Re: [LockItUp] Digest Number 88

I am hoping that my hubby will feel that way about my locks. Right now he
just says that they look nice. When I wore a short fro he complemented me
every single day on how nice my hair looked. He corrected a neighbor when
she said that she was surprised that I cut my hair so short because men like
to run their fingers through their woman's hair. He told her that could
still so that. So I got tired of the short fro and permed my hair and I
rarely heard another complement after that from him. He has been begging me
to cut it short again. I gave up trying to explain that as a woman I missed
having hair. So I am hoping when my locks mature and grow that he will like
my hair as much as he did with the short afro. Then we both can be happy.

I haven't read my signed copy yet but plan to as soon as I
get more time. Nina is AKA and I'm glad she has locs. She
might help change some attitudes among her sorors. She
came across very personable when she was in Denver too.

I have pictures and will be posting a new page on my web site

Hair ..... free to be me...

2006-10-30 22:35:41

Hello Friends.
I just loved Helena's post saying how her "hubby" just loves her
hair.
Helena said:
<<<< My husband loves to run his

WOW that took me to a different level with this natural hair
thing. I don't have a mate now .... but when I do ... Man that
just made me think. :-)
Come on GURLS ... I know you can relate to being in those
private moments and being distaracted by wondering .. what you
hair is doing. More importantly wondering WHERE?? it was ..
(for those of us who wore ADD-ON hair). LOL
What a freedom .... no place would be off limits ... shower ...
hot tub..... No worries about him running his fingers thru your
natural HAIR. NO hair tracks to bump over. No lost braids...!!
I'm liking this ..... Something to look forward to.
Things that make you go Hmmmmmm.
Thanks for that point of view. Now I NEED to get back to
work....

Dippin' My Spoon

2006-10-30 19:47:36

I just got back from having my book "Dippin' My Spoon" signed by the
author and Sisterlock Sister Nina Foxx. She is very nice. I didn't
get a chance to talk to her much because she was busy signing and
telling people about her book but I had to ask her if she was the
main character in her book. Nina said no, but should I believe that?
(LOL) Just kidding Nina! Well, the book is juicy and it has a
little about the dynamics behind freindships and why we have certain
so-called freinds along with male troubles. That is all I am going
to say so I don't give anything away. If I remember correctly there
will be a sequel. The book is available at Amazon.com or check your
local book store. (Black book store if possible)

Hair Ornament?

2006-10-30 02:58:08

I ordered a hair ornament from New Bein. It arrived yesterday. I can't
figure out how to attached it to my teensy weensy skinny mostly-permed
locks.
Suggestions?

Greetings to all and God's blessings to you! :-))
I am Helena from Berlin, MD, from the part of Maryland that is closest to the
Atlantic Ocean, about 15 minutes away (depending on the traffic!) from Ocean
City, MD.
I am one of the new ones and have been enjoying reading all of the e-mails
from so many. How interesting and inspiring! It's like opening a regular
mailbox each day and out comes lots of goodies! :-))
I am growing cultivated locs which I started and am maintaining myself. I
will be completing my third month shortly. Previously I wore braids
(synthetic) for almost
two years to get my hair back in shape. Wearing braids helped tremendously.
However, I began to notice some minor breakage in different places. Out they
came! Plus, I had been considering locs awhile. I took the plunge. I have
never looked back. Prior to the two years, my hair had started breaking of
from relaxers and mild pressing. I think stress and medication had something
to do with the breakage. Anyway, my hair is long since completely natural.
My locs are forming, slowly but surely. Of course, I am still in the baby
locs stage. My hair is so much stronger and healthier with a life, beauty,
and richness all their own. I truly have my own kind of "good hair."
Naturally, I have had my detractors; but they do not matter. To those who
support me,
I say, "right on!" Any number of people have given me compliments--some to
the point
where they have asked if I would do their hair. I've politely refused. I
had to self-educate myself these last few months about my current hair
transition. I knew almost
nil before. I've done quite a bit of research. The hard work is paying off.
By the way,
I started my youngest daughter's first. She is 16. Carole was also an
inspiration.
My husband and other two daughters love my hair. My husband loves to run his
hands over my head. Partly sensual for him. lol
Well, I believe this missive is long enough for now. Let it suffice for now
to say that I am ever learning, ever researching. I am open to new ideas and
knowledge from
anyone. I am always a student.

