
You know......I'm not sure what size my SL's are. I put in a call to my
consultant but she isn't in so I'll get back to you on that one.
Let me say this though, I think a certain amount of anxiety is normal because
this is a big step. I was nervous myself. Give thanks that you have this group
to help calm your nerves, I hadn't found this group when I got mine. Now back
to your situation.....I had 6 test locks put in somewhere in the top mid section
of my hair. I spent most of my time feeling thru my hair trying to make sure
they were still there. Sometimes I couldn't even find them. They were very
small, I think they seemed even smaller than they were because they were the
only ones there. The rest of my hair was in a big wooly mess. I know that a
couple of the locs came out before I had my session. I even worried that there
wouldn't be a pattern that would take in my hair. I was a mess! Now that my
Sisterlocks are in I can see what a waste of time all my anxiety was.
Ask yourself these questions. Have I done my homework about the process (looked
at pictures, gathered information and read information from the experts)? Do I
have a consultant that I trust? Have I seen pictures and/or talked to some of
her clients? Do I think Sisterlocks are for me? Do I have the patience to let

If you answer yes to these questions then I think you are probably ready to take
the plunge. Have faith - your hair knows what it wants to do. It's just waiting
for you to set it free!!!

BTW-Take it from me- if your hair is thick the parts will go away (I rarely see
mine only after re tightenings for about a week). And that's not worth fretting
over.

good 4 u sis, i cannot wait to see pics. I had
researched natural hairstyles for so long b4 getting
SL'd. After i made the decision I still had issues on
up keep and could I do it. I was betwixed and between
coils and SL's, not sure and not wanting to commit to
either until I was.
I also took alot of signs to mean SL's was the way for
me. First of all while wearing braids I asked for one
style and by the time my stylist was finished it was
not the style i asked for. I never get a style that
has me in a chair over 3 hours, this one had my booty
in her chair for 6 1/2 hours. I took that as a test.
Yes I did realized something was wrong after a period
of time lasped but what was I to do. (she had started)
Also I my gf who lives with me wanted traditional
locks, then all of a sudden she decided on SL's. This
from someone who never wanted thin locs..
those and a few others confirmed what my move was to
be next...
What was the deciding factor for everyone else if
their was a dilemna....What made you say later for it
all I'm doing this?
You're so right. Don't start getting into hair products just yet. I wanted
so badly to try various products, but it was six months before my
consultant gave me the OK. Sticking with the Sisterlocks starter shampoo
and moisturizer until the consultant tells you otherwise is the right way
to go.

And yes you did mention that you just love your Sisterlocks!!!!! LOL
Hello everyone.......
MY big day finally arrived. I was scheduled to have my Sisterlocks put in
yesterday, Monday March 5th. Of course wouldn't you know it that we were
expecting a HUGE snowstorm/blizzard (I live in NJ) from Sunday through
Tuesday. I was determined however and even if I'd had to walk I would have
gotten to my appointment. Luckily the snowstorm didn't do any of the stuff
it was supposed to and I got to my appointment and back home 12 hours later
with no problem. I took the change in weather to be a sign that I was truly
meant to get my SLs.
ANYWAY.....weather aside, my wonderful consultant took exactly 12 hours to
turn my thick bushy head into hundreds of beautiful, perfect little
sisterlocks. I started out with about 3 inches of all natural, very curly,
very thick hair, but she was so patient and so good. I love that woman!!!
. I LOVE my locks ladies. I hugged and squeezed and kissed my consultant
almost to death I was so happy. She was as excited as I was. I feel sooooo
good and yes I have parts and yes I have litle fuzzy balls on the end of my
locks, but I love it all. I got my sample locks put in about 2 weeks before
the actual day, and by the end of the two weeks they already looked
different.....better and better everyday. I know that this will be an
evolution and I am prepared to enjoy this journey, both good days and bad. I
want thank all of you on the group who have answered my questions and shared
your experience. I felt like I was not alone when making this decision, and
that made it so much easier. Those of you with websites, (Sandy, Pat,
Devon and others) I plan to follow your example. I am going to create my
own site. It shouldn't take me long, since this is what I do for a living!
We took lots of pictures and as soon as I get them from my consultant I will
post them to the group.
Thanks All (Did I mention that I LOVE my Sisterlocks)

