Re: Compliment

2007-02-28 12:09:57

I have been getting more compliments also. These feel different
though. I think that I appreciate them more because now all of this
hair is mine. I used to get compliments on my extensions and weaves
and I always felt like the compliments really went to the stylist
because that was not my hair. Now, even without the compliments I
know that my hair looks good. It's still nice to hear them though.
My hair is very full now and I really love it. I shampooed today in
preparation for my retightening on Saturday. I regret that the
retightening will take away the fullness for a while but that is OK.
I decided to not ask that the consultant not retighten down to the
scalp because I think that I will have to return for a retightening
sooner if she doesn't tighten all the way to the scalp. I have been
going every 8 weeks and that has been working out well so far.
BTW Missy, (for future reference)What consultant did you go to for
your slippage and how did you like her? I am asking since we are in
the same area.

Compliment

2007-02-27 19:39:14

I got a compliment today on my hair as I was standing in line at the
bank. A friend I haven't seen in awhile noticed it and said she really
likes what I've done with my hair. Then she asked "What is it?" Rather
than go into detail, I said it's locks... thin locks. Then she asked me
what made me decide to go natural, and I said too many chemical burns in my
scalp. She asked if she could touch it, and I said yes. She really liked
the feel of it and talked about how much it has grown since the last time
she saw me.
As I was heading to the teller, she said she might be checking in with me
some time this year cuz she's getting tired of fooling around with her hair.

slippage

--- Sandy Fields <diamonique@...
I remember someone here talking about slippage at the
nape of their neck.
Serenna is away on vacation and i have a few locks
that have come unravelled.
I think I remember reading this is normal, its only at
the nape of my neck. have I ran my fingers through my
hair too much while it was young?
Do I really sleep that harsh?
On some of my Sisterliocks,I have little knots on the
ends but from the knot back to my head its not a
Sisterlock. Is this new growth or the beginning of
slippage of these also?
I have a retightening 1/14 I cannot wait, I am really
tempted to go see someone else this week coming.
Any ideas why this happened? Do I need to do anything?
Oh BTW I have not washed my hair b/c I know its soft
and stil have perm in it in some places.
I was waiting until the day b4 my re-tightening. I
have however used astrigent and silk clot on my scalp.

I recently read a note that someone is taking their sisterlocks out, because
it wasn't parted correctly. Tell me is it really possible to take them out

Someone just left a message in my guestbook saying she had to take her
Sisterlocks down because the parts weren't put in right, but she's having
it redone in a couple of days.
This brought a question to my mind. I know that the parts are done in a
specific way which allows for ease in styling. My question is: Are there
any other reasons for the specific way the parts are put in?

It is nice to hear about how popular natural hair is in Detroit. I
thought that Detroit was a big relaxer city. When I was in the shops
waiting to get my touch up all of the hair books and magazines that I
would read all seemed to be from Detroit. I know people who would
travel there for the hair shows.
I am happy to say that I have seen a lot of locks here in Chicago
also lately. The relaxer had always been big here also. What with
Johnson Products, Dorum(wave neuvou) and Soft Sheen (care free curl)
all being here. A white coworker of mine thought that Black women
straightened their hair because of Oprah. Could be but, I had my
relaxer long before Oprah. I am glad that I crossed over and happy
to hear about others doing so.

Re: [LockItUp] Shampoo lather

2007-02-24 01:25:36

It lathers great for me. I've never really looked for a lot of lather in
my shampoos anyway. I learned years ago that the lather isn't what cleans
the hair. Clothes detergents and shampoos don't really need a lot of
lather to do their job. The extra stuff (chemicals) are added to make them
later well just because people like to see the lather.
You're still using the starter shampoo for now, right? I plan to try
Sisterlocks Tea Tree shampoo after I no longer have to use the starter
shampoo. I also want to try Dr. Bronner's soap as a shampoo too.

someplace else.
Anyway if I am wrong you all can let me know. But I
remember reading someone saying they didn't like the
"Sisterlock Shampoo" b/c it didn't lather.
I was infromed by Serenna when I got my hair done that
lather was not good for natural hair care. The suds
get trapped in your locks. She said that i needed to
find a shampoo with really good rinsing capabilities.
I have opted for Tea Tree (Botanical)

