The Lord is my strength and my redeemer ..... who should I (we) fear.
Please let me know ...if necessary e-mail me in private.
I know for some this may seem off topic and an inappropriate way to reply to

make our petitions know.
I plead the blood of Jesus over this situation. Even though I don't know the

Your Prayers Are Needed

Hotep Everyone,
I joined your group in September and have only posted once or
twice, so many of you don't know me. I have been reading all of your
posts as much as possible, but haven't responded or commented because
I've limited my Internet time to tend to my family and job.
It is with a very heavy heart that I write this message. My
Sisterlocks consultant and friend has been battling breast cancer for
about a year now. She was doing quite well for a while, but in the
past few weeks, she has had a setback. Her name is Linda Buchanan,
and she is a wonderful, quality person. She is responsible for many,
many beautifully coifed, Sisterlocked and Brotherlocked people
strutting their stuff around San Diego. She works in the Sisterlocks
Home Office and she is JoAnne Cornwell's number one assistant.
Please find the time to send prayers and positive energy Linda's
way. I talked to her this evening to ask her permission to put this
out on the Internet. If you would like to send her a word of
encouragement, e-mail me at MarthaX@... and I will print it out
and take it to her.
Asante sana.

Re: [LockItUp] Hair washing- was hair glossiness

2006-12-27 22:07:43

OK. Gotcha. Consultants seem to differ on this. Some say don't wash your
hair for the first few weeks, others say you can go ahead and wash it. But
always you *must* use the bands.
Well just be sure to use the bands from now on. I pull a few locks
together and braid them, then fold the braid down and band it so it stays
folded over. I squirt the starter shampoo into the base of the braids and
rub (not scrub) the scalp area. Then I squeeze/squish each braid over and
over until I feel that they are clean.is going through them. Then I rinse
with water and do the whole thing again. After rinsing the shampoo out the
second time, I pour on the herbal rinse. I then dry with a towel by
patting/squeezing my head -- not rubbing. Then I pull the end of each
braid until the band pops off. I never pull on the bands.
Some times I leave it braided for a crinkly look. Other times I take the
braids down. I always let it air dry. And I apply a very small amount of
Sisterlocks moisture treatment in the parts.
I do this once a week, and I started the second or third week after getting
my Sisterlocks.

Hair washing- was hair glossiness

2006-12-27 19:29:57

A question: Do you have to pay her every time she washes your hair?
- Sandy,
Sorry for the confusion. No, I do not go back to her every time I
need to wash my hair. I have only had my hair washed 5/6 times since
having my sisterlocks. The first month I was instructed not to wash
my hair but to cleanse my scalp only to let the locks settle. Then I
had my 1st retightening and got it washed then. Now it is my second
month (October) and I have washed it once or twice a week ( without
bands)during a 4 week period.

Re: Hair rinse

2006-12-27 08:47:32

Gwen,
If you are asking for the Pamela Ferrell ACV rinse to
reduce dandruff and eliminate itchy scalps, this is it:
3 ounces of apple cider vinegar (ACV)
1 quart of distilled water
1 teaspoon of sage oil
Use weekly after shampoo as a final rinse

Hair rinse

2006-12-27 08:16:37

Would someone please post the rinse again? I missed it when it was posted
earlier.
Thanks
Gwen

ACV

2006-12-26 22:35:13

Petroletum or petrolatum (or many other derivations of the same) is made
from petroleum. If the word looks similar to petroleum, you can pretty
much count on it being a petroleum product.

Re: Hair glossiness- Help

2006-12-26 20:53:34

Is your hair dry? What are you using
for a moisturizer? Something light and not oily I hope.
---Thank you ladies for your advice. I will try the ACV rinse this
week. By the way, where do I get Sage oil from? I was told by my
consultant to use a light moisturizer so I have been using one by
some Herbal something- can't remember.
Did you braid and band your hair before washing? You should do this
before every shampoo to keep the locks from coming undone. Call your
consultant immediately. Tell her about your problems.
--No, I don't braid and band my locks but it looks like I should
start to. I will from now on after my next retightening. I will also
talk to my consultant then.
Thanks again,
Theresa

Re: [LockItUp] Curls Wanted

2006-12-26 05:38:28

Hmm... I'm surprised to hear this, Kim. I always thought natural hair
would hold a curl better/longer than permed hair. It's another reason I'm
looking forward to being completely perm free.
Remember you can mail the picture to me, and I'll scan it and compress it
for you.