Yep. Stick with the trained consultants, Aminah. I'm really afraid of the
copycats out there. I've heard stories of people who went to a
copycat/wannnabe and then ended up paying a *real* consultant to fix their
locks because it was a mess. Like you said... you get what you pay for.
Consultants only do micros if you ask for them. They are absolutely
beautiful but a *lot* of work. The initial session takes forever, and I
can't even think about the retightenings for microlocks. Most people don't
have the time or the money to get and/or maintain micros.
Hopefully the consultants here will post regarding size to give you and the

More often than not... If you are getting some type of

you may end up with something that is not what you
bargined for.
As far as what other people have to say about your

I have been growing my hair in its perfect natural

I just informed them that I'm going to loc at the end

Ghetto Fab Weave-wearers Of America, said "Why you
wanna do that?". After I rolled my eyes as hard as I
could I told her for the 100th time how beautiful our

never had my self esteem feel so good. Naturally, she

appointment, what will it be like regarding maintenance??? And,
since she uses "the tool" I would have to go to her for tightening.
(Seems someone in Columbus, Ohio taught her to do locs with "the
tool").
You know, the older I get the more I see you get what you pay for

take a biiig swallow, cough up the $$$ for Sisterlocks from a

leave with a smile and locs ta boot. I can't stand it when folk in
"business", don't handle their business. Ain't like I'm asking for a

I'm off to check our archives: only questions I have left deal with

Tressie Samuels, a consultant from Lithonia, Ga. found some that were

Now all I can say is, Sandy, you must have a very high tolerance for pain.
Me, myself, I am allergic to it, LOL. Although I have admired a few tatoos,
until they find a way to do it pain free, I will just continue to admire from
the sidelines:)

Be careful Aminah. If you're looking for Sisterlocks, make sure you're

I've learned that it hurts worse if you get it in places that don't have a

because they were right on the ankle-bone with very little flesh between
the skin and the bone. The one I'll get on my shoulder shouldn't be very

Missy - I'm addicted to books~
Hi All,
I have been on the list for quite a while & I have enjoyed reading about
everyone's journey into SL land. This past Sat. I went for a consultation in
Fort Lauderdale. At the time, my consultant was putting in locs for a new
client, but we talked a lot & I got to see some of her work. I really loved
the atmosphere of both her & her home. A while back I had asked you all if
all consultants work out of their homes b/c I had visited a consultant who's
home was a mess & I couldn't imagine spending endless hours there, well this
one was a big difference. She has a huge home & it was clean & very inviting.
I have an appt. for April 21st, but she figures that it may take all
weekend, so we may start that Fri. My hair is about 7'' in the top & 5" at
the nape, so it will cost me $400, which she said is a very reasonable, b/c
my hair is thick & longer than it appears. She hasn't been certified as yet,
but she's done about 8 clients & is taking an upcoming class this month & in
June. I got the SL kit & she put in a test loc so I can take care of it until
then. My only concern is that the loc seems small, but after looking at other
new locs, I see that's the norm. She also says that the locs will increase
100%. I am just concerned about the size & the parts, but she says they'll go
away soon. It's just that I have a big head (LOL) & I can't imagine what I
will look like w/ all those parts! Anyway, I will keep you all posted, just
wanted to share:)

Anya I sometimes don't. If I wake and I want the Bantu
Knots look then I leave them be, no finger movement in
my hair. If I want to look like Shirley Temple, then I
use my fingers to separately uncurl them and place
them as I see fit.
Most time I take them out and go work out by the time
I finish sweating my hair knows where it wants to be
and i leave it.
I really don't do much as far as styling b/c I love
looking wild

Kim,
Have you tried those do rags that the guys usually
wear? You know the ones that have the two long ties
and that little flap in the back? I am a very very
very wild sleeper and this is the only thing that I
can use to tie my hair down. You can buy them at
Family Dollar or Wal-Mart
As they get longer, you'll discover other tricks that you'll like. As the
length changes, you'll discover that maybe something that worked at 2
inches doesn't work at 4 inches. Or something that didn't work at 2 inches
works very well at 4 inches. These are just examples, but I'm sure you
know what I'm getting at.
Each stage is a new experience, and it's all part of the journey.
-- Sandy
This is wonderful! I can't say for sure that the rapid growth we
experience is due to the Sisterlocks specifically. But I can definitely
say that it's due to the fact that we aren't torturing our hair with
chemicals, preservatives, grease, and goonk all the time. Not using combs
and brushes helps too.
We are no longer doing things to our hair that retard growth or things that
cause breakage... so it can't help but get longer and longer!
I've noticed that everyone's Sisterlocks look different -- wet or dry. I'm
sure you're right in that it's due to the texture. Even my virgin hair
doesn't look like anyone else's. I always wanted my locks to look like
Pat's. But even my all-natural locks don't look like hers. But I love the
way they look! Sisterlocks is such an individual thing.. and they are
beautiful on everyone.
I especially love the look of my hair after it's gotten wet. I love that
fluffed-up kinky look. That's why I prefer to let it air dry. My hair
seems thicker and fuller then.

