I did it!!
There's a picture in Joanne's book and other Sisterlocks brochures,
websites, etc. with a hairstyle that I fell in love with the first time I
saw it. Today I went for a retightening and realized my hair is the
perfect length for this cut. So I pulled out Sheila's Sisterlocks photo
album, found the picture, and asked her to cut it like that. I just needed
it to be tapered and shaped because I hated the way it hung in the back.
She did a perfect job! It doesn't look any shorter, but it looks better
because the haircut has a shape to it -- as if someone put some thought
into it. Anyway, I love it! I'll take pictures tomorrow.

Re: Shampooing - WOW!

2007-03-31 06:47:01

Careful Sandy. You're sounding like the Herbal Essence shampoo
comercials...you know, the one with Dr. Ruth? HaHaHa I can't wait to
try that shampoo.
Sandy, you're so lucky. I'm in my 14th month of Sisterlocks and I still
have slippage and have had to go back to using the Starter Shampoo.

Re: [LockItUp] Questions???

2007-03-31 05:34:20

I'm guessing you mean the stage when your short locks are going in every
direction and refuse to be tamed. I didn't have that stage because I kept
my length and permed ends. I think I recall Pat talking about going
through the awkward stage, though. I think the fact that Sisterlocks can
be rolled and styled helps to eliminate or at least lesson that kind of
unruliness in the baby locks.
No. There's nothing at all painful about it.
Have you checked out consultants in your area yet? There are some in

Questions???

2007-03-31 00:32:06

I've been natural for five months, and I'm currently wearing braid
extensions. I've viewed the SisterLocks site and read your postings,
and now I have a few questions?
Do SisterLocks have an "awkward" stage like other locking techniques?
If you've had braid extensions done, you know that it can range from
uncomfortable to painful, is this experienced with SisterLocks?
and finally,
I live in South Georgia, is anyone out their close to my area?
From what I've read and seen in your postings, SisterLocks is truely
a beatiful expression of our natural hair. Thank you in advance for
taking the time to answer my questions.

Your hair looks great! One question: how did you roll your hair? Did
you use perm rods or something else?
Dawn

I used medium to large perm rods to roll my hair.

Re: [LockItUp] Shampooing - WOW!

2007-03-30 07:58:08

I guess so. My locktician told me I could use whatever I want. I didn't
have a hard time rinsing it. But there may be a difference here because
Dr. Bronner's is a natural castille shampoo -- not the over-the-counter
stuff that's made with detergents.
Is that the SL tea tree shampoo? Are you still on the starter shampoo? I
can't remember how far along you are in the process.

Shampooing - WOW!

2007-03-30 05:42:04

I just got finished washing my hair. I used the almond Dr.
Bronner's. WOW! I have *never* gotten so much lather in my life! This
stuff is something else! I squirted my normal amount on my hair, and as
soon as I touched it the lather was everywhere! When I lathered up the
second time I made sure to use about half my normal amount.
The aroma of the almond was delicious; and since this was the first time
I've washed my Sisterlocks without braiding and banding, the whole
experience was an absolute pleasure. The feel/texture of my wet
kinky/locked hair was almost sensuous! And this stuff actually left my
hair moisturized. Think of that -- a shampoo that *really* moisturizes --
naturally! Who'dathunkit!! I can't wait to see if it leaves my skin soft
and moisturized like this when I bathe with it.
Then I added a few drops of lemon, patchoulli, and tea tree oils to my
herbal rinse, and it gave me a cool, tingly feeling on my scalp. Mmmmmm.....
Can you tell I'm loving my hair? <g

Detroit Hair Day

2007-03-29 15:47:55

Many of you are probably wondering why you haven't heard anything about the
Nappy Hair Day that was held in Detroit last weekend. Well...
You know how sometimes you're so overwhelmed by an experience to the point
that you just can't gather your thoughts to put into words to describe
it? Well that's where I am with this recent Hair Day. I'm sure this is
all going to sound very clinical, as I just don't have the words to express
the rest of it.
First I just want to give a shout out to Sharon and Mrs. Pryor for allowing
us to swoop in and completely take over their places of business. Being
surrounded by the beautiful Afrocentric art in the art gallery downstairs,
and the wonderful aromas and atmosphere in Tulani Rose upstairs just made
the perfect vibe for our day.
Sharon told me she had over 100 people come through her shop upstairs, and
I'm sure even more than that came to the event and never made it
upstairs. Folks came in there from Detroit and all surrounding
suburbs. We even had two newspaper reporters there -- preparing to report
on this wonderful groundswell of nappiness that's taking route in this
country. I can't wait to see their articles which are due to come out next
month for Black History Month.
We were shampooing, twisting, combing, braiding, and talking up a
storm. Everyone had stories to tell, hair experiences, hair issues, or
hair celebrations. We reunited with old friends and bonded with new
friends. To my recollection, we had 3 gentlemen -- two of which got their
hair done, and the other told us his great hair story (gorgeous salt &
pepper locks -- I got pictures!) and had us all laughing as he showed us
his roller-blading expertise (without the skates, thank you <g
The videos that were sent to us by Mosetta (Hi Mo!) were a big hit, as we
got to see how the Hair Days are done in the place where they originated --
Dallas Texas! They know how to have a Hair Day!
We ate like fools (of course), played in each other's shair, and shopped
til we dropped. I even managed to sell a few tshirts, note cards, and lint
picks in the midst of all the wonderful Carol's Daughter products and other
beautiful merchandise for sale at Tulani Rose.
We passed out information, recommended books, gave out recipes, and had a
demonstration of lock maintenance by Nefertiti, a natural hair specialist
in the area. Many people stopped in because they had seen the flyer
floating around town or had heard about it from a friend and just wanted to
come in to ask a question, get some help, find out where/how to start in
their quest to rid themselves of the creamy crack.
We got so many thank you's and so much love! This thang is growing, and
I'm scared to see how many folks we'll have at the next one in March. But
thanks to a great lady who stopped in to see just what this Nappy Hair Day
was all about, we have *the* perfect place to hold the next
one! (Mujadillah, I'll call you tonight or tomorrow.)
So keep your eyes open for announcements for March. It's gonna be da bomb!
And check out A Nappy Hair Affair at http://www.nappyhairaffair.com!

