Check the Files section. Look in the Homecoming 2000 folder. I
named a picture Fatima. In the description I wrote "Angel and
Fatima." Angel is on the left.
Angel's picture is also in the Homecoming 2000 Yearbook.
I posted this list of commonly used Web Acronymns under

ones by looking at the old.

I'm no expert, but it sounds like you're washing your hair too often for
just starting locks.
Here's my suggestion. Go to a professional loctician and have them look at
it and see what you need. Don't tell them you want it retwisted... that
might not be what you need. Just tell them that you don't like the
fuzziness, and ask them to fix it and then tell you how to maintain it,
what to use, how often to wash, etc.

Hello everyone...I started the journey of locking my hair about six
months ago, but now I have no clue what to do. I began with comb
twist...I would wash them out and start over again about once a
month. Then in December, I had them twisted, but I have not taken
them out. I wash my hair other week, it has gotten quite long, but it
is very frizzy. I have read numerous books on naturasl hair care and
can't seem to get any information. Should I go to the shop to have it
retwisted??? Maybe just leave it alone and hope it will lock...or
mabe just start over again??? If any has any advice or encouraging
words I would love to hear from you.
Thanks!!!
I mentioned that I was curious about that, too. As far as I knew they
didn't have an email address.

Annais,
Congratulations on getting ready to get Sisterlocked.
In regards to your question, I have had my SL's for 1 1/2 years and have not
experienced any breakage or loss of loc's, as a matter of fact my hair is
healthier than it has ever been because I do not use any heat or do any of
the other damaging things to it the way I did in the past.
The only problem that I experienced was with the Starter Shampoo which caused
severe itching and flakes for me. I forced myself to use it for a couple of
months and then my consultant switched me to another shampoo and I have been
fine ever since.
Best of luck to you.
Anya
It's really easy. Take it from me. I took photos and uploaded them to my
computer and then to my new webpage (which I will announce in a few days).
Sandy is very helpful in getting the pictures compressed if they are too large.
Good Luck, look forward to your pics!

I just bought a digital camera and I want you to all know it's Sandy's
fault. She kept asking for pictures and I was tired of waiting for film
to get developed, then scan in the photos. Thanks, Sandy :)
As soon as I learn how to use the thing, I'll submit a photo of my
3-year old daugher sporting her SL.

Some consultants use smaller sized locks on clients with thin hair to
give the illusion of volume. Density determines parting size. If one
has hardly any density, then a larger parting size would be used just
to have enough hair to work with. Hope this helps.

I don't think you're bashing anyone, and I know what you mean... the
first time I called the home office I got no answer at all. After a
couple of tries, I got an actual live person who was able to answer
my questions. I have a small home/office also (even though I have an
office downtown as well) and I have separate lines for my

I don't think you are being unreasonable or "off track" at all. I
have also wondered about the eMail address. In the package the home
office sent me, their eMail address is listed on the printouts and
the brochures. After I got my SL's put in last week, I sent an eMail
to the Sisterlocks homeoffice telling them what wonderful consultants
they had, etc. I guess I shouldn't expect a response, huh... It's
too bad they don't have someone who can monitor that for them because
it seems to me that Sisterlocks is really catching on.

It is a small outfit. JoAnne created something wonderful, and it's growing
a lot faster than she predicted. She is a college professor and is unable
to give Sisterlocks her full-time attention. She is working on expanding
the office and things will get up to speed soon.
It's just that this is what happens when one opens a business and it starts
growing by leaps and bounds. The average home-based business doesn't have
the infrastructure in place to deal with a quickly growing nationwide
customer base. I give great praise to JoAnne for her endeavor.
Keep in mind that I said "it looks like"... that is what was occurring. I
don't actually know that they're sharing a line between the phone and the
fax. Every time I've called the home office I've either gotten a live
person or an answering machine. I've never gotten a fax machine.
Please don't take my "guess" as a statement of fact.
Actually, I was unaware that they had an email address. I know they used
to, but they were getting thousands of emails per month and simply couldn't
respond to them. The web site states this very clearly.
You're not on the wrong track... you're just moving a little faster than
they've been able to move. It'll all get there. It just takes time... and
people..
I agree with you that the web site leaves a lot to be desired. I
understand why some of the things aren't there, and I know that JoAnne is
working on that. There are also some thing that I think should be there no
matter what. An email with an autoresponder, like you mentioned, is one of
those things.
I'm a freelance web designer, and would I *love* to be able to work on that
site! There is so much that I could do with it. Whenever I start thinking
that way, I have to remember that not everyone knows how to do all that
stuff, Sisterlocks isn't JoAnne's full-time gig, and she's working on
bringing everything up-to-date -- including the web site. But it takes
time. I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with it.

