The Yearbook

2007-01-31 20:47:58

I'm thinking of ordering the Homecoming Yearbook and 2 calendars. Does the
yearbook have information in it? I mean... is there info that I can use --
as a customer -- other than just the pictures? I don't want to buy it if
the book is geared more towards consultants and won't really do me much good.

I have tried that and it does last a long time. Usually I roll my hair on
rods after I dampen the ends with water, get in the shower and take the rods
out when I get out. It is amazing to me that my hair curls in that short of
time.
Isn't it wonderful to not be fearful of water anymore. Water is used to make
our hair beautiful instead of ruining our do. I watched a show on the
Lifetime channel the other day called Any Day Now. They flashbacked to the
60s and the little Black girl had just got her hair pressed and her little
white friend pushed her in the pool. Her hair was a mess and she was so
upset that she could not speak. Her mother took her for her first perm the
next day.
Man, that brings back memories. The difference is that I did not get my first
perm until I was 21. I was an avid swimmer as a kid, was a lifeguard in my
teens but, my hair was always a wreck. Serious swimmers know that the cap
does not keep your hair dry. Now, years later I have stopped swimming and
have gained a ton of weight. As soon as I get rid of these permed ends I am
going to start swimming again.

khumura
,
Thanks for the advice. I'm just researching now. I'm actually job-hunting
in my career field right now, which is a Systems Support Specialist. I'm
not ready to decide where the Sisterlocks will fit. Because of my recent
new car purchase I need to continue working in my field before going to
Sisterlocks full time.
I'm just exploring the market place. I have not lived in the area in 18
years so I need to start from ground zero to learn the demographics of the
area again.
I don't plan on working in a salon I just need to know what the city has to
offer in natural hair care.
My first clients will be people I know and have shared Sisterlocks with via
the web. My business cards currently have my e-mail as well as my web
address. I do graphic arts and know people in the field so my stuff will be
done professionally.
One of my first purchases after the holiday season is a good camera. The
one I've been using for the web site is OK but I need one that gets a better
resolution. I also design apparel and accessories so my graphic arts needs
will carry over to that side of my business as well. I'm in No hurry. I
want to have my plans in order.
I will keep you in mind when I get down to the details.
Thanks again
I will keep you posted.

The hair is doing fine. I had about an inch of new growth in the back, so
it took a little longer. I usually go after 6 weeks, but this time it was
8 weeks. The perm is still there. No new instructions. It took 3
hours. It normally takes two. I don't know how long my hair is... I'll
measure tonight and see.
My headband came in handy today because it covers up the parts in the
front. :-) I'm gonna wash my hair tonight... that'll fill in the parts a bit.

I'm home recovering still. I will be working on my head today. I have a

Look. I need to get busy. I have to be groomed for my "Home Coming" in 2

Interesting.. I think I like being different ... that's why the parts and
the curly-Q's did not bother me much.
I'm going home in 2 weeks to visit and look for a job before moving back.
Home is Cincinnati, Ohio.
I've told several people back there I have locks so I'm certain they have
had a lot of time to imagine how I look. My mother when I first told her
said ... "can you wash them?" She meant no harm that is just how Mother's
are... My Mother knows I've always been one to change my hair so she will
enjoy seeing style.
So when I go back I will be styling just to show them different ways they
can be worn. For my interviews I will do a straw set.
I also have some potential customers waiting. So I will be taking business
cards, my portfolio, and brochures to promote Sisterlocks. I also will be
checking to see if there are any Natural hair care salons in the area. I
know there are several consultants in Columbus which is an hour away.
Anyway everyone around here, (Denver) have gotten use to me being different.
The test is going back home.

Hey Carol,
Thanks for the kind words. I enjoy this list more then you would ever know.
I check it several times a day even when I don't post. Everyone on this
list seems real positive and like they are truly your friends. Some of the
other natural hair care list ARE NOT as positive and seem to get off making
each other look bad. So I always feel comfortable showing Y'all stuff
before I go "public". So I thank everyone for helping out. As others start
pages I'm certain there are several "eyes" here to help you along the way.
We all need each other KUODS to Sandy "our" list leader also for all her
hard work. She's always there to reply to people or say hello. ((((
HUG )))))).
Oh yeah the piano is Sigrid's and yes she is also a blessing. Her and her
sister are wonderful "good" people. Every time I visit I feel right at home
as if I've known them forever. This is the same way I felt while in San
Diego at Kim Hall's home. Hey let's face it REAL people are a rare jewel.
I even look forward to meeting Sandy in person this summer at the Homecoming
as well as during the ANHA cruise. We decided to be cabin mates even with
us Never meeting each other in person. This proves that true friendship
comes from the heart and not just a physical thing. I feel close to all on
this list.
So how many are planning on attending the Homecoming this summer and did
anyone else sigh up from the Nappy Hair Affair ANHA cruise. Sandy I know
has the link if you don't know what I'm talking about. It's a good time
after Christmas to start saving up for the summer and fall events.
Anyway Enough of my "whiny" sentimental Butt....... Have a wonderful day.