I don't want to interfere with your plans for the cruise, but I would like to

also giving a President's Day 3 night winter comedy cruise Feb. 16-19, 2001
that
you might also consider. The 16th fare is free, something that could make

You can order on line, by phone, and maybe by mail. There's also a page on

Re: [LockItUp] Digest Number 85

2006-10-26 19:01:48

When I got up today I was thinking, OK what will my hair look like today. I
am thinking I will probably have to curl it or something. I stood before the
mirror and took off the Maverick scarf. My hair just kind of fell into
place. It is still curly so I don't have to do anything to it. I am not
doing an infomercial for the company nor do own any of their stock but, those
are nice scarfs. Like I said before I have a large head and scarves usually
slip off or give me a headache if I put them on tightly or wear one with
elastic. This one has elastic but it does not bother me at all.
I know that when I wash my hair I have to use the bands and all but what
about swimming? Part of the reason that I went natural is so I could become
more active. I was an avid swimmer years ago and want to get back to that.
Serious swimmers know that the swimming caps don't keep your hair dry. They
don't work if your head submerges the water. I know there is a dialogue on
AOL natural hair folder about exercising with natural hair but I think the
situation with the Sisterlocks and part permed hair is different. Should I
wait until my locks are more settled or actually locked before I start
swimming several times a week?

NOT include airfare. You can talk with Shirley about airfare because it is
available, however it may be cheaper to book it on your own.
Below is the info on the cost of the rooms, however this information will
also be found in the file posted in eGroups.
COST:

Re: Dry Scalp Question

2006-10-25 15:13:32

I'm in Colorado and we KNOW dryness out here. I also
was the Dandruff Queen most of my life -- even 6 months
after getting Sisterlocks. One Sisterlocks consultant
said that I must get it under control and offered
NOFLAKES, a natural dandruff shampoo. It helped a
little bit. What worked for me was an almost FREE remedy
from one of Pam Ferrell's books:
3 ounces of apple cider vinegar
1 quart of distilled water
1 teaspoon of sage oil
Use weekly after shampoo as a final rinse
(do not wash/rinse out)
That's it! After using it weekly for about 3 months, the
dandruff stopped and I don't even have an itchy scalp unless
I don't shampoo for over 10 days. It has done nice things
for my locs too. My hair which is usually extremely
soft, feel a little more substantial -- they are still soft
but they are less like cotton. I hear that it does the
opposite for people with hard locs. They say that their locs
feel softer.
The sage oil seems to cut the "vinegar" smell making it very
pleasant. I've totally hooked on this rinse, ladies.
I've skipped using it a time or two and the dandruff has not
returned -- just a couple of flakes.
Try it weekky for a month or two and let me know what you
think.

Well,
I finally went to visit a loctician today. In fact, I need to give ya'll
her info. to add her to the consultants list. Anyway, she was retightening
someone's hair who has mini-sisterlocks, they were nice & she had a nice
color on them. I also watched Dr. Cornwell's video & she answered my
question. The only concern I have is about my dry scalp. I usually have to
oil my scalp about 3 times a week b/c of my dandruff & itchy scalp. When I
voiced this concern, she suggested that I could use Seabreeze or Witch Hazel.
Now, I have used Seabreeze to clean my scalp, when I have braids, but as a
substitute for dry scalp, I don't think so!!! Can someone please shed some
light on this subject for me??