Visited loctitian yesterday afternoon. I'm all twisted up now. And
lo and behold, got compliments from a couple co-workers (not that I
needed that validation).
Instructions from my loctitian were:
1) Allow no water to touch my head
2) Get back with her in a couple weeks for shampoo, re-twist
3) Put no oil on it.
4) Use end of a rattail comb to scratch scalp when it itches.
Wellll alllright, the journey begins in earnest.

None of them are micros. Pg. 129 - average sized locks, pg. 136-small,
and pg. 167- medium-small locks on sides and top, average size in back.
Many of my locks are micro on the sides and top of my head. Check out
my folder in the Pictures portion of our Files section. Also, go to the
Sisterlocks website and click on their photo gallery. One of the models
whose hair is hanging straight down has micros. The site is at http://

Hi everyone,
I don't post often unless I REALLY have something to say...But I was
reading the posts about different lock sizes and I thought I'd throw
this question out there. I have fine, thin, but pretty kinky hair
and I was wondering (if any consultants could offer advice) what
size locks are best for thin hair. My consultant gave me medium size
locks in the back and I guess small locks in the front and sides.
After reading some of the posts on both sisterlock egroups about
ladies who had locks actually break off I started to get worried and
asked my consultant to lock some of the smaller ones together.
Although they were thin, my locks were strong but I was afraid they
would get weak later and break off. Plus the locks were so thin that
a lot of scalp was showing.
Well, after I took the retightening class I started locking more of
the skinny locks togther. Now my hair looks fuller and I'm less
afraid that my locks are going to snap off. I'm comfortable with the
size of my locks now but I was just wondering what the size lock is
recommended for thin hair.
Thanks,
Lakevia

Have a wonderful day Pat
I have fast growth in the back. It grows almost twice as fast as the rest
of my head. After I take the retightening class next month, I'm planning
to retighten only the back as it needs it, and the rest of my head less often.
I have learned a way for my head. As the new growth comes in and the hair
at the scalp is loose, the stray strands of hair reach out and grab the
locks. This is why we have to separate our locks after each
shampooing. Well... as my hair grows out more, I have to separate my locks
more often -- not just after a shampoo. When it gets to the point that I
need to separate my locks every day, it's time for a retightening.
But that's just my way of doing it cuz I get tired of separating the locks.
:-) Others just do it on a set schedule of weeks. Some base it on how
they like their hair to look, i.e. when the edges start to look too
scraggly they get it retightened. Each person has their own preference,
and you will learn what to do based on your hair, what it does, and what
you like.
Are you sleeping in a satin scarf? You should always sleep in a satin
scarf or on a satin pillowcase. I recommend Maverick Scarves

No pictures, yet. I will upload as soon as I get

is the difference between sisterlocs and traditional
locs.
Sable----
Hi Pat,
I love Grace but I can't afford her. I agree when you say that our
Consultant has done a great job but, from what I'm hearing a 10 hour
retightening session is not normal even for micros. I was going every
6 weeks but I was still spending about the same amount of money. When
we discussed her prices our Consultant requested that I post online
to find out if everyone else's Consultant tightened down to the root
and to find out how much new growth everyone had when they went for
their retightenings. I even asked if I had slippage so that I may
correct any mistakes that I may have made but she insisted that it
was all new growth and not slippage (except for around the edges,
which everyone has). I'm trying to hang in there but $200 is more
than I can afford. The #1 reason I got locs was to cut down on time
spent in the salon and to cut down on the amount of money I spent on
braids and fake hair. I'm finding that locs are just as expensive and
even more time consuming.