Brown paper roll is from the old school. You tear
apart a bag making each peice about 4 inches long or
long enough for you length hair.
Twist the bag and roll your hair. I guess I can
compare it to the twist roller in the beauty supply

Styling option

2007-01-26 13:43:34

I tried the following styling option and ended up with a really
pretty, long-lasting do. I misted my hair with water and essential
oil( of your choice) then I sectioned into small-medium sections then
braided it. After that I rolled each braid under, toward my scalp then
pinned into into place. The result was a head full of kinda spiral
wavy looking locs. It really lasts. Looks great worn up or down and
makes the hair look fuller. Just finger comb. I like the look better
than simply braiding the locs together. If you want to extend the
do..just twist sections together then roll and pin. That simple!

I got mine done while I was off for vacation so I did not hear from
my coworkers for like 2 weeks. I have not received any negative
comments either. I hear "it is really cute " a lot. I get silence
from some people also so, I figure the silent ones are the ones that
maybe don't like it. I appreciate that also. I am glad that they
keep negative comments to themselves. My Mom did not like all of the
scalp showing at first.
On election day I caught a women who was behind me in the voting line
staring at my head with a bewildered look on her face. That was
right after a retigtening,so maybe it was the scalp showing again.
The other day there was a couple staring at my head but they had a
kind of admiring look on their faces. I think because of the
straight ends some people don't know what they are seeing. I like
that too. I have always liked being a little different.
My husband is just happy that my hair looks done most of the time.
He didn't like how my hair looked in between visits to the salon. I
have not had a bad hair day yet.( in my opinion) Even with having
pneumonia and not doing anything to my head for the last week. It's
all good.

Re: hair washing......can't find it

2007-01-23 07:18:42

Missy,
There are some people (not many) who have never had to bundle their
hair before washing. Their hair was locked the moment they were put in.
However, don't assume that you're one of those people. You don't want
to find out the hard way that you're not. Take it from me. I learned
the hard way that I was NOT one of those people. Just bundle your hair
until you're given the OK to not do so anymore. However, grabbing only
three at a time seems like to few. Do you have very thick hair? Lots of
density?

Re: Hair Bliss!!!!

2007-01-23 04:45:41

Pat,
Thanks for sharing your site. What a wonderful gift. Your hair is
beautiful. It looks so different than it did in July. Your hair has
really grown and your locks are maturing nicely. You look too cute in
your photos, orange rods and all :) The straw set looked beautiful.
Next time, try those flexible rollers. You'll be able to put a lot more
locks on them and still get the desired look. They come in different
sizes. Get the long thin ones. Back in July, your hair was the perfect
size for straws, but now your locks have expanded and are too long for
the straws. It's not impossible, but it takes too long and too many
straws. Any how, I love your site(s) and always refer people to it.
You're so down to earth and I enjoy reading your memoirs. Oh, and I bet
Sigrid's house is beautiful. Was that a baby grand piano in the
background? Pat, I hope you get better soon, and keep on sharing.

Re: [LockItUp] hair washing......can't find it

2007-01-22 10:57:23

I remember one person on this list -- or maybe another list -- hadn't been
told to braid and band her hair. She was getting frizzies and fuzzy hair.
Your locks are new, Missy. Don't wash them without banding and braiding
them. Your consultant will let you know when your locks are mature enough
that you don't need to braid and band them anymore. Mine are 4 months old
and I still braid and band every time I wash them. I'll continue to do so
until my consultant says it's OK to stop. I'm hoping she'll tell me that
tomorrow when I go for another retightening, but if not... I'll just keep
on braiding and banding.
I don't do it by sections. I braid and band my whole head... about 12 or
15 braids altogether... and then wash with the starter shampoo. I squirt
some shampoo at the root of each braid (at the scalp) and then I knead my
head like bread dough until it works up a good lather. I go around
squeezing the lather through the braids... just squeezing, not
rubbing. Then I rinse and do it all over again.
I have one of those water spray attachments that I bought at the dollar
store. It cuts the water pressure for me and it makes washing my hair a
whole lot easier when I don't do it in the shower.