Hello Sista's!
I'm back from ATL with my half locked, half permed head! :
At first, I didn't know how to react. My first thought was, "OH MY
GOD....WHAT DID I DO"??? Then then after about three seconds, I
couldn't stop smilin! LOL LOL The dreaded three seconds were for the
permed ends still left on my head NOT the decision to get my
SL'S! I have about 4-5 in in SL's and about 5-6 in. in permed ends.
And I could just KICK myself for not cutting those ends OFF.
But....my consultant did leave the decision up to me, but advised
against cutting the ends off (right now/before I got my SL'S). She
said my hair was a nice lenght and very full and gave me tips with
what can be done with the permed ends. I'm still not feeling the
permed ends though! But, I'll just wait it out and see how my locks
develop over time. I'm not the most patient sista, so if I start
crying again...somebody please bring me back down to this place we
call earth! I can take it! LOL Thank you all for your support and
advice. These past two weeks have been heck for me and my family. I
just found out at age 35 that I was adopted and that my birth mother
is actually a person that I'd thought of as a first cousin of mine.
And we have yet to speak to each other regarding this. (her doing,
not mine) I haven't always posted alot here, but I read this board
daily and even though this board is about SL's, I felt comfortable
about talking about this here (hope you don't mind), because I really
feel as though we are all sister's in the most spiritual since of the
term. And other than my husband...I don't many places/people where I
can turn to for advice, support, and some good ole sista talk! Don't
feel sorry for me Sista's...just continue to BE THERE! I KNOW I'm
blessed! As for my Birth Mother...well....if she doesn't come
around, she can just go on wit her permed self! I'm happy to be half
way nappy! :
soon as I can get my hubby to turn off the GAME! :
Peace N' Everlasting Blessing~

Re: [LockItUp] Digest Number 82

I decided to try curling my hair. I took my old 1/4 inch curling iron and
curled the relaxed ends. I am very happy with the results. It looks very
cute I think. I have my skinny squiggly locks with the ends curled under. I
did not touch the the locks that are all natural. They are in the back
mostly and are already curly. When I wore a relaxer I used to taper or shave
the back so when I started growing out of the relaxer the back grew in
totally natural. It is my favorite part. I look forward to my hair growing
and thickening and eventually cutting all of the relaxer off.
I was self conscious about all of the parts and scalp showing because I have
a very large head. I am getting used to it and really it is only the top and
a little on the left side that shows a lot of scalp. I think that I will try
the small rods next because I really want to get away from using heat on my
hair.
The thing that I love is that I did not use oil and my hair is not dull at
all. It actually has a nice sheen.

No Lye

2006-10-21 19:42:53

I read Tulani Kinard's book NO Lye about 2 years ago. I admired all of the
nice styles in the book including the sisterlocks . About a year or so ago I
saw Tulani Kinard on Oprah and she was almost bald. I was kind of surprised
about that. She was on the show with Iyanla Vanzant. She is also featured
on Iyanla's CD,In the Meantime.
I think that I am going to try to roll my hair because though the locks are
wavy and curly the relaxed ends are straight. It seem like something needs
to be done with them. I looked for the sponge rollers with the covering
someone mentioned. The Walmart in my area did not have them. Maybe I should
just turn the ends under because the rest of my hair doesn't really need to
be set.

No , I only use it on my face and body I have it in bar form. I saw some at
Sheilas in a little jar and she said you add water to it.
I have the shea butter too but have only used it on my feet and legs. I am
diabetic and it has really helped my dry skin problems there.
I will have to start using it as a facial moisturizer. I have used Nature's
Blessings on my face and chapped lips.
Again, thanks for the gheri curl info. I will have to order that book No Lye

Re: [LockItUp] Digest Number 81

2006-10-21 13:43:06

Well, I had my locks put in on Saturday. I was supposed to have them done on
Friday and Sunday but due to a last minute scheduling snafu we did the whole
thing on Saturday. So, you can understand why I was not interested in my
consultant styling my hair when we were done.
I am reading all about your styling tips but I still don't know what I
should do. Each time I washed my hair while I was growing out of the relaxer
the permed ends would knot up so there was a lot of breakage. Also, the
consultant did some cutting of the ragged ends. Therefore my hair is much
shorter that I thought that it would be. I have 400 and something tiny
squiggly locks that kind of lay on my head. They are so short, tight and
squiggly that I don't know if I should try to curl them. They seem like they
might have a mind of their own and I don't know what curling would do.
It has only been a day but so far I just wear them kind of like a short wrap
style where the locks just lay on my scalp. When I came home and showed my
husband I started to explain how I could curl them and such and he said "it
looks fine just like it is, you don't need to do anything. Now, How about
that?!
I really like my locks but I am not too thrilled with all of the scalp
showing. I had to remind myself that years ago when I would get a jeri curl
it would be the same way. Parts showing all over looking like bald spots for
days. Even when getting a relaxer touch up my hair would be so straight and
thin at first that it would not curl or anything until the first wash. So, I
can deal with this and the good thing is that its natural now.
My consultant wants me to come back in 2 weeks. I am not so sure about that
because I am really looking forward to the locks thickening and the parts
going away. If she tightens in 2 weeks I think that I will still have the
tight locks with all of the parts showing. Did any of you have short locks
at first? How did you style them? Sorry for the length of this post but I
find this forum to be so helpful and motivating.