Re: [LockItUp] Lock Chocolate

2007-02-23 03:00:34

It really is nice not having to be putting stuff on your hair all the time,
isn't it? I moisturize right after a shampoo and then don't put anything
else in my hair until the next shampoo. It's great!
When I was working my perm, I had to grease my hair and scalp when I washed
it, and again about every 3 days because it would dry out so bad. My scalp
is really loving me now cuz I leave it alone. My scalp seems to be
creating the moisture that it and my hair needs, and I don't really need to
be adding stuff. That is really taking a load off the pocketbook. LOL!
Think about it... in the perm days I would go to the hairdress every two
weeks. If I didn't need a relaxer, it would cost me $30. If I needed a
relaxer and/or a cut, it would cost between $45 and $60. Plus all the gunk
I bought to care for my hair at home when I didn't have the money or the
time for the beauty shop.
Now my retightenings are $40 every 5 weeks. And the natural hair care
products aren't very costly at all -- plus I plan to try making some of my
own stuff next year.
Sisterlocks may be a costly item to start, but it's a money-saver and a
time-saver in the long run.
-- Sandy

Lock Chocolate

2007-02-22 20:38:50

I just checked the Lock Chocolate website, and I was right. This is a
cream for twisting and locking the hair. It holds the twists in place
until the hair locks.
Sisterlocks doesn't need stuff like that because the consultant uses a tool
to put our hair into a locked pattern (sort of like crocheting... sort
of). The pattern holds itself... there's no need for any locking creams or
butters to hold the hair together.
I see they have a shampoo also. The shampoo might be OK to use after your
consultant has told you that you no longer need to use the starter
shampoo. But you'll be wasting your money if you buy the LockChocolate
locking cream.

Re: [LockItUp] Updates?

I know what you mean. I still can't keep my hands out of my hair. Wait
until they turn into real little locks. You'll *really* love to feel them
then.
Get a lint pick from A Nappy Hair Affair. They're great for picking the
lint out of locks. I have the Maverick snug cap and the classic lucy. I
wear the lucy because it allows room for my hair to hang in the back. When
I cut this perm off I'll probably wear the snug cap for awhile until my
hair gets too long for it.
So how does it look? Still look like skinny braids? Are they beginning to
thicken?
Looking forward to hearing about it. Please ask her to give you details on
the slippage and anything else specific to your hair so you can pass the
info along to us.
A crown? Here's a stupid question: What's a crown? Oh wait! :::searching
through my Tamu catalog. You mean the open crown? I see something in the
catalog called an open crown. It looks sort of like a fedora with the top
cut out of it.
Lock Chocolate? What the website url? I think I've seen it, but I'm not
sure. If it's what I think it is, it's something for starting traditional
locks. You use it to twist or coil your hair into locks. If I'm correct
on that, you needn't bother with that because Sisterlocks doesn't use that
method at all.
Look at New Bein, Carol's Daughter, and Ebene Naturals for hair
products. And of course Sisterlocks products. They really are great, and
they work for all kinds of hair, not just Sisterlocks.

We took over an entire floor of one of the bars downtown. Free food, free

I danced.
And I danced.
And I danced.
The dj pulled out some oldies and some current tunes. Ya shoulda seen me
doin' da butt!! LOL!
Anyway... with all that dancing you can imagine I was also doing a lot of
sweating. At one point I made the usual trip to the ladies room to get rid
of some beer <g
I just smiled at my reflection in the mirror. My Sisterlocks were doing
just fine thankyouverymuch! Yes my hair was wet, bit I wasn't dealing with
permie curls falling or straightening out because of the sweat. I wasn't
dealing with heat-straightened hair "reverting" because of the sweat. My
hair is what it is -- wet or dry -- and it looked exactly the same as it
did when I first walked into that bar.
Wow! I love my Sisterlocks!

Re: [LockItUp] Braiding & Banding

2007-02-20 05:29:12

I wash weekly, but I'm now switching to bi-weekly -- maybe it'll help speed
up my locking so I can stop the braiding & banding sooner. If monthly is
working fine for you, then keep on that schedule. As long as your hair is
doing well you should be OK. Since you're not putting products on your
hair, you don't have the product-buildup problem, so monthly should be OK.