I was wondering if anyone else go through the fast
growth also. Now I have a question, for us newbies,
how do you know your hair needs re-tightening? Is it
ok to go every 3-4 weeks or best to wait? What do you
all think and experience?
I have only 2 1/2 inch SL hair then 1 inch of perm'd
ends. My first re-tighten I decided it was time b/c my
edges was looking takcy. I am learning this is
something that happening after 1 week. My edges don't

I just pulled apart 3 matted locks on the nap of my

I had my hair twisted in NY while I was home for

who would do it for a reasonable price so, I would do
it myself. Everyones hair is different. It was better

it loc'ed. However, since you are having a hard time
finding someone you should do it yourself. At least,
until you find someone. You will eventually.

Hello ladies,
I've been lurking on your site for a while now, reading quite
enviously of all the wonderful things you have been saying about your
hair. I've always wanted to get sisterlocks. I've had my hair natural
for years and have followed the progress of the style from a cult to
now a full-blown phenomenon. However, I live in the United Kingdom
and there aren't any technicians here. I am from Miami and will be
going to Florida in the near future to see family. I want to get my
hair done while there -- but, i wont be able to get back for the
tightenings like you're supposed to. I'd like to be able to do them
myself. Is it possible? Can you retighten your hair yourself so early
on? Any suggestions, or should I just forget about it. I'm sorry taht
moving back to Florida isn't an option right now. I just got a
fabulous job with the BBC and I need to see how that plays out.
Thanks for all your help.
Kaylois in Birmingham (England, that is).
I certainly don't think so. You have to remember that this is a different
society and hundreds of years have passed. While these things may have had
those meanings way back then, they certainly don't now.
A shaved head and perms are style choices. They have nothing to do with
one's connection with God or one's sanity *unless* a person is a member of
a group/religion/whatever that embraces those beliefs.
That's how I see it anyway. :-)
-- Sandy
My heavens!! What is wrong with people?!?! Why on earth did it take 10
hours to retighten your hair? How much hair do you have? How long had it
been since your last retightening? Did you have a lot of blowouts or
something?
3/4 to an inch if I go 8 weeks (which is my plan in the future... I like my
hair when there's a lot of new growth at the scalp).
She used to until I asked her to leave it a little loose. I like my hair
better that way. Less definition in the parts, and more ease in styling.
I don't think that's normal at all. It shouldn't take 10 hours. I can see
3 hours for 8 weeks of new growth -- maybe even 4 with a new,
slower-working consultant. But not 10. No way.
That's B.S. You can wait 8 weeks between retightenings. It depends on
your likes, needs, and financial abilities, and of course your consultant's
skill and speed.
I think that the first couple of times you get a retightening, you
shouldn't go much longer than 6 weeks. After that, you and your consultant
can gauge how fast your hair grows and you can then decided just how long
you want to wait between visits. Since I like my hair when it's loose at
the scalp, I decided to give it 8 weeks. Others may like to keep their
hair tighter, and they may choose 6 weeks -- or even 5.
Take your preference into consideration, and your consultant's pricing
(which you should be aware of *ahead* of time), and put the two together to
decide how long you want to go between retightenings.
I can't help you with that part. I never had any slippage (lucky me) so I
can't really comment on that. I still don't think it should take 10 hours
though.
I'll be interested in hearing others here answer these questions.
Keep in mind that each consultant sets her own pricing, but there still
should be a "normal" range in there somewhere.
-- Sandy
Hi Lawanza,
I live in Houston, although I now do my own retighten, My consultant
only charges me $75.00 and it usually takes her 3-4 hours to complete
the job. I can only go 4 weeks between retighting. Maybe 8 weeks is
too long for you. How old are your sisterlocks? At 6 months, my
consultant taught me how to retighten myself.