Well I love my hair more and more everyday...I can
feel the changes it is going thru. I can see my perm'd
ends are changing I think they are getting a lil kink

taken care of I was at 4". My next retighten is on
3/18, I cannot wait to see how much growth on this

Umm I haven't discovered anything b/c I don't do much
too it unless Sharon (loctician) tells me to. Im a
scardy cat..I have gotten them wet yesterday, but they
didn't look like my gf's I guess cuz hers are totally
kinky. She has no perm, just naps lovely bushy rounded
ends...

I can finally say that I love my locks. I have had them for seven
weeks now, but between the parts and unruly locks, I was unsure of my
decision for a while.
I got my locks with 2 inches of natural hair after wearing a TWA for
17 years (I stopped getting perms and cut my hair when I was pregnant
with my daughter). Even though I was happy with the freedom and style
of the TWA ( I was still getting compliments on my hair), I needed a
change after 17 years ( I still can't believe that I kept the same
hairstyle that long).
Anyway, I found a way that works for me to tame my unruly locks that
are now nearly 3 inches long. I sleep in one of those hair bonnets
and I have found that if I spritz my hair with water and pull the
bonnet down on my hair and let it dry naturally while I am getting
ready in the morning, the locks are more controlled.
Now, I truly do love my locks!!!
Diane
Missy, I just looked at your new pictures. You go gurl!!
Please share with us how your hair has changed over the past 3 months. How
fast does it grow? Can you feel the locks maturing? Have you discovered
any good tips or tricks that you can share with us?

I use them. I've heard that they're bad for the hair, but they work well
for me and my hair is doing just fine.
They are. The difference is that with regular sponge rollers, you have to
keep your hair rolled for hours. With the Caruso rollers they're only in
for a few minutes.
I heard somewhere that we shouldn't use end papers on natural hair. I
don't know where I heard this. Anyway, I don't use any end papers and I
don't have a problem.
I usually don't roll my hair at all, but most times if I use rollers,
they're the regular sponge rollers. I use the Caruso rollers occasionally,
and I use a curling iron on my bangs almost daily.

Anya, I take a sheet of alumium foil and tear it into
strips like chicken tenders. Then I roll the foil then
tear it in half. I take about 5 SL's and braid and
roll them on the foil paper. After I roll I then bend
the ends of the foil paper so it holds. Its just like
uses brown paper bag.
If I just want a coiley look then I will not braid my
SL's on the foil I will just roll them ....
After I wash my hair I leave my hair bundled until the
next day. Then when I remove the rubber bands and
unbraid my SL's they look like Bantu knots...I love
it..

Thank you for the information on cutting. Good food for thought. Made my

If others have info to share on this I'd love to hear it too.

Over time the tiny locks that look like braids will expand as they
begin the matting process. This is what cause them to thicken. Water
does help the process, not necessarily the shampooing. So if you just
want to run the shower over your locks without washing your hair, go
for it.

Yes, and you give good answers/comments, too. I appreciate all your

BTW, have you put up any newer pics of your hair?
Jennifer
I just want to remind you all that I'm not a Sisterlocks consultant. I'm
giving my thoughts and suggestions based on my experiences and the
experiences that I've heard from others.
If your consultant has told you not to wash your hair, then don't do
it. She probably had a reason for telling you this. If you're undecided
and have questions, by all means ask them here. But don't forget that you
can also call your consultant and ask her.
Our natural hair does love water, and getting it wet won't hurt
it. Shampooing your hair can be a problem *only* if you don't do it
right. Don't rub or scrub. Just squeeze the shampoo through your hair and
rinse rinse rinse.
If you're used to only washing every 3 or 4 weeks, then by all means
continue doing that. Sisterlocks aren't meant to cause you more
maintenence than you were used to before. And since we aren't putting a
lot of goops, gels, sprays, grease, etc. in our hair, there's no reason to
feel that it's dirty in a week.
I wash mine often because I love the feel of the wet kinky hair in my hands
and because I love the effect the water has on my locks.
We are all different. Listen to your consultant.