Re: Braiding & Banding

2007-02-20 01:40:37

Hotep Sandy,
Let me preface this comment by stating that I am not a consultant.
This is my personal story.
I have had my Sisterlocks for over sixteen months. I am *still*
braiding and banding the locs on the top of my head because they
haven't fully loc'd yet. The texture of my hair in that area isn't
the same as the back and sides of my head. Also, I complicated
matters by clipping my permed ends off completely last spring.
Because I stupidly did this myself instead of letting my consultant
do it, I clipped into the locs a bit on some of them and a few of
them unraveled because they had not loc'd completely. Thus, those few
had to be redone. To add insult to injury, I would also use a mild
dandruff shampoo before I used my Starter Shampoo because my scalp
was flaking due to years of chemical abuse. I also manipulated my
locs too much by srubbing too hard and washing too often (once per
week). My consultant, who was JoAnne Cornwell's personal assisant,
scolded me, put me back on the starter shampoo, and advised me to
start banding the top again for a while and washing my hair every
other week. It was difficult at first, but it paid off. Now, the rest
of my head is pretty much loc'd with the exception of a few here and
there. The only other product I use on my locs is the spray
moisturizer, but only on the back and sides. The top is finally
loc'ing, so I might be able to switch to the regular shampoo soon.
I'm finally out of the "Buckwheat" stage and my locs are coming into
their own now. I rarely roll them. They're healthy, hanging free, and
swinging because they're getting some length to them. Quite sassy.
The compliments are constantly rolling in.
So Sandy, my advice to you is to be PATIENT. Everyone's hair is
different. This is what *I* did, but the advice came from the TOP. I
don't think there is any set time to keep braiding and banding. Just
don't take matters into your own hands like I did. Follow the advice
of your consultant and the Home Office. Look at JoAnne's locs. Your
locs could look like hers in five or six (or maybe seven or eight)
years lol... That's my motivation. I'm definitely checking with the
*TOP* before I use any of those luscious products, no matter how
tempting they are.
BTW y'all, Linda Buchanan, my consultant and JoAnne's
assistant, still needs all of you to send prayers and love her way to
help in her fight against breast cancer. You can e-mail her your
support at

Update on my Hair

2007-02-19 13:21:35

Hey people,
I can finally say that my hair is looking how I really like it. This
is not to say that I have not like it all of this time.(got
sisterlocks Sept.15th) Finally,it looks very full and all of the
parts are pretty much covered, even the top. The problem is that it
is time for a retightening. Actually I think that I could wait a
couple of more weeks. My last one was Nov.6th and my hair isn't
really loose. I have a little new growth. I think that I will wait
for the new year. Besides I doubt if I have any chance at getting an
appointment this week.
The back of my hair is all natural and I think that it is almost
locked! I even embrace the fuzziness, well, to a point. That will be
corrected after the retightening anyway.
Friday night I went to a Christmas party. I felt a twinge of
admiration for a half of second at all of the straight and shiny
hairdos. Then I thought of all that they went throught for that and
the envy quickly dissipated. I used to go through all of that
relaxing and styling and my hair looked good for a couple of hours.
I really admired the slinky and sexy dresses though. So, I am free
of the relaxer and now I have to get to work on my figure.

(after braiding for 2 years), then I texturized in July. No need to say
what's on your mind... I kick myself for ruining my hair every day! Anyway,
I saw the light and got sisterlocked at the end of October.
Do you purchase your products (Moisture Treatment, etc) from your
consultant, or from the home office? Just wondering...

Dry Locs

2007-02-17 20:55:27

My consultant told me I wouldn't need to use anything, but that just didn't
sound right to me, so I bought the Moisture Treatment and began using it
immediately on my scalp after my weekly shampoos. I've never had a problem
with dry hair or scalp; and actually since my scalp is now getting used to
not being traumatized by chemicals every few weeks, I can see why people
say that nothing is really needed. I haven't put anything on my hair in
two weeks, and it's not dry or flaky or anything.
That sounds like the right idea. I have both moisturizers; and since I'm
not having any problem with dryness, I'll probably use one at a time, but
not both. I'm glad we have the choices because we have different types of
hair in different conditions from very healthy to very damaged. I think
between the reconstructor, the spray moisturizer, and the moisture
treatment, the SL products can handle any of our hair tyes.

