Re: [LockItUp] Re:Hair oiling

Valerie,
I agree with you 100%! My dry hair definitely needs oil/moisture. I just
started using the Aveda Humectant--I'm in love! I keep going to the ladies
room to check out my locks. I can hardly believe how my hair now looks and
feels. The dryness is gone--even what's left of the chemically altered ends
are no longer dry. All this without any greasiness and without having to
use a lot of the product :-)
Sandy,
Congrats on the new you! You mentioned on your website your purchase of the
Sisterlocks moisture product. Will you list the ingredients here, please?
Thanks,
Sandust

When to Shampoo?

2006-08-31 01:13:47

I have a kinda stupid question. I forgot to ask my consultant how long I'm
supposed to wait before I wash my hair, and how often should I wash it?
I'm kinda impatient to wash it cuz the instructions in the starter kit say
that the parts fill in after 2 or 3 shampoos, and I want to hurry it along.

Go to http://www.sisterlocks.com. They have a page there which lists the
various cities where you can find a consultant. I was just reading it

Dear Sandy,
Congratulations to you on your Sisterlocks!!! I cannot thank you enough
for sharing your experience. It only gets better and that's the truth!! I
have been attempting to become a consultant ever since I've had my locks put
in. I now have to wait a few months since I am expecting. None the less, I
am truly encouraged by your enthusiasm for your consultants and it does help
that one of their names was Sheila. :-) Whenever I really get discouraged
or impatient all I have to do is go to your web page and just pretend that
it was me. Truly my day is coming. Not only that praise God for His Gospel
music!!! What a blessing!!! Once again thanks so much for sharing!!!!
God Bless,

I'm so happy for you, Sis! Believe all of us -- it will just
get better and better. If you are happy now, just wait until
this winter!
Ya know, some of those glamour shots in the Sisterlocks
books don't even take any work. Last night I put my locs in
a ponytail on the top of my crown. This AM, I and took them
down and shook. They look just like several pictures of the
ladies in the glamour book.
This is such fun -- I wish everyone could experience it.

Re:Hair oiling

2006-08-28 02:00:58

I don't think the no oil plan works anywhere that actually has more than one
season. I know that if I don't oil in the summer and winter in Texas, I will
have a mess on my hands. It doesn't take a lot, but it does take some oil. I
like using a light olive oil that I scent myself.

The Journey Begins

2006-08-27 15:32:26

Well today is my day! Yippeee!!!!!!!!!
Last night I did as my consultant told me. I washed it, conditioned it,
and let it dry naturally. No combing or brushing. Then I put the satin
scarf on it and went to bed. Yes the scarf was still on when I got up this
morning. <g
It's very soft, but it's also very dry. It really needs some kind of
moisturizer. I hope she puts something on it tonight. I just can't see me
living without putting *any* kind of moisturizer in this dry stuf.
My hair looks like an afro. Fuzzy/curly. I didn't know that permed hair
curled up like this when it dries naturally. I put a couple of combs in
the sides to hold it down. I look like scarey woman. :-) I'll take a
couple of pictures so you can see this weird hairdo.
I plan to leave work as early as I can to get started on my journey. Send
some hair vibes through cyberspace for me. I'm feeling kinda nervous and I
don't know why. I have absolutely no doubts about doing this. I've felt a
sense of freedom ever since I made the decision, so I don't know why I'd be
feeling nervous about it today.

Sho you right! I'm waiting for the technology everywhere so
we can watch you in the shop from our workstations' camera!

too. When I get the urge to grab some scissors and whack it
all of cuz it's not growing fast enough to suit me (3 inches
overnight would do it <g
fast enough, you'll stop me. Won't you? Won't you?!!! <<
DEFINITELY!!! The good thing is that you KNOW what to expect
and are preparing yourself for it. You also you KNOW that in
6 months you will look FABULOUS. You'll have those 3+ inches
and the scalp will be all filled in and your locs will phoof
up. The snows in Michigan will be your friend because it will
only make your locs prettier.
Last year, A friend/colleague watched Paleri & I get ours and
considered them. She was talked out of it by her other
friend who is a traditional beautician. She proceeded to get
her hair lyed/fried/dyed and turned almost 10 inches of a
NATURAL mane to 2-5 inches of damaged hair. I know she is
regretting her decision now.
Her "friend" only had had one good point -- how can she
NOT put any oils on her hair? She was right about that
and we've learned that we have to break that rule in
Colorado. No oil is fine for humid areas. I was in New
Orleans a few months ago and then Richmond, VA and I
didn't need to add anything during those weeks.
However, we do need a little oil here. I mean a little:
1/2 T applied after washing once/week. I use a shea
butter & essential oil blend. If I had done that earlier,
my hair would be an average of 12 in. long instead of
8 in. My natural ends broke off significantly during the
dry winter.
I wish JoAnne would come out here for a week or two. She
would modify her rules a little.