She was right, of course. They'll thicken up. Mine were teeny like yours
and looked like micros to me. But they've thickened up a LOT.
When I don't roll my hair, my permed ends curl up on their own. I think
I've mentioned this before. I have no idea why they do that, but it looks
rather cute to me, so I don't worry about the ends looking different than
the locked hair. It all matches quite well. (But I still want the perm
off asap!)
For example, I just washed my hair and I'm letting it air dry. The ends
are curly/fuzzy and have turned under as if I had used a curling iron on
them. It's a miracle! LOL!
Ah yes... we must endure. But you'll love it... even with the permed
ends. As part of learning about my hair, I've also learned how the permed
ends work with my locks. The extra length is giving me more styling
options, so I've decided to keep it for awhile... as long as it continues
to look like it looks now. If it starts straightening out or looking
crazy, I'm whacking it off immediately!
We're happy right along with you Missy. It's a wonderful journey, and
we're so happy to be travelling it right along with you.

parted my hair in section then had it all going str8

I think about that kinda stuff, and if I remember
correctly I did care but then shrugged it off by
saying heck we all are here to get our hair done. One
minute of looking crazy will suffice...lol
I am guessing and then used a measuring tape this

they are by babies sigrid. The newborns...
Going by the Sisterlock card with the 3 sizes small
medium and large being x'd out I think I choose
medium, but today my locklook small. My loctician said
not to worry as I get re-tightenings, the new growth
will get them to that width. In my opinion right now I
have micro's.

like to cut the umbilical cord, but I must endure this
stepchild for a bit.
Anyway the brown paper and alumnmum worked out great.

its own...lol

Missys is Free

2007-01-21 01:20:37

Evening or morning all its 1am and I have
Sisterlocks...I have taken pictures and since I am
still living in and out of the dark ages. I have to
get them developed then I can upload them for all to
see. Most of the perm my loctician cut out and i am
glad she did, otherwise it would look very different.
I am having fun thinking of all the new wraps I plan
to buy to cover my babies until they are of adolescent
age, or mature a little.
For right now I did a brown paperbag set on the
ends...
Of course I have to follow in my sistahs steps and
create a Journal of my Free To Be Me...
Thank you all for all the beginners questions, now its
on to the upkeep stuff. I am on my way to search the
archives.

Sisterlocks Spray Moisturizer

Is the spray moisturizer OK to use on 4-month old Sisterlocks? Should I
continue to use only the moisture treatment, or can I use either moisturizer?

LockItUp@egroups.com writes:
<< That's one of the things I've learned in all my questions and research of
Sisterlocks. The parting pattern was designed to make it easy to part you
hair for just about any style. When the parts are put in correctly, you
won't have any problem styling.
My parts seem to be very uniform as my consultant assured me they would be.
When I tried the twist my hair seemed a little too fuzzy. When you do that
style on straight hair, the hair has gel and is usually blow dried to make it
very neat and together. I don't know if it can look that perfect with
natural hair but I probably need to practice or as Sandy said get someone
else to do it.
BTW as an update even though I know you all are probably tired of me whining
about my parts, the problem seems to be solved. I mentioned before how I
changed my part from the left side (where my consultant put it) to the right
side which is how I have worn it for years. Well, it seemed like the little
parts in the top of my hair would never go away and this was giving me some
distress. Last night I was playing around and put the part back on the left.
Instantly most of my parts were covered. My hair looks much fuller. I
guess it must have something to do with how the consultant put in my locks
and the part on the left works best.
I know this is long but I am off work for a while due to a bout of pneumonia.
I would not slow down when I had a bad cold and now I have to. I really
don't feel that sick but have been ordered to rest. So I have all of this
time on my hands. It is very difficult to do nothing.
Thank you for listening so to speak and thanks for this forum.

Re: size of Sisterlocks

2007-01-20 03:53:11

Hi:
My hair is very thick and my locks are almost 4 years old. My locks
were thinner when they were started. Lock sizes are determined by the
density of the hair and the parting size used. My consultant created
smaller locks in the front and larger locks in the back. The size is
comparable to others with Sisterlocks who have hair similar to mine. My
locks in front are thinner than the ones in back. If my locks were
thinner than what they are now, they would be micros and I would not
have Sisterlocks now because of the number of locks that I would have
had to maintain.
Peace,
Angel

way off the subject, but Angel, I saw your picture in the 2000

your locks are a bit fatter than normal. Is that just the thickness
of your hair or did you con your consultant into making 'em bigger?