Shampoo Day

2007-02-17 01:07:34

Just a little something I want to share with all of you, cuz I figure
you're the only people who will understand where I'm coming from. :-0 I
wash my hair every weekend, and today is the day. I'm *really looking
forward to it, and that's the part I want to share.
I can never remember a time in my life when I have looked forward to
washing my hair. When I was little it meant at least an hour or two of my
mother trying to comb out the kinks. Thankfully I'm not tenderheaded, so
it's not something that I hated, but it's also not something I looked
forward to.
Then later came the straightening comb. Now *that's* something I hated --
whether my mother did it or a beautician. It didn't matter... I knew I was
gonna get burned.
Then along came the relaxer... a most unpleasant experience that I
ignorantly put myself through for decades. Yes it meant burns, but it also
meant LOTS of time drying and styling. All in all, not a pleasant
experience, whether I did it myself or went to a professional.
There was nothing about shampoo day to look forward to... never.
Now I'm transitioning from relaxed to natural via Sisterlocks, and every
time I wash my hair the progress and maturity of my locks is more evident.
With each shampoo my hair looks and behaves more like locks than skinny
braids. The feel of the natural new growth is a very pleasant one, as is
the feel of the locks. I can't keep my hands out of my hair, and I can't
wait to see where my hair is now in this process. I love the aromas of my
herbal rinse and the Sisterlocks moisturizer. They make my hair and scalp
look, feel, and smell great.
Each time I wash my hair, the changes give me the feeling that I'm moved
one step closer to the Sisterlocks that I dream of.... so I look forward to
my shampoo days -- for the first time in my life. It really is the little
things that make life grand.

Hi Kendra,
My hair is usually very dry. After I locked my hair, during the
period that I was told to put nothing on it but shampoo it became
even drier. About month 4 I actually saw some breakage. After
speaking with my consultant, I now use the Moisture Treatment after
washing my hair and do not rinse it out. I also use it a few times
during the week when my hair starts getting crunchy dry. I intend to
start using the spray moisturizer instead of the moisture treatment
during the week in between shampoos. I do not do the 30 minute deep
conditioning yet. I tried it a few times and had slippage. I haven't
had much slippage using this regimine
You may also talk to your consultant about using the reconstructor,
which is excellent. Talk to your consultant first, because if you use
it before your hair is ready you will have major slippage(It happened
to me)
God Bless You

Re: Happy Holidays Ya'll and Odds 'n' Ends (Khumura)

2007-02-16 19:53:19

Habari Gani Khumura,
This is just a belated note of thanks for the inspiring greeting.
I haven't checked the messages on this board for a while, so I have
quite a few of them to sort out. It's great to find someone online
who celebrates Kwanzaa. My family basically doesn't do Christmas
anymore except to go to candlelight service, but we've been
celebrating Kwanzaa for a number of years. I live in San Diego, and I
try to visit the African American Cultural Center in Los Angeles at
least once per month. It is run by the Organization Us whose founder
is Maulana Karenga who is, as you know, the creator of Kwanzaa. My
family and I are going to attend the Karamu there on the 30th.
I enjoy reading your posts. You and I are on the same wavelength
about a lot of things. You seem to be quite knowledgeable about
Sisterlocks and their care (as are many of the others on this board),
and your philosophy of life reminds me so much of myself. I have been
rearing my children in much the same way as you are guiding your
young Godson.
Thank you for posting "Let's Make a Slave." I hadn't seen it in
years. I am going to share it with my teenagers tomorrow and discuss
it with them in depth. It's amazing that our hair issues of today,
among other things, are directly related to the seasoning that our
ancestors received hundreds of years ago. It's tragic that the same
kind of psychological brainwashing is still going on in a different
yet equally insidious and diabolical form, and is being further
reinforced by our own people. Sad.
I know we're supposed to stick to hair discussions on this board,
so if it's OK with you, I'd like to e-mail you off-list to discuss
some of the critical issues you've raised in some of your past posts.
I'd also like to know more about your idea about lighting white
candles.
Blessings,
Martha