Re: [LockItUp] Labor pains......

2006-08-26 23:29:02

ROFLMBO!
Not quite yet. We're gettin' there. Hee hee!
Tomorrow should be interesting. I have to wash and condition my hair, and
then put "absolutely nothing else" on it. I guess I'll just do a couple of
braids for work tomorrow. But when it starts flying up in spots because I
don't have any get on it, I'm sure I'll get some strange looks from
co-workers. But ask me if I care. LOL!
I know you're all gonna help me through this transition, too. When I get
the urge to grab some scissors and whack it all of cuz it's not growing
fast enough to suit me (3 inches overnight would do it <g

So Sandy .... any labor pains yet. Is it time?
You know all the "family" (LockItUp) members wanta be the first

Good thing we don't have unlimited means .. we would ALL be in
the delivery room (salon) with you... Ask Sigrid and Paleri
about when I got my Sisterlocks.
We will have to give your Locs a name...... You know they do
have a personality of their own don't you? Just like a child.
You will want them to go this way and ... they will do the
opposite. But even with that in mind you grow to love them
just the same.
I think Auntie Pat (me) should be the first to know in my
humble opinion of course No pressure at all.

Herbal Rinse - A Question

2006-08-26 09:06:14

I'm reading the instructions on the sample packet of herbal rinse. The
instructions say put 1 teaspoon of the herbs into a muslin strainer and
steep in a half cup (more water for longer hair) of hot water for 16 to 20
minutes until the water is lukewarm. Pour over the hair as a final rinse.
This seems like an awful small amount. 1/2 cup -- or even one whole cup --
isn't very much when you're trying to cover the entire head. My hair is
about 6 inches long. Whaddya think?

hey Sandy,
I am Carina. I had my hair braided for a minute. Now I am rocking
my two strand twists, and plan on braiding it again for the cruise
that I am going on in August. i will continue to get it twisted and
braided until next july when i will finally get my sister locks and I
can't wait. I am very excited about the whole process. i am just
waiting for this little bit of overly pressed hair to go a head and
grow out from when I had to train my hair for my best friend wedding
last year. it is almost there, but I want to make sure I lock it in
a virgin state for the most part. I have also decided to take a few
classes on hair and maybe go for my licence. I am not giving up my
major of Speech Pathology, but this will be something else I can have
under my belt, maybe do it on the week ends, ( mo money mo money,:-))

Sandy's New Sisterlocks

2006-08-24 18:38:34

Girl, I know you are on the edge here. Only 6 days left
before Sisterlocks! Get ready to throw away all of your
old hair STUFF. Get a BIG garbage bag to haul them away.
I had more STUFF: pressing combs, flat irons, little stove
(for comb), brushes, combs, pics, Wrap N Tap, Lustrasilk,
Cream of Nature... The list is almost endless. After 14
months, I went in a cabinet and threw away another bag of
STUFF. I gave away several full bottles of braid spray
(not good for locs) to my former braider to use on her
clients.
At a church service today some ladies who had not seen me
in years had mixed reactions. Some thought I had
extensions but others had heard of Sisterlocks and were
curious. My locs barely hit my shoulders after washing now
so I don't expect them to get too interested until they are
14 inches long - this time next year (Lord, willing).
I understand how they feel but I'm glad I didn't wait.
How are you holding up, Sis?

Then I'll give them a call. Thanks for letting me know this. I was going

Ya know, I never thought of wearing the scarves for anything other than
sleeping. I'm sure I couldn't do a headwrap to save my life
anyway. Thanks for the idea! I think I'll get the others too. A scarf
for every occasion! LOL!
Thank you! It's a labor of love, and a work in process. I'll be adding
her new line of hair care products soon.
I'll probably see you there then. We're starting on my hair Friday evening
when I get off work just to get a head start on it. I'll probably be there
for a good part of Saturday also. I'll be the one with the BIG grin on my
face and asking a *lot* of questions. :-)
Ya know what? I have no idea. When I made the appointment I didn't even
bother to ask. LOL! Both Sheila and Pam were standing there, and Pam was
closest to the appointment book, so she's the one who wrote it
down. But I've been there when both of them were working on one person in
order to cut the time. Maybe they'll do that with me. I don't know. It
probably depends on how busy they are at the time.