Is anyone else reading Hair Story? It is a new book that just came
out in January. I like the first few pages of knowledge. Please
excuse my ramblings but if anyone have any thoughts about this,
please
write back.
In the first few pages, the authors talk about the spirtual
signifigance of hair in many African societies, "The hair is the most
elevated point of your body, which means it is the closest to the
divine...because a person's spirit supposedly nestled in the hair,
the
hair dresser always held a special place in community life (pgs.
4-5)."
Then on the next few pages, the authors say that the first things
slave traders did was to "shave the heads of their captors. This
apparently was a disgrace. It says that the captives had no identity
and without hair none of the slaves knew "who was who" and this would
also mean a disconnection not only from culture but from God (my
personal observation).
Please humor me a little more... There is also a discussion about
unkempt hair--meaning any hair that is unstyled or not taken care
of--you were thought to be insane, depressed or suffering from
dementia.
My two questions are--many, many African Americans shave their heads
in a cultural sense does that mean that they are having an identity
crisis and are possibly disgraced or disconnected from God and
relaxers withstanding is broken hair, permed or otherwise, considered
a form of insanity or dementia?
One last thought or question. I remember talking to an older friend
of mine from Guinea, she always wondered why African Americans wore
Afros. I have never understood why she questioned the Afro, I always
saw it as a statement of black power and pride--(disjointed from my
culture, apparently!). Some Afros are just free and unkempt--help me
now, is this also a form of dementia or insanity? I mean, if the way
you wear your hair says something about your status in society etc.
Isn't it crazy then to a free full afro without any adornments etc.?
I am dying for others' comments on this one.--Alicia

10 HOURS!!! My consultant wanted to charge me $200.00 but after a
little discussion she was kind enough to lower it to $150.00.
My question(s) is this:
How long does everyone else's retightening sessions last?
How much new growth (in inches) do you have when it is time to be
retightened?
How much do your consultants charge you for retightenings?
Does your consultant tighten all the way down to the scalp?
Is my situation normal? Should it take 10 hours and $200? If so I
will stop complaining.
My consultant says that it takes 10 hours because she goes all the
way down to the scalp and that I should not wait 8 weeks to get a
retightening. She recommended that I come every 6 weeks but when I
was doing that I still spent at least 8-12 hours in the salon getting
a retightening. My consultant also says that I have on average 1 inch
of new growth but in a lot of spots I have as much as 1.5-2.0 inches
of new growth. I believe that my "new growth" is actually slippage
but my consultant says that it is not.
Sorry to be so whiney but my loc maintenance is breaking my wallet
and I just wanted to find out if this is normal.
Broke but still loving my locs,
Lawanza

Bev,
I attended a styling and maintenance class at the Sisterlocks
Homecoming last summer. The presenter, Yvonne Mobley, suggested that we
not use permanent hair color on our locks. She recommended semi-
permanent hair color. If you check back in the archives (look under
Homecoming, I think), you'll see a list of notes that I shared with
everyone from the class. I posted it in August, I think. Off the top of
my head, I think Clairol's Jazzing was recommended. Are your locks
mature? Coloring new SL isn't good because you'll have to condition
your hair after coloring. The conditioner is what blows out the SL.

Sis did you find them?
Never mind my previous query, found 'em. Thanks for sharing Alicia.
Beautiful smile, beautiful face, beautiful family. The photo of the
back of your head showing your locs . . . . WOW. The more I see 'em,
the more I love 'em. Girl, do ya keep yo hands in ya head???? I
would!! :)
Jennifer,
Congratulations!!!
The journal idea to track your thoughts, feelings and progress is a wonderful
idea. I wish I had done that.
Best of luck to you (although I don't believe you will need it).

Twisted yesterday, the back is whack, hit, ugly and anything else I
can't think of right now. Reading this was a pick-me-up this a.m.
I'll call Everette's and see if the "learn basic" hairlocking is open
to folk like me (and affordable).
Thanks ladies, your stories are very encouraging. I know this can
be, no will be done . . . eventually.
Hotep!
Does anyone have recommended suggestions for what coloring/tinting products
to use on Sisterlocks®? I would prefer something natural that is going to
color my gray.
I tried to go completely natural when I got my locks. I've had gray hair
since I was 16 and I've discovered, since I haven't colored my hair in a few
months, that I have too much of it to feel comfortable with right now.
I don't consider myself a vain person but, my gray hair makes me look much
older than I really am and does have an impact my financial life in terms of
promotions and future employment.
My consultant does not use coloring agents. Any suggestions?