Re: [LockItUp] perm grow out or cut

I truly wish I had done it that way.
But now that I have about a inch to an inch and a half of locked hair (it

Locking up all strands

2007-01-17 19:54:58

I have no loose sprigs. The nape hair finally locked!
Woo hoo!!!<<
That must feel nice! My nape locked the fastest because they
get wet everyday in the shower and I don't do anything with
them (no rolling/twisting). After 18 months, I still have some
unlocked locs though. They are really springy and can be combed
right out. Not complaining -- it makes the loc journey all the
more interesting.

Re: [LockItUp] several responses

2007-01-17 07:06:13

It would if you get Sisterlocks with the perm still in. If you cut it off
before you get the Sisterlocks, you won't have that stringy look, but
you'll have very short hair. The choice is yours. Personally I wish I had
waited and let my hair grow a couple more inches and then cut my perm off
before getting the Sisterlocks. Don't get me wrong... I don't dislike the
way my hair looks now. I just hate permed hair and don't want any of it on
my head. <g

From Khumura:
Nope, I am starting with double strand twists. I can't afford the time or
distance for sisterlocs. I started with twists before, but I hated the way
the roots started to look after a while (afro with lil snakes coming out of
it) and so I took them out. However, if I do the crochet at the roots, it
tightens the new growth nicely.

Starting Locs

2007-01-16 15:51:59

Greetings ya'll!!
Okaay, I have been tip-toeing around letting my hair loc for most of
the year, and finally due to an intense time crunch that just will
NOT allow me to take my usual 5-8 hours to untwist, wash, condition,
moisturize and then retwist my hair I have decided to take the
plunge. In other words, I don't have a free day to waste. I know how
to handle the roots (a little crocheting) and have experimented on
the back of my head to grand sucess. My issues is this: My hair along
the twist (oh yeah... I'm working with about 6-9 (depending on
whether it's 'boingy' or pulled out) inches of all natural hair, that
is realllly fine and soft, twisted in double strand twists) is...well
fuzzy. When I first started them all of the hair was IN the twist,
but now I have these bone straight strands of hair that have escaped
from the twist, as well as fuzzy curly pieces that just sort of puff
out. Is this something I will have to learn to live with, or can I do
something to keep the locs smooth and neat looking while they are
locing and maturing? All I put in it to start was some clear water
based gel and some Mink Oil moisturizer(GREAT STUFF) by african
pride. If you ladies have ANY ideas, I would love to hear them....
Wish me luck on my journey...

Khumura's advice is the best because Dr. Bronners' Liquid

You'll love it!

Need Advice

2007-01-15 14:25:53

A question for the consultants:
I ran out of SL starter shampoo and moisturizer, and Everette's is out of
it too. I can stand skipping a week of washing, but I just *have* to put
something no my scalp to moisturize it.
I have some jojoba oil. Will that be OK to use? I haven't had any
slippage problems; and after 4 months I sure don't want to start now.
I also have Ebene Naturals scalp treatment -- it's a blend of natural oils.

Rinse Recipe

2007-01-15 01:23:02

I found the following recipe on the R.O.O.T.S. site.
The following is a direct quote. This is a really nice site. You should
check it out. Good information.
Chamomile Rinse
This rinse is my favorite! First brew any chamomile herbal tea. It should
only contain the leaves of the chamomile flower. After it has steeped for
at least 3 minutes let it cool (this can also be a two fold regime. As the
tea steeps in a bowl, try draping a towel over your head and let the tea
penatrate a clean face while steaming hot. It gives the face a glow!) After
it is cool just rinse clean hair with the solution. This is not to be
washed out so make it the last thing you use during your hair cleaning.
Chamomile brightens, highlights and provides a sheen to dull looking hair.

research and I am concerned about the parts? I don't want
to see them. <<
You will see parts (or spaces) when you first get Sisterlocks.
They will look like you have microbraids. Everyone looks
different but Pat's pictures are the best to illustrate how
they CAN look in the beginning:
http://welcome.to/NaturalHairJourney
click on "Worth the Trip"
If you look at her pictures as they mature, you'll see less and
less spaces.
I posted a picture of me that Pat took at the Colorado training.
This shows that even after 17 months, you can see small spaces.
Note that I get frequent retightenings and my locs are small,
medium, and medium large. The smaller the locks, the smaller
the spaces.
http://www.egroups.com/files/LockItUp/Pictures/Sigrid%27s+Sisterlocks/

The "permanent parts" are from the trademarked Sisterlocks
parting pattern that the consultant used to section off your
head initially. They won't show unless you part your locs to
reveal them.

matter more on the thickness of your hair?