It is as pictured, except the purple is a more subdued color -- not so
bright. I like the subdued color better actually.
The Lucy scarf surprised me because it does look smaller than it looks in
the picture. However, it can hold a *full* head of hair. I think the
picture probably has hair inside the scarf, making it balloon out and look
larger. I think that's probably how it would look on you cuz you've got
lots of hair to put in it. :-) It has comfortable elastic across the
front, with adjustable tie strings in the back, so it's plenty roomy,
plenty tight, and plenty comfortable.

Relaxed Hair

2006-08-21 13:14:07

As many of you know, I have about 2 inches of new growth with about 3 - 4
inches of relaxed hair. Over the past few weeks I've read messages from a
couple of people who say that after awhile their relaxed hair starts to get
'sucked up' or sucked into the natural locks. I didn't really understand
what this meant, but now I do.
Yesterday I was feeling the test locks that were placed in my hair in May,
and I could feel a knot where the natural hair meets the permed hair, and
it does feel as if the permed hair is being pulled into the lock. This is
hard to explain, but maybe some of you have experienced this and can tell
me if it's a problem or if it's normal.
Btw, my test locks were locked from root to ends. She didn't leave the
permed hair hanging loose.

Sandy and Pat,
Thank you for your kind words. You mentioned putting up your hair when it
grows out. Start collecting Gooddy's fake tortoiseshell hair pins and
chignon pins. They are wonderful and won't harm your hair. I usually keep a
dozen or so around and buy more once a month. I have a bad :) habit of taken
my up do down in front of permies and putting it back up before they can
finish combing and brushing their straw.

Hi Lynda,
Which one did you purchace? I would like to get one as well but im
still one of those skeptics who dont care to purchase things online with
my credit card but, my sister lives in oakland and she can pick one up
for me :)

there somewhere. :-)

stores in my neighborhood where I can purchase them.

Sandy,
I can't keep a satin scarf on either, but look for a satin cap with
drawstrings at the beauty supply store. If they don't have a drawstring kind
where you are go for the elastic and I will look for the other kind here for
you.

Re: Ready for Sisterlocks!

2006-08-16 11:20:11

Girl, I know what you mean. Those 3 weeks between test locs
to the locking session seemed to last forever. I know you
are showing your friends your little test locs so they can
OOOH & AAHH. How many did you get and are all of them
holding up?
About the scarves -- you might have better luck with
Sisterlocks because your hair will not be as slick. How
large are your scarves and how do you put them on?
I have more success with large scarves tied in "1950 Aunt
Jemima style". I wrap from the back to front, tie ends once
it at the top, pull them around to the back, and tie the
ends in a bow (or knot) in the back. At the forehead, tuck
the loose part in.
I've been considering satin linen because I don't want sheet
lint in my locs. I only have pillowcases now and it doesn't
seem sufficient. (OK, I am being anal.)

To prevent the problem of a scarf, use a satin pillow case. It works great

Ready for Sisterlocks!

2006-08-15 07:30:46

Just let me ramble for a minute. Two more weeks and I can't stand it!
I bought two red flower barrettes to put in my hair for the wedding
yesterday. It worked out fine. I pulled my hair back into the bun and
covered it with the two barrettes.
I'm learning that our hair was not meant to be combed -- at least not
regularly. I've got about 2 inches of new growth, and just the thought of
combing it is painful. I have a plastic brush that works, though. I'll
just be glad when I don't have to do this anymore.
I'm noticing more and more women on tv with their hair locked. TV anchors,
actresses, etc. They look very nice, professional, etc. I'm starting to
wonder how the people on my job will react to my Sisterlocks. I'm sure
there won't be a problem, but the reactions -- from both black and white --
should be interesting.
Right now I'm using carrot oil on my hair daily to keep it moisturized so
it won't break off. I've been using this stuff for over a year, and I
really love it. It really does stop the breakage cuz this is the first
time since I was 14 (when I started getting perms) that my hair has been
long enough to cover my ears. Now that I'm just getting used to the
feeling of hair on my neck, I'm getting locks and will be cutting it in a
few months (to cut the perm off). But I know it'll grow back... longer and
healthier than ever.
I am so geeked about this! My daughter doesn't understand when I start
rambling about my new upcoming do, so I brought my ramble here cuz I know
you'll all understand.
A question about the satin scarves. Whenever I've used a satin scarf at
night it always came off. So I usually use cotton bandanas. Does anyone
have a tip for keeping the satin scarf on your head all night?