Welcome! It's great to have another consultant in our group. How long
have you been doing Sisterlocks? Have you received your certification
yet? I'm thinking about going through the training later this year, but I
haven't made up my mind yet.
Last question: Why are you shouting?

Re: I'm New to the Group

2007-03-28 14:41:57

Thanks for the welcome Sandy,
- I use the care free curl gold products for naturally curly hair. i
only use a little of that; and ampro gel sometimes - but i rather use
other products once i get hooked up with a locktician.
- i plan to get me a good natural hair care book. do you have any
suggestions? I'd like to read up on twists. my hair is really soft
and may have a hard time in locking (or it might take a while to
lock).
blessings,
pam

Re: [LockItUp] I'm New to the Group

2007-03-28 04:45:55

Hi Pam! Welcome to the group!
What products are you using now? If you have natural hair, and the
products you're using now are working fine for you, I don't see any need to
switch to anything else.
If you have any specific hair problems, let us know and we might be able to
suggest some natural remedies for you.
Will you be going to a locktician for your twists? If so, it's best to ask
the professional about hair care products, as she/he will be right there
and can look at your hair and know your specific hair type and needs.

Hi ladies, I hail from chicago. I transitioned from chemical hair
to natural hair about 2 years ago. I love it. I am now growing my
hair out and want to get my twisted. Are there any products I need
to use? I am going to go get my hair looked at next month - and get
the twists.
- thanks for any info.
take care,

pay for the first retightening is *not* what Joanne teaches
her consultants, and it's not what the certified trainers
teach.<<
That is right! There are some violators though. My
consultant spent about 20 minutes each on me and my
sister and didn't really do the first retightening at all
but I did report this violation. She didn't even give me
my first shampoo and style after putting in my locs!
After saying all of this, I still love my Sisterlocks.
The process is good and there are good consultants, I just
had a consultant who needed help in many areas.
Sure did. I wasn't going to let my sister go hanging like
that. I'm not convinced that the consultant was completely
wrong since she was willing to spend all of that time
retightening her in the wee hours of the morning. I am
concerned about the "oil" message, however.
either.<<
I only read on the egroups website so I don't see her
personal e-mail address. It could be due to egroups
maintenance and maybe it will show up later. Here is the
original message:

please answer some questions for me.....yesterday I went for my
second tightening....first tightening took 7 hours and $140....not
included in my package! No products included either! my scalp was
very dry and flaky....i was using Bonner's peppermint and vinegar
rinse....also my hair was very dull...I washed and used almond oil
once a week....also in the steam room at the gym 2-3times a
week....she says i was washing too often and not oiling enough and in
the steam room too much....i thought I had to stay away from oil!!!!!
i dont know....any way i arrived at her house at 3:30 PM and didn't
leave until 3;00 am!!!! She said i waited to long for a tightening
that's why it took so long..i reminded her that at the end of last
year i tried to make an appointment and this was the only opening she
had...Now this morning I called off of work because not only was i
tired but my head HURTS!!!! It feels like it used to feel when the
African used to braid my hair!...Im actually taking pain pills!!!
The tightening hurt like.....AWWWWW!...well enough of my

I AM A SISTERLOCKS CONSULTANT IN NEW JERSEY. I DO NOT HAVE LOCKS BUT
I THINK THAT THE ARE REALLY NICE AND EASY TO TAKE CARE OF

Re: [LockItUp] Pat's Sisterlocks

2007-03-27 01:00:40

I think that's Moyosafi of the "Sisterlocks in the Carolinas" website. If
you sent pictures to her, she may put them up on her site; but if you want
to send them to the Home Office site, that's the wrong place to send
them. Actually they don't give an email address at the home office, so
you'd probably have to mail the photos to them.
I hope so. I remember my early times, and even now -- with the perm still
on my head -- I have issues. We just have to keep reminding each other to
love our hair in its current stage, and that the journey is worth it.

Re: [LockItUp] Help to a Newbie

2007-03-26 23:10:23

Sigrid, this is precisely why I put those "precautions" in the welcome
message for this group. Anyone who joins this group will now get the
barest minimum suggestions for how to choose a consultant.
I've also posted the 3-visit SL package, and the welcome message advised
all new members to look at it.
Paying all that money for Sisterlocks and then having to pay for the first
retightening is *not* what Joanne teaches her consultants, and it's not
what the certified trainers teach.
You were braver than I was. I didn't even bother going into all those
details cuz I was pretty sure the message wouldn't get posted. Did you
send it to the sister in private email? I've done that occasionally when I
figured Moya would censor my message.
Btw, I got Nina's response to the original query on the SL list, but I
never got the original, and I haven't got yours yet either.