Undoubtedly the reason for all the damage/breakage I had in the front which
makes me somewhat unhappy with the way my sisterlocks look in that area.
After months of being totally natural but not knowing what to do with my
hair, I opted for the curl (AGAIN) thinking it would be less harmful than a
regular relaxer. It proved to be the worse decision I could have made.
Somewhere I read about Sisterlocks, searched the web, found Michelle's site,
called the Home Office, and decided to go for it sight unseen!
Wish I had known prior to going back to that chemical what I know now.
That's water under the bridge. I am on my way to ME!

Gheri Curl Info

2006-10-20 12:33:51

I found it. The info wasn't on the web. It's from Tulani Kinard's book
"No Lye".
Btw, I stopped getting the gheri curl after about a year cuz I couldn't
stand that gheri curl juice dripping all over everything. My pillowcases
were a mess, my telephone at work was horrible, and the neckline of
everything I owned looked nasty. After reading this, I now know why.
First I'll just paraphrase what came before this in the book by saying
perms and curls both work by drying the hair and scalp. That's why we've
all had to grease our scalps and constantly use some kind of moisturizers
-- a lot -- when we use chemicals on our hair.
Here's the part about the gheri curls and moisture:

Although I love the Caruso, personally I get a more lasting curl when I wet
set my hair using the Hair Twirlers. On Thursday morning I washed my hair,
immediately rolled it and let it dry. Last night (Saturday) I lightly oiled
my scalp with Nature's Blessings, went to bed with my satin scarf and have
received compliments all day about my beautiful curls. I don't anticipate
having to do anything to it for church in the morning.
I will try to remember to let you know exactly how long these curls last.

A Hair Question

2006-10-19 18:20:34

I keep hearing that the curls from the Caruso hairsetter last a long time
-- 3 to 5 days or so depending on the curl.
My question: What about sleeping on it? In the past, no matter what kind
of curl I had in my hair (whether it's full-body waves or sho' nuff curls),
once I slept on it (with or without a scarf), the style was "greatly"
diminished. If I slept with a scarf, the curls were flattened out. If I
didn't use a scarf, the hair would go every which way.
Does Caruso hold better after sleeping?

Caruso - YEAH!!!

2006-10-19 14:43:38

I broke down and bought the newer version at Target. If I win the one on
eBay, my daughter says she wants it.
I just tried the steamer a few minutes ago. While I didn't like the way it
did my permed hair a couple of years ago, I gotta say I LOVE what it does
for my half Sisterlocks/half permed hair!!!
I love the soft curls I got. And the frizzy permed tips are great for the
locked look, whereas it wasn't good at all when I had a perm. I hope I'm
explaining this right. Feel free to ask questions. :-)
Anyway, I used the large and X-large rollers for most of my hair, and
two smaller ones only on the sides just above my ears. My hair is short
there. Because of the large rollers I got more body than curl. It was
exactly what I wanted! The ends are sort of turned under rather than
actually curled, if that makes sense to you. The sides where I used the
small rollers are more curled, but that's perfect for that area.
I didn't have to put any rollers in the lower back because using the
Maverickwear satin scarf every night keeps that part turned under nicely
without actually using rollers.
The hairsetter worked exactly as advertised. Very easy. Very quick. From
the minute I plugged it in to the minute I took out the last roller took no
more than 30 minutes altogether. I love this thing! Can't wait till I no
longer have any permed hair and see how it works for me then.

-Sandy,
Sounds good. The MacFrugals in my area has Caruso on sale for
$14.99. When I get off work I will have to purchase one. Does is make
your locks look frizzy? My wayward hair is starting to frizz, just as
it used to do when I coiled my hair. Do any of you know why it would
do that? I wear a satin bonnet every night and yet it still frizzes.
Do you think the Caruso would capture and streamline some of the
frizz?

inches of new growth and about 3 inches of permed ends. I recently noticed 2
areas where the permed ends have completely broken off leaving what appears

What might cause the permed ends to break off at the new growth after having

BlowOut?