Combining Locks ... and other stuff to talk about...

2006-08-14 21:31:08

Hey All,
I'm finally back on line. I spent the last 5 days putting my
stuff in storage and cleaning a townhome. I got my Sisterlock
retighten right during the the midst of this (chaos). I must
give Grace my Sisterlock consultant KUDOs. I was behind
schedule and wanted to cancel my appointment. I was tired
sleeply, after be up for 20 some hours and dirty from cleaning.
Well she pampered me. My hair was dirty (which I never come to
an appointment with my hair that way). It probably smelled too
and so did I. She did not mind. She washed and then retighted
while I slept in the chair. She even feed me after I told her I
had not eaten because I was too busy. That's what we need from
one another .... support.
Thanks Grace..
They look wonderful and she too combined some of my smaller
locks. I had a few that were on the smaller "string-like" side
in appearance. I can hardly tell. I feel I will be happier in
the long run with the one's she combined. Especially as they get
longer.
I'm Soooo happy. I want my hair fresh for the Home coming. You
know we going to be playing in each other's heads. I can't wait
to take the class.
She did the sides front and back. We will get back together in
2 week to finsh before I leave. She going to be out of town.
She going to Hong Kong to do single braids on one of her
customers there. You go Grace!!!
Anyway I have a week of messages to catch up on and more updates
to do to the web page. Oh and Sandy your page is looking great
too. We're waiting for the arrival of your new "birth"
Sisterlocks that is . We don't want to start any rumors.... :-

Re: Color Rinse

2006-08-14 12:52:36

Color rinses are temporay color that gradually wash out. No
peroxide. The brand that I've used when my hair was relaxed was
Jazzin by Clariol. It is sold in beauty supply stores. My favorite
color was wine. The have about 15 different colors including clear
which makes your hair shiny. I haven't use it since going natural.
I don't have locs but I wear two stand twists. I don't know how it
would work for locs. All I know is that you have to rinse really
good. Once I didn't and I had the wine color all over my bed and
towels and clothes. It was a mess, but if you take the time to rinse
the color stays vibrant for about 3-4 weeks then fades. Good luck.
Oh,it costs about $6 hear in Pittsburgh. I have also used colored
pomade, but the consistency of it is like grease, but the colors are
great and it washed out in one wash. I use the gold, red or purple.
I put some on random twist and my husband likes it.

Sisterlocks

2006-08-13 20:43:08

Does any know where I can go to looking into Sisterlocks in
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania?

Re: [LockItUp] Yo Marion!

Sandy:
Thanks so very much for asking how "My Locks Look," I think they are pretty
cute and I am loving the look. Today, is my fourth day and I beginning to
see a 'LITTLE" less of my parts. I went from twist to Sisterlocks. The
response from people is "you have done something different, then say I like
this better than the other style"!! I am not afraid to exercise and sweat a
little. I took pictures, but I better not post them just yet, these were
close up shot. I WILL take more pictures this weekend and post them on the
site.

Combine Too Small Sisterlocks?

2006-08-13 11:36:12

I had medium locs in the back and small locks at the top
and front. I think I had 340 locs! I found them to be
too small for my taste and lifestyle so I am slowly having
them combined to form large and medium locs. My sister
has done quite a few now and they look pretty good now, IMO.
Does anyone have any experience or knowledge of this --
pros/cons? When is the best time to do it in the locking
process (early, late, doesn't matter)?