It'll lock. Like you said, it just may take a little longer. It sounds
like you've done your homework, understand the process, and are ready for
this. That will help your locking time and your satisfaction with your hair.
Greeting All:
Four months, after making the decision to go Sisterlocks, I had my
consultation today with Sisterlocks consultant/trainer, Barbara
Bramwell. . .got my 'test' locks and made my appointment for my new
lifestyle! I'll keep you all posted as my journey progresses. I have
fine hair with a loose curl pattern (a result of mixed-up Creole
Afro-Native American-European heritage) so locking will take some
time. But, I'm committed, focused, and very excited!
Barbara was conducting a re-tightening class prior to my appointment,
so I got to see sisters from age 11 to ??-something with all types of
hair sporting their Sisterlocks. . .and they all looked GREAT!
Sandy, I daily reviewed the E-groups message board, and was so happy
after you get the job? And just how much time are you talking about
anyway?
I don't know how long its going to take to find "the" job -- I'm not
done with school until July, so job prospects probably won't open up
until maybe May or June. To be honest with you I am so anxious to
finally do something that I've wanted to do for so long, I just want
to dive in.
I noticed that.I looked at Missy's pictures and her hair looked nice
and the parts weren't that pronounced.
If I go that route, I would definitely take that hot thing off as
soon as possible!
Thank you for your thoughts!
If it's the parts you're worried about, why not get the Sisterlocks after
you get the job? And just how much time are you talking about anyway? The
parts aren't prevalent for very long?
I don't think a wig would be damaging, as long as you take it off as soon
as you get home.
-- Sandy
Hello All!
I hope this isn't an offensive question but I need to ask -- I'm
planning on getting my locks in the very near future -they've been
calling me for years, but I need to know if once I get my locks would
they be damaged by my occasionally wearing a wig. The wig is for job
interviews and future employment during the probationary period.
I really don't like the thought of covering up my locks but I'll be
finishing up a degree soon and I've noticed from Sandy's and Pat's
web sites that the parts are ever-present during the early stages,
and I know that look would not be "acceptable" in job interviews --
I'm just being realistic about those with the power to hire.
So please let me know your opinions and whether or not the wig would
be damaging.
Thank you all,
V
Hi Alicia!!
I just got home. Ignore my responses to your private emails. I checked
the files area, and your pictures are fine. I just looked at them, and your
Sisterlocks are beautiful!! How long did you say you've had them?

I finally was able to post pictures in the files section from the

was referred to a wonderful consultant. He charged me $840.00 for
the sisterlocks, and $150.00 each for three retightenings, I never
received a starter kit and was treated like an intrusion. (I was
ripe for the classic rip-off).
Whoa... what a rip-off... $840! My certified consultant only charged
me $500 and that included the consultation, locking session, starter
kit and instruction, and my first re-tightening session (in four
weeks). I'm sorry you had to start off with someone taking advantage
of you like that. But, at least you were referred to a real
consultant eventually. Believe me, the only reason I wasn't ripped-
off is because I'd read a lot of information about SL from this group
and called the Home Office before going to a consultant, so I knew I
was going to a certified Sisterlock consultant.

Well well well....Im finally home. I had a wonderful time at
DisneyWorld.
I hear many of us saying this place is not for us, I think those who
have said it have never gone. I had a great time dancing with the
LionKing, and hanging with the many characters there to entertain me
and others.
Im not a cartoon person nor fantasy stuff, but I plan to reant these

LionKing
Aladdin
Beauty and the Beast

These all left a wonderful impression on me. Wow the shows were fun
and performed with great expertise.
I plan to go back to:

Universal Studios
Magic Kingdon was for the 4yr old that was with us....lol
Missy
I take it that you mean the untrained guy (I call them impostors and
copycats) is the one who charged the $840 and $150, right?
I'm so sorry you went through this. At least he didn't mess up your
hair. This kind of thing is the reason we've put those suggestions in our
welcome message. It's so important for people to do their homework before
choosing a consultant. Even at normal prices, Sisterlocks can be an
expensive proposition. It's best to go with someone who has been properly
trained.
I'm glad you've found a good consultant, and doubly glad that you're loving
your hair!
Btw, since you're in Detroit, I hope I see you at the Regional Sisterlocks
Conference in April. If you haven't heard about it yet, check out