2006-10-16 23:36:17

I have one lock that won't stay locked. It's in my kitchen, it's very
short, all virgin hair, but for some reason this teeny patch of hair isn't
nappy like the rest of my kitchen. I don't knokw why. I guess I got some
strange hair! LOL!
Anyway... this one keeps coming aloose. The other little locks back there
are doing just fine, but I've had this one redone twice; and now I just
braided the little thing and I'll have it relocked when I go back for
another retightening.
Anyone have any ideas why I might be having this problem?

Carol's Sisterlocks (was Digest Number 78)

I will be going for 5 hours tomorrow and 5 on Sunday.<<
Congrats, Carol! Tell us more. How much natural hair
are you locking? Do you have permed hair? If so, does
your consultant plan to lock it too?
You will love your Sisterlocks -- it is the best hair
decision I've made besides no longer perming.

Re: [LockItUp] Digest Number 78

2006-10-16 13:57:37

Tomorrow I am going for my sisterlocks! I am very excited. Did any of you
feel pain while getting your locks? The back of my head (the kitchens) are
sensitive. I noticed that it hurt quite a lot when I got test locks in that
area. That area hurts when I get braids also. The rest of my scalp is
pretty tough. At least I hope it will be. I don't want to sit through 10
hours of pain. I know that I will have to tell the consultant about the pain
but I want her to be able to do her job correctly. I am just one of those
very tender headed people.
I have been looking for Braids and Beauty. I think they publish an issue 4
times a year. I am glad to know that it is finally coming out.
I have seen Sisterlocks in Essence, Let's Talk Hair by Pamela Ferrell and No
Lye by Tulani Kunard. That is how I heard about them at first.

From Anessa Harris:
Hello Happy, Nappy Ones:
I am holding out until Monday (September 18th) before I contact the travel
agent with a headcount for the cruise. THIS IS TO GIVE EVERYONE A LITTLE
MORE TIME TO NETWORK THE CRUISE INFORMATION. Once I get the rest of the
responses from you all, I will be adding some rooms to the count and
allowing the travel agent to go ahead and reserve those spots. This means
I need your responses back by Sunday night. Send your responses to
ajohnson@....
Reminder-I mentioned before, the sooner you send in your $100 (per person)
deposit in, that will reserve your room/spot at the prices quoted. As long
as there is availability, the prices will still be granted to those who
miss the 3 week time frame that we get to turn in the deposit. If
availability is not there, the prices will change (increase).
I will post by Tuesday, September 19st, an information form that needs to
be filled out and sent in with your deposit. I will also include the
travel agents name and address. Once you send your deposit, you will be
able to contact her directly if you have to.

I wanted to thank everyone for their congrats and advice.
I just wanted to say that I love my new "do" even though it is
different than what I expected.
Is it supposed to be locked all the way down to the end?
I have gotten a lot of advice to set it on rollers but the thing is my
hair is curly already. Will setting it make it more of a structured
curl instead of the loose natural ones I have already?
My ends are fuzzy, curly and the sisterlocked section is curly too.
My consultant says I have a tight curl pattern. But my hair is longer
than what I thought as it is hanging now and it didn't before.
Again, I am confused as this all seems so contradictory to everyone
else's experience. My consultant says I should stop worrying and just
be happy that I am one of the lucky ones who don't need to roll their
hair. So i will just try and enjoy the journey. I don't want to
manipulate my hair too much, so as I said I just mist and go.

question.

Give it time. Your hair will continue to change and you will eventually
have the look you want.
The reaction is normal for your hair. Everyone's hair is different and has
its own mind.
To upload pictures, go to http://www.egroups.com/group/lockitup
Sign in with your email address and password
Click on "Files"
Click on the link that says "create folder". Then create a folder with
your name or something that will tell us that they are your pictures.