Re: Hair Coloring

2006-08-13 05:47:12

Tell us more about your color rinses -- we might want to try
them.
Within 6 months of getting locs, I called the Sisterlocks
Home office and they referred me to a Sisterlocks consultant
who is cosmetologist in Florida, Yvonne Mobley. Yvonne gave
me this information on the phone:
Coloring Tips:
1. Band ends
2. Use a natural, herbal (vegetable based) hair color. You can
usually buy some at a health food store. (e.g. Herbaltint in
a green box with white writing) It will be costly. You may
need 3-5 boxes so buy enough just in case. Do not use products
with peroxide. Coloring changes overall composition of hair.
3. Neutralize afterwards with the Sisterlocks Starter Shampoo.
The neutralizer that comes with the hair color is insufficient.
The Sisterlocks shampoo has more effective neutralizing
ingredients.
I changed my mind and didn't color my hair at that time. If I
were to color now I wouldn't band my ends but I would use the
starter shampoo and a vegetable-based hair color.
Note: Yvonne was very credible -- she bleached her own locs
platinum many years ago and they all fell out. Since that
time she dyes locs differently than non-locked hair.

Re: Hair Care from the Kitchen?

2006-08-12 20:28:38

Hey Anoni,
The shampoo is doing what it is supposed to do: make your hair
feel rough which is better for locking. I used that shampoo for
10 months because of my smooth, soft texture.
Having said that, I don't blame you for looking into other
products given your permed ends. Like Sandy, I'm saving
your recipes in case I decide to stop using or run out of
Dr. Bonners' shampoos. Like you, I wouldn't use any product
with mineral oil or petroleum.
I use a variation of your apple cider vinegar rinse. The
one that Pam Ferrell suggests with distilled water and a
little sage oil works great.
I also use a dab of "Natural Elegance Hair Food" (from a black
store in Denver). It has shea butter, aloe vera, caster oil,
grapefruit seed, jojoba oil, & peppermint. The 6 oz jar should
last for years because I apply it only after shampooing while
my locs are still wet. I store it in the refrigerator which
is in my kitchen. :-)
I'd caution against too much oils, manipulation, and anything
that might retard your locking. I didn't have permed ends but
have funny "Don King" hair that even after 14 months are not
locked on the ends. Therefore, I have similar concerns and
need to keep my natural ends well conditioned. You said that
after 7 months you are still not locked. That means that you
don't have the kind of hair that locks fast either. :-(
If I were you, I'd "hold the mayo" until I am at least
75% locked. :-O

I'm saving this message, Anoni. This sounds like something I could do. I

you try these? What specific benefits are they known for?

HELP!

2006-08-10 21:55:44

I just realized I have a wedding to go to this Saturday!
I have about 2 inches of nappy hair with about 3 inches of permed
hair. I've been wearing it in a bun for weeks, so it's sort of been
trained to be straight, no curl. This stuff won't hold a curl long enough
for me to get out the door!

Re:Moisturizing the hair

2006-08-09 20:00:39

I have been locked for 2 years now and just tried Carol's Daughter Healthy
Hair Butter and All Purpose Moisture Butter. I have put the Healthy Hair
Butter on my hair when it was dry and wet. Either way, it gave me incredible
suppleness and softness. I did notice that it was easier to separate my
locks after shampooing when I used it on my wet hair. I also used the All
Purpose Moisture Butter on my hair before swimming to protect it. It seemed
easier to wash the Chlorine out, but I have only used it once. I plan to
swim quite a bit, so there will be further testing. I will keep you posted.
Oils: I used to use Ginseng 8, but I had a problem with the scent.( I have a
lot of allergies.) I tried olive oil, but the scent of olives was way too
strong. I finally found a light Olive Oil that I like. The smell is not as
strong and easily covered with the essential oils that I mix for my personal
fragrance. I enjoy scenting my hair while adding some oil. I have very dry
skin, so I use the scented olive oil on my skin daily along with the All
Purpose moisture Butter on those tough areas, hands, feet, elbows and knees.
Lotion, even the "good" stuff left me ashy again in an hour or so.
Rambling on,

Re: A Consultation Question

2006-08-09 05:05:31

put the test locks in my hair. She locked the entire length of the
hair, and didn't leave the permed hair free. Is this the correct
procedure for test locks?
UNOFFICIAL COMMENT (remember, I am not a consultant and don't
plan to become one):
I've seen consultants lock the entire length. Some customers
insist on it because they feel that they can keep the permed
ends forever. A very few people can do that and if the locs
are very small, it may work out. Monica Geary, JoAnne's niece,
didn't cut hers and her small locs are BEAUTIFUL. I saw them
personally at my sister's training and got all up in her head.
(I think some of the permed ends broke off though.) Her picture
is here:
aznet.net/~firyali/Sisterlocks/slocksphotos.html
You know based on your research that it is not the best idea
to lock the permed part because (1) it will cost more to lock
the entire length, and (2) the permed ends will never look the
same as the natural hair -- it matts, crawls, and bunches up.
Eventually, you'll want to cut them off so it is better not to
spend the time and money trying to hang on to them.
A Personal Note: Monica is a very sweet person, just like her
mom (Celeste Geary) and aunt (Joanne Cornwell). It says on the
site that she is a student -- she has her baccalaurate already
and a small child. She has a great sense of humor and took it
well when I teased her about her part on the video tape that was
recorded over 5 years ago. She signed my "That Hair Thing"
book with "Keeping it Long".