No. Just grab a bunch of locks and braid them together. The braids don't
have to be tight like normal braids. The purpose of braiding them together
is to hold them so that they don't get manipulated too much during washing.
You don't need to grab all the skinny ones together around your
hairline. Pull a couple of those into a bunch of larger locks. You don't
want to have 30 braids in your head. 10 or 12 should cover the whole head
in good-sized bunches.
NO. Do not twist your locks!! Braid them together loosely. Fold the
braid in half, and band it to hold it together.
That's exactly right. Don't rub or scrub.
-- Sandy
I have a better idea.
Rule #1. Never try something new with your hair when you're on a
vacation/resort/etc.
Give yourself a test run. Stick your head under the shower
tomorrow. Don't try to wash it or anything. Just get it wet. Dry it by
squeezing/pressing with a towel -- NOT rubbing. Then let it dry naturally
(your hair will love this). Or you can blow it dry. No fussing or
anything. Just wet it and let it dry.
That'll help you lose your fear of getting your hair wet, and then you'll
know you won't have any kind of catastrophe in the making while you're at
the resort.

you won't cause slippage. Instead of scrubbing into the scalp with
your fingertips as we've been used to doing all our lives, just
squeeze the bundles, working the shampoo through the hair in that
way... -- Sandy
Okay, after reading all the posts on this subject I think I'll try to
wash my locks this weekend. Now, I'm sorry if I'm about to ask a
really dumb question... but, here goes:
(1)Since my locks along the front hairline (and sides) are so teeny
(thin), will I have trouble unbraiding them after washing?
(2)Would it be better to do like 2-strand twists (only using several
of the locks instead of only 2) rather than actually baiding them
together?
(3)And, my consultant told me to put the starter shampoo in a spray
bottle and spray it on my scalp and hair so I wouldn't use too much.
So, I'm assuming all I need to do is sort of "press" the shampoo into
the bundles/scalp gently and not actually rub, right?
Unlike Sandy, I have never liked shampooing my hair or messing with
it too much (I'm really lazy... I don't wear makeup for that same
reason), so I tend to go a long time between shampoos. But, it makes
sense that washing your locks would help to facilitate the locking
process, so I'll give it a try. I'd appreciate any feedback anyone
can give me on above questions. Thanks...
Jennifer
Yep! My hair always looks gorgeous right after I wash it. The wet locks
are really beautiful.

You are soooo funny... thanks, Missy, I laughed so hard someone

I have had my SL's since 12/2/00 and my fear of
washing since I have perm on the ends, is:
I think the washing will cause slippage, even though I
bundle them. I do however notice my SL's appearance
looks better then my gf who got hers done 11/13, she
just washes hers every week and she doesn't bundle
them. Her slippage is extreme. Not only is it the
edges..its the sides nape and top of her head.
I also fear that I am messing up the pattern in my
scalp and my loctician will not be able to find it if
I keep at the washings. So I wash my hair once, and
that's b4 I get my tightenings. I work out everyday
and after I work out I run my silk cap along my scalp
with astrigent and a little essential oil.

I can't help you with that one. I don't particularly like the free sites
cuz they fill up your pages with all that crap. And if you don't have a
clue about html, then I *really* can't help you. There are places on the
web where you can create a free html template and you just fill in the
blanks. Check the search engines to find them. But I don't know how they
would work with the free sites, either because of all the extra stuff that
has to go at the top. Ask Devon about how angelfire works. I really don't
have a clue.
However, the HTML Writers Guild has beginner html classes that don't cost
much. Some of you may want to check it out at http://www.hwg.org.
If you're going to have web pages -- ones that you'll be updating
occasionally -- you really do need to know *something* about html.
They all give a lot of space. Check around the various free sites and
compare how much space you get. And remember you can save a lot of space
yourself if if you compress your files.
-- Sandy
Yeah, fear is a whole nother animal....but if you saw my hair after I washed it
you'd be pretty scared! I don't know about everyone else but my hair doesn't
even look the same. It's very puffy. If I had the patience to let it dry like
that the locks sort of look like locks but the top and front where my hair is
straighter is very "odd" looking with poofy ends. Not pretty (in a fashion
sense). I'm always amazed that after I roll it looks so good. Looking forward
to my locks maturing so I can wash and go. Actually I have planned to experiment
and let it dry on it own....when I take my trip to Mexico next month.....(that
way no one will see me) :-)

Yeah. That's really a pain, isn't it? I was *so* glad when my consultant
told me I didn't have to do that anymore.
But I've seen several people say that they are actually afraid to wash
their new Sisterlocks. It's not the braiding and banding that holds them
back, but they are afraid that the actual washing will harm their new
locks. I don't know why. Maybe it's something their consultants are
telling them. I know some people feel that it's best not to wash it at all