You're on to something. These are earth colors... the colors of

When I start decoratinig (hopefully next spring) I plan to use these same

Since getting my hair done Dec 2nd, I only like

I am thinking of doing a splash of orange, rust or

Dry Dry Locs

2007-02-14 02:58:29

Hey all...
I have a question. I live in a city with AMAZINGLY hard water, and
as we all know, winter is setting in. The combination of the two is
making my hair super dry. I'm talking straw style, like it's been
overprocessed dry. My locs are still babies, but I would like to find
some kind of daily moisturizer I can give to them so that they won't
be all dry and matted every day. I don't want to use what I used to
use because I know it leaves residue, and I don't want to have icky
looking locs because I have tons of gunk in it. However, these hard,
crunchy locs in my normally soft soft hair is just icky! Another
thing...I have relatively fine hair, and so each loc is really light.
Any suggestions/recipies/products I can try? I would prefer
something simple that I can run through my hair every morning rather
than something I have to apply to each loc. I wash my hair with Dr.
Bonners Almond soap (I had to stop using the peppermint because it
was too harsh), and I condition with my favorite Pantene Pro-V Dry
version. I usually use some Carol's Daughter Hair Milk to mouisture
after washing, but my hair sucks that in like nothing at all.
Please help!!!!

some are ignorant & really may be genuine, others are negative & I don't want

I thought that I had seen it all until I saw a post about this site.
www.cyberparlor.com
There is such a thing called dreadperms. I am thinking how could you have a
perm and dreads too so out of curiosity I went there. There was a bunch of
pictures of white people with curly hair. My guess is that someone is giving
them curly perms then trying to dread their hair. I cannot believe the
lengths that they are going to in order to have locks.
This reminds me of in 1980 when Bo Derek was popular with her braids. Some
white girls at work wanted to pay me big bucks to cornrow their hair. I did
a few to help pay my tuition. It felt strange to charge them for the same
thing that I did for my friends for nothing but I said hey, they would pay
much more at the salon. That is what they wanted and in my opinion it looked
kind of ridiculous on them. The same with these dread perms but someone out
there(probably white) is making big dollars.

Of course they don't look the same but it can be done. Also there is a
consultant here who was done a few "white" clients. Yes they are different
but the hair will "mat" or lock after a point in time. Again it depends on
the texture of hair. Remember there are MANY people of mixed culture all
around including some of "us".
There is a "huge" Latin American and Hispanic population here in Colorado.
Some of their hair texture is just like "ours". Look in the Dreads book.
See link below:

In this book you see all types of people with locks. It can be universal.
Look at the hair texture, not the skin.

After having her locks for 27 months she noticed the

her true hair was filling and and it was thickening at
the top where most men go bald. At one point she was

As of thanksgiving she had a full thick bushy sheep

up top.
I say this, to say maybe it was not a isolated

Re: Perm'd ends..

2007-02-06 11:07:42

I felt the same way when I first saw my locks. My God! What did I do?
It was also 3AM and I had to find my way home so I did not panic too
much. The parts in the top of my head are the only ones that bother
me because I think that I am paranoid that my hair is thinning up
there. I said before that every woman (on both sides)in my family
that is over 45 have bald spots in the top of their heads. I think
that my hair is thin also. It only took my consultant 2 hours to
retighten. Granted, she is very fast but I don't have a whole lot of
hair either. I am hoping that when it is locked it will be covered.
The back of my head is all natural and I think that it is beginning
to lock and it appears to be thicker than the top. I absolutely love
how that part of my head feels also. I know we are not supposed to
manipulate much but I cannot keep my hands out of my hair. I am
noticing that my kids and husband like to touch it more. I used to
beg them to stroke my head.(I find that very soothing)Now my 12 year
old does that when talking to me. Sometimes when my 4 year old sits
in my lap she will play with my hair. It is so nice.

time for the re-tightening to be done.