Hair Oil Info

moisturized for a minute, but now it's not working anymore.
Ahhhh.. I've used that. Now that I think about it, when
I applied it right after a shower, it didn't last all day.
It is light and felt good though so I used it only after
bathing before bed so that I can apply more in the morning.
I didn't put together that it wasn't very effective until
reading your message.
Here are some things I found. I have no idea which Black Hair
site I got this but I saved it on my computer for reference.
Hope it helps.
1. Oil Recipe
cocoa butter, shea butter, mango butter, 5 drops calendula oil, 5
drops geranium oil, 5 drops rose oil, 1 oz coconut oil, 1 oz olive
oil, 1 oz jojoba oil. I melted the butters and then added the oils
2. Scalp oil for Natural hair
* Rosemary Oil: Stimulates growth, antiseptic, good for dandruff,
excellent shine on dark-colored hair.
* Sage Oil: astringent, stimulates growth, kills bacteria, it is
said
to have the ability to darken graying hair.
* Jojoba: smoothes and conditions curly hair, good for dry scalp.
* Sweet Almond Oil: Contains vitamin E and F, good for itchy scalp,
mild and easily absorbed.
* Avocado Oil: rich in potassium and sulfur, vitamin A, D, and E.
Easily absorbed.
* Evening Primrose Oil: moistures and conditions the hair.
* Birch Oil: Antidandruff effective in treating inflamed scalps.
* Calendula Oil: light astringent. Soothes scalp and eczema problems

Beeswax?

2006-08-08 21:24:09

I've heard a lot of pros and cons about beeswax. After reading this
message from Sigrid, I went to the Carol's Daughter website
(http://www.carolsdaughter.com) to check it out. In their FAQ section, I
found the following:
Quote:
Question: I've been told that beeswax in hair products is bad. Will it
make my hair dull, dry and brittle?
Answer: No. The amount of beeswax we use in our products is not enough to
produce a sticky, "waxy" texture that would leave the hair feeling stiff.
Beeswax is, among other things, an emulsifier. It holds things together.
The idea that beeswax is bad has come from a method of starting locs with
pure beeswax; a method to which most locticians do not ascribe.
End quote
Since I don't know why Sigrid doesn't like the beeswax for her hair, I
don't know if this covers her thoughts on it; but I figured it was good
info to post here.

A Consultation Question

2006-08-08 02:13:14

From reading Joanne's book and talking to people on the internet, I see
that when the hair still has relaxer on it, only the new natural hair is
locked and the permed hair is left free -- to be cut off as the Sisterlocks
mature.
When I went to a consultation a few weeks ago, the consultant put the test
locks in my hair. She locked the entire length of the hair, and didn't
leave the permed hair free. Is this the correct procedure for test locks?
FYI, this is not the consultant that I decided to go with, but I'm just
curious.

Re: Don't Know How

2006-08-05 21:07:16

Hello,
Twisits are fairly simple. They just use a comb to twist the hair
from the root. They resemble cultivated locks, but gel is used to
keep them in place. I've seen a few 'celebrities' such as, Montell
Jordan and Kevon Edmonds wearing them. And if you are a Lauryn Hill
fan she was wearing them a few years ago in her shprt hair stage.
Here in San Diego the price varies depending on where you go. I've
paid everywhere between $25-$65. All the stylists told me that they
would last 3-4 weeks, but the longest I can remember them staying in
is a week. I hope this info helps you out.

Brothalocks?

2006-08-05 20:31:04

Are Brothalocks the same as Sistalocks or aare they the same
technique?