Looking for Carusos or the Like

2006-10-11 17:03:54

I need a new set of Carusos -- I threw my ancient
set out right after getting locs because I didn't know
that I could use them. If anyone knows of a good set
obtainable online, please let me know (it is hard to
find time to get to Walmart). Are there different
models? If so which is the preferred one?
Lately, I've been sleeping with 6-7 rubber rollers at the
very top of my head and 5 twists around the side and back.
I can't sleep ON rollers anymore. That set lasts for 3
days or so. It lasts longer when I let the daily shower
steam get in the locs. I don't have to set my locs
more than twice a week this way.
More curling tips would be appreciated, y'all. I've
practically thrown out the curling wand though cuz I'm
avoiding dry heat.

Re: Finally, Sisterlocks of my very own.

2006-10-11 14:03:29

I put aloe vera on my ends as suggested? If someone will
tell me how to download pictures again I will happily put
some online this week. I just want to know, is this normal,
or do I have crazy hair?<<
CONGRATS!!!
You have normal hair, sister-girl, and it is doing what
comes natural for supercurly hair. When you wash it, it
may shrink up and after a few days without water, it
may drop and hang straighter. You can use aloe vera
if you want.
When you want to look "refined", just use some perm or
rubber rods. You can put on the perm rods 10-15 minutes
as soon as you wake up. Use a little spray bottle with
water. (I use rose water or orange blossom water from
the Middle-East ethnic grocery store.) By the time you
finish with your shower and dressing (20-30 minutes),
your hair will be curly. Finger style and go! The curl
will last for days. (Just cover your hair at night.)
You don't want to do too much manipulating (rolling
and styling) in the early stages -- just let your hair
do what comes natural as much as you can.
Eventually the locking process will cause it to swell
up (phoof up) and then condense. At that time, it will
not shrink or curl up as much when wet. You'll have
that "refined look" without rolling it up. That is when
you are truly "locked".

Finally, Sisterlocks of my very own.

2006-10-11 06:42:31

I just got my Sisterlocks yesterday. I am soooo excited. My
experience
though was a little bit different it seems. My hair is all natural so
after getting my sisterlocks my hair was just curly all over. I guess
this is a good thing but my ends are a bit frizzy and puffy. It looks
cute but I was interested in more of a refined, cultured look. I know
I must have patience. Today I just misted my hair and went. As soo as
the water hit it, it started to curl. Should I put aloe vera on my
ends as suggested? If someone will tell me how to download pictures
again I will happily put some online this week. I just want to know,
is this normal, or do I have crazy hair?

ANHA Cruise 2001

2006-10-10 05:01:46

The following is being posted to let as many happy nappy-heads know about
an upcoming cruise!
From Anesa Harris (ajohnson@...) by permission:
"I have spoken with Mosetta (founder of A Nappy Happy Affair [ANHA]), and
here is what I have come up with for the Nappy Hair Affair Cruise
2001. Let me start by letting you all know that I worked with trying to
keep the cruise down to 4 days and something that we all could afford as
well as enjoy. I did the best I could to keep the prices affordable and I
do hope you all are as excited as I am about this event.
"I need to know how many people are interested in going and I need to know
no later than Tuesday, September 12th so that the travel agent can book the
cruise at the quoted prices. I will let the travel agent know
approximately how many rooms to block off once I get responses from
you. We will then have approximately 3 weeks to get a $100 deposit per
person to the travel agent to hold your cabin. As time passes, the prices
may increase depending on availability so a deposit will secure your spot
at the quoted prices. After Tuesday, I will have available a form posted
on the ANHA site (http://www.nappyhairaffair.com) that you will have to
print, fill out, and send to the travel agent along with your deposits. I
will also provide other information via regular e-mail postings as soon as
we book. Once you begin paying your money, you can address all questions
directly to the travel agent. Her information will be on the form that
needs to be sent to her and I will also post it with other information.
I will begin to work on an itinerary for ANHA so that we can do some things
together while we are on the cruise. I will be responsible for setting up
a mixer after dinner on our first night aboard. A "Hair Day" (check out
the ANHA site if you don't know what a "Hair Day" is) will also be a good
idea for Thursday because we will be at sea for the entire day. We can
meet on the Lido Deck and have a ball! I will be asking for input from all
of you to help me plan a little something for the rest of the days so
please put your thinking caps on!
LEAVE FROM: Miami, Florida on Monday, October 15th
ITINERARY:
Monday - Set Sail
Tuesday (8 am - 2 pm) - Key West, Florida
Wednesday (1:30 pm - 10:00 pm) - Cozamel, Mexico
Thursday - A Day at Sea
Friday - Return to Miami, Florida
COST:
2 People to a Room:
Cat. 4B (inside cabin - no window): $479 each
Cat. 6B (outside cabin - window): $539 each
(Both of these are located on the Main Deck)
3 People to a Room:
Cat. 4B: $409 each
Cat. 6B: $449 each
4 People to a Room:
Cat. 4B: $374 each

interest. Let me know how many people you think will plan on joining you
as well.