Natural Hair Styles

2007-02-06 02:05:26

Hello:
Checkout the Winter 2000 edition of Ultimate Black Hair Guide. You'll
find natural hair styles and lock styles. There's even a brief blurb
about Sisterlocks. You'll also find relaxed styles too so be forewarned.
I've had my Sisterlocks for a few years and I don't have much part
showing after retightenings. I also have very thick hair. For
styling, misting my hair with water works well. I've tried Queen
Helene's styling gel mix with a little carrier oil such as Jojoba,
Almond oil or Olive oil with successs and no flaking. The styling gel
does not contain alcohol.
Peace,

Your pictures are nice. I wish I had taken pictures because I would
like to see how much my hair has grown in the last 2 months. I was
braiding it tonight and the braids seem to be longer.
Is Serena's hair in Sisterlocks or traditional? I have not seen her
in years. Her hair is much longer now.
BTW for any newbies there is a page at the Sisterlocks in the
Carolinas that has some pretty good info about caring for new locks.I
think the address is www.SisterlocksintheCarolinas. I am pretty sure
that Sandy and Pat have the link at their sites. Settling was
mentioned, as in don't color your locks until they have settled. I
don't know what that means.

Oh so I guess you think the questions are gonna stop? No way! I'm still
asking questions after 4 months!
Go ahead and ask your questions, girl. That's what I created this list for.

I hear ya. I love the feel of my nape -- all natural little one-inch
locks. :-)
I wasn't thrilled about the parts, but they didn't bother me. I knew what
it was all about, I styled my hair nice and neat, and just went on about my
business.

Sandy I smiled the whole time i was getting it done. I
was so excited and nosy I never fell asleep. Serenna
daughter helped for one section so Serenna could
finish b4 11pm. Other then that short bit of help she
did it all by herself.

Perm'd ends..

2007-02-04 06:43:40

***********************************
I have perm on my ends. Serenna cut most of the
damaged hair off, and only left what was suitable and
healthy to lock. She called it something that started
with a "R"
**********************************
Serenna is a very knowledgable women, she is into alot
of what I like oils, spirits, mudd cloth, afrocentrik
wear, so we stopped I purchased a mud cloth coat from
her and a bag to match. I looked at earrings we talked
about Sister Sfua quite a bit. And my experience at
her center many years ago.
We broke for lunch and she was having a spa day at her
shop the following day so we had many interuptions as
her friends were getting the shop in spa shape.
All in all it took 12 fun exciting hours
*****************************
I love my hair, but when I first left her shop ARGH I
was saying Ohmigash what did I get done to my hair I
am taking this out when I get home. My ends were
stringy, and I had split ends coming out of the locks.
Serenna saw my disappoint as did her gf J, and they
gave me options. Gurl when I went home I cut up some
foil paper and went to work with that and a misting
bottle filled with Red Egyptian Musk, sprintz and
rolling.
I was a curly cutie the next day...lol
I love the way my hair feels like wool in the back.
The back of my hair is all natural, no perm, b/c of
the cut I had.
I loveeeeeeeeeeeeee my hair, the parts don't bother me
but it seems like it should since it is something to
talk about. But no one has said a thing about them and
I love them.

********************************************
I love my hair, the parts and all the crazy locks that
are today flying away which way except where I
say,....lol
Shantrell can I ask you a question? What is it with
parts, and a scalp showing? When you wear braids isn't
the scalp showing? If you was to wear 3 ponytails your
scalp would show? I heard someone else say this, what
does it mean. Should our scalps not show. I am not
being difficult I just want to know. I never heard
concern for the scalp showing. I had a africian women
braiding my hair once and she mentioned I couldn't get
a style I wanted b/c my parts would show??? I don't
understand that.

Missy,
Your locs are just lovely! I love that finished do with all
of those curls on your head. You have a nice full head of
locs, sistah! I know you must feel wonderful because you
sure do look fabulous.
Thanks for sharing your pics with us so we can have another
beautiful sister to share with the world.

Love the pics! Love your Sisterlocks! Yes you *are* cute, Miss Thang!!! <eg
Now answer me a question. I know you've probably already told us this, but
what the hell. Is your hair all natural? Is looks like it's got perm on it.
How long did it take to do your whole head?
How are you liking it so far?
And please feel free to ask us ANYTHING concerning the care and feeding of
the Sisterlocks. We're all taking this journey together.

From the Part Queen!!!!