Help to a Newbie

2007-03-26 15:50:45

A new Sisterlocks wearer posted a concern entitled
"Retightening" today on the "Sisterlocks" egroup. It may
be posted there later or not. (Some of us know why it may
not be posted since I refer the person to the Sisterlocks
Home office in the message.) I am posting it here because
I know that several people read both lists and I think it
will be helpful in case it never gets posted.
================================================================

for my second tightening....first tightening took 7 hours
and $140....not ncluded in my package! No products included
either! <<
You later say that your consultant said that you had waited
too long between retightenings. How long did you wait between
each? The first retightening should be included in the
package but if you did not return for your first
retightening within the agreed to time period (2-4 weeks),
It would not be fair to expect the consultant to assume the
cost for the additional work required, right?
You should have gotten a kit which included shampoo,
washing bands, and instructions. Did you get that? If
not, you need to inform the Sisterlocks Home Office, so
that action can be taken.
peppermint and vinegar rinse.... also my hair was very
dull...I washed and used almond oil once a week....<<
Are these products that you asked your consultant about
prior to using them? Did you talk to your consultant
about your scalp and hair concerns when you first noticed
it? If you did all this and did not get a response, you
need to inform the Sisterlocks Home Office.
Since your locs were getting wet, did you separate your
locs afterwards?
and in the steam room too much....i thought I had to stay
away from oil!!!!! <<
You didn't say HOW OFTEN you shampooed in your message.
Did she tell you how you should "oil"? This concerns me
too. It sounds like a call to the Home Office is in order.
If she advised you to use the Sisterlocks Moisture Cream or
perhaps a little Coconut Oil, that might be OK.
3;00 am!!!! She said i waited to long for a tightening that's
why it took so long.. i reminded her that at the end of last
year i tried to make an appointment and this was the only
opening she had...<<
I'm impressed that the woman worked on your hair for 11.5
hours straight!! Wow, that is dedication! It sounds like
she is swamped with customers yet she was determined to
hook you up! (No pun intended.)
Are there any other consultants in your area? If not, you
might want to do what my sister and I did. We had done
much research BEFORE getting Sisterlocks and KNEW that there
was only one consultant (not certified) in Colorado. We
then planned to take the retightening class so we could take
care of ourselves PRIOR to getting Sisterlocks. We
traveled to California to take the class.
The youthful consultant questioned our decision but we knew
that it was the right thing to do. When our consultant left
the country within 4 months of us getting Sisterlocks, we
were set.
Note: There are now 11 Sisterlocks Consultants in Colorado
(2 certified) so this is no longer a problem for folks out
here.
i tired but my head HURTS!!!! It feels like it used to feel
when the African used to braid my hair!...Im actually taking
pain pills!!!<<
Sounds like two things happened:
1. You hadn't had anything done in a long time so your
head was not accustomed to the extreme manipulation.
2. She tightened too tightly. She was probably
tired too (she was working for 11.5 hours -- in the wee hours)
and was concerned about how long you will go next time with
no tightening. I'm not excusing what she did but given
all you stated, I understand it.
1. See if there are other consultants in your area.
2. Take the retightening class. You might be able
to take it locally now.
3. Get regularly scheduled maintenance at 4-6 week
intervals. If you have a longer curl pattern or if
your hair grows fast, you might need even more frequent
maintenance. After you are locked, you can be more
lax.
4. Contact the Sisterlocks Home Office if you suspect
inappropriate consultant behavior after reading my comments.
This list is a nice place for advice but it is not the
place to complain about customer service if you want results
or action taken.
I hope I've helped you, sister, and I hope you hang in
there. You won't be sorry down the road.

Pat's Sisterlocks

2007-03-25 12:51:16

I'm just taking another look through Pat's most recent pictures. How
inspiring. I am truly in awe. Joanne needs to put a couple of these
pictures on her website... especially since they weren't taken by a
professional photographer. They're just pictures taken by a happy SL
client who loves her gorgeous locks!! Can there be a better promotional
vehicle than that?!
As we go through this journey, we each will occasionally wonder if our hair
is ever going to look like the Sisterlocks that made us want to get this
style in the first place. Looking through Pat's pictures certainly answers
that question. It's like watching a baby grow up before your very
eyes. It takes time. The hair goes through stages. Each stage has its
pros and cons. But we will all get to that place where we envisioned
ourselves when we started this journey, and we'll have a wonderful time --
learning about ourselves and our hair -- in the process.
I'm glad my site inspired Pat to continue documenting her own journey. I
especially think it's great that our sites show two sides of the same
coin. Pat's hair was all natural, while mine was partly
permed. Interested folks can see both websites and see how the SL works
with each, how they look different, but how both ways gives you the freedom
of style, low maintenance, etc. They look different, but they're both
beautiful.
For those of you who aren't aware, you can follow Pat's Sisterlocks journey
from the beginning to the present by checking out her website at

And in case I haven't mentioned this lately, I LOVE SISTEROCKS!!