Don't Know How

2006-08-05 06:16:20

Since I decided to go natural a few months ago, I've been wearing my hair
in a bun. I wet it, gel it, brush it back and band it. Then I use combs
on hairpins to ball it up and hold it down. Neat but not very
attractive. I now have about 2 inches of new growth, and even with the gel
it's getting harder and harder to keep it lying flat.
I've been reading various web sites, message boards, and email lists, and
people mention twists as something that works well in the transition
stage. I'm interested in trying this, but I must confess I don't have any
idea what a twist is, what it looks like, how to do it, etc. I'm one of
those people that's been in relaxers since I was 14 years old, and the few
times I went natural I simply wore a TWA. I have no idea how to do any
other natural hair style.
My hair is about 5-1/2 - 6 inches long, with 2 inches of new growth and the
rest is relaxed. Any suggestions, instructions, tips, ideas?

Re: Please help!!!

Hello,
It just so happens that I was experimenting on my neighbors hair and
trying my hand at doing the comb twists last night. I couldn't
believe how easy it was to do compared to what salons charge for
them. Before I had my sisterlocks put in I was wearing comb twists
and paying $55.00 for something that (for me) did not last the
recommended two weeks (lasted one week)because of the excessive
itching. On my neighbors clean, conditioned hair I sprayed water on
the section if it was dry, put a mixture of Natty Lock maintenance
cream with some brand of brown gel on the section and twisted. That
worked pretty good. I will have to check my neighbor out today to
see how the twists look a day later.

Please help!!!

2006-08-04 20:25:17

Hello all,
I am a young brother who has longed for locks for alsot two years. I
started out with simple twists. They didn't work well. When I had a
friend do them after a bout a week they were matted and coming
undone. After that I decided to consult a profressional. Well I went
to the most popular braiding salon here in San Diego and paid what I
think was a lot of money for comb twists. This time they came out
looking better than the first time, but my stylist used so much gel I
thought that I would die from the excessive itching. I tried all
types of remedies and ended up wasting my money. I had to wahs thos
things out. I ended up wearing various cornrowed styles for the next
few months.
At the peak of my frustration I cut all mof my hair off. Now that
I've decided to try it again, but I need some suggestions on how I
can start the locking process. My hair is about 1.5-2ins on the top,
and a little shorter on the sides and in the back. (I grew my hair
out by wearing a tapered fro) If anyone has any suggestions or
comments for me they would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks everyone!!!

First, stop putting ALL THAT STUFF in your hair. Two a little shea butter in
twisting.
Next, when in Los Angeles (|Long Beach) Call a well know shop "Twist n
Shout". BJ. I highly recommend her.

Re: exploring natural hairstyles

Putting them in for yourself is more than gathering some hair
and putting it into a loc using a tool. Besides choosing from
the many locking patterns, there is a special parting pattern
which allows you to part your locs in many styles. For example,
I can part my hair evenly on either side, down the middle, and
other ways because of this parting pattern.
Like Sandy said, you can maintain yourself a few months after
you've got it done if you take the retightening class. It is
best for you to wait a few months (6 or more) for your locs to
settle before going it on your own but, HEY, sometimes you have
no choice and need to get immediate training.
The lady who put in my locs was the ONLY consultant in Colorado
so when she got her Sisterlocks in San Diego, they gave her
the retightening class with advanced techniques so she could
properly maintain them. Also, my sister and I took the
retightening class 2 months after getting them because our
consultant disappeared! My sister and the aforementioned
consultant did a fabulous job maintaining themselves. I do
alright too. (I tightened about 10 locs today -- my hair is
growing like a weed!)
If you live out in an area with LUD (Low Urban Dictate),
you should travel to a Sisterlocks Training Consultant. That
person can put in your locs, teach you retightening, and may
even provide consultant training! When my sister was trained,
one of her classmates was from Spokane or some such
black-forsaken place. She took the class to put them in her
own head but I think she'll get them done by someone else.
After you are trained, folks with highly-textured hair of many
ethnicities in your neck of the woods will beat down your door.

Sisterlocks Homecoming in San Diego

2006-08-03 22:25:10

I've made plans to go and signed up for Package B. Who else is going?

Re: [LockItUp] exploring natural hairstyles

2006-08-03 13:40:37

I seriously doubt it. The consultants go through a specific training
process. There are several locking techniques to Sisterlocks, and they use
the one that will work best for your hair type. Plus, I've watched it
being done, and it's a *very* precise and tedious process.
After you've had the locks in for awhile, you can go to a retightening
class to learn to retighten your own Sisterlocks.
I know what you mean about the braids. I always feel good when I wear
them, but they really can wreak havoc on your hair. I searched for
something natural that I'd really like, and Sisterlocks is the one for me.

exploring natural hairstyles

2006-08-03 09:33:57

I am beginning my exploration into natural hairstyles and have been
greatly assisted by those of you who have gone this way. Currently,
I am wearing individual synthetic braids that I put in myself. In
this particular area of the country, you learn to do a lot of
blackhair things yourself. I must say they look good and I feel so
carefree and grounded. I've been studying the sisterlocks from afar
and am interested in learning more about the technique. Is it
possibe to perform this procedure in one's own head?