-- Sandy
Hello,
I've just joined the group and I've had my sisterlocks for 6 months
and I absolutely love them. It was the best decision of my life.
After years of pressing, perming, braiding, weaving and overall
destroying my hair, I'm finally free.
My sisterlocks started very shaky, I went to a stylist that was not
trained nor certified in sisterlocks in Detroit, but the shop he
worked out of was listed on a website for locks. After my
consultation, waiting for my appointment and the actual process, I
was still fat, dumb and happy with my hair. At my third
retightening, he made me feel as if I was a burden and he resented
the time sisterlocks took away from his regular clientele, he also
cut my hair, which I found out later was wrong. After calling the
home office, I discovered he was not trained and was referred to a
wonderful consultant. He charged me $840.00 for the sisterlocks, and
$150.00 each for three retightenings, I never received a starter kit
and was treated like an intrusion. (I was ripe for the classic rip-
off).
But it all turned out well, my locks are forming nicely, my
consultant is great and I'm loving my hair.
Jennifer, CONGRATULATIONS!! I am so happy and excited for you.
Oooooohhh... this is gonna look great in a very short amount of time!!!
Jennifer you go gurl!!! We wanna see some pictures as soon as you can get
them.
-- Sandy
Hi, Sandy and everyone... well, I got my SL's put in by Karen at the
Sincerely Yours Day Spa (here in Dallas) yesterday and I am simply
fascinated by them! The process is soooooo different from getting
your hair braided. Karen laughed when I told her she didn't "work my
neck" like whenever I'd get my hair braided. Anyway, the process was
smooth, she took pictures before, during, and after, and will give me
a set when I go back in four weeks. I must say that I do look like a
plucked chicken (sorta), but I know that won't last too long. She
made by locks very small all over, so the spaces really show. I had
5-6 inches of nappy hair, so the length is pretty nice. I thought my
hair was very nappy, but my consultant showed me the different
textures I have on my hair. I can't believe I'm finally on my way...
And, to my surprise, my daughter liked it.
My consultant told me to lightly mist my hair with water that has an
essential oil added (I use tea tree oil) and roll on small rods in
the morning. Then, while I getting showered/dressed, my hair should
dry and be curled. Well, I practiced this morning so see if I could
do it myself. It worked exactly like my consultant said it would!
And the curls are really cute. I can't wait to share some pictures
with all of you. Thanks for all of your encouragement and
information over these past months. I also started a journal (as of
yesterday) about my decision to get SL, how the process went, how I
felt, etc. I'm doing this mainly for myself, to chart my thought
processes sorta. Anyway, I feel really good.

I am sitting here at my desk wondering what it would be like if I
wasn't able to hear the point of views of other women and men who
share my beliefs on beauty. My sister just cut all her hair off. She
has a cesar cut. It looks great. Her goal is to join us eventually on
the Sisterlocks Journey. The response from women has been lukewarm,
surprisingly, the brothers are representin. They love it. She has
alot of strength and pride, so she will be fine. I am so excited that
she is joining us. I just wanted to share that with all of you.
Peace

I have said this many times. If Black women knew that they would not
have to cut their hair and they could wear the traditional styles,
many would get Sisterlocks. Most people that I meet have never heard
of Sisterlocks.