Pat, congrats on the birthday for you and your locks.
Your hair has really grown and looks so thick and full.
I have been really lazy and have not been doing anything with mine
but washing it. After seeing your PICS I think I will start rolling
mine again. My hair is also different lengths. That kind of bugs me
but I will not cut it because the shortest length is too short.
I want my hair to grow to the lenghth where it just hits my shoulders
but who knows. Once it gets there I may want it longer.

1 Year - WOW!!!

2007-03-24 10:39:42

Time keeps slipping into the future..
A year goes by REAL fast when you are having fun ..
And Wearing Sisterlocks!!
Hey tomorrow (the 23rd ) my body turns 41 (Ouch)
And on the 24th my Sisterlocksä turn 1 year.
It's been great!! I've met some wonderful folks via the web
site and
overall just had fun.
I started taking pictures this past weekend. I still have my old
camera that does not get the best resolution. So the pictures are so-
so. I'm my own worse critic.
However next weekend I will have the opportunity to do a photo
session with someone who has a REAL nice high-end camera. So we will
see if we can get better close up shots of the hair.
I'm working on several new pages scheduled to be posted within
the
next several weeks (I'm behind). I did not want to miss my
1-year
anniversary so I decided to post a few (preview) pics to show
everyone my hair now.
My skinny little medium sized locks have gotten longer and thicker.
I'm still deal with them growing at different rates there fore
being
several lengths on my head. I don't want to cut them even until
then
are on my back or shoulder. I cannot wait. The day I can pull them
up in the back you will all know. Right now I still have locks at
the back hairline that will not stay up.
So for this style I just rolled on medium to large perm rods after
washing. Also this weekend for the first time I used Dr. Bronners
peppermint soap to wash them.
http://www.drbronner.com
I read about several people on line using this product. WOW what a
wonderful experience. That stuff is great. I think my head felt so
good I was making strange noises while in the shower. I put it in a
spray bottle so I could distribute all over my head. Before then I
was just using Sisterlocks shampoo. Now I will have to try the new
Herbal Sisterlocks shampoo also.
Anyway look for more updates soon.
In the meantime I'm putting pictures in the Files section.
Take care, Pat

Re: [LockItUp] Tea tree what?

2007-03-24 03:37:41

It's Sisterlocks tea tree shampoo. It's for after you no longer need to
band and braid your locks.
Get some starter shampoo as soon as possible. In the meantime, get Dr.
Bronners soap from your nearest health food store.

Tea tree what?

2007-03-23 18:44:07

Hi all,
I got my hair all braided and banded to shampoo only to realize that
I had about one drop of Sisterlocks starter shampoo left.(Someone in
my house has been using it or spilled it) So I took a chance and
used just a little of the spray shampoo. I have not seen any harm
yet but was wondering about what could be used in the place of the
starter shampoo.
Some of you mentioned some kind of tea tree formula what not. What
is that and where do you get it? Can it be used instead of the
starter shampoo or is that just for older locks?
I don't have the patience to look back at the old messages because my
computer is very slow today.

I don't even consider tightening daily because of my hectice schedule.
I actually have to schedule time in my calendar to do my own hair.
However, lately, I've been going back to my consultant. I enjoy being
others' Sisterlocktician, but I prefer to be the client when it comes
to my own hair. It's nice to just sit in a chair and catch up on a
book while someone else does the work.
Whenever I retighten my own hair, I do a "spot check". I just
retighten the ones that are loose, using my fingers only.
I stopped using the clip tool all together. I used to use it on my own
hair, but stopped after I mistakenly combined two locks. Now I wait
until my new growth is long enough and use my fingers. I still use the
hook tool along my hairline.

Hello:
There's going to be a Sisterlocks Get Together in the Phoenix area
on Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001 from 4:00 - 7:00 PM. This a great
opportunity to learn more about Sisterlocks and meet persons who have
Sisterlocks. You can also learn about Brotherlocks for men. If you're

had there hair put in sisterlocks. I'm debating whether
or not to have my daughters' hair ages 8 and 5 (and
eventually the 2 month old) put into sisterlocks. My
concerns are the expense and if I have the right to do
something to their head that is "permanant". What are your
fellings ? <<
Jai,
My mother gave me pierced ears when I was 3 months old.
Now that is permanent. If the child no longer wants locs,
they can simply cut them or wear braids over them until they
are ready to cut them (like a relaxer).
I do agree with Sandy in that the decision should be 100%
theirs.
My sister put in Sisterlocks in a 10 year old bi-racial
child and she and her mother are thrilled. The mother
got training to maintain her own child but my sister
still does tightening occasionally. We may include
them both in a documentary film.
I met a lady who became a consultant and put Sisterlocks
in her two daughters (around 10 & 11). That is how she
dealt with the expense issue. Her daughters can be seen
in the Sisterlocks Homecoming pictures. You can't miss
them on Pat's site:

Re: [LockItUp] Children and Sisterlocks

I'd wait and get their reaction to your Sisterlocks. They will probably
want to have their hair done "just like mommy's". Little girls seem to
love it.
I can't speak to the expense because that's just something you'll have to
decide yourself based on your financial situation.