Curls Wanted

2006-12-26 05:15:00

I guess it's time for me to give the Caruso rollers a try. I was holding
out. I washed my hair and rolled my locks on medium sized
perm rods while my hair was still wet. The curls lasted only two days.
My hair has grown and doesn't hold a curl anymore. Any
suggestions?
Also, I couldn't wait any longer and cut off my ends three nights ago.
They weren't permed ends, just the curly-q that wasn't so cute
anymore. I was going to wait until my Sisterlocks were a year old, but I
got tired of waiting. They'll be a year this Veteran's Day
weekend. So far, so good. None have unraveled. I cut them at an angle
instead of a blunt cut. I'll post a picture if I can ever remember
to scan photos while at work. I don't have a scanner at home.

*******
Just a thought:
Two Days We Should Not Worry
There are two days in every week about which we should not worry, two
days which should be kept free from fear and apprehension.
One of these days is Yesterday with all its mistakes and cares, its faults
and blunders, its aches and pains.
Yesterday has passed forever beyond our control. All the money in the
world cannot bring back Yesterday.
We cannot undo a single act we performed; we cannot erase a single word we
said.
Yesterday is gone forever.
The other day we should not worry about is Tomorrow with all its possible
adversities, its burdens, its large promise and its poor performance.
Tomorrow is also beyond our immediate control.
Tomorrow's sun will rise, either in splendor or behind a mask of clouds, but
it will rise.
Until it does, we have no stake in Tomorrow, for it is yet to be born.
This leaves only one day, Today. Any person can fight the battle of just one
day. It is when you and I add the burdens of those two awful eternity's
Yesterday and Tomorrow that we break down.
It is not the experience of Today that drives a person mad, it is the
remorse or bitterness of something which happened Yesterday and the dread of
what Tomorrow may bring.
Let us, therefore, Live but one day at a time.

Beleive me I know .... I just talked about this on my 10 months
picture page.
http://www.bewellnet.com/phunley/10months/index.htm
Just a question. Are you banding your locks when washing?
Also pay close attention to the water pressure. Sometimes we
can be too hard when washing our hair. I've gotten use to the
lack of shine. I don't like putting much in my hair other then
the Sisterlock products. I don't like the film some of the
other products leave. I'm in Colorado where it is dry so I
really don't expect the shine as much. Perhaps someone else
could give some feedback.

Hair glossiness- Help

2006-12-24 15:04:26

Any suggestions on how to get my hair to shine. Today it looks dull
and lifeless. I know because of the texture, tightly ccoiled hair has
less of a shine than flat relaxed hair but I miss my shiny hair.
Does anyone know of a product I could use for gloss? Today is one of
those hair malay days. I am thinking about coloring it with Feria?
It has only been 2 months with my locks and yes I am wavering. I
washed my hair last night and about 10 locks came undone. My hair has
been completely natural for a year now. Please, any suggestions would
be appreciated.

About the Guidelines

2006-12-22 23:40:16

Thanks Kim. There's another one I forgot to add, but I'll add it today.
For those of you who receive the list by digest, it would be very helpful
to everyone if when responding to a message you type that message's subject
on your subject line. Receiving a message with the subject line of "Digest
Number 123" doesn't help us to know what the subject is about.
I know it's one extra thing to do, but it makes it easier for all of us
(especially those on digest) to keep up with the discussions we're
particularly interested in.

It doesn't have a pleasant smell. I was advised to mix it with
something. I still haven't used mine yet, because I'm afraid to put
different stuff on my hair. This Veteran's day, it will be a year since
I got my Sisterlocks and mine still aren't locked on the top yet. So
I'm waiting to use the Shea Butter. However, I plan to mix it with the