Hello Sandy,
So glad your site was mentioned at Moyosafi's. I recalled it being mentioned
a while back and I just got busy and forgot about it. I have been scanning
the archives and can tell I am going to really like it here. The photo files
are great and the energy fantastic.
I have had my SL's for 19 months now and I am still loving them. I have not
experienced one day of regret.
I am in a new phase now in which I have stopped rolling and feel really good
about it. It's funny...I was recently reflecting on my transitional growth
and started laughing at all of the things that I just got sick of and stopped
doing to my hair over the years. I started with ditching the perm 7 years
ago, then I quit the braids after 3 years, I sped pass the press & went into
the ponytail phase for a little over a year; then I two strand twisted &
twisted out for a year. When I got my Sisterlocs I was more than happy to
give up the comb & brush (seems like I had about 10 of them things...the wide
tooth, medium tooth, rait tail, shampoo brush, styling brush, one for purse,
glove compartment,etc...whew)! I have always enjoyed rolling my hair (or at
least thought I did), perhaps I was in denial and didn't figure this was an
option, but a necessity. Anyway, in the beginning it was necessary for me to
have curls because it helped me through the settling phase. Well, when the
new year came in...the light came on that the rollers were out. It has been
a month and I have not touched a roller and it has been great. It is truly
amazing how much time I have added to my life by shedding a few things. Think
I'll save that rolling stuff for the special occasions.
It's funny because I am sensing that some of my family, friends and community
supports are wondering whatz up with me. This even freer look is subtly
jolting those who had finally gotten used to my (curly) loc'd look. You have
to know when I first started this journey the majority of my loved ones were
die hard perm junkies as I was reluctantly (a few have actually converted).
First they try to sneak a peek at my new do, but remain silent, then some
have later said "I kinda like your new look" one even said "You can wear
anything and get away with it." I cracked up then accepted the backhanded
compliment graciously and said a little prayer for 'em...after all most
really mean well.
Anyway, I said all of that to say, each day is a new adventure with new
insight to self. I have never been so pleased with my hair and have never
done so little to have such a good feeling.
I am pleased to be here with you all. I look forward to the connection.
Anya
Yes, my consultant actually locked my broken off hair. It's now 4-5
inches long on both sides and around the nape. And, as I said, it
looks better than the top which was started with permed ends.
No, I want be able to attend. I live in So. California. I am,
however, looking forward to this year's homecoming in San Diego.
Fredia
Exactly. I know that many people don't like Sisterlocks for that very
reason... Sisterlocks allow you to wear your hair natural and still be able
to style it in traditional styles. Some folks think that's a copout. I
don't see it that way. Natural is natural. How the natural hair is styled
is just an individual choice, and all choices -- whether afro, traditional
locks, sisterlocks, or whatever -- are equally valid IMO.
-- Sandy
Hi Everybody:
On my way home from work, I got to thinking about a few things that
Aminah e-mailed me about traditional locks vs. sisterlocks. In her e-
mail she also mentioned Dr. Cornwell's book. Lots of thoughts came
to my mind about the book in general. One, I really liked it. I
read it about one month after I had my sisterlocks when I was hungry
for a discussion. A part of me devoured the books--I am well read.
I have some of anything from Angela Davis to Robert Kiosaki (the
financial literacy guy). I have several hair books about how to
style etc. but none of them touched on the psychological aspect in
the same way that Joanne Cornwell did--she captured the Black woman's
quest through her own personal experience of what to do with our
hair. Can't tell why I felt so sentimental except perhaps I was
vulnerable but something about what she said rallied me or made me
feel as if I were a part of a bigger mission. I felt as if
sisterlocks was one answer of bridging the gap between european hair
styling and african locks. Maybe that's good or bad but I can't help
thinking that not all black women would be ready to leap into
traditional locks but many would move to sisterlocks especially the
micro-mini locks because they could maintain the style and I couldn't
help but compare Joanne Cornwell with Madame CJ Walker in that Walker
brought in a new era for black hair at the turn of one century and
Cornwell at the turn of the 21st century. I know this may sound a
bit corny and I am normally not so but having sisterlocks makes me
feel a part of something larger. What about others?--Alicia

Hey, thanks for the article. I'm printing it as I type this
message. I love reading stories about others' experiences with their
hair (since I've had so many of my own).
Hi Sandy:
I have had sisterlocks for about 10 months. I love them and my
husband is sick of me talking about hair! ;-) What has worked for me
the most is just leaving my hair alone and letting it form on its
own.
I realize that I have had ten months without a comb! It didn't dawn
on me until I was washing and blow drying someone else's natural hair
and then it hit. My hair seems to love being locked. I still have a
few personal issues with the societal stigma that comes along with
locking but in general, I have learned to love my hair and myself
even
more.
Did anyone read this article in the Detroit Free Press?

Your message was posted. I've never known anyone's message to not get

texture and curl pattern determine whether you'll have some strands of
hair sticking out. The Home Office doesn't have enough "woman power" to
handle an 800 (toll free) number. There's only one person working part
time to handle phone messages and supplies. Over the next few months,
their operation will grow. Perhaps then, they'll get an 800 number.
They do have a wealth of information at their website. Check out

The consultation and locking session are pretty much never done on the same

find a good consultant at the Conference who comes from your area. You
never know!
If you get it done here in Detroit, you'll have to drive back every 6 to 8
weeks for the retightenings.