Children and Sisterlocks

Hi I'm new to the group; right now my hubby and I are stationed at Camp
Pendleton, CA but will be returning to Columbus, OH in a month since he's
leaving the Marine Corps. Currently my hair is all natural and I wear it in 2
stranded twists that I do myself but I'm planning on getting sisterlocks when I
return to OH.
My question is do any of you know of children that have had there hair put in
sisterlocks. I'm debating whether or not to have my daughters' hair ages 8 and
5 (and eventually the 2 month old) put into sisterlocks. My concerns are the
expense and if I have the right to do something to their head that is

Ohhh Sandy, I was so looking forward to meeting you. I'll keep my

This Year's Homecoming

2007-03-21 20:54:25

I just found out that Everette's Cornrows & Braiding Academy will have its
first annual Sisterlocks Regional Conference this summer right here in
Detroit. Joanne Cornwell will be here, along with some others.
So in order to give my pocketbook a much needed break, I won't be attending
the Homecoming in California this year. If my finances weren't in such bad
shape, I'd go to both because I really want to meet my Sisterlocks cyber
friends who I know will be at the California homecoming. Maybe next year
I'll hit the lottery. :-)
There isn't much information on the Everette's web site about the Detroit
conference yet, as details still have to be ironed out. But you can
bookmark the site (http://www.everettes-cornrows.com) and keep checking back.
Btw, Everette's is currently having a sale on all of its merchandise, so
you might want to take advantage of the cut prices while you can. :-)

Sisterlocks & Relaxed Hair

You have to have at least 2 inches of natural hair in order to get
Sisterlocks. Because relaxed hair doesn't lock. Ya gotta have *some*
kinky hair to work with to get started.
Check out Joanne's book, "That Hair Thing and the Sisterlocks

Detroit Hair Day - New Info!

2007-03-20 05:37:10

As you know, our next hair day is scheduled for Saturday, January
20th. (For details, send me a private email at diamonique@@earthlink.net)
As an update/reminder, please remember that we will *definitely* start on
time, as these natural hairdos take quite a long to create, so we want to
get started on doing hair as soon as possible.
There will be a short video provided by Mosetta of ANHA. It can be rerun
all during our gathering, so if you don't get there in time to watch it the
first time out, you'll be able to catch it later.
**NEW** Mosetta is also shipping us a small amount of Nappy Hair Affair
merchandise, so you can buy your tshirts, tote bags, CDs, etc. while you're
there! Get there early before they sell out!!!
**Note: Because we're expecting quite a large number of people this time -
many of whom aren't aware of the goodie-bag drawing, we will not have the
goodie bag this time. However, we'll make sure it's widely known so we can
do it again at the next hair day.
We'll be chowin' down, shampooin', twistin', coilin', braidin',
demonstratin', beadin', modellin', and whatever else feels good. :-) So
bring your potluck dish, your hair products, willing hands, *and* money --
cuz we know you'll find something at Tulani Rose that you just can't live
without! :-)

Re: All Grown Up

2007-03-20 05:13:15

Sandy,
I've tried the Tea Formula in the spray bottle and it is wonderful. I
really like the idea of it being in a spray bottle for it makes it
easier to wash my Sisterlocks in the shower. The conditioner is
wonderful also. I've had my Sisterlocks now for 14 mos and I was
told by another consultant other than my original one, that I wasn't
supposed to use any other products on my hair. I had been using
several different shampoos and conditioners. Have you ever heard of
this? I do know that in the beginning this was true, but I figured
since my locks were mature enough that I would experiment w/other
products.
Anyhow I've now come to the conclusion that Sisterlocks products are
best for me especially the shampoo, because it doesn't lather too
much.
Sorry to be so long winded.

Hi everyone,
My mom and I went for the sisterlocks consultation. I really enjoyed
the way my locktician took her time and discussed all the various
reasons for wanting me wanting to loc my hair. I feel that this is
definitely a spiritual journey and I will learn many new things about
myself. My sisterlocks will be put in on February 21 & 22!! I am so
excited. I don't know what I am going to do in the meantime... I
guess I will just relax. I got two test locks put in and I keep
looking at them.
My mom will have to wait 12 more weeks for her relaxer to grow out.
She is very excited though and a little anxious for her hair to grow
out.
Well, we are both very excited. I guess I am on my way!!

RE:[LockItUp] Self-Retightening - Again

2007-03-19 11:12:17

Sigrid....
Great questions!!!
I'm hoping you (we) can get answers without people telling too much.
I try to do mine in sections but find myself fixing the ones that need to be
fixed as needed. I'm REAL careful in the back. I've almost (have) combined
locks because I can not see what I'm doing. I was able to undo what I did ...
but this IS NOT a good thing to have happen.
Also it's hard to tell if there is new hair at the roots that need to be worked
in. Which also brings up the question of what tool to use. Hmmmm
I have not done my entire head yet. Last time I did as many as I could in the
front and let Grace and a couple of the ladies trained in her shop help me with
the back.
I still have a problem with tiny locks that unravel along my front hairline. I
have to let Grace do those. She's good at tiny locks.
My hair is growing fast so I still have a hard time keeping up. I lost a tiny
lock at my back hair line just yesterday because the tiny hair broke as I was
trying to retighthen.
I'm working on my son's hair also. It has grown soo much. I will take pictures
once his whole head is done. Right now he looks like a "Wildman" by the head
with all the new growth.
My Sisterlocks turn 1 year on the 24th. I'm working on pictures to post.
P.S. If anyone wishes to reply to these questions in more detail off the e-mail
list please include my address too. I think everyone knows who the consultants
are. Thanks
Pat