lumpy locks

2006-12-22 06:08:08

Hi, All!
In regards to the bunching issue-I, too, have some lumpy locks, mostly in
the back of my head, and I started with all natural hair. My consultant
was very puzzled as to how this happened, as am I. When she started my
locks, I could not leave the loose ends that were not in tha pattern loose,
so some I double strand twisted, and some I just coiled around my finger
with some gel. It seems that the ones I double strand twisted bunched and
the ones I coiled did not. I've been able to trim some down so that they
are a little more uniform, and as they get longer, I'll start cutting off
the lumpy ends. It does not bother me too much-only someone digging in my
head could tell that they are not uniform, but it does annoy me sometimes
that they are not as symmetrical as they could and should be. Since my
locks are 18 months old, I think its too late to correct this problem, so
its just something I have to live with. It happened in between
re-tightenings, and I was going every 8 weeks at the time. It happened so
fast that by the time we noticed, it was too late. I don't know if there
was something I could have done to prevent this from happening in the first
place, or that is just the way my hair is, but word to the wise-bunching
can happen to all natural hair too...

Thinking About Sisterlocks

2006-12-20 21:16:52

Please keep in mind that braiding over the locks really isn't
necessary. It's an option, but not a necessity. I started 3 months ago
with permed hair. I let it grow out to about 2 inches of new growth before
I got my Sisterlocks. My hair is doing just fine, and I'm enjoying the
styles that I've tried. It's almost maintenance free, and there are no bad
hair days.
If you haven't visited my website, you can see my progress at
http://home.earthlink.net/~diamonique/lockitup/journey.html
You can use a hairdryer, although you should refrain from using heat as
much as possible in the first few months. I have a hair dryer, but I
haven't used it since I got my Sisterlocks. I prefer to let my hair air
dry because the permed ends don't straighten out like they do with a hair
dryer. Sisterlocks are easy. Just wash it and go on about your business.
I'm sure you'll hear from others with their responses to your
question. One thing that I appreciate about the people who have joined
this list is that they are always willing to give their thoughts and let
you know about their experiences.

Hi
Just thinking about getting the sisterlocks. After seeing my friends and
knowing how much she loved them, I have been trying to find out more about
them.
Since I have a head full of permed hair, I thought I might get the locks with
the braids over them.
My question is: can one use a hairdryer to dry the hair once it has been
locked? I have kept up with the daily digest and I see no mention of the
drying method.
Thank you

about 2 months now and my hair is GLORIOUS!My hair has been natural
for about 10 years and I've worn it with extensions {synthetic and
human hair} for that long. I tried to lock back then and boy was it a
mess! However I must say my baby locs get quite a bit of attention! I
can't wait to have a mature head of locs. They are shiny and
beautiful with NO OIL. I do use the Sisterlocs moisture cream once a
week though. I just braid them in 4 big braids every nite and,
voila', c'est magnifique'! I wish other sisters knew how beautiful
their natural hair could be. Happy to be in such nappy and graceful
company.

I tried the Apple-Cider vinegar rinse when I did my hair yesterday, although
& didn't have distilled water, I used tap water, but one thing I noticed is
that the smell was very strong. I think that the next time I will use it, I
will make less of the solution. Anyway, I was wondering, for those of you

your scalp? Also, do you use anything else on your scalp after using the
rinse? I normally use an oil that I get from Carol's Daughter, but I haven't

Just finished Sisterlocks training in Denver. Celeste
Geary taught it and she was really good. She was
surprised to see the turn out. For the retightening
portion she had 12 or more people (she normally
teaches 5 at a time). There was 7 of us (including
my niece) taking the new consultant training portion
and 2 more consultants exercised the option to
retake the class. We now have 11 consultants in
Colorado and every nappy head needs to be locked up!
Celeste promised to be back next year but said that
she plans to drag Joanne out with her. I'll take
the class again then or take it at the Homecoming.
At first, I had planned to just take the class so that
I could have more knowledge on how to care for my own
head and the locs on my family & buddies. I thought I
might want to lock up a couple of my cousins for fun.
After I got into a live head and saw how relaxing it
was to do, and fulfilling to complete a uniform loc, I
changed my mind. I might just go ahead and get
certified. I actually heard that I "graduated at the
top of the class". Boy, that felt good. But then,
I've been wearing Sisterlocks for 17 months and have
been retightening my own head off and on for over a
year. Shame on me if I didn't perform well!
The problem is this: now I can't just "speak my mind"
publicly regarding Sisterlocks if I get certified.
Oh well.