Non-diluted ACV applied on hands can cause hands to peel. It's best to

definitely more. Consult with an herbalist to make sure you've mixed it

Re:Copycat "Sisterlocks"

2007-01-08 09:37:18

Hello:
Thanks for the replies on this subject. I didn't ask the name of the
individual or her contact information so I can't report her. I do know
that she was from Los Angeles. I was just so surprised to see someone
with something that was basically a copycat version of Sisterlocks and
in addition, spreading falsehoods about Sisterlocks.
There are many people who will claim that they can do Sisterlocks
and/or
"know" Sisterlocks is bad for the hair and their technique is better
(that is, they say what is necessary to win the work and the money).
As earlier posts in previous messages mentioned, there are many people
out there who give Sisterlocks a bad name because they don't want to
invest the the time and effort to learn Sisterlocks but still want the
cash for doing their unofficial version of Sisterlocks. When in doubt
contact the Sisterlocks Home office, ask for references and do your
homework. It's your hair and you deserve that for which you paid.
Cheers,

Everette's Takes Its Classes on the Road!

2007-01-08 06:53:58

As many of you know, I'm the web designer for Everette's Cornrows &
Braiding Academy (http://www.everettes-cornrows.com).
Because Everette's has learned that there are some areas of the country in
which people are having a hard time finding people trained and skilled in
natural hair care, Sheila is thinking of travelling to two or three cities
next year to offer natural hair care and braiding classes in other areas of
the country.
If you live in an area where natural hair care is unavailable, or if you're
interested in taking such a class, please respond to the questions below.
She's thinking of holding the classes in hotels in large cities that would
be central to areas that might be in need of such classes. In order to get
your input to help decide on these cities, please send an email with the
following information to: classes@...
PLEASE SEND YOUR RESPONSES TO THE ABOVE EMAIL ADDRESS, NOT TO THE ANHA

In what city and state do you live?
Which large city near you would be centrally located for people in your
region to attend classes?
Thank you for your response.
Once a decision is made, it will be announced on the Everette's website.

it's better to use a product that is already pH balanced. If you use

Save the Shea for the skin

2007-01-07 08:39:33

I've been in the Sisterlocks Training class taking a refresher course
these past two days. The topic of safe products to use came up and Shea
Butter was mentioned as a product to NOT use in your Sisterlocks. The
reasoning was that anything solid at room temperature will become solid
again in your locks. If not rinsed out properly, it will leave a residue
and build up. It was also said that rinsing was not guaranteed to remove
all of the Shea butter. Over time, it could promote bacteria growth. It
was said that Shea butter is wonderful for your skin, however.
Safe products include light moisture sprays and light moisture creams.
One more thing, one consultant with VERY thin hair said that she could
not use any type of rollers because they were all too heavy for her
hair. A curling ironed burned her hair because it was too thin. However,
she had the most beautiful curls on the ends of her locks. She achieved
this result by rolling the ends of her locks on aluminum foil.

Sisterlocks being done, figured a way to do it themselves (not exactly like
Sisterlocks but close enough to make a buck), and is capitalizing on
Joanne's creation.

Alternative way to create uniform locks

2007-01-06 18:59:18

Hello:
Has anyone heard a way to create locs using tools simular to those used
for Sisterlocks with same tip-to-root pattern? In general this
technique advocates locs in sizes simular to medium to large
Sisterlocks.
I ran into a woman today who practices this techmique on herself and
clients. She claims that she has joined locs for several persons who
have Sisterlocks because she believes Sisterlocks damage the hair
(Disclaimer: Sisterlocks do not damage the hair when done properly. Any
natural hair technique applied to the hair can damage the hair and/or
scalp when done improperly. ) She was surprised to see that my
Sisterlocks of 4 years were so thick and healthy! It makes me wonder if
she was actually repairing genuine Sisterlocks.
Cheers,
Angel

Shampooing

2007-01-06 13:27:06

What is the proper procedure for washing mature Sisterlocks? I'm
specifically referring to getting to the scalp.
I'm pretty much used to giving my scalp a good scrub with my fingertips;
and since I'm gotten my Sisterlocks, I've been staying away from doing
that. I braid and band and then massage and manipulate the braids. I
don't get in there and give my scalp any attention during washing.
It's probably a psychological kind of thing, but my scalp is crying out for
some attention. I don't mean it feels dirty. I just mean that it would
just feel so good to give my scalp a good fingertip scrub when I wash my hair.
So the question is: Once my Sisterlocks have matured to a point that I no
longer have to braid and band them, is it OK to scrub the scalp when I
shampoo? Will it *ever* be OK to do this?
Those of you with mature locks... how do you go about it?