Self-Retightening - Again

2007-03-19 01:01:59

Even though I took the Retightening Class only a few months
after getting Sisterlocks, I had been having my locs
retightened by certified consultants every 4-5 weeks. Now
that I have taken Consultant Training, locked up heads, and
tightened others, I've started retightening my own locs
and having my sister (certified) look at them occasionally
to ensure that they are doing well. I've had Sisterlocks
for about 20 months.
Self-retightening is different in a many respects and I'd
like to know how others feel about a few things.
(NOTE: This is for the folks here who have taken the
Retightening Class or are consultants and retightening their
own locs. As a consultant myself, I'm being careful not to
reveal too much about the method since it is patented. My
apologies to non-Consultants if something sounds a little
vague.)
* Frequency: What are your thoughts on tightening daily?
I overheard Joanne saying that she does that. I assume that
it means that you tighten a few locs every day. I have
around 400 locks so it would mean that I'd need to tighten
14 locs/day. Last night I went crazy and tightened over
1/4th of my head.
* Sections: We are taught to tighten in sections but what are
your thoughts of using the feel method and tightening where
it is loose? My sister has been doing that now for almost 2
years and her locs look great.
* Tool: (I'm being real careful here) I find it easiest to
use the clip tool on my own locs and the either on customers
(I prefer the hook tool). Which one do you use on your own?
How do you handle stray hairs with the clip tool?
* Clock: (Again being careful) Do you orient the clock on your
own head as if you were standing over yourself as a customer
or do you have a new clock when you self-tighten?
(I'm thinking that we need a Self-Retightening FAQ in the
database.)

Banding and Braiding

2007-03-18 22:23:43

The age isn't the deciding factor. It's the maturity of your locks that
matters, and not everyone's hair has the same texture. Some people can
stop braiding and banding sooner -- others have to do it for much
longer. Call your consultant and ask her. Don't stop braiding and banding
unless she tells you it's OK.
No. They are to keep you from messing up or loosening the pattern of your
baby locks while you're washing your hair. Once the locks have matured,
you won't need to braid and band them anymore because they will be locked,
and the rubbing of shampooing won't be able to loosen the locks.
I know what you mean. My hair is the same as yours. But you're just the
opposite of me. The braiding is what I disliked. Banding only took half a
second and didn't bother me a bit.
Thank goodness those days are over for me. Now I'll have to learn how to
wash these lovely locks of mine. :-) I've never washed locked hair before
other than banded and braided.

half.com and started selling. I could not believe all of the books
that I have accumilated over the years. I even sold some text books
from 1982 when I graduated nursing school. These are books that I
was going to throw out but ended up making up to $17 for them.
I always check half.com first before I purchase a cd or a book. I
only buy the "like new" stuff and have not been disappointed yet.
I know this is off subject but wanted to let everyone know this is a
great site for purchasing things at half price (usually) or lower. I
have sold hair books on there after I got my locks. I am keeping all

Hello, everyone...
I saw Oprah today... I think the woman has Sisterlocks, or that is
what I thought when I first saw her. The style she wore on the show
was very nice and sophisticated looking.
About the dry scalp problem... I have always used witch hazel with
tea tree oil. I put about 10-15 drops of tea tree oil in a 16oz
bottle of witch hazel and shake it up. It is very soothing and kills
any infection, etc. I've been doing this for several years and I've
not had dry scalp even while wearing twists, braids, or wigs.
To Sandy... congratulations on your "grown-up" SL. I will be getting
my SL put in on February 9th and I can't wait. I really like all the

I really like all of the pictures in the "files" portion of this

before, during, and after the locks are put in and will give me a set
of the pictures. If you'll help me to know how to load them, I would

Latch hook is when you buy braided hair in a bag and latch hook it
into your own cornrolled hair. It can be done with loose hair and
locks, real or synthetic. I think that I have done a hundred of
those. I used to braid for people and got tired of the time it took
and started the latch hook which takes much less time. I am retired
from all of that now but I think that one day I want to learn the
Sisterlock technique. I know that is tedious also but I think that
they are beautiful and I like the idea of working with your own real
hair. I have been getting questioned about this being my own hair.

Re: dry scalp

I could not find a recipe in Let's Talk Hair either.
It is a good book and there is some mention of Sisterlocks and
pictures.
Page 102 has vitamins and minerals that can be ingested to improve
your hair and scalp.
No Lye! by Tulani Kinard is a great little book also. She has step
by step instructions about how to take care of your natural hair.
On page 54 she has a recipe for dry scalp and dandruff.
Take birch, rosemary and Eucalyptus boil for 20 minutes in a glass pot
with 4 cups of water. Let cool and use for rinse.
She also mentions Sisterlocks, Dr. Cornwell and has several pictures
of Sisterlocks.
All of these herbs are new to me but I plan to try some of the
recipes. For some reason my scalp has started to itch again but not
nearly as much as in the beginning.