Colorado training .... This weekend!!!!!

2006-12-13 07:49:35

Hey all .....
We start our "first" Colorado training class on Saturday. I'm real excited
to attend class again. I was sooo tired during the homecoming training. So
I hope to get some of my questions answered during this weekend. Also I will
do my first head on Tuesday. I will be helping Grace my Sisterlock
consultant do a client.
Well on Saturday after class we will have a general question and answer
session for trainees and Sisterlock customers who are present. This will
happen at 5:00 or so depending on how long class goes.
If there are any questions anyone wants us to ask Celeste our trainer and
JoAnne's sister please list them and e-mail them to me. I will check my
mail tomorrow before I go to the hotel.
I promise I will pass them on. In fact I will get Sigrid to help me with
this if she will......???
I know I asked for questions before for Yvonne in Miami ... and I'm guilty
of forgetting to send them. I get REAL busy and often find myself
overwhelm. This is something in my personal life that I'm working on.
Anyway... I will take pictures during the weekend.
Colorado is REAL excited about our new trainees. We have BIG plans for
networking including perhaps more web sites and local events about natural
haircare. LOOK for more information later.

Re: [LockItUp] springy hair

2006-12-10 05:45:28

Carina,
Before I began locking, my hair was about 2-3" past my shoulders. Since late
May it has shortened (people keep asking if I cut it) and is just about to
reach my shoulders again. I just assumed it was because of the coiling and
density of the locks. I started with very tiny two-strand twists so my hair
still has a "twisted" look to it. It will probably take some time to get the
length back but I'm so happy with the freedom and sense of self that others
have expressed. I'm beginning to get lots of compliments, even from
straightened sisters, so I know that others appreciate it too. That's saying
something in Spartanburg, SC. I've even found two beauticians who know how
to work with natural hair and they're not very expensive. So my journey is
taking off.... I don't have access to the right equipment so I haven't
submitted any pictures, but when I go home for Thanksgiving I'll get my
brother to upload some shots for me. I'm loving myself and my hair. And even
though it has lost some length, I've gained immensely in other ways -- the
length will come back.

Debbi

length or will my hair still be springy and coil up while it is
locked? Thanks a bunch, One love, Carina Chimdi.

Re: [LockItUp] Question for consultants out there.

I'm not a consultant, but I know what you mean. I don't hate my hair after
it's been retightened, but I do like it much better just before the
retightening. I equate it to the same way that my hair was always prettier
and fuller just before I got my perm retouched. And I really did hate a
fresh perm.
Like you, I wait a couple of days after a retightening and then wash my
hair. It fills in the parts, and I'm happy again. I can't go too long
without the retightening, though, because my locks start to grab each other
and I have to separate them every day. That's when I know it's time for a
retightening.

Question for consultants out there.

2006-12-06 06:22:50

I am into my 7 month with sisterlocks. My problem is that I hate
having my hair retightened. I love the spring that is in my hair
(and it looks thicker) just before I have to have my hair
retightened. My hair is thin so my scalp shows a lot after
retightening too. To me, my locks look so strectched out and so
straight and lifeless after retightening that I long for my locks to
get springy again so I wash my hair to fatten my locks up again.
Could any consultants out there explain the retightening process. It
seems that my consultant takes each lock and slides all the previous
loops out to the end of my locks or as far as they will go and then
she retightens the hair at the last loop on down to the root. Will
retightening take less time as my hair locks at the ends?
Peace

Re: Phytospecific Moisturising Balm

2006-12-05 11:27:35

When I wore my hair in a free-flowing natural style before I got my
locks, I went to a natural hair salon called Dyaspora here in NYC.
The stylist, Dianne DaCosta used this product on my hair as a
conditioner. She stated that it was good for people with "coarse
hair" read:nappy, short curl pattern hair, like me. If I remember,
the product was very similar to the reconstructor produced by
sisterlocks. It was very dense, rich and creamy. My only warning is
that because this product is very rich(it worked well to soften my
hair),if your locks aren't mature, there is a chance that you could
cause major slippage. In terms of getting rid of fuzz, if you have
the
kind of hair that is prone to fuzzing up, then this product is
probably too heavy for you. You may want to look through the archives
of both this eGroup and the other for specific poduct recommendations.