I was concerned when I first got my hair done, b/c my

me hair be and admire it as it goes along. Now that my

thickness thread a little.
Im still not a fan of getting my hair wet in the

reason. It is very nice to know I don;t have to run
for cover though...lol
You mentioned Wanda that they do get thicker...is that
b/c everytime you get them retightened your loctician
is tightening the new growth into an old lock?
If that is the case how do you stop them from being
really really thick. I know this sounds dumb, but I
looked at Dr Cromwells hair and she has length and
volume...but its not really thick. I like the width of
hers.

hair to lock quicker. Some people seem afraid to wash their hair after
getting Sisterlocks. I don't know why. If you do it right, I don't see
how washing can hurt, and I do see how it can help.<
I think (for me at least) it's the braiding and banding you have to do before
you wash it. I wash every other week and to be honest I really don't look
forward to it. I would do it weekly if I didn't have to band. It was especially
tedious in the beginning when my hair was shorter and then I have to roll it
since I prefer the curly style while my puffy ends are still unlocked. Just a
thought.
Devon
That makes sense to me. I do believe that the frequent washings helped my
hair to lock quicker. Some people seem afraid to wash their hair after
getting Sisterlocks. I don't know why. If you do it right, I don't see
how washing can hurt, and I do see how it can help.
And they really will, CC. Just wait. And you'll love it more every time
you wash it. I kept mentioning here how my hair just goto better and
better every time I washed it.
-- Sandy
My consultant told me the more you wash the quicker your hair will lock!
My Sl's are about two weeks old and I've washed them twice since having
them. I guess I'm eager for them to become fluffy and puff out!
CC
They're always teeny at first. Have you looked at the pictures on my
website? My locks were very skinny. They thickened up over time as they
matured. Yours will too.
Each consultant has their own preferences, so you should do whatever your
consultant told you. My consultant told me I could wash it whenever I
wanted to, just as long as I followed the instructions. I washed my hair
every week for the first 3 or 4 months. At six months my locks were mature
enough that I no longer needed to braid and band them for washing. I don't
know if my weekly washing helped speed up the locking process. Maybe it
did, maybe it didn't.
But our hair kinks up when it gets wet. My hair looked more and more like
locks each time I washed it. I could see it thickening up with each
shampoo. That's not to say yours will respond the same. Everyone's hair
is different. But washing can't hurt it... as long as you follow the
directions your consultant gave you.
Do what feels right for you. If you normally wash your hair every other
week... or whenever, continue doing so.... unless your consultant told you
something else. Just make sure you braid and band when you wash your hair,
and treat it gently... don't get rough and start scrubbing. As long as you
wash your hair correctly, it shouldn't harm your Sisterlocks.
-- Sandy
Okay, if I wash my hair more often than only the day before a
retightening then will my locks thicken up? By the way others have
described microlocks, I don't think I have those but mine are very
teeny. I had only planned to shampoo my hair before each re-
tightening, but if shampooing will help my locks to thicken then
maybe I'll consider washing them more often. But, having newbie
SL's, I didn't want to disturbe them too much either. I guess I need
some insight here.
Also, thanks to you all for the info on Caruso rollers and the
Lucy cap. I'll order the cap tomorrow and this weekend I'll shop at
the SuperTarget or K-Mart for the Caruso!
I'm sending a BIG Sisterlock hug to all...

My locks looked very much like yours in the beginning. They thicken up as
they mature. Water really helps them thicken, too, I think.

My SLs were tiny, or so I thought; they seem to get thicker every
day. They love water and soak it up like a sponge. I will go for a re-
tightening in about a week.
I love your pictures. Your hair look great.

The curl depends on the size roller you use, as always. They hold for a
few days. I've heard some say their curls lasted a week.
I started using the Caruso Hairsetter about 3 weeks after I got my
Sisterlocks. There's not really much heat involved. They don't get really
hot like curling irons. Plus they're only in your head for a few
minutes. It's the steam that sets your hair. Once the steam is gone, your
hair is ready.

Missy,
Thanks for doing the link and all the wonderful compliments. I want
to let you all know that my locks are doing their own thing now. They
haven't looked like those pics since they were first done! I won't be fully
locked for six months, so I'm just letting them flow freely!!

Yep. Probably cheaper at kmart though.
Can you provide a website where this cap can be purchased? Thanks,
Jennifer