2007-02-03 07:18:09

I call myself that because I was crazy enough to take pictures
with my parts as if I was proud of them. (see my first pictures)
I was so happy to be free I did not notice much.
I just finished retighthening my hair on Tuesday. With the help
of 2 new consultants at Grace's shop we got the job done in a
couple of hours. Proir to that session I had no parts ... in
fact I had a "little" afro thing going on "under" there.
It had been since Oct 3rd. Now that I "have parts" again my
hair is much neater. So I can style in better. I will be
setting it on small perm rods this weekend ... after I wash this
gel out. YUH Again.
So even with my 11 month old Sisterlocks I still have parts.
Yes I like the full look of my un-tighthened locks but I will
put up with the parts for now because I know it's important to
keep hair fresh. I lost a tiny lock in my kitchen because it
had not been tighthen. I tried to get to it my self ... but
because I could not see it I almost combined it with another
lock.
This was a lock that I was trying to pamper because of the
thinness of the hair at the base of my neck. OH Well it will
grow back ....
What I'm trying to say is in some areas it's important to keep
locks tight so their weight will not be too most stress on the
the tiny strands of hair holding the lock. In the top of my
hair I can go longer and allow the "new growth" to fill in my
parts.
So .... don't sweat it. You will still have to deal with the
new growth whether you have Sisterlocks or another form of
natural locks. You notice the parts more because of the number
of locks. Perhaps the hair density has something to do with it
also. I rememer seeing Kim Hall's hair when I was in San
Diego. I don't remember really noticing her parts ... but again
she have lots of hair per square inch. I've always had hair on
the fine or thin side. Going natural doe not change that fact.
Take care ...... be Happy and Nappy
pat

Pat,
Try either Aveda Forming gel, in their Purefume Brillance line, or either
Cream of Nature's Herba Rich Molding gel. Both of these are H20 based & don't
cause flaking.

Re: [LockItUp] Locs by Serenna

Now in the photo showing "Serenna doing that Sisterlock thang...", I see that
the lady whom Serenna is working on, doesn't have a lot of scalps showing, is
it b/c of the size of the locs, what's the difference? I really like how
these locs are coming out, w/out all the scalp showing...

Hey all,
I think that Missy's do is cute & I just want to say that I really
appreciate this site & all of the knowledge re: siserlocks, it really makes
me antsy about getting mine. Anyway, I know that this topic has been
discussed endlessly, but I am just curious as to how people deal with the
parts after your hair is first done & when it's retightened? Do you wear
headwraps when you go out, until the parts disappear? I am only asking b/c I
really don't like how all the scalp shows & I really wouldn't want to have to
keep explaining to family, friends, & others as to why my scalp is showing!

Nice to see your pictures Missy. I hope your first week is
Sisterlock "bliss"
******
I tried the sytling set everyone was talking about last week. I
2 strand twisted my hair then rolled the ends of my hair.
Now for the rest of the story. I had purchased some "gel" to
set my hair with. So me being a smart "butt" decided to put
some on each section before twisting the hair. Well the jar
said this gel contained no alcohol and no H2O. Thus no flakes!!!
Well I got no flakes but, my hair feels like there is plactic on
it. Yuh .... Yuh.....
I've gotten so use to putting very little on my hair that
that "film" feels real funny. I can't wait to wash my hair.
I remember during training Celest saying she sometimes uses a
setting lotion called Labelle. I think she mentioned it was a
like the old "Dippy Do" from back in the day.
Anyway .... what gels have anyone used and liked.
Perhaps I should just stick with the water sets.
That's what I get ...... I played too much this time.

Khumura,
I know I am recently locked, and b4 this process I
researched for yrs, offline understanding and needing
to know. I had no idea what was happening to me. What
was the driving force but I know I hear you so loud
when you speak about how you feel now that your
locked.
I am changing and evolving everyday, I am also moved
by a higher spirit. I smile and go. I have had nothing
but good words from co-workers since my change has
started. I had a *black women* say to me yesterday,
wow your hair looks good today. I don't know what was
going on Tuesday with your hair it looked like you
stuck your finger in a socket. I smiled and said, if
you have nothing nice to say My mother told me to be
silent and still. I left her standing there.
For me it started with my braids, now onto another
level, right. OOOO and I am embracing it.
**************
Ohhhh yes sista, your giving me goosebumps. I read
Queen Latifah's Ladies First as part of my self
evolution....lol. I was seriously adding the Queen to
my name I love it. Im not there yet spiritually and
mentally, but I can see myself there in 5 yrs. In
reading your words above I guess that's why every pics
you see of a sista in Sisterlocks or I see she seems
to be floating on air, like nothing can touch her. Its
amazing.