I'm interested in hearing from others -- when did you
know you were ready to lock it up? Do you think you
would have been ready much earlier?
No, I had to try everything else first. I have been wanting to go natural for
a long time but did not know how to manage my hair. I have always hated
relaxers. When it was time for my touch up I would go to the salon
begrudgingly.
I would get my hair done and come out looking nice and the next day my hair
would look like nothing. I just recently found out that women are going to
the salon on a weekly basis. I would be sitting in there and hear everyone
else say "see you next week." So I am thinking "is that what I have to do to
have my hair together always." Even if I could I would not go to a salon and
spend time and money every week. I did not want to sleep "pretty" either.
So I went to braids.
I am the kind of person who just cannot stand too much in my hair. I like
the braids but always could not wait to get them out. After about 2 weeks I
wanted that stuff out of my hair. Same with weaves. I could not stand them
for long.
I wore an afro for about 2 years. I loved that but I started to miss having
hair. There is only so much you can do with hair that short. So I was back
to braids to grow my hair and the relaxer when it got longer. I wore braids
for about 9 months before my sisterlocks because I wanted to have a good
length.
I was not too happy to sit all of those hours to get them put in but I am
happy now because my hair is so free. I don't have all of that extra hair in
my head, nor do I have the gels, pomades and hair spray. Yuk! I hate
hairspray. My hair is doing its own thing. It is very curly, springy and
crinkly. I literally just get up and go.
That's my hair story.

I wanted to get them as far back as 1992 but remember telling someone

Yes! I wanted to get locks in 1980 but was too afraid
to do so. Wish I had followed my heart. Glad that I
finally did!

Check the list of consultants in the LockItUp eGroups site
(http://www.egroups.com/group/lockitup
If you find one that doesn't have a phone number, you may be able to find
it in the phone book, or you can get the number from the Sisterlocks home
office.
I'll let the others guesstimate as to how long it would take to do your hair.

New Member & Questions

2006-12-03 21:38:40

Hello Everybody!!!
I have to say that is is going to be a great spot for me!! Work is
going slow today so I sat down and read through the entire archive,
and I must say that this list-serv is JUST what I am looking for. I
am currently on a couple of other groups, but ususally so
many 'issues' come up when people start talking about sisterlocks
that it isn't worth the headache.
I'm 23, and I have not had a perm in my head for *think* close to
five years now. I have about 7-9 inches of fine but thick completely
virgin hair (except for some Feria)...each strand is fine & light,
but WHOOO! do I have alot of strands. I have been toying with the
idea of locking for a while, but I want to be SURE that the locks I
get are neat and the size that I want them to be. Thus, sisterlocks
seems like the perfect thing for me. I am sick of paying someone to
put briads in my hair that only last for a little while...and I
REFUSE to get a perm. So, I figured if I am going to have my hair
braided all the time anyway, I might as well make it permenant and
get locks. I recently graduated from college, and I have a good job,
so I am more or less financially able to get the hook up. My problem
is this... I don't have a car, and I live in Indianapolis. When I
called the home office, they said that the closest consultants were
in Columbus, Oh and Detroit, Mi. I think I remember seeing something
about a consultant in Chicago, which is closer than Detroit I think.
Anyone know of a consultant in my area, and do you ladies have a clue
as to how long (days/hours) it would take me to get my hair done? I
want mostly large locks, so that they look more like traditional
ones.
Whoo.... I have done plenty of talking, but I feel like I KNOW you
guys after reading so many months of your conversation. Khumura (did
I getyour name right??) WHYYYYY do you have to be alllllll the way in
NYC? That salon of yours sounded tight as hell!!!
Thanks for listening to me...

When Did You KNOW You Were Ready?

2006-12-03 11:03:40

My niece is interested in locking her 18-20 inch hair.
She likes micro Sisterlocks and now has 20-30 at the
nape of her neck. She got 6 locs a couple of weeks ago
and last night my sister gave her the rest. She wanted
to know if I had known about Sisterlocks earlier at
what age would I have been ready.
I told her that I needed to experience the weaves and
other silliness and probably would have been ready at
30. I knew I was ready when I was wearing braids and
only really liked them when they were ready to be
rebraided. At that stage, my own coily hair came out
of the braids and made them not look so shiny and fake.
The braids were no longer stiff so they moved freely.
They even felt lighter than when they were first done.
My former braider (who wears locs) was the first to
notice that I was "ready".
I do wish I had gotten Sisterlocks 10 years earlier
but all things work together for good.
My niece likes her hair best when it is braided up and
she can get up and go and always look nice with very
little fuss. (She might be ready.)
I'm interested in hearing from others -- when did you
know you were ready to lock it up? Do you think you
would have been ready much earlier?