Is this where you got your hair retightened also? I have been to this
restaurant a few times years ago. I know that then they did hair in
the back. I have gotten my hair braided there.
This is the same restaurant that I suggested to the person looking
for a vegetarian place to eat. I did not know the exact address or
name. I told her it was on 75th and Indiana and the name was
Vegetarian Soul Food.
Thanks for the correct and up to date info.

Sandy,
I was reading over the ingredients for the peppermint, sanicle and chamomile
rinse, and towards the end where you wrote
"Mix 1 ounce each of jojoba, olive and castor oil. add 20 drops of tea tree
EO, 10 drops of nettle EO, and 10 drops of sage EO. Set the bottle in hot
water until warm. Apply 2x a day, massaging the scalp after it is
applied. 'This should do the trick!"
What does EO means? I wanted to make sure I follow the directions exactly.

I'm All Grown Up!

2007-03-12 07:29:39

I saw my consultant today. It's been 25 weeks since I first got my
Sisterlocks, and Sheila said my locks are now all grown up and I no longer
need to use the SL starter shampoo. She also said I can now use any hair
products I want (Carol's Daughter & Ebene Naturals here I come!) and I can
clip off the perm if I still want to.
I couldn't believe it when I heard myself say that I don't want to cut
it. Many of you will remember how much I kept harping on the fact that I
wanted this permed stuff OFF my head. But I like the length. It gives me
more styling options. So she said I could get rid of the permed ends
slowly by clipping a little bit each time I get my locks retightened. That
way I wouldn't notice any loss of length. Sounds good to me!
I'm going to take the retightening class in March because I can't pull the
money together to pay for the one she's having this month. :-(
I'm all grown up! Woo hoo!

How about the cider vinegar rinse from Pam Ferrell's book? The recipe was
posted by Sigrid awhile back:
3 ounces of apple cider vinegar
1 quart of distilled water
1 teaspoon of sage oil
Use weekly after shampoo as a final rinse
(do not wash/rinse out)
That's it! After using it weekly for about 3 months, the
dandruff stopped and I don't even have an itchy scalp unless
I don't shampoo for over 10 days. It has done nice things
for my locs too. My hair which is usually extremely
soft, feel a little more substantial -- they are still soft
but they are less like cotton. I hear that it does the
opposite for people with hard locs. They say that their locs
feel softer.

My gf who got her SL's 11/13 is finding her scalp to

I ordered the SL moisturizer and shampoo is there
anything she can use now?

I am in Louisville, KY but I am from Chicago and I am scheduled to visit my
mother, who still lives there, in a couple weeks. If someone who lives in
Chicago now could give me the name of a natural hair care salon or loctician
and also some black vegetarian/raw foodist restaurants in Chicago, so that I
can FINALLY loc my hair during my visit, I would be eternally
grateful...also I am excited by the prospect of meeting other Chicago area
sisters for a Nappy Hair Affair Day -- count me in! We have a creamy crack
epidemic here in Louisville...to the point where I do not go out anywhere
anymore. I am nappy and proud, but get sick of the negativity I receive from
others here, so I am very much isolated and only have this and a couple
other natural hair forums to look to for support in the cyberworld. Getting
out of the house and meeting sisters of a like mind would be a blessing
beyond words.

Re: [LockItUp] Tender Head

I honestly don't know how to toughen up a tender head, but you might try
Ebene Natural's Scalp Therapy. http://www.ebenenaturals.com/haircare.html
It helped me when my scalp was sore from scratching.

Tender Head

2007-03-10 20:17:40

I have to preface my question with an explanation.
I am extremely tenderheaded. On any given day I can touch my head and
different spots will feel sore. Most of the time I don't know why.
Sometimes my scalp feels sore after I roll my hair or shampoo (even
with being gentle)but many times for no apparent reason. My edges and
nape are always tender with any kind of manipulation. Now my scalp
is sore because of my recent retightening session. My consultant
tries to be gentle but I think my head would hurt with anyone. It is
strange because it doesn't hurt much while it is being done but it
feels very sore a few hours after she is done. Most of the soreness
has worn off since a week has past but some parts of my head really
feels like it needs some kind of soothing.
So, I am wondering about some product that may soothe a sore scalp.
Any ideas on how to toughen up a tender head?

Detroit Hair Day - Update

2007-03-09 06:59:15

As you know, our next hair day is scheduled for Saturday, January
20th. (For details, send me a private email.)
:-) So
bring your potluck dish, your hair products, willing hands, *and* money --
cuz we know you'll find something at Tulani Rose that you just can't live
without! :-)
This reminder will be sent again the day before our Hair Day.

Re: [LockItUp] Hello I missed everyone... Happy New Year!!!

2007-03-08 18:23:20

Ugh! So do you plan to go to cosmetology school? Or will you just go
ahead and work out of your home like so many other natural hair care folks
do in states such as Ohio? I'm so thankful that Michigan has already gone
through that natural hair care thang and has revised its laws. If I decide
to become a SL consultant (lord knows I need the extra cash), I won't have
to deal with that hassle.
I'm thinking about taking the training at the Homecoming, too. If I can
muster up the money to pay for it -- which is a *very* big "if". Right now
it's looking difficult just to get the money to attend the Homecoming.
I can certainly understand being burned out on the computer. Been there...
done that. But don't stay away from us so long, Pat. We miss you!