Re: Sisterlocks Consultants

2006-10-09 01:12:27

I think this is a good idea with the LONG caveat. You might
want to avoid the word "recommendation" all together.
Frankly, I think this list should be provided on the web by
the Sisterlocks Home Office. It can be a simple text file
that they update regularly. It would avoid a lot of long
distance calls. It doesn't even need HTML tags!
Name City State Phone# Type Notes
Type: Consultant, Certified, R-Certificatin, Training
Associate Master Trainer
Notes: cosmetologist, specialization, # of years
as a consultant, etc.
OK, I'll stop complaining. I know Joanne is becoming
internet knowledgeable -- albeit very very slowly.

Re: [LockItUp] Sisterlocks Consultants

Sandy,
Good idea...but be sure to say something in the document that it
is a reccommendation only. It is the customer's responsiblity
to check with the home office concerning the status of the
individual. This does not mean ceritified vs not... but whether
or not they are still in good standing. Their are previous
consultants out their who are doing Sisterlocks but have had
issues with the home office. I know the gruop is a open forum
but we still have to be aware of what is going on.
This of course would go for me also once I start taking clients.
In other words ...CYA....
Take care

Sisterlocks Consultants

2006-10-08 02:00:33

I was thinking that it might be a good idea to pull together all of the
consultant info that we have so far (names, locations, email addresses
and/or phone numbers) and put them in a text file in the LockItUp site on
eGroups so people can refer to it.
Pulling the info together will be a job at first; but once I've got the
initial start, updating the info would be easy.
Whaddy think of this idea?

I am not thinking about doing that(twisting my hair). I was just wondering
if it is maintained the same way after all of the hair is locked. I
remembering reading a post where someone said that sisterlocks are just like
traditional once the hair is locked so, I wondered if the maintainence is the
same. I was thinking about one day taking the retightening course. If I
have to one day stop retightening and start twisting then maybe I won't take
the course. Well now that my question has been answered I will still
consider taking that course.

HI,
Angel thanks for the info. I actually have several of the books you
mentioned No LYe by Tulani Kinard and Let's Talk hair by Pam
Ferrell.I'm going to look through them again.
I have question for you and the group ( I actually posted this
question on the other board also). I have what my consultant calls
short curl pattern hair-very nappy, in other words. In some ways it
is a blessing-my hair is locking pretty well only 3 months after the
sisterlocks were put in(it might have been sooner, but I messed up and
used some non-sisterlocks products that caused some slippage 1 month
into the process). However, my hair is very dry and fragile-I have
started to notice some breakage.I have learned that breakage is
common with this type of hair. Before my hair was locked I used heavy
conditioners like phytobaum, but I am concerned that I can't do this
at this point in my locking process. I use the moisture treatment
after I shampoo and nearly every day as a leave in conditioner after
I shower. I'm not sure what to do at this point; I don't want to
retard the locking process.-

Hello Carol!
Sisterlocks are maintained using the Sisterlocks patented
process. You can start twisting your locs but you will no
longer have Sisterlocks.
Why are you thinking about doing that anyway?

Re: [LockItUp] Digest Number 71

2006-10-06 03:13:05

Most of my hair on top is relaxed. I think that all of the relaxed hair on
the sides has broken off. The back is all natural because I used to wear it
tapered or shaved when I was relaxing my hair.
I wonder, after you keep getting your hair tightened until it is completely
locked, do you still get it tightened?or Do you start twisting like the
traditonal locks get twisted?

Carol's message made me think about something. I've mentioned it before,
but I copied the idea from seeing Pat Hunley's site. I followed her
journey like a tracking hound dog. LOL! It was her site, more than
anything else, that helped me decide to get Sisterlocks. I'm hoping my
site can help others in the same way.
My hair is longer, but mostly permed. Pat's hair is shorter, but all
natural. Between the two sites and seeing the pictures of how our
different hair is responding to Sisterlocks, I think it can help even more
people get a better picture of how Sisterlocks might work for them.
At least I hope so anyway. I'm having fun with the site, and I guess
that's what's important.