Minah,
You only need an inch and a half of new growth to get Sisterlocks. Some
people recommend 4 inches just so you'll have some hair to work with
for styling. Otherwise, your inch and a half of hair will stick
straight out. You'd spend a lot of time rolling it on small perm rods
for a beautiful curl. So, don't wait for the grass to grow, get your
sisterlocks. You've worn a fade, so I'm assuming you're comfortable
with wearing short hair for a while.
Sandy,
I've been reading your comments here and I'm thinking should I choose
the S.L. route, I'd be interested in your technician (I'm assuming
she's in Detroit). Regarding this "consult", are they ever done the
same day service is applied, or do I have to travel back and forth?
I would need to add travel expense to hair service expense if that's
the case.
Just curious??!!
You need 2" of hair to get Sisterlocks, not 4. You should check out JoAnne
Cornwell's book "That Hair Thing and the Sisterlocks Approach". It
explains it all.
You can get her book on my site,

I am getting so ansy waiting on my hair to grow so I may begin
locing. Yeah, yeah, I'm whining!! :( Messed around and got a bald
fade, THEN decided I was woman enough to loc . . . duh!!!!
It's my understanding I need 4" of hair to get Sisterlocks, so
decided to go with cultivated locs. The loctitian told me to
wait 'til my hair grew longer (that was in December - actually she
told me to wait six weeks). Well, during all this waiting I am
checking out Sisterlocks (want to attend the reg. conference).
It just seems as if it's taking 4 eva to get 4" of hair . . . geez.
Wanna know the funny thing? When I was wearing a Wave Nouveau it
seemed my hair grew out of the wazooo. Every time I turned around
seemed time for a touch-up. Now it seems to be creeping along only
because I am soooo excited about locing it up. I keep doing things
like washing and oil treatments to keep self busy waiting for the
growth. Also, meantime, I'm reading you guys stories and lovin' it
to death. Keep on locin and lovin! :)
Hope to see you all in Detroit, April, 2001.

going to plan on attending. Not locked yet (I'm a loc wannabe)!
Been reading these digests lately and after a while you feel like ya
kinda know some folk, if only just a little. Will be nice to put
faces with dialogue AND see your hair.
Proud of you all. Keep locin' and lovin'
I have gray around my edges too and I use a color touch up stick. I get them
from the drug store and they come in an array of colors. One brand I"I've used
is called Tween Time. It washes right out so shouldn't be harmful to your hair.
Ask the person in the cosmetic department as they are not easily found unless
you know where to look.

The ingredients in the rinse are:
Rosemary leaves
Nettle leaves
Peppermint leaves
Lavender blossoms
Powdered sage leaves
Please send me the digest form of this group.

Kim, I have a question about your slippage: did you have all nappy
hair when you got your SL or was a part of it relaxed? I do
understand that not all black folks have the same texture of nappy
hair and I'm trying to get a feel for why yours is taking this long
to mature. My SL consultant told me that I would probably not be
locked for up to nine months because my hair is soft, fuzzy/nappy,
but that it might just mature a lot sooner. Can you give some more
details, please. Thanks.

Worry does not empty tomorrow of its sorrows; it empties today of its
strength.

TODAY IS THE TOMORROW.. YOU WORRIED ABOUT YESTERDAY...
Was it really worth it?
I will be happy when my hair is longer so that the locks can be cut at least
to the same length. I have some locks that are very short. I would like to
see some styles with the Sisterlocks that are short. I am not really so much
into having super long hair. I just want my to look very full and healthy.
The thing that I want now is a dye job. My hair is doing so well that I am
afraid to do anything that may cause problems or damage. Usually I put
mascara around the hair lines and that is working for now since that is where
I am gray. The gray hair is kind of wild also. I can see it sticking out of
the locks. I had recently colored my hair before I got my locks so about
half way down the lock my hair is auburn. I know that come summer I am going
to want to color my hair again.
Has anyone had a successful dye job with locks? What did you use?
I want to try that procedure where you put lemon juice on the tips and go out
in the sun. Has anyone tried that? That seems safe but it does not cover
the gray at the hairline.

Oh f*(#k! Wouldn't you know I left my camera on. It's been on for TWO
WEEKS! Needless to say, the battery is dead. So I won't be taking any
pictures today. Hopefully I'll get a battery this weekend.