Re: [LockItUp] Micros v. Reg. Sisterlocks

2007-03-08 15:31:31

Think time and money.
If it takes 2 hours to do a retightening on my 419 locks, how long will it
take to retighten your 1000 locks? If it took a day and a half to complete
my initial locking session, how long would it take to do micros? How much
would it cost? And how much would the retightenings cost?
Like everything else, it's an individual choice. Talk to a few consultants
and get their input, look at their work, check out their prices, etc.

Hello I missed everyone... Happy New Year!!!

2007-03-07 10:43:10

Hello friends,
Hey "LockitUp" buddies...
I just got back to Colorado from Ohio on Sunday. I did not post
while I was there but I would read when I got the time.
My main objective was to place job applications. I had to opportunity
to place about 25 applications in 3 weeks. I was very burned out in
the end but pray my efforts were worth it.
I also had the chance to be with my best friend since High School
during her Breast Cancer surgery. So far everything seems
successful, as we've truly been blessed during this crisis.
I checked out hair care a little. From talking to a few people I
understand in Ohio I would HAVE to be licensed before I could do
Sisterlocks there. I know the laws differ from state to state.
If anyone has any feedback concerning this please let me know. I
hope not. I'm not ready to go thru this. I did pass out cards and
had several people ask about my hair. I have a few clients waiting.
My business partner and cousin is a cosmetologist and will go get
Sisterlocked trained during the Homecoming this summer or may go to
Columbus if needed before then.
My goal is to relocate by the spring. I did not take any pictures
during the holiday. I was much too busy. I also think I (computer)
burned myself out just a little. I still have pictures to post from
the training class here held in October as well as another set of
pages I'm working on.
My locks will be 1 year old on the 24th of this month along with my
body turning 41 on the 23rd. So I will be posting a birthday page
real soon. WHEW .... so much to do .... so little time.
Anyway ... I missed everyone. (((( HUG )))))
I pray everyone had a blessed holiday season and look forward to our
relationship during the upcoming year.
Take care

Sisterlocks Pricing - Please Read

2007-03-06 15:56:40

Each consultant sets her own pricing; however there is a pricing structure
set down by the home office which states that the initial fee covers 3
things: the consultation, the locking session, and the first follow-up
visit. The home office info packet states precisely what is included in
each of these three visits. This information is on the home office website:
http://www.quicksitemaker.com/members/jcornwell/InfoPacket.html
This as also in the information packet that you receive when you call the
home office for information.
For a better look at the pertinent document, go to:
http://sisterlocks.com/images/Thesisterlockspkg.jpg
As to the first follow-up visit, the packet states:
"You will need to schedule your follow-up visit within about a month from
the time you first get your locks put in, and after you've had time to
shampoo them a couple of times. Your consultant will monitor the integrity
of your locks, tighten them up, and give you an idea of how long the
settling-in process is likely to take. You can also begin discussing
styling tips for the 'total look' that's right for you."
The brochures on the website are actual scans of the info that is sent out
to people when they call the home office, and this pricing package is
recommended/suggested to the consultants as part of their consultant
training. This same pricing schedule is in JoAnne's book "That Hair Thing
and the Sisterlocks Approach". But as I said before, this is the home
office's recommended 3-visit package. I think most consultants stick with
this pricing, but some of them don't.
If Serenna is one who uses a different pricing schedule, then you just have
to go with what you agreed upon with her in the first place; but if I were
you I'd call her and ask about this. I won't ask how much you paid, but
I'm curious as to what she told you was covered in your initial fee.
This is just my personsal opinion, but for the sake of anyone on this list
who is contemplating Sisterlocks and hasn't yet chosen a consultant, I urge
you to get this info packet from the home office and use the information in
this packet -- along with recommendations from other Sisterlocks clients in
your area -- to help you decide on a consultant. We always make better
decision(s) when we use all the information that's available to us.
And you should know up front exactly what you're getting for your money.
This should be discussed in your initial consultation visit. If you have a
consultant who isn't following the home office's 3-visit pricing, and if
you like what that consultant will be giving you for the price she's
charging, then by all means go with her. But you should have this
information up front, and you should consult with more than one consultant
before making a decision.
And *always* before committing to any consultant -- no matter how good she
looks -- you should call the home office and ask if that person has been
trained by Certified Sisterlocks Trainer. There are many out there who
have been trained and not yet received their certification. It's OK to
deal with a beginner, but you don't want to deal with an impostor --
someone who has never gone through the consultant training but who watched
someone doing Sisterlocks and simply copied the technique. Unfortunately
there are a lot of those out there.

Re: [LockItUp] Hair Pics!

2007-03-03 08:27:09

It is longer and thicker. The locks thicken as they mature. But it's not
darker. That's probably just the result of the lighting or camera angles.
I did realize, however, that if I don't wear my hair straight back, the
gray isn't so noticeable. Most of the gray (at least the part that bothers
me) is at the front hairline, so it's not noticeable if I style it in a way
that takes the emphasis off of the hairline.

Re: [LockItUp] re-tightenings

2007-03-03 02:49:40

You have to have Sisterlocks for six months before you can become eligible
to take the retightening class. After six months, check with your
consultant to see if your hair has matured to the point where you can take
care of it yourself. If she gives you the OK, you can take the
retightening class with a certified trainer