Re: Pricing and the black Hair care industry .....

2006-08-03 01:34:28

Detroit is full of Asian beauty supply stores that cater to blacks. I
remember when I was younger there were two black-owned stores in my
neighborhood. Those are the places where we bought all of our hair
care stuff. Now there are the Asian stores that are everywhere.
There must be at least 10 in just my neighborhood alone, making it so
easy because they're always no more than a block or two away.
I never gave this much thought, but if the black-owned stores had
been more prolific in Detroit, I doubt that the Asians would have
been able to take over the market here so easily.
So far they aren't doing hair here yet... they're only selling the
products. It's kind of weird to think of having my hair done by an
Asian, but I had a white hairdresser (at J.C. Penney's salon) for a
couple of years and she did a great job. I guess people can learn
whatever they want or need to learn.
But I do wish our people would take back the control of our hair care
industry. Maybe with this whole movement "back to nature", it'll
give us a leg up in that direction.
I don't know... just thinking out loud. Thanks for the food for
thought, Pat!

Troubles at eGroups

2006-08-02 21:17:53

Just so everyone knows, eGroups has been having a bit of trouble since last
night. Things seem to be getting through now, but some of the messages
that were sent last night or this morning seem to be lost in cyberspace
somewhere.
Sometimes when this happens, we get dumped with all the messages at
once. So if that happens and we end up getting two or three copies of the
same message, don't worry about it -- it's just eGroups trying to heal
itself. :-)

Would you let an Asian do your braids or locs? a very interesting
question...
Read this history lesson and see what is going on if we don't support

Re: Sisterlocks 3-Visit Package

2006-08-02 08:09:31

ladies regarding the comment I made about the price of the
SisterLocks...My loctician is licensed and very professional.<<
~o~o~
I don't doubt it! I only assert that your loctician is not
a Certified Sisterlocks Consultant who gave you Sisterlocks for
$95. Sounds like you are are pleased with your locs and the
price you paid for them. Cool!
~o~o~
time comes in, unless, you are putting in extensions (by the way,
I don't have extensions<<
~o~o~
There are no extensions used with Sisterlocks. The time is not
unlike the time it takes to put in microbraids except for you
are exclusively using your own hair. The technique is designed
to prepare your hair for natural locking in a unique pattern
which is time consuming.
~o~o~
areas and I guess it's not unusual to pay the prices that I have
heard about....<<
~o~o~
Your loctician is qualified to accurately compare locking
techniques and prices of those practicing the methods in which
he/she is trained. However, Sisterlocks is a patented method
that reduces the probablility of coming undone during loc
maturation. There are a many other benefits which I'll let
others describe.
You might want to see IN PERSON someone who has them or is
trained in the Sisterlocks technique rather than relying on
hearsay from those not trained to put in Sisterlocks.
It is like going to a Saturn dealer and asking him/her to tell
you about a Lexus. Saturn makes nice cars, they drive well, and
customers are happy with them. However, a Saturn dealer wants
to sell you a Saturn and will not accurately compare the Saturn
to a Lexus from a cost/benefit perspective.
Please don't get me wrong; your locs are not being called a
Saturn. Personally, I am thrilled to know about one more happy
nappy sister with locs. Who cares how you got them and what
you paid? Celebrate the fact that we all chose to "LockItUp"!
However, if you have questions about a technique and the cost
of it, ask those who KNOW that technique.

questions - Cost of Sisterlocks

The hair appears as tiny braids. You can use curling irons and rollers to
curl the
relaxed ends.

questions - Cost of Sisterlocks

2006-08-01 07:16:10

Mine is maybe an inch longer than yours, with about 2-1/2 inches of new
growth. I think I'll have approx 4 inches by the time I get it done.
How does it look with half locked and have permed. My permed hair is *so*
straight. I'll have to continue with rollers, curling irons, etc. until I
can cut the permed ends off I guess.