I don't want anyone to think I was trying to criticize their hair
grooming techniques. I know there are different strokes for
different folks. In response to Sandy's question, I think my
consultant was a bit heavy handed and I did tell her at times she was
hurting my head and she was ease up for a while, but then get right
back to pulling and stressin' my scalp. That may have been because
she hadn't done many heads before mine. But I also heard from
someone else she worked on that she hurt her scalp too, so I know it
wasn't just me.
And in response to Sigrid's question, there is another very good
consultant in my area. But honestly I LOVE doing my own hair. It
calms my nerves after a long day at work and I just do it while I'm
chillin' watching TV or something. I also think there's power in
having control over a permanent extension of me. My locks have
become almost a spiritual antenae. They have opened my eyes to soo
many perspectives of my personality. I've learned to love all of
myself, the way God created me.I think a large part of that discovery
was due to accepting the natural qualities of my hair that I used to
hate, the nappiness, and seeing it now as something beautiful that I
wouldn't want straight or any other way. My nappiness extends all the
way down to the roots...of not only my scalp but my heritage and
spirituality...therefore it's about more than a hairstyle (as ya'll
have heard before) but it's soo true.
...Plus I must admit I'm cheap and always have been and I can't
rationalize giving somebody $20/hr to do something I can do myself.
I used to do my own micro-braids so retightenings are not nearly the
hassle.
Once again thank ya'll for your comments and support.
Much Luv to you all!

That's great, and I'm looking forward to the time when I can maintain my

year so she can do any repairs or extra maintenance that may be necessary.

so often? ... I just want to understand what's the
advantage to washing so often? or is it just a habit?<<
Everyone's head is different and reacts differently to
shampooing frequency. I shampoo every 5-7 days for a few
reasons:
1. I tend to get dandruff. After shampooing, I apply the
ACV+Sage rinse and the dandruff stays away. I've tried to
stretch it to 2 weeks. I applied the Witch Hazel on lint
free cloths to my scalp and that delayed the dandruff a bit.
2. My locs don't have the same bounce after 1 week. They
also start to hang straight and feel heavier. Even
a spritzing w/rolling them up doesn't work as well as a
wash & set.
3. I like the way my locs look, feel, and smell
immediately after I've shampooed. Wet locs are cute and
since I use Dr. Bonner's Peppermint Liquid Castile Soap,
followed by the rinse and then topped off with my Akentee
Express' Shea Butter w/essential oil blend, they smell
terrific. Also, I usually let them dry in the rubber
rods, they look beautiful the next AM.
(Hope this doesn't sound boastful.)
Infrequent washing is a good idea in early stages and your
locking success is proof. I hope this helps explains why
some of us can't do it.

Re: [LockItUp] Are retightenings supposed to hurt?

2007-01-04 17:05:22

I'm one of those people who goes to sleep during the retightening
process. I think your consultant was just a bit heavy-handed; and if you
had told her that she's pulling too tight, she probably would have
lightened up.
I've always washed my hair once a week. Plus I like the Sisterlocks better
when it's been washed, because of the perm. My permed ends tend to get
straight after a few days. I don't like that look.
Yay! I'm getting there. The top has a way to go, though. I'm thinking
six or seven months should do it.
I like the dull roughness. I do get a natural sheen. The only products I
use are the sisterlocks starter shampoo and the sisterlocks moisture
treatment. And I only use the moisture treatment on shampoo day.

Are retightenings supposed to hurt?