Re: Retightening

I agree -- it really depends on your hair texture too. Some
folks have that good hair (short curl pattern/nappy) that
allows them to go 2 months with no problem at all.
I plan to take it. It will be just past my six months mark.<<
You'll be so glad you did, Sandy. I plan to tighten my own
locs and visit consultant every couple of months. I am not
good at putting in the new hairs in the correct lock to
preserve the parting patterns. Also, I want a consultant
to inspect each lock for anything funny -- like a piece of
lint.

You are right. It looked better the next day. I guess that I had forgotten
how it was with rollers. I wore a wrap when I had relaxed hair and rarely
wet set my hair. Most of the time I used the curling iron.
I like the fuzziness too but hoping that it won't be a big fuzzy mess one day.

Retightening

2006-12-02 13:38:17

I just came from my second retightening. It's been 5 weeks since my last
one. I've decided that 5 weeks will be my schedule. Six weeks if I push it.
I don't want to go past 6 weeks, though.
I've noticed that after 4 weeks the locks really start to grab each other a
lot, and I have to separate them every day.
Everettes is having a retightening class in February, and I plan to take
it. It will be just past my six months mark.
Have I mentioned lately how much I love Sisterlocks?

Re: [LockItUp] Roller Sets

2006-12-02 10:02:00

I have the same thing when I use rollers, but I find that the parts fill in
as the day goes on. The tight curls fall out a bit and the parts are less
noticeable. I always had this part problem after rolling when I had the
perm, too, so I don't give it a second thought.
I think as our hair gets longer, these "roller parts" become a non-issue, too.
I've seen others talk about the fuzziness. I don't know whether I'm not
having this problem or if I do have the problem and it just doesn't bother
me. I'll take a closer look the next time I wash my hair. Maybe I do have
the fuzziness but I like it. Anything that's not super-straight looks good
to me nowadays. :-)

Roller Sets

2006-12-01 22:10:25

I washed my hair tonight. I braided it and banded it as instructed. When I
set it I took the bands out, left it braided and set with perm rods. I
thought that I would have wavy and curly hair and I do but it seems that the
parts are back. I am going into my 4th week and the parts were filling in
nicely. After taking the rollers out I cannot seem to blend the hair
together. It stays separate like it was on the rollers so once again I have
all of this scalp showing. What would be the remedy? More rollers with less
locks on each? Or visa versa? Maybe this is how it will be until it thickens
and the parts fill in completely. What was said about the fuzziness? I
notice that my hair is fuzzier with each washing.
I went for my first tightening the other day and I found out that my locks
are medium. I was surprised because they seem pretty small but I guess that
that is the difference with Sisterlocks.

Re: [LockItUp] A Brand New Question

2006-12-01 18:42:10

Well the twists didn't work for me. I just don't know how to do them. The
two that I did yesterday came aloose rather quickly. I guess I need
someone else to do them for me, and I don't have time to find someone
before the graduation.
So I'll pull out my Caruso hairsetter. Maybe I'll try the flat twists
another time.

Phytospecific Moisturising Balm

Has anyone ever heard of or used this product? I heard it was
supposed
to significantly reduce frizz. It is a line of products by Phytologie
made for black hair.

Re: A Brand New Question

heard before.
You're right. I've never heard that one before. However, I got right
up
after reading your post and went to a mirror to flat twist my hair. I
did three of them, going from my forehead back to the top of my head.
I
put on a rubber band to hold them. I like it. I think it will work
for
you because the flat twists will show your hair line and your new
growth (all natural hair). Parts aren't a problem because everyone's
parts show when wearing flat twists. You can put the ends in nubian
knots to hide much of the perm. Try it before Sunday to get a feel
for
it. Then of course you'll have to post a picture. :)