I went to the African Arts festival here in Chicago yesterday. I have never
seen so many locked heads in one place. It seems like every other person was
locked. Sisterlocks has a booth there. My consultant was there so I was able

outing. It will be going on for the entire Labor Day weekend.

Hotep Angel,
Your post has prompted me to come out of the lurking mode where
I've been for a week or so. I met you at the Sisterlocks Homecoming
as we were leaving...remember? You showed me where to validate my
parking. I wrote down your e-mail address and then lost it. How are
you? I thoroughly enjoyed the Homecoming and all of the sisterhood
and activities surrounding it. I'm looking forward to meeting all of
you other ladies in person next year.
Enjoy the Sesame Street stage with your children (you too, Kim).
It doesn't last long. I hardly ever watch TV. I have teenagers, and
I'm constantly fussing at them to turn off the dang BET and MTV. Some
of that stuff should be X-rated. The CD's are worse. It's a constant
battle in my house to monitor what they're watching and listening to.
At least I can maintain some control in my own house. Though my kids
are great, I really miss that baby stage.
Pat,
Your websites are fantastic! Asante sana for sharing them.
Kim,
Gurl, asante sana to you, too, for turning me on to this website.
I know I'm going to enjoy being a member. I recognize many of the
names from another site. By the way, are you ready for Tuesday? Lol.
I'm not.I was up at the job today, and will probably be there for at
least an hour tomorrow.
To All of the Rest of My Sistahs,
I'm looking forward to talking to all of you via this group. I
have a suggestion that all of us might be interested in. Do you think
we might be able to organize an online chat with Dr. JoAnne Cornwell?
I had the honor of sitting at her table at the Homecoming (because my
consultant is her personal assistant in the Home Office), but because
she was so busy, I didn't get a chance to talk to her much. She
didn't stay at the table for more than five minutes at a time. She
was quite warm and gracious. Anyway, if enough of you are interested,
I'll ask my consultant to ask JoAnne. Her schedule is SO hectic, what
with her teaching schedule at San Diego State and the Sisterlocks
business, maybe we shouldn't get our hopes up. I know nothing about
setting up an online chat, but so many of you seem to be savvy enough
to handle that part of it. Is anyone else interested?

I am happy I joined this group(I followed Pat from another hair group)
I have not had a perm in my hair for over a year and I cut off the
permed ends a month ago. I have been following Sisterlocks for
awhile now, and cannot wait until I get them. I visited a consultant
last month and she put sample locks in my hair. She charges $500.00
up to 4'. After 4' she charges $100.00 per inch(ouch). My hair is
already over 5' and by the time I get the money together I'll have to
start saving again for new growth(lol). But it is well worth the
money. I have spent enough money on perms, weaves, braids, haircare
products etc. I chose my consultant because she has years of
experience, she's certified, and she's a trainer also. She was also
recommened by JoAnne Cornwell. Again, I can't wait until I get my
Sisterlocks and sharing my story with everyone.
God Bless

a better understanding of the initial cost:
*-*-*-*-* START *-*-*-*-*
Sisterlocks comprises 3 sessions:
1. Prelocking session: Test locks are put in to determine
what locking pattern to use. There are a bunch of patterns
which are used for different hair types. I was taught 4
locking patterns when I took the retightening class but the
consultants learn a bunch more. They also do some counseling
on locs and your hair. In between you have to wait for at
least 1 week (I had to wait 2 weeks) so that you can wash
your locs and the loctician can see the effects on each
pattern. You'll be told not to use oily shampoos and
conditioners on the locs. This is the worse part of the
package because most of us want to get the locs right away
but you still have to wait. The locticians also KNOW that
you want locs because you've had more time to think. That
session is a non-refundable $25 that is included in the
quoted price (e.g. $350)
2. The Main Locking Session: The time it takes to do this
depends on the experience of the loctician and the length
of your hair. They choose a pattern based on the outcome
of #1. It took around 18 hours (2 days) for me. My sister
d