2007-01-04 14:08:23

Hi I'm Lakevia and I haven't posted in a while but after reading
Carol's last message, it made me think about my past retightening
experiences. I used to actually DREAD going in for a retightening.
My consultant would actually be pulling on my hair and retightening
so tight that I would just be sitting in the chair praying to God
that the ordeal would soon be over. Those session hurt much worse
than any braids I ever had and I'm not "tender headed". I took a
retightening class as soon as I got a chance and I've been doing my
own retightening since (over 7 months now) pain free. I just thought
my experience was unique because I remember Dr. Cornwell stating that
the sisterlocks technique does not apply tension to the scalp and
that it's not a painful process. I was just wondering if anyone else
shared similar experiences.
Another question I had is why do ya'll wash your hair so often? I
can understand if you're like Sandy and swim often. But other than
that I don't see the purpose in washing your hair every week or more
frequently (like I hear many of you do). I'm not knockin' anybody
for doing this, I just want to understand. I find that my hair has a
natural healthy sheen and softness, plus it just looks better when I
don't wash as often. Also I would think that washing that often
would disturb the locking process, even if you do follow the banding
procedure. My consultant told me, when I first got my locks, not to
wash them for at least 2 weeks to a month. I think that, along with
the kinky texture of my hair, explains why I did not experience much
slippage if any. My hair was also completely locked after about 4 to
5 months (excluding the perm which I chopped off as soon as I noticed
my hair was fully locked). I just find from my personal experience
that after washing my hair, it is usually dull, rougher and I prefer
not to use a lot of products on my hair to provide the sheen and
softness that I can achieve naturally. I just want to understand
what's the advantage to washing so often? or is it just a habit?
Well those were my two issues for now. Thanks for listening.

Does the Caruso set have small rollers in it? I looked at the box in
Kmart and I could not tell. My hair is short in places and needs a
smaller roller. So far I have been wearing rods and getting in the
shower without a cap. I figured the steam would be good for my hair
and help set it. It works OK.
BTW I shampooed and I am a little less freaked about the parts that
before.
People mentioned how their hair is different in several places on
their scalp. Besides that I noticed that my scalp is different in
sections also. It is kind of sore after the tightening session kind
of like after getting braids but not as sore. I think I am tender
headed. I noticed that I was uncomfortable when the sides and nape
was being tightened but could barely feel anything in the crown area.
My girls are tender in those areas also.
Every woman over 40 in my family has thinning hair in the top. Some
are actually bald there. I will be 40 next month and I am wondering
if I am thinning there also. In fact that is one of the reasons that
I stopped perming. Did anyone else notice if the top of their head
took the longest to fill in? I can understand the rest being covered
from how the hair is falling but I guess I am trying to find out if
it is normal for the top to look thinner or if it looks thinner
because it is.
I know I am obsessing and I am kind of tired. I was too nosy to go
to bed last night. I had to stay up to see who won the election. The
thing is I still am not sure.

Re: [LockItUp] Hair Styling Ideas

I don't think you're doing anything wrong. That's how permed hair
acts. Maybe a satin scarf would work better than a bonnet, though, for
keeping the sides down. Also, perm rods last longer for me than than the
Caruso rollers. Maverickwear has two very nice ones that would work great
for you. Check them out at http://www.maverickwear.com.
I too have lots of perm still in my hair, so I'm feelin' ya.
Since your locks are so new, I wouldn't be manipulating them too much just
yet. A headband and/or curling iron (only on the permed ends) might help.

That is a very good idea. I got my locks retightened last night and I am
kind of disappointed that I have all this scalp showing again. My hair had
filled in nicely and now it seems like I am back to square one again. Of
course not as much as when I first got the locks but almost. My hair must be
thin on the top because I see a lot of scalp in the top. Will it be like
this after every tightening? Maybe washing will help. This reminds me of
when I used to get a touch up and how I hated how thin and stringy my hair
looked until the first shampoo. That is exactly what my husband said when I
got home. "It looks thin and stringy." My hair is thin and fine but I
thought that in its natural state it would look thicker.
As for posting pictures showing your parts: I for one am glad that Sandy and
Pat did. It gave me an idea as to what to expect. If I only saw PICS of nice
thick heads of hair and I ended up with that plucked chicken look I would
have been extremely upset.
My consultant is very happy when my hair though. She thinks that it is
growing quickly and she keeps saying how my hair is loving this. She says
that you should roll your hair in order to stretch those relaxed ends to keep
them straight so that they won't knot up into the lock. She mentioned a
client of hers that just puts her hair in a ponytail and ended up with a
knotted mess. So I will keep on rolling my hair weekly.
Give me patience Lord, Oh Lord, patience....

Two questions about SisterLocks...

2007-01-02 21:35:11

Hello, everyone... I have not had a relaxer on my hair for the past
two years and my hair is about 5-6 inches long all over. I've worn
it braided for most of that time, but now I wear a braided wig (the
kind with microbraids attached to a headband) because it's simple and
I don't have the tension of braids & extensions. My question is
this: if I get my sisterlocks put in, can I still cover them with my
wig or hat? The reason I ask is because it's winter time and my head
gets too cold if it is not covered up. And, my second question is
why are some of the Sisterlock pics showing very small
(circumference) locks and others are larger (wider locks)? If all
the hair is nappy, wouldn't the locks be all the same size? And, I do
have a third question I just thought of: if you want to change your
hair coloring to make it a little lighter, should you do that before
you get your hair in Sisterlocks or can you do it hair is locked?
Thanks very much.
Jennifer in Dallas...

Re: [LockItUp] Two questions about SisterLocks...

2007-01-02 21:22:55

The definitive answer is yes. But while I understand why you'd want to
wear a hat in the winter, I don't understand why you'd want to wear a
wig. Why put all that money and care into something and then cover it
up? But then that's just me.
They come in various sizes, large, medium, small, and micro. The average
head has two or three different size locks. It's done in a specific
pattern which can be better explained by one of the consultants on the
list. Also, size can vary depending on the length of time you've had your
locks. Mine are thicker now than they were a month or so ago.
No. For two reasons. We all have different textures on our head. My hair
grows in 2 distinct textures. The hair in the back is kinkier, the hair in
the top is more wavy than kinky. So it locks differently. The hair in the
back is locking much faster than the top, and that -- along with different
sized locks being used -- accounts for why you see different sized locks on
someone's head.
I know the locks around my hairline and sides were put in smaller than the
rest. Using different sizes in different areas of the head makes for
better and easier styling versatility.
Like I said... a consultant can better explain this, but this is my
understanding of it.
That's one that I'm going to leave alone becaue I have no experience in
that one.

Little Brotherlocks

2007-01-02 04:03:27

Well I'm back after several days of not being online. I was busy
taking care of some business but also I put Brotherlocks in my 11 3/4
year old son't hair. He will be 12 in January two days after my
birthday. So he often states his "exact" age these days.
I had asked him several times but he would not let me do it. Keep
cutting his hair. Finally this week "out of the blue" he decided he
would cut the sides and back and lock the top. YEAh"
Well for my "first" customer he was a challenge but a sprite of it
all a good sport. I would do a few locks then he would want to
break. Or he would be playing Playstation or Game Boy, or he would
be sleep.
Yes, he's one of those little boys who I had to fight to comb his
hair all the time. That is until this school year. This is his
first year of Middle School and I noticed I difference in grooming
habits. Not that he was dirty but just being the boy he is. I think
he's discovered girls.
I had taken off work on Thursday and Friday to do some other
business, also the kids were off for Fall break. So timing was just
perfect.
I took my time ('cause I'm still slow) so it did take me most of the
weekend off and on to complete. He has 1 - 1 1/2 of natural hair in
most places. There were a few places in the back where the hair was
shorter. I figured if I could master hair this short then when I do
someone with longer hair it should be easy in comparison. There were
a few places where I could not catch the hair to put in pattern so I
just 2 strand twisted it. His hair grows real fast so I will check
it in a week and if I can Brotherlock that.
So now you know the rest of the story.
I will upload some pictures later this week.
Maybe there is hope for "Perm Queen" my 15 year old daughter. She's
not interested because it's too much like Mom. But you know how boys
are. "That's my boy"
I will have to get a report when he comes home from school.
When it was over he said.
"WOW ..... I don't have to comb or do anything .... this is COOL"
He likes it ... a labor of love.....

Locked Up Niece

2007-01-02 02:19:46

I helped my sister lock up my niece last week and
she looks FABULOUS. She has 16-20 inches of hair
with 0-6 inches of perm/texturizer on the ends.
She washed her hair yesterday and the look on her
face said "I LOVE THIS". (You folks know how
good we look with freshly washed Sisterlocks.) My
sister bumped her permed ends with a curling wand
so she would still be happy when her locs dry
completely.
(Sandy, I told her to be patient -- she wants to
whack the ends off already!)
Her favorite hairstyle was braids but you know
how old taking them down every 2-3 months can be.
Well, since her curl pattern is long, braids only
lasted 1 month in her head. She remarked that her
locs look better than the braids because it's 100%
NATURAL and the naPtural texture shows.
When she wasn't in braids, her hair would be put
up in a roll of some kind. Yep, she is wearing
her Sisterlocks up a lot too.
When I get her permission, I may post some
pictures Pat Hunley took of us locking her. You
can find of picture of her before locking here:
http://www.bewellnet.com/phunley/colorado/
She is pictured in the 7th & 8th picture on the
page with her hair up (of course). In the 8th
picture, Grace Abolaji is timing her locking.
I hear that she scored the fastest locking time
and I know how meticulous (picky, actually) she
is. She will be a great consultant.
(Yes, I am a very proud auntie.)
